I love when the mountains give you a gift like a surprise cloud clearing. I remember hiking the bondcliffs for the first time. We were totally socked in along the ridge, and then, almost in an instant, the clouds broke and I was seriously brought to tears by the beauty.
I was about 2 hours ahead of you up Ammo (and then did Monroe and Eisenhower down to Crawford) ... and had about 45 mph winds at Lake of the Clouds. Things change fast up there!

Having someone who will put up with you going out and pushing yourself in the wild is priceless. My wife has set some rules since I nearly died in the Ice Gulch, but thankfully the rules are perfectly reasonable. I need to find a like minded buddy for some of the more technical/ risky hikes.
As I am watching you day-hike Mt. Washington in the Winter, I think about all the yahoos who said you'd never finish the AT, SMH. Thank you for bringing us along for this epic adventure.
Awesome hike, beautiful day. I've gone up Mt. Washington 4 times in snow/ice, though generally late March or April, rather than truly winter. There was also a year or two where I went up Monadnock most weekends, often twice, year-round, solo. Maybe 10% of the time late at night. My favorite way to summit Monadnock, is in winter, around midnight on a clear night. It is other-worldly. Glad to see you have that sort of feeling at times on this hike. It doesn't take many great moments like that, to make all the preparation and effort worth it. Memories of that, can provide lifelong motivation to get out in nature. I completely agree with coming down the same path you went up, for the known trail conditions. I do that 100% of the time when conditions or remaining time are the least bit questionable. Except that on Mt Washington, it is not an option for me, because I've always gone up Huntington Ravine on snow and ice (without technical gear) and I would never attempt that descent. I always headed down via Tuckerman's, even when above it was technically closed. You made good decisions. Your family has good reason to trust you, and your judgment. It was a really pleasant surprise to see a video from you at this time. It was amazing for it to be on a mountain and topic I love. I love Katahdin more, and am more familiar with Monadnock, but Mt Washington is also a very special mountain to me, from my adventures and misadventures there. Any mountain can be dangerous and must be respected, but most mountains, even bigger ones I've had bigger problems on, don't always seem ready to bite me hard, they at least sometimes show me mercy. Mt Washington, though, has never shown me much mercy as a hiker, only when I go as a tourist. The times I've really had my way with the mountain, rather than the reverse, it was only because I was on top of my game, not because it went easy on me. I'm 66 and several months ago found the obit of my middle school science teacher in NJ, Joseph Knight, who died a few years ago at a ripe old age. I thought Mr Knight had died decades ago, but it was actually his son of the same name who had died. It turned out that Mr Knight, after retirement and the deaths of his son and wife, spent a lot of time volunteering in the weather observatory on top of Mt Washington! I wish I'd known he was still alive at that time. With social media, you are so lucky that your generation will be able to keep track of people who were important in your life, and get back in touch with them at any time, even in the distant future.
Great video. My wife and I did Mt Washington 23 years ago. Thank you for allowing me to hike it again but through your eyes. Have been following you for a couple years now. And will start my 2024 AT solo in April this time at the age of 67. Times they are a changing. And was glad you got your hikers store up and running

Nice video. That's a whole other world, up there. Our son has climbed Mt. Washington 3 or 4 times in winter - once on a Presidential traverse, a few times via the Huntington Ravine Trail and once on the Tuckerman Ravine/Lion Head Trails. The toughest was the time when the wind chill factor was minus 80° F. He was one of the few who actually made the summit, that day. But, like you, he has the sense and the experience to know when to say 'when,' turn around and leave it for another day. As I've often said to him, "The mountain will be there, even if you're not." Be well, stay safe. 🥾
Impressive, plus your AT thru hikes!! My son and I hiked many Virginia hikes but we hiked Mt.Mitchell, North Carolina! 3500 ft gain over approximately 5.5 miles one way. God bless you!! 🙏
The blue sky was incredible. You are very brave and thanks for the video. I think Dunkin Donuts should pay you for advertising for them. There is a technique for using a ski pole to stop a slide on steep slopes which you probably know already. Keep challenging yourself and stay safe and happy.
That is an amazing hike! I was there in September and took the ammonoosuc trail. Unfortunately it was raining and I got scared I would slide off some part of it. So I turned around. So I guess this Illinois girl is extra amazed with your hike. 🤩
Gear list would be great! I'm reluctant to do anything big in winter because I've never trained with / don't own an ice ax - love to hear your take on them since you went up without one.

“I decided to go on a little solo hike” *hikes the highest peak in NE. Taylor, if you had any interest in learning to use an ice axe. I highly recommend IME in North Conway. I’ve done their mountaineering course and women’s ice climbing. They also host IceFest in NoCo which is a great long weekend of learning winter skills. I don’t have any relation to them, just shouting out local businesses I had a great experience with! Happy Hiking!

I live in Florida but I'm from Mass and planning a trip there and NH in the last 2 weeks in December. I've summited four 14ers in Colorado so I have some experience and trying to decide if Washington is doable solo in winter. Any advice?
How deep would estimate the snow pack was on the trail ? Snowshoes & spikes are foreign to me so I appreciate seeing how they can be used. Great flog. ❤😊
Sad to read all these comments. Two other hikers had to be rescued for a slip on the traverse from Lake of Clouds to the Summit. That is mountaineering boot territory with crampons and an axe to self arrest. This gives others the impression that what you did was adequate or safe. Just because you got lucky on the traverse doesn't mean what you did was all that smart. Please get some training and gear. Others would put their lives on the line to save you if you had a slip.
9:03 god damned trail Zambonis! dont do this, you make the trail very dangerous and slippery for everyone else behind you, especially once it gets cold again at night and your ass slick freezes solid. i see this alot hiking in canada in the winter, and its nearly caused me to break my self upon a tree after slipping and sliding then being forced to sprint down an extremely steep part of the trail because some ass-slider came along, smoothed over all foot holds, and turned the trail into a skating rink. im sure sliding down the trail on your ass is fun for people, but sliding down on my feet or face is not fun for me nor anyone else- and especially not for any elderly on the trail. furthermore, not to be dramatic but, taking a spill over the edge of a cliff face is particularly not fun and is often enough lethal.

I did a buddy hike up Washington and over Monroe, Eisenhower and Pierce yesterday. Conditions were AMAZING. With almost no wind and not a cloud in the sky.

That alpine zone sign was a good depiction of the snow pack! It's usually probably eye level, but now you can see it was almost covered.
