Das Werk Schwimmwagen SG 6 Part 2 Building a Floater what's wrong with the kit

  • This kit held so much promise in my review, and don't get me wrong it builds up into a great plastic model, but getting there can have its pitfalls and is quite frankly downright frustrating. However I have solutions to the problems and do manage, despite frequent cussing, to get this kit built.

    Hi Harry, I think you’re being too self deprecatory about your modeling skills; you build stuff entertainingly and are a true mentor for those of us who are novices or old farts returning to the hobby in retirement.
    Also let’s remember that you’re not merely a modeler; you are a cameraman, video and audio editor and musician (?). Your production skills are constantly improving.
    Whatever you are modeling the “product” is the presentation; and it’s brilliant.

    Hi Harry! Here I was thinking that I was alone in having ‘’old man” fingers and eyesight problems, but it sounds like this kit has exacerbated the problem. However, you are just the man to overcome the frustration. Keep them coming mate, and cheers from south of the border.

    Another interesting project. You seem to have an inexhaustible supply of these to keep us entertained. You have to wonder what thought process (or lack of) made the manufacturers think this level of absurdity was a good idea. A model from a non modelling committee perhaps! Thanks for sticking with it and posting. Best wishes.

    So glad you posted this video. This kit is on my list of ones I wanted to get, and now, I have reservations, for the same reasons you do. Because injection moulding has come on leaps and bounds over the years, kits have become over-engineered. Companies do this just to prove that they can, they like to one up their competition. In some ways it can be a good thing as you can get good kits. In other ways, as you prove in this video, it can complicate things that don't need to be.
    Silly bugger that I am, I decided to get back into modelling with a *cough* Tamiya *cough* kit! I know, you did warn me! It was a Willys Jeep. Needless to say, it began to get on my tits and I relegated it to the other room. Now I'm building Academy Ford Mutts and they are fun kits by comparison. Looking forward to seeing how you get on with the rest of David Schwimmer though.

    Much "fiddlyness"(?) I don't think that's a word, but what the hell! I agree 100% Harry, over-engineered, needless multi-part assemblies when one part can be molded! Thanks for the advice regarding assembly. I am currently building the Border Model 88mm Flak 36, same issues that you are facing along with poor fit on some parts!! Good luck with the rest and I look forward to seeing it! Be seeing you!

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fiddlyness should be a word! Just like Kafarketry. They perfectly describe the situation. Someone call the Oxford Dictionary immediately! Oh, and I want credit.

    I think you've demonstrated perfectly why the philosophy of "oh look at the parts count on this box" does not translate into something being a fantastic kit haha. Usually if the parts count is higher all they did (like on this one) is make the most ridiculous parts separate that could have been more easily molded in, just to boost the number. Coming along nicely though!

      @HarryHoudiniModels I have these deviations too.
      I'm about to embark upon an Airfix Austin lorry (1/35th recent kit) turned into a fish-and-chip van which used to wander around the local villages in Norfolk when I was a wee boy.

    Once again a lot of small parts where a couple would do . Why do they do it ? ls it done intentionally to drive modellers to distraction ,cause stress or make the build an endurance test ? Sad to see another model company going down this road more so when the extra assembly work is hidden on completion as you showed on the wheel assembly .
