What I love about this song is that Ms. Williams' voice rises in pitch and key through the song ending in a crescendo at almost a whistle tone like screaming when you are watching a train wreck...but yet she maintains a truly dulcent tone, even at that register. Both are amazing vocally.
There are several live recordings of this duet over the years, and they are all uniquely beautiful.
Mathis and William's each posess such strong seemingly effortless, vocal technique and use it to brilliantly make the listener feel the beauty of what they once had together and of the children they created, while still mourning the loss of that beautiful family and the couple's intimate relationship. A deceptively bittersweet song and an absolute tour de force for both performers!

The great Johnny Mathis, the original "little boy lost", is still alive and kicking at the ripe young age of 85. Try a very young and innocent Johnny doing "It's Not For Me To Say" in an old, live performance. The equally great Denise Williams has had a long career. Listen to her doing the incredible "Silly", and her other great hits such as "{Black Butterfly", "Free", "It's Gonna Take A Miracle" and her big hit, "Let's Hear It For The Boy".

Johnny Mathis was a HUGE pop singer starting in the mid 1950s through the 1970s; He had a handful of Top 10 pop hits, yet his albums sold in the many tens of millions (His GREATEST HITS album was literally on the Billboard Top 100 Albums chart for about 11 years ongoing ~!!!) TAKE CARE and I'm ENJOYING your channel ~*

This is a great song that went to #1 on the pop charts in 1978. The combination of Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams singing together is fantastic. From the 1950s-early 1960s., Johnny Mathis was The King Of The Romantic Ballads with classic songs like "Chances Are", "The Twelve Of Never", "Misty", and "Wonderful Wonderful". Deniece Williams was a great R&B singer with songs such as "It's Going To Take A Miracle" and her #1 hit from the 1984 movie Footloose, "Let's Hear It For The Boy."

    My Sweet Darling K.S.O.,
This was Johnny's last #1 U.S. hit and it is wonderful. Yes, the song is about the end of a marriage after the children have moved out. I come from a broken home. My parents divorced when I was 11/12 years old. My divorce happened when our daughter was six. I have already talked about it on your channel. The divorce was amicable and we are on speaking terms still. We understand each other. The song is definitely in my playlist.
    God Bless

The musical word for the ‘quiver’ you mentioned, is called vibrato. Yes they both have it very noticeable, & Neicey’s is a little quicker, along with her amazing range. Very sweet person, she’s also Christian & has released work on Christian market as well. Johnny Mathis is actually really an iconic figure in music. He’s 15 years older than Deneice & he’s always looked amazing. She is now 70 & Johnny is 85. They also did the theme song for a sitcom that started like a year before the Cosby show called, Family Ties, that starred Michael J. Fox. Johnny is know for some classics: Chances Are, & Christmas songs like, Most Wonderful Time of the Year & Sleigh Ride. If you haven’t done already, more Deneice: Free; Silly; Black Butterfly; Let’s Hear it For the Boy.

Great insight into this sad ending of a song. At least it sounds as if it will be an amicable parting. Intelligent, adult, without animus and anger, no backstabbing, no “I’ll show her/him” in regards to whom gets what. As someone who had to go through one of those types of divorces, I wish mine had been this agreeable. Sadly it wasn’t.

Ah recorded for top of the pops , back in 70's artist could use original music but had to do a fresh vocal for the show...now these two could damn well sing and i think this vocal was better than original studio version and that's just how close it was.

I can still remember when our wormy Priminister John Major was put out of power as care taker P,M and Sky news played this to a montage of his weak failers, it fitted like a hand in a glove, still VERY funny, they also played the great SORRY by Phil Collins, equally as funny.
But I'm going to put my head in the Lion's mouth, & say, the song deserved a different singing duet say...Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye.

I enjoy your reactions a great deal. Can I suggest that you try 5 classics (two of them standards)? - Nat King Cole - "Stardust"; Vic Damone - anything, but try "Perfidia"; The Fortunes - "You Got Your Troubles"; Randy Edelman - "Uptown, Uptempo Woman" and The Walker Brothers - either (or both) "Love Her" or "Make it Easy on Yourself". As you enjoy watching great dancing, please try Marge and Gower Champion dancing to "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" - I feel sure that you will love them all.

I have to disagree with staying together in a marriage for the sake of the kids. As a child of divorced parents, hearing your parents argue (often times late at night when parents think you’re asleep), is quite devastating.. People are not stagnant, and change occurs constantly. Sometimes that change for people is in opposite directions. So when your parents are unhappy, the whole household is unhappy. I have to say our house was much happier after the divorce. Kids know much more than you think, when it comes to an unhappy household.
Maybe it’s because of my own experiences, but when I heard this song, back in the day, I never thought of it as a sad song. But a song of two people, who split amicably and are moving on to enjoy the rest of their lives.
