While the oil is draining, I let the engine cool down before I change the oil filter. I fill the new oil filter to the brim a few times, letting the oil soak into the media. If the oil filter is on an angle, I pour some of the oil back into the oil jug to be added to the oil fill hole later. This oil in the filter prevents or at least, minimizes a dry start after changing the oil. This is an important and easy step which will make your engine last longer.
Adding an oil coating to the new gasket will prevent distorting the gasket and also make it easier to remove.
When I was younger and had strong hands, I just hand tightened the new oil filter. Now, I tighten it by hand as much as possible (which isn't much) and then turn a total of 1/2 turn with a wrench. There is no need to over-tighten it. ALSO, be sure to check the old filter to make sure the gasket came off with it. If not, you will have two gaskets on the filter and they will leak.
I always tighten the oil drain bolt with a torque wrench so that I don't strip the threads. I did that once when I was a kid and created a huge problem for myself. Lesson learned the hard way.

I always use an oil filter wrench on my Wrangler, just don't overtighten. I was not impressed when I took the wife's Liberty for an oil change(I didn't have time to do it myself). They didn't use a wrench so the filter got loose and leaked oil. When I checked the level a week later the oil was so low and I can turn the filter very easily with one hand.
