My Grammy had these all around her home and they were huge bushes that wrapped her whole house and I lost my gram and i find these triggering to happy memories these beautiful flowers are such a big sentimental reminder of my grandmother She could grow anything and did grow everything! I just recently purchased seeds bc none of the nurseries around here have any plants. So I’m nervous about starting seeds, not sure if I’ve got my grams green thumb!
Thats Gardening for you, so many plants that are just beautiful, some easy some hard to grow. In India you would need to be very far north, and up in the hills. We can only dream....
Difficult in your climate, HOWEVER, morning sun afternoon shade, good air flow, try to keep cool in summer. Maybe grow in pots so you can shift them around for best conditions. Let us know how you go with them.
Great video,I have mine growing outside and they are about two and a half feet tall and they stopped flowering, Should I trim them back to promote more flowering? I already give them lots of fertilizer. I'm not sure what to do...
If I plant this in my garden outside, with regular all-purpose soil as a base and top soil as dressing, will it still live and thrive? Does it need all of these specific mixtures/quantities of soils in order for it to live?
Does anyone know if the roots of these are a strong pain killer? I heard the dicentra formosa was, someone made a tincture and said it was strong like morphine but non addicting
So its died back for summer? You can either plant it out and keep it slightly moist, or keep it in a container. Either way do not let it dry out. BUT not wet and soggy.
Will my Bleeding Heart still grow even though it was taken out of the ground a couple days ago and has dried out. It was given to me by my Aunt. Thank you
This is one of our favourite plants. Hard to know how dry it actually is, but certainly worth a try, SO get it back into the ground and water well with a liquid seaweed fertiliser. OR maybe a container, good potting mix and part shade. Good luck with it, Stay Safe and Happy Gardening
We prefer early spring, just when they are about to start growing. This way they are ready to send out new roots and growth . Dig the clump, use a sharp knife divide the clumps and replant immediately. If you must, you can divide them in late fall, although with a cold wet winter coming, the root disturbance at this time can set them back.
But if Bleeding Heart seeds are bought from somewhere, then do they have to be stored in the freezer for a while before planting, or can they be planted right away?
Best repotted in spring before it starts to shoot. If you really have to repot it when in full growth you must keep the whole root ball in tact if you want it to survive and flower, this can be tricky....
@@johnnyAGardening I just received it so i didnt get a chance to do it before hand. It came in a small planter. I will be very very careful to keep the roots in tact. Thank you so much!
I just planted the seeds in a pot and put them in the freezer to germinate. Is it too late? I read it needs to be in there for 6 weeks and then be out at a cold temperature of 65 degrees for 2 months.
I received a dry root months ago. I planted and watered it inside. It still has not sprouted. I pulled the roots from the pot and planted in a good spot. What are the odds that the plant is dead? Do they go dormant when divided? Thanks.
Not sure which climate zone you are in SO When you removed the plant from the pot did the tuber/rhizome seem fleshy or dry and shrivelled ? If the plant (rhizome /tuber) was dry when you received the plant then thats not a good sign. If it seemed OK, Bleeding Heart Plants are dormant from mid summer to late winter/spring, depends a little on the climate. If its spring in your area then it should be sending up shoots soon. Hope this helps.
Indeed! Touching them causes skin irritation, and eating them can cause vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulty, convulsions, seizures, liver damage, and even death if ingested in large quantities.

Isn't nature amazing and her gifts of plants are amazing. Beautiful plant 💚💚👍👍
By Grandmother had these, roses, salvia and cosmos among her favorite plants in her Brooklyn NY garden during the mid 1920s-mid-1960s
Must have been a lovely garden...thanks for watching
@@johnnyAGardening thanks! I remember it fondly
Nice video, very helpful. Well done, thank you.😊
I like the wite variety.
They are beautiful flowers. Seen them when i visited Vancouver. Wish I could grow them in India!

You can grow. Where do you live Bhavita exactly in India? What’s the weather there and u need to find a place with maximum shade.. but in open
I have a couple of those Bleeding heart plants .
Can I scatter the seeds in the fall, or do I have to keep them cold for a length of time??
Blooming heart 💖
Thank you ! Pl give tips for planting in the Caribbean islands

They usually do not repeat flower, so we just leave them, let the foliage die back and then clean up the dead foliage.
What are the proportions of the soil mix you used please?

It should live and flower, however the extra fertiliser will help growth.
Does anyone know if the roots of these are a strong pain killer? I heard the dicentra formosa was, someone made a tincture and said it was strong like morphine but non addicting
I saw on internet which said all parts of the plant are toxic.
It's summer now..can I still plant a bulb and get it started?
And if I can't, should I keep it in bulb form until next spring?

Are there nanos in the plants
I am trying to find out how big/how to prune the bush, and when to prune it. Any shape I should make it?😆
Generally we do not prune Bleeding Heart plants at all. They die back over winter so no real need to prune for us.
I have a huge one (may be several plants, I have never split it.) I want to put it into pots. Can I do this late in the fall? I live in zone 5a.

But if I wanted to plant the seeds now that it's cold, could I plant them directly or should I still keep them in the fridge for six weeks first?
You could winter as a cold stratification, although I would keep them in the fridge and plant late winter.
Hi! What is the ratio for the potting mix?
YES, i could NOT find the ratio either - as promised in video
At 1:42 they have potting mix ratios!
But if Bleeding Heart seeds are bought from somewhere, then do they have to be stored in the freezer for a while before planting, or can they be planted right away?
Yes, 6 weeks cold stratification isn recommended.
hey Johnny! where can i get the bleeding heart here in Au? thanks
Best purchased in autumn. Tonkins Bulbs have all three colours used in the video.
If you’re looking for seeds. I just bought mine on eBay
@@drd6893 thank you! have you planted them yet?

Hi, I've planted my bleeding heart with the top of the plant more exposed. Must it be covered in soil like this? It could be why it's not growing.
Yes, top of the tuber should be just covered.

isn’t it poisonous tho
Yes, they can cause skin irritation and if eaten, they can cause other problems....

How long does it usually take bleeding heart seeds to germinate?
Give them a cold stratification for 6 weeks. Then around 4 - 6 weeks to germinate.
