  • In 1674 Gaspar Sanz wrote his now famous Instrucción de Música sobre la Guitarra Española, published in Saragossa and dedicated to Don Juan. Pavana is one of his most popular works, and has been recorded by many guitarists. The original tablature consists of three sections. Almost all recordings omit the third section. It is here included, and is a beautiful, almost romantic, coda-like extension of the first two sections. It makes use of the Campanella effect. Campanella means "little bell" and is characterized by sustaining a note on one string, while another note of an adjacent string is played. This gives a beautiful over-ringing effect, and Sanz often used it in his music.

Tutorial is here, don't pay attention to the MIDI speed, use the same tempo as played here by Jeffrey.
