This issue specifically has been causing me angst with a project. I just woohoo-ed around my house like my team won a championship when it worked. THANK YOU!!
Glad I could help, I love this software and plan to make many more videos like this throughout my life here on earth! Drop a sub for future video's! or if you ever have questions, I can help personally. :)
Needed to know how to do a complex clipping mask that didn't go blank when you think it should work...... and BAM! there was your video telling me exactly what i need to do. Nice one mate, thanks
Now is it possible once you have a compound path to then move those shapes without releasing the clipping mask? Trying to setup a complex design in illustrator using one compound path then needing to move the shapes to setup a nested print file. have issues creating the mask for each shape without the program moving sooooo slow being it duplicates the mask for each shape and makes a massive file to work with. I am working with a design and and image, I know you can typically create a crop around the mask but in this case it does not work with the image just the vector work. Any help? Hopefully that makes sense.
hy sir what if try it on text then the Compand Path Option is disable for text i have been very struggling with this isuue kindly sir make a vedio on text clipping mask issues.
no need for a video, although I could make a video lol, but you have to expand the text first under object>expand, then the text will become outline and shapes. A video on expanding would be a good idea. You can only clip to shapes, not text. It does not work like photoshop in that regard. Text is always text unless expanded into a shape.
Hey Mark, I’m currently working on some Box designs… and need help with these darn clipping masks… I’d really appreciate your help. I really need to pick your brain on this!
Thank you! Is there a way to separate the images once you've clipped them? When I use this trick it works, but then I have to keep them all in a group and can't separate the individual shapes....?
you would have to copy and paste the image, and make that shape separate from the main image, as the shapes are merely a hole to see the image through, if that makes sense. I bet what you want to do is easier in photoshop because it will be less intense on your PC.
@@zovi3363 expand font, expand and group texture, must be grouped, you can also make it a compound path too if the group gives you trouble. You should be able to clipping mask the text no problem with texture. Make sure the text is brought to front, texture sent to back
Hi Mark, Nice video. Basically I need to do the opposite of what you demonstrate here and it is not working. I need to take a complex compound path and clip it into a shape. For instance I have a noisy pattern that I want to clip into another shape but even though it is a compound path it disappears instead of being clipped to the shape above in the layers. Hopefully you or someone will see this and can advise.
so the pattern is grouped? and make sure you tell the program it is a compound path. After that, you should be able to put your shape on top and ctrl+7 (make clipping mask). You can send a video however you want to my @markd_arts instagram if you need more help. Id be happy to respond, and a visual can help
It also works with complex vector over complex vector. You need to compound the mask. If the vector inside is complex, do not compound them, just group up them
this may apply only if the two compound path is made with path or line as well. But if one of them is image and the other is path or line, it will not work.
@@MarkDiMattei Maybe my mistake, I mean in clipping mask. there is a certain moment that the image couldn't t make a "Clipping mask.", AI i think only allows clipping mask if you made it via path or outline.
Select the area you want to put the mask with a rectangle tool let it cover with a fill then select the entire art work, right click then select the clipping mask. This should work
first one to say that, you really have to make sure the group is layered properly and everything is organized for it to work, if layers are messy, or things aren't properly brought to the front, it wont work
Not sure why, really focus on the order you group, what’s on top, and what’s on bottom, what’s grouped, what’s masked, etc, it really has to be perfect set up
OMG! Thank you so much for this!!! I have been struggling to figure out why my clipping mask wasn't working. Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!!!

yes you can and I probably should make a video about that because it is a lot to explain, it requires the group direct selection tool

just expand the font, object>expand

Every time I hit make compound path the whole thing disappears...
dont select the image when making a path out of your shapes, and make sure your knockout shapes are on top, and/or already knocked out
