I was wrong about the crew limits for each ship, I'll pop them below! Also, storing money in the bank costs you money, it's an annual fee at the interest rate! Fluyt - 100 Merchant - 200 East Indiaman - 250 Corvette - 100 Frigate - 200 Fourth Rate - 300 You need to level up with the guild of merchants via gaining the 4 reputations to gain access to the better ships. I played it some more last night and it's not difficult to make quite a lot of money, but gaining the 3 reputations not linked to trading is quite a grind!
I played the crap out of it way back. I liked the ship to ship combat a lot. Since the game lacked any sort of crosshair I recall cutting out a tiny triangle-shaped piece out of a glue-covered corner of post-it note and sticking it to my monitor in a spot where the guns would hit the enemy. Depending on the direction of travel, distance and speed I would lead my shots in reference to that piece of paper with pretty much 100% accuracy. The piece was small enough that it didn't really obstruct anything either during game or other uses of the computer and I kept it there for a very, very, long time. Even my father, who would use the computer occasionally, quickly stopped noticing and complaining about it. That was on the big ol' CRT monitor. I don't think I would dare trying this on modern LCD. They seem too fragile.
If you have any suggestions for DOS or Amiga games I can cover, let me know! I add them to a list to cover one day. Playing this has got me in the mood to play some Daggerfall! Not sure it would fit the channel, can't really do a nice concise LP with that game, nor do I think I can make a one off video that has much to add, it's already been extensively covered!
Stumbling on your channel was an instant subscription. Especially since i remember some of these games when i was a kid. Like Transarctica/Snowpiercer, now High Seas and other similar games. I only played the 3d version of Defender of the Crown, didnt actually know it had predecessors. Good times.
Since I was doing a lot of ship to ship combat in this game, I quickly discovered the best method of taking down even bigger opponents. Basically, I would use the anti-sail shot (whatever its called) first to immobilize the ship and then have leisurely picking at it with anti-personnel ammunition until I had dwindled them enough to have numerical advantage during boarding. In later game I would totally forgo regular trading in favour of piracy. It was very lucrative.

Watch out. The interest rate in banks is the money the bank TAKES AWAY FROM YOU, not a real interest rate they pay out.
@@guderheinz I was surprised by that! But I suppose making money in the game is already quite easy

Oh, that's a fun game, although it does get repetitive after a few hours. I still managed to beat it about a year ago.

High Seas Trader? Don't drink and sail!

That's a good idea! I struggle to land many hits with the cannons.
