People are so short sighted when it comes to huge companies like Amazon. It’s like how people act like Jeff Bezos is making all the decisions for the company. There are a lot of people involved in these decisions. Diversity in delivery vehicles is not only smart, it has to happen in case there are major problems with one of the brands.
So awesome to see this video from my favorite channel after driving the Rivian for work today. The only thing I have to say is, unless the larger manufacturers do more than just electrify their existing models, I hope that Amazon prioritizes Rivian going forward. These vans are built precisely for what we do and it is miles beyond the standard vans in every way, especially when it comes to ergonomics. No aches after a couple long shifts is new to me!
So obviously you have not driven a step van, the Rivians are just 1970's step vans, which ARE great compared to the totally inappropriate use of plumbers van for doing delivery.
As a fleet mechanic that services some of the delivery vans for an Amazon facility, I'm really excited to see the electric versions come out. It's also just going to give the drivers another thing to complain about, and those guys really already don't get paid enough. (Remember guys, be kind to your delivery drivers. They're third party so amazon doesn't take care of them as well as they should.)

As someone who delivers packages for Amazon and has driven the prime Ram vans and ford transits, the ford transits win hands down. Much higher quality all around and you can tell whoever designed it thought a lot about the people who were going to be using it
@@Squab27 ram/chrysler quality is down the shitter. While the GM does have a touchscreen the actual quality of the screen is garbage. Compare that to the Ford which has a much higher quality nicer looking display. This means that the rearview camera on the Ford is much clearer and better looking. The rearview camera by contrast is garbage on the Ram compared to the ford. The ford also has more conveniently located cupholders, A much nicer stereo, and a higher quality interior. Both interiors are made of plastic but the Ford does a better job at making it feel less cheap and more durable. The Ford engine is also really good I actually like the way the Ram shifts at lower speeds but the actual quality and durability of a Ram is trash. The Ford will last a lot longer. the display on the speedometer on the ford also looks really nice and is easy and intuitive to use. I drove one of our prime Ram vans yesterday and it he buttons missing from the center console (hazard light buttons and more!), and the rear latch to open up the left door on the back was gone so I couldn’t open up the left side door. The side door on the ram also takes and obscene amount of force to slam it shut. It’s just a pain in the ass.
The transit seats don’t even adjust up and down. The metal is thinner on the body, which is going to rust through quicker than all other vans. (I build camper vans in all platforms and cut holes in them constantly. I know this for a fact) The handling is atrocious, and the body roll in 20 mph wind feels like you’re going around a racetrack. The field of view is terrible over the front end. The dash is too tall, and since you can’t raise the seat, if you’re anywhere near 6’0 or over you’re going to have your knees hovering all day. If you’re in the market for a van go drive all of them. Don’t take anyone’s advice. It’s plain and simple going to fall down to your budget in the first place and what you deem worth your money but, at least do yourself a favor and drive all of them.
the turnover on those gas vans is pretty quick, there's a reason people generally don't buy them used. They're completely wrecked after like 3-5 years, constant top-start is really hard on the drivetrains. That being said, used EV delivery vans in 5-10 years could be a really good option because they don't suffer the same way from start-stop driving
@@joyfuflower Too bad in 5 to 10 years time they will be due for battery replacement which will seriously hinder any resale value. Batteries do not seem to depreciate which is another reason why gas vans will be around longer

The stock market is rigged against retail traders anyway. Everyone should read up on recent scandals. Don't trust hedge fund owned media outlets. DYOR and hedge accordingly.
Most companies have a whole bunch of venture capitalists who've invested since day one, long before the IPO. Once the shares hit the market and everyone is buying, the price skyrockets. Once the price skyrockets people start feeling fear of missing out, so they throw aside all of their research and buy overvalue because their shares aren't filling at market price. Once it gets crazy high the venture capitalists unload their shares and make an insane profit. With the price dump off many retail traders get scared that they overpaid and end up selling theirs too out of fear, further driving down the price. Then the VCs turn around and invest in 10 more pre-IPO companies with their profits and repeat the process again.
I'm currently in my Amazon work van and just saying, we already have all the cameras and sensors for the traffic lights, speed limits, distance between cars, eye tracking, and even face tracking (we cant look down)and even seeing if we have a phone in our hand or if we're looking at our phones too. All of this is constantly on and if we do something wrong and it picks it up it then affects our scores.
This all reminds me so much about how my initial CDL training and beginning trucking company Prime and Success Leasing operates. I think Rivian may end up being the Kenworth and Peterbilt of the van makers. A premium option that is desired by drivers. But could be more expensive to lease/purchase.

Doesn't sound as bad on paper but as you said the problem is that the high frequency automated trading spends zero computing cycles factoring the negative economic impact it might cause companies and other investors. it only cares that its turning a profit in the short term. In the netherlands whenever i order something off *Amazon* , i usually see Nissan EV minivans at my door. Theyre always clean, brand new, and ecofriendly. *PostNL* uses Length3height3 diesel Merc or VW vans, but sometimes surprises me with some hippie on a threewheel bicycle 🤗 Whenever *DHL* comes its usually some rando in civillian clothes driving a stained white lenght3height3 (standart size terms for van dimensions) with as many dents in it as cubic inches in the engine. And a ratlling diesel powerhouse that renders anything behind it ashy vulcanic grey color.

Can't wait till these used vans hit the market. Even if they arent for sale, spare parts will be all the cheaper and more plentiful on these platforms and their base vehicles/ engines.
Not to mention the number of engines used in the vans over the years. I've noticed when comparing the offerings people say the Peugeot/Citroen variant to be better than the Fiat/Ram version, as it is cheaper and much faster than other new vans on the market.

As someone who has worked in the Normal rivian plant for a little over the year, not only can I say the vans and r1's have come a long way, but I can also day I hope the company continues to grow not only bc I wanna keep my job but bc I'd like the potential of getting my own r1t (or whatever future model is available)
Fleet maintained can mean well documented regular maintenance which is good. But just remember the stop and go/ idling of deliveries causes Much more wear and tear than highway miles.
I fell in love (or at least hard lust) with the Rivian while watching Ewan McGregor’s “Long Way Up.” I was praying at the time that Rivian would eventually deliver an SUV or wagon, as the only cargo I haul around are Irish Wolfhounds. I’ve ordered a R1S and am very excited for delivery.
I'm from Bloomington/Normal. I remember when Rivian bought the old Mitsubishi plant. Other than a "What the heck is a Rivian?" statement, I literally paid no mind to it until I saw Long Way Up. I was blown away with those Rivian prototypes. Seriously. And now, I'm an employee of Rivian.

I would call Vivian's stock price slide more of a market correction than anything else. EV automakers like Tesla and rivian are insanely overvalued compared to their more traditional peers, and sometimes it takes a jolt like Amazon partnering with Stellantis to make delivery vans, for people to wake up.

I drive for Amazon and the Prime Rams and Sprinters are awful to drive. Also doesn't help that the GPS provided for delivering makes me want to put the van into a telephone pole.

I live in a town 30 mins from Normal IL where Rivian's main plant is and we actually had two of our workers leave us and go to Rivian. They both claim everything is rolling strong there and production is ramping more each day it seems. Seems like an astounding place to work from the cleanliness of the plant to the complimentary mouthwash they leave in the bathrooms. Rivian is the real deal for sure.

I wouldn't touch "the dip" on any stocks that have IPO'd during the pandemic. Rivian won't be anywhere near profitable for years, and we're about to experience a mild recession as the FED raises rates and people realize we vastly over anticipated inflation in both the housing and new/used vehicle market. When people have to start treating money like money again instead of blowing a ton of it, and then getting more for free from the government, like they have been for the past 22 months, we're going to see an overabundance of supply and little to no demand at anywhere near these prices - and that goes for stocks too. We've barely seen a dip yet compared to what's coming.

I've never seen any company that needs a large fleet of vehicles buy only one brand. They usually have a mixture of a bunch of different brands in there.

7:55 I miss having knobs to turn for climate control, not because I'm a 56-year-old man (only 48 thank you very much), but because they are tactile and I can find and operate them without taking my eyes off the road. This is why when I purchased my latest vehicle, a Hyundai Santa Cruz, I chose the SEL Premium trim level instead of the Limited.
Yeah some things on these EV's are needlessly over engineered. No knobs is one. Another are the handles that pop out. What do I do when my truck freezes over? Am I locked out of my truck because the motors can't push through the ice?
200mi isn't going to cut it for commercial use. Especially in the midwest where ev's get half the range during the winter. Amazon trucks will be stuck sitting on the side of the road more than actually out delivering packages

Electric vehicles still mined and produced with good ole gas and oil. Never giving up on my fuel injected. I like being able to go 500+ miles in a day. In a fast moving world sometimes you just gotta get it and get there not plan to plug in half way there for the night.
Yeah, everything does. It’s a bit naïve however for you to think we won’t have 500 to 1000 mile electric cars in the future. ICE cars will still be around for the people that enjoy them. Not a requirement for the people that just want to get to work. Jay Leno in my opinion has the best take on electric cars. He equates it to when horses were replace and industries flourished for the enthusiastic recreation as it became a pleasure not a requirement.
Donut made a video explaining that EV's are still using less CO2 than gas powered cars, with the Produktion CO2 Footprint of both included. And the lucid air can drive 600 miles or something like that, so EV's will soon overtake the range of gas powered cars.

I'm looking forward to some good deals on fleet vans. As far as the EV market goes, I'm in no hurry to run out and purchase new tech. I'm a huge supporter of EV tech. I'm also a realist who lives in the middle of nowhere in the midwest U.S. I have a few reasons why I'm not currently interested in EV: 1. Cost 2. Availability of parts 3. Ease of maintenance 4. No proven track record 5. Infrastructure In a few years when EV tech is far more established, I may consider an EV option. As it stands, I'm sticking to the tried-and-true combustion engines.
None of the reasons you listed actually apply: 1. Lower cost per mile 2. No parts required as they are exceptionally reliable 3. Schedule maintenance mostly eliminated and a fraction of combustion van maintenance 4. Already a proven track record for EV's which have over a decade of use already. 5. What infrastructure would you need? For delivery or company vans, charge them at the company or at home. No brainer.
Replacing delivery cars (Amazon, USPS…) is pretty much overdue at this point. It just hurts to see how they start the engine, drive 100 feet, stop the engine, and do it again. Huge stress on ICE engines, very inefficient, and the most polluting way to drive a car. EV is just better for this purpose in every way.
@@bennynagon9322 it fluctuates, but yes, unless you own a flex fuel vehicle and a wood lot or equivalent so you can make your own fuel (and pay road tax on it separately) it won’t get much cheaper to use an Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle.
I look at van prices every month. Prices are close to when I got mine last October, which was still overpriced but not like insane early 2022 pricing. Only problem is now the interest rates on loans are 3% higher. Commercial loans always have higher rates too. I bet it's 8% right now.
I would be surprised if Amazon didn't buy a larger stake in Rivian now that the price is down and make another 50 billion once the stock rebounds after high consumer satisfaction and increased demand.

Those Stellantis Promasters look like a huge improvement over the regular Dodge ones we are currently using. At least at the DSP I work for they are super basic, back up camera and that's about it. We do have a bunch of Ford Transit vans that are much better but I can't wait to have whatever EVs we get eventually.
I still haven't heard a solution to what they are going to do with all the "Non-recyclable" parts on those lithium batteries at end of life. There will be the next environmental problem and it will be huge. I guess they will just bury them and stay quiet.
Have any of you done the back of the napkin calculations as to how much electricity would be required to switch over every vehicle currently on the road? Would also be fun to figure out how many wind turbines and or solar panels would be required and how much land mass they would cover.
Right now, there are enough solar cells in the world, that once no longer viable, will dwarf the insoluble plastic waste that was around five years ago. Do you really want a mountain of those higher than your plastic trash on the outskirts of town? They don't recycle them.

The math on this is relatively simple. We know that refining oil into gasoline per gallon (petrol) requires around 6kWh. That is enough energy to drive an electric car around 25 miles (40Km). So, a lot of the energy required for EV's is already being spent (wasted) on fossil fuel production. Also, talking about how much "land mass" wind turbines would cover would be minimal as offshore turbines are where the biggest growth is and where the largest turbines are being installed. The same applies to solar. When you put solar on a rooftop, no land mass is lost, the roof is already there. There are millions of square miles of rooftop space around the worlds that are basically wasted today, which could hold a solar array with zero additional space needed. Just take a look at the airport terminals and parking garages at a decent sized airport and the massive amount of rooftop space which could power the entire airport and send the surplus to the neighboring towns and cities.
i also prefer knobs and switches instead of a touchscreen. its just so much more intuitive and haptic. that also makes it safer and more easy to use. never change a running system. (i am 35 😂 )

So awesome to see this video from my favorite channel after driving the Rivian for work today. The only thing I have to say is, unless the larger manufacturers do more than just electrify their existing models, I hope that Amazon prioritizes Rivian going forward. These vans are built precisely for what we do and it is miles beyond the standard vans in every way, especially when it comes to ergonomics. No aches after a couple long shifts is new to me!
So obviously you have not driven a step van, the Rivians are just 1970's step vans, which ARE great compared to the totally inappropriate use of plumbers van for doing delivery.
As a fleet mechanic that services some of the delivery vans for an Amazon facility, I'm really excited to see the electric versions come out. It's also just going to give the drivers another thing to complain about, and those guys really already don't get paid enough. (Remember guys, be kind to your delivery drivers. They're third party so amazon doesn't take care of them as well as they should.)

As someone who delivers packages for Amazon and has driven the prime Ram vans and ford transits, the ford transits win hands down. Much higher quality all around and you can tell whoever designed it thought a lot about the people who were going to be using it

@@Squab27 ram/chrysler quality is down the shitter. While the GM does have a touchscreen the actual quality of the screen is garbage. Compare that to the Ford which has a much higher quality nicer looking display. This means that the rearview camera on the Ford is much clearer and better looking. The rearview camera by contrast is garbage on the Ram compared to the ford.
The ford also has more conveniently located cupholders, A much nicer stereo, and a higher quality interior. Both interiors are made of plastic but the Ford does a better job at making it feel less cheap and more durable.
The Ford engine is also really good I actually like the way the Ram shifts at lower speeds but the actual quality and durability of a Ram is trash. The Ford will last a lot longer. the display on the speedometer on the ford also looks really nice and is easy and intuitive to use.
I drove one of our prime Ram vans yesterday and it he buttons missing from the center console (hazard light buttons and more!), and the rear latch to open up the left door on the back was gone so I couldn’t open up the left side door. The side door on the ram also takes and obscene amount of force to slam it shut. It’s just a pain in the ass.
The transit seats don’t even adjust up and down. The metal is thinner on the body, which is going to rust through quicker than all other vans. (I build camper vans in all platforms and cut holes in them constantly. I know this for a fact) The handling is atrocious, and the body roll in 20 mph wind feels like you’re going around a racetrack. The field of view is terrible over the front end. The dash is too tall, and since you can’t raise the seat, if you’re anywhere near 6’0 or over you’re going to have your knees hovering all day.
If you’re in the market for a van go drive all of them. Don’t take anyone’s advice. It’s plain and simple going to fall down to your budget in the first place and what you deem worth your money but, at least do yourself a favor and drive all of them.

the turnover on those gas vans is pretty quick, there's a reason people generally don't buy them used. They're completely wrecked after like 3-5 years, constant top-start is really hard on the drivetrains. That being said, used EV delivery vans in 5-10 years could be a really good option because they don't suffer the same way from start-stop driving

The stock market is rigged against retail traders anyway. Everyone should read up on recent scandals. Don't trust hedge fund owned media outlets. DYOR and hedge accordingly.
Most companies have a whole bunch of venture capitalists who've invested since day one, long before the IPO. Once the shares hit the market and everyone is buying, the price skyrockets. Once the price skyrockets people start feeling fear of missing out, so they throw aside all of their research and buy overvalue because their shares aren't filling at market price. Once it gets crazy high the venture capitalists unload their shares and make an insane profit. With the price dump off many retail traders get scared that they overpaid and end up selling theirs too out of fear, further driving down the price. Then the VCs turn around and invest in 10 more pre-IPO companies with their profits and repeat the process again.

I'm currently in my Amazon work van and just saying, we already have all the cameras and sensors for the traffic lights, speed limits, distance between cars, eye tracking, and even face tracking (we cant look down)and even seeing if we have a phone in our hand or if we're looking at our phones too. All of this is constantly on and if we do something wrong and it picks it up it then affects our scores.

Doesn't sound as bad on paper but as you said the problem is that the high frequency automated trading spends zero computing cycles factoring the negative economic impact it might cause companies and other investors. it only cares that its turning a profit in the short term. Its how the stock market does its harm it syphons wealth while not really helping companies achieve any sort of long term stability plus it creates a marked conflict of interest where companies are more interested in pleasing faceless investors than serving its original customers.
It seems that stock speculators have a large amount more influence than true investors.

Not to mention the number of engines used in the vans over the years. I've noticed when comparing the offerings people say the Peugeot/Citroen variant to be better than the Fiat/Ram version, as it is cheaper and much faster than other new vans on the market.

Fleet maintained can mean well documented regular maintenance which is good. But just remember the stop and go/ idling of deliveries causes Much more wear and tear than highway miles.
I work at a shop that services all the Amazon vehicles in my area. All they do is change the oil and drive them until they blow up. Wouldn't recommend
I fell in love (or at least hard lust) with the Rivian while watching Ewan McGregor’s “Long Way Up.” I was praying at the time that Rivian would eventually deliver an SUV or wagon, as the only cargo I haul around are Irish Wolfhounds. I’ve ordered a R1S and am very excited for delivery.
I'm from Bloomington/Normal. I remember when Rivian bought the old Mitsubishi plant. Other than a "What the heck is a Rivian?" statement, I literally paid no mind to it until I saw Long Way Up. I was blown away with those Rivian prototypes. Seriously. And now, I'm an employee of Rivian.

that wasn't the only reason why the stock took a dive, it was all the price increase to the people with reservations. This told investors that the trucks are more expensive to manufactured that they anticipated, therefore this is going to cut into profit margins, which is not good for investors.

I would call Vivian's stock price slide more of a market correction than anything else. EV automakers like Tesla and rivian are insanely overvalued compared to their more traditional peers, and sometimes it takes a jolt like Amazon partnering with Stellantis to make delivery vans, for people to wake up.
They clearly don't have hiring standards, this year alone 2 drivers have run over my mailbox and one of them slammed into the guardrail on my bridge ripping the anchor bolts up from the concrete 🙄

I live in a town 30 mins from Normal IL where Rivian's main plant is and we actually had two of our workers leave us and go to Rivian. They both claim everything is rolling strong there and production is ramping more each day it seems. I wouldn't touch "the dip" on any stocks that have IPO'd during the pandemic. Rivian won't be anywhere near profitable for years, and we're about to experience a mild recession as the FED raises rates and people realize we vastly over anticipated inflation in both the housing and new/used vehicle market. When people have to start treating money like money again instead of blowing a ton of it, and then getting more for free from the government, like they have been for the past 22 months, we're going to see an overabundance of supply and little to no demand at anywhere near these prices - and that goes for stocks too. We've barely seen a dip yet compared to what's coming.

Yeah some things on these EV's are needlessly over engineered. No knobs is one. Another are the handles that pop out. What do I do when my truck freezes over? Am I locked out of my truck because the motors can't push through the ice?

200mi isn't going to cut it for commercial use. Especially in the midwest where ev's get half the range during the winter. Amazon trucks will be stuck sitting on the side of the road more than actually out delivering packages

Electric vehicles still mined and produced with good ole gas and oil. Never giving up on my fuel injected. I like being able to go 500+ miles in a day. In a fast moving world sometimes you just gotta get it and get there not plan to plug in half way there for the night.
Yeah, everything does. It’s a bit naïve however for you to think we won’t have 500 to 1000 mile electric cars in the future. ICE cars will still be around for the people that enjoy them. Not a requirement for the people that just want to get to work. Jay Leno in my opinion has the best take on electric cars. He equates it to when horses were replace and industries flourished for the enthusiastic recreation as it became a pleasure not a requirement.
Donut made a video explaining that EV's are still using less CO2 than gas powered cars, with the Produktion CO2 Footprint of both included. And the lucid air can drive 600 miles or something like that, so EV's will soon overtake the range of gas powered cars.

I'm looking forward to some good deals on fleet vans. As far as the EV market goes, I'm in no hurry to run out and purchase new tech. I'm a huge supporter of EV tech. I'm also a realist who lives in the middle of nowhere in the midwest U.S.
I have a few reasons why I'm not currently interested in EV:
1. Cost
2. Availability of parts
3. Ease of maintenance
4. No proven track record
5. Infrastructure
In a few years when EV tech is far more established, I may consider an EV option. As it stands, I'm sticking to the tried-and-true combustion engines.

None of the reasons you listed actually apply:
1. Lower cost per mile
2. No parts required as they are exceptionally reliable
3. Schedule maintenance mostly eliminated and a fraction of combustion van maintenance
4. Already a proven track record for EV's which have over a decade of use already.
5. What infrastructure would you need? For delivery or company vans, charge them at the company or at home. No brainer.
Replacing delivery cars (Amazon, USPS…) is pretty much overdue at this point.
It just hurts to see how they start the engine, drive 100 feet, stop the engine, and do it again. Huge stress on ICE engines, very inefficient, and the most polluting way to drive a car.
EV is just better for this purpose in every way.
EV delivery vans and boring commuters save petrol for fun cars. I’m in.

@@bennynagon9322 it fluctuates, but yes, unless you own a flex fuel vehicle and a wood lot or equivalent so you can make your own fuel (and pay road tax on it separately) it won’t get much cheaper to use an Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle.

I look at van prices every month. Prices are close to when I got mine last October, which was still overpriced but not like insane early 2022 pricing. Only problem is now the interest rates on loans are 3% higher. Commercial loans always have higher rates too. I bet it's 8% right now.
I would be surprised if Amazon didn't buy a larger stake in Rivian now that the price is down and make another 50 billion once the stock rebounds after high consumer satisfaction and increased demand.

Those Stellantis Promasters look like a huge improvement over the regular Dodge ones we are currently using. At least at the DSP I work for they are super basic, back up camera and that's about it. We do have a bunch of Ford Transit vans that are much better but I can't wait to have whatever EVs we get eventually.

They are based on the European Fiat version, so they should be totally different.
I still haven't heard a solution to what they are going to do with all the "Non-recyclable" parts on those lithium batteries at end of life. There will be the next environmental problem and it will be huge. I guess they will just bury them and stay quiet.

Have any of you done the back of the napkin calculations as to how much electricity would be required to switch over every vehicle currently on the road? Would also be fun to figure out how many wind turbines and or solar panels would be required and how much land mass they would cover.
Remember that refining oil uses up a lot of electricity, as less oil is refined you can divert that electricity to charging more vehicles.
Right now, there are enough solar cells in the world, that once no longer viable, will dwarf the insoluble plastic waste that was around five years ago.
Do you really want a mountain of those higher than your plastic trash on the outskirts of town? They don't recycle them.

The math on this is relatively simple. We know that refining oil into gasoline per gallon (petrol) requires around 6kWh. That is enough energy to drive an electric car around 25 miles (40Km).
So, a lot of the energy required for EV's is already being spent (wasted) on fossil fuel production.
Also, talking about how much "land mass" wind turbines would cover would be minimal as offshore turbines are where the biggest growth is and where the largest turbines are being installed.
The same applies to solar. When you put solar on a rooftop, no land mass is lost, the roof is already there. There are millions of square miles of rooftop space around the worlds that are basically wasted today, which could hold a solar array with zero additional space needed.
Just take a look at the airport terminals and parking garages at a decent sized airport and the massive amount of rooftop space which could power the entire airport and send the surplus to the neighboring towns and cities.

Off-peak power draw already exists.
Recycling. Already exists and is being scaled up.
Wind and solar produce power just fine.
All of the solutions exist, people just put blinders on trying to come up with excuses why they wont work.
