I'm just now realizing after editing this that Goodreads scrapped a few categories this year! I think they scrapped graphic novels, middle grade, children's books, and poetry! I am actually so bummed about the poetry category being scrapped because that's how I find out what all the popular poetry books of that year are, so that's a bummer! I am also mad about the graphic novels category as a huge fan of graphic novels and manga. Let me know how you feel about those categories being scrapped and "Romantasy" being added??? Also let me know which books do you think got snubbed this year??

I don’t mind the ones that got eliminate but I’m glad for the Romantasy so that it isn’t bleeding/dominating the fantasy category.

I would like to see childrens, middle grade, graphic narratives (combining graphic novels, manga, and illustrated novels), and poetry, as well as separating YA into more categories because it was weird seeing a ghost book in fantasy instead of horror and the gen YA fiction was such a grab bag.

I was so excited at the fact they actually added Romantasy. Books like Fourth Wing often overshadow high fantasy novels when the focus is more on romance rather than the fantastical element. Not all Fantasy readers are reading for the angst or smut.
I'm very disappointed that they completely removed categories though...It doesn't really make sense. But I guess these "awards" never really make sense.

Weird that they x out actual Poetry is like a literary category. How can they say they are true readings award ala reader choice awards. Thar would be like Mtv movie awards not having a award for best teen drama or no horror category

I didn't even notice they removed graphic novels and poetry!! But despite Romantasy being a popular genre this year, we all know it was created specifically for Fourth Wing. I'm starting to become disenchanted with the Goodreads Choice Awards because of stuff like that.

    • @kindlesandcandles
      @kindlesandcandles ปีที่แล้ว +2

I don’t think it was created specifically for The Fourth Wing, I think The Fourth Wing helped get this genre much more attention. There are soooooo many books in this genre, some YTers have entire Chanel’s dedicated to romantasy, so 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm happy they added the Romantasy category but it's so dumb that they removed categories - more categories seems better, like what do they have to lose by having more categories?!? Also, I've read a number of the books that have been nominated and out of all them I was so happy to see Bright Young Women nominated, hands down one of my favorite books I've read in really long time.

The Romanticy category is something that fantasy booktube community have requested since forever. And I am very happy they got split because I feel the readers are very different and they will be able to find recommendations more easily this way ❤ And it wasn’t just Fourth Wing, if we look back, fantasy romances have taken high places and even won prior years

It sucks they took out poetry and graphic novels, but I'm most pissed that they removed middle grade/children's category, there are so many great books being published each year and it just completely gets ignored so we can drool over horny dragons some more. Katrina Leno put out a middle grade this year, Nina LaCour just put out a children's book one or two weeks ago, we got sequels in series by Lora Senf and Kalyn Josephson, Sophie Cameron published a new one that's been getting some literary awards, the fact none of them are recognized here by the wider GR community just leaves me speechless. Anyway, fun video Gabby, thank you!

I’m actually really happy that they got a Romantasy category. Last year I think one of the JLA books won in the fantasy category and a lot of people were kind of upset. And Romantasy has been such a big category this year, it would be pretty crazy to just have one fantasy to sum up all of thatttt. 12:22

i 100% agree that they added romantasy for fourth wing. and also probably not to piss off fantasy readers by letting all the tiktok books take over. but getting rid of so many categories was just stupid. goodreads makes it abundantly clear each year that user satisfaction is not their concern 🤣

I think adding romantasy was smart because soooooo many book in the fantasy category the last few years have all been fantasy romance because they’re so popular, and it was taking away from traditional fantasy having a nomination. I’m a big FanRo reader and most of the ones nominated in the new category have been the most popular this year! Still mad though that they took away other categories, like why???

Pleasantly surprised to see Natural Beauty getting nominated! Totally agree The Writing Retreat should be there (I didn't realize it's average rating is so low...😭) For me Yellowface actually makes sense to be in the fiction category rather than mystery thriller. I think if Fourth Wing won the Fantasy category (which if it was there it will), there will be riot from certain group of readers 🤣 For romance I'm surprised Forget Me Not by Julie Soto isn't there.

I agree that the writing retreat was good and I would’ve liked to see it on the list, but I do think it’s valid that any book with under a 3.5 average rating shouldn’t be eligible. If anything, the bar should be set even higher, maybe 3.75. 3.5 is super low to be considered a winner in a contest that is based on popular vote.

  • @sunshinelorena

I am so glad I was not the only one who looked at the thriller list and the romance list and was like I have never heard of so many of these. I feel like this year in general there hasn't been a big hype book year apart from Fourth Wing. I feel like a romanstay is needed as it's own category as there are so many of them and it is becoming so popular. Paris' memoir is so good!

I'm just out here spreading the good word about I Keep my Exoskeletons to Myself!! This book is PHENOMENAL. It was such a left field nomination honestly cause there are only like 700 reviews?? But it blew my mind. It's not a true sci-fi book imo but if anyone reads this comment, I hope that this compels you to check out Exoskeletons!! It won't win cause it's not super popular, but I'm SO EXCITED that other people might check it out

these books are the straightest romance picks i've ever seen for the choice awards. not a single one looks queer and each category is distinctively white. i feel like booktok had had only a bad influence this year because the choice awards have always been a popularity contest but it's just embarrassing now. i was a bookseller for most of this year and i've heard of hardly any in any category and i'm guessing that's because i don't use tiktok :/

I'm glad that Romantasy has been added as a category as it's a genre that's become popular and I may use the picks to start reading more in that genre. But I'm so surprised about the other categories being scrapped, especially the graphic novel category.
I read quite a bit of fantasy and I'm surprised that there were a couple in the category that I've not even heard about? Also I'm a bit shocked that He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker-Chan wasn't included in the fantasy category as I was expecting to see it due to being a sequel to a popular fantasy book released a few years ago.
I feel like I haven't read as much new releases as I usually do this year but I've got plenty on my tbr. I got some catching up to do 😅

And David Ellis, Look Closer not being on the list? BONNNKKKK. I voted for None of this is True. The Secret Life of Flora Lea and Hang The Moon were both very good. When you agree with Gabby for most part, but so glad when The Writing Retreat do not make it to the list

I hate that they scrapped graphic novels, poetry and middle grade, but they added romantasy. I really like reading the other genres but I absolutely don't like romantasy. I get why they would add it, but does it really have to take the place of a whole bunch of other categories? I personally also didn't recognise any book in the romantasy category except "Fourth Wing" and I'm 99% sure that book will win...

Great video Gabby! A little disappointed in the romance category that we don’t see many (if any? I would have to look again) POC authors or LGBTQA rep outside of Pucking Around (which I believe is male/male romance). I would’ve loved to see Kristina Forrest or Before I Let Go by Kennedy Ryan on this list! I suspect you’re correct and Emily Henry will win, which is a bummer because it’s not my favorite from her by far.
There’s quite a bit of spice, by The Right Move by Liz Tomforde is one of my absolute faves, and she’s still indie published as of now - I think that’s getting my vote!

Divine Rivals is good but I was left wishing it wasn't YA. The concept is so good but the execution reads very YA. I wish it was an adult fiction/ romance/ fantasy. I always find YA to be a little disappointing but if you don't mind that kind of "writing limitations" then it's a good book.
