  • A widespread CrowdStrike issue cased an outage that is disrupting flights, banks, media outlets and companies around the world.
    Escalating disruptions continued hours after the technology company said it was gradually fixing an issue affecting access to Microsoft 365 apps and services.
    The website DownDetector, which tracks user-reported internet outages, recorded growing outages in services at Visa, ADT security and Amazon, and airlines including American Airlines and Delta.

"Trust in the cloud" and "Don't open or service your own equipment" and constant updates and being always online has removed the need to have any tech skills. Even if we had the skills most tech won't let you easily manipulate it and you have to resort to backdoor methods just to try and fix something yourself.

This was VERY common. Don't even get me started on what we did when we got a new audio or graphics card. If that did not work, we started over and tried again til we got it fixed. So yes, people today are ignorant on the computer compared to back then.

      To be fair, a lot of tech people worked around the clock up to the impending date to prevent y2k from affecting things. Since years were stored as 2 digits, some important stuff had to be updated to the 4 digit quickly, or everything marked as 00 for 2000 would have been interpreted as 1900 or worse.
      I know our work has some bad data still where some invalid things were marked to start at year 0001 because they only input 01 in the db. No one ever fixed them because they weren't important.
      You can feel free to think of it as the thought of the problem was so scary that people all banded together to fix it before it could become a problem.

    • @andrewd7112
      @andrewd7112 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Y2K was the best example of risk management in all of human history.
      1. Years ahead of time, people figured out it would be a problem - I first heard of it about 5 years earlier.
      2. Every one was warned of the risks and could prepare for failures. Unfortunately, this went overboard with conspiracy theories and near panic in some cases.
      3. Smart people spent years of difficult effort working to fix the computer systems before the failures would happen. These efforts worked and almost all problems were prevented.
      Unfortunately, most people remember the warnings and panic but completely forget the years of work to prevent the problems. So now when they hear warnings about things such as climate change, forever chemicals, microplastics, etc, they ignore the warnings. People keep learning the wrong lessons.
