  • In this video, I show you first hand on how to draw realistic clouds using different shading, blending, erasing and texture techniques to create a fully detailed realistic sky with clouds.
    Song is from CCmixter and is called Soul Control from BO Crew

    Supplies for this drawing:
    Canson Classic Cream Drawing Paper
    Pencils: 2B, 4B
    Blending Stump
    Blending Cloth
    Kneaded Eraser
    Tuff Stuff Eraser Stick
    Large White Eraser
    When I draw the sky in, I picture where I want the clouds and will leave those areas white. I will first shade the sky in with a 2H or HB pencil in a single hatching motion. Try not to vary the angle too much because it will put too much texture into the sky. I will then go over that area with a 2B pencil and make the sky rather dark. After the shading is completed, I will go back into the sky with a blending stump and will blend the bottoms of the clouds with the sky to make them fade. Then using the kneaded eraser, place it on the tops of the mountains and give it a small twisting motion. This will give the clouds a wispy look to them. It helps to convey movement. Then using the dirty blending stump, start to shade the clouds in a bit. Then using any eraser, erase out parts of the clouds again to create volume. I wanted puffy clouds in this picture so I did this several times over to give me the desired effect.

    You know that clouds have always been the most troubling thing for me to draw? I seriously struggled with them. I practiced with them so much until I was able to finally start drawing them. Once I did that, I perfected the technique so that I could easily draw them and that is what I did in this tutorial here. Glad to see that you enjoyed it!

    For anyone who doesn't have a "blending thing" Roll up a piece of paper into a point, stab a hard surface with the point (not super hard) until the pointy bit is a hard-ish dull "point" and just use that! Worked awesome for me!

      i have learned the same practical technique in college. it's pretty cool. if you can't get easily your goal for doing this, just keep trying. it will definitely end up positively.

    After watching your tutorial I had a go at my art class, the other students were amazed at the results, as was I. The leader of the class said that I should frame the finished picture. Have to be careful with the blending stumps though as if too much pressure is used the you can burnish the paper surface. Thank you.

    People are complaining about the music. My personal preference is that on instructional videos where there is speaking, music should be left out. Having said that, this music is not really distracting to me, but video would be perfect without it. For future videos, i would leave it out. That should please everybody. You are a gifted artist AND instructor. I am picky who I subscribe to and just added you. Thank you SO much for your instruction.

    I understand where you are coming from about being able to replicate something perfectly. For me, I like the realistic look with textures and details but I like to add my own touch to it. I feel like if I were to do a drawing detail for detail, I would basically be trying to take the place of a printer or something. I don't know how else to really put it. I just enjoy drawing and putting my own personality into it :)

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do that from time to time. Not always. I also do not really lay my hand on the page with a lot of pressure. But I am fully aware of what hand oils can do to a drawing haha. You may not see it in this video, but I always keep a fan brush ready to brush away eraser shavings and excess pencil. I can't do a drawing without one handy.

    Blending stumps are tightly compact rolls of paper used to blend the graphite. Other artists might use their fingers to do the same task. Blending stumps do a better job with it though. They are also called tortillons but those are a little bit different. They are hollow instead of being solid.

    This is where being able to visually simulate light in your mind can help out a lot. You don't have to be able to see every single detail but it will help. During a lighting storm, you probably would not have the sun as a light source because it is being blocked out. Wherever the lighting is will make very strong and high contrasting highlights in that immediate area and dissipate as it gets further away from that light source. I haven't tried it but that is how I would think about it.

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yep, that should do you just fine. I usually recommend to use at least a sketch book. The tooth of the paper helps for drawing texture a lot.

    I used to be very critical over my work and then I began to question why I was that way. The few classes I was able to take back in college really taught me how to loosen up my drawing style and to just let things flow. That is when I really began to love drawing. I hope that you can get into a nice college for drawing. I know I would really like to find some place that I can go to part time where I am just to help improve myself. Take a life drawing class if you can. That one taught me a lot!

    It is actually called Chamois Skin. You can use many other objects in its place. Cotton balls, T shirts, rags, tissues, felt. You can use a lot of different tools to create the desired effect. And yes I try not to blend with my fingers so much because the oils in your hands can do pretty bad things. It makes an area of a page very hard to erase because the graphite will stick to the spots with your skin oil on it. Not a good thing. Thanks for stopping by!

    Yeah another one of my friends was saying the same thing about Bob Ross. Funny stuff. But I can relate to what you said about color. Different colors create contrast. In this you need to use tone to create contrast. It can sometimes be hard to do a whole picture in black and white because you really only have 1 color to convey each detail and tone of the image. Varying that one single tone takes practice. But I enjoy it. Makes for a very dramatic picture in the end. Thanks for stopping by!
