It's always a shame to see people instantly go to suggesting playing games or watching trailers from which those soundtracks are from. Personally, I'm mostly here as someone slowly getting into music, and I enjoy the unbiased analysis. It's far more interesting to see which parts of a theme can create specific emotions, and having the context often creates analytical biases. I didn't see by myself how The Step Below Hell and Heaven's Hell-Sent Abomination could be seen as linked to each other on my own, since in-context they're strinctly unrelated, but now I think I can understand the musical links at play :p

It's a shame that Calamity's fandom pressured DM DOKURO so much. The toxicity was just uncalled for, that man had given it his all, and he definitely delivered a masterpiece after masterpiece. But I suppose that impatience turns people into demons

the terraria community is pretty toxic kinda like all gaming communities unfortunately, and people who spend their heart and soul for the community are pushed out of the spotlight, and leave because pretentious axxholes get so angry because of one thing in a song that literally is better than pretty much everything they have composed and made in their life, and spread their annoyance all over until it escalates to serious stuff, like *ACTUAL DEATH THREATS,* over music that is 1000% better than Terraria's OST.

While the boss tracks are awesome in Calamity,I personally think that the biome tracks are the unsung heroes. They're the tracks you spend most of the game listening to,so they do most of the legwork. And the biome tracks added by Calamity are just... Magnificent.

You already pointed out the duality of "The step below hell" and "The heaven send abomination" but I am here to explore that thought a little more. "The step below hell" is the theme of the Brimstone Crags, which is quite literally hell, yet it is blooming with life, thus the music is generally darker, but with a little hope. "The heaven sent abomination" on the other hand is the theme of the Astral Infection, which came from space. Its heaven, but all dead. Thus the music is generally more etherial and upbeat, but with a trace of hopelessness.

Quick explanation: Heaven's Hell Sent Gift is a previous old Calamity version of The Heaven-Sent Abomination. Calamity changed and improved a lot since the first song was used, and as a result to the complete rework of the Astral Meteor Biome into a full-on Surface and Underground Biome, the second one was made to reflect the changes.

  • @necronixgravedigger7455
    @necronixgravedigger7455 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +74

The main reason these themes are so much more serene (comparatively) is due to the fact that these are themes of the biomes-areas/places- in the mod, compared to the other themes you've listened to, which are themes of bosses-intense and powerful fights that test both your skill and resolve(in terms of lore)- and the music reflects these different circumstances very efficiently. Dokuro truly did a phenomenal job with both his high- intensity boss themes, and much more serene/unsettling (you'll most likely listen to Those tracks later :)) area themes... He truly understood how to incorporate emotions into his melodies...
Also, some of these themes may sound familiar, as these themes are from the biomes where certain bosses are fought. "The step below hell" plays in The Profaned Crags (Later renamed The Brimstone Crags to make the lore make more sense) and you battle the Brimstone Elemental, whose theme-"Left Alone"- contains obvious motifs (the Boss's theme came out first, and the area theme was given motifs based on said boss theme)
The Heaven-sent trilogy (as I like to call it) take place in the Astral infection, a star-borne disease that spread across the land, birthed from an infected meteor spat out by an infected Star-God (Astrum Deus, whose theme "Pest of the Cosmos" reflects this connection with motifs)
Interstellar Stomper is the theme of a Machine created to learn more about the infection, but was overcome itself, and its theme also reflects this relationship. Cosmic disgust was the theme of a Scrapped boss, whose theme was a favorite of many, this Dokuro incorporated Cosmic disgust into Interstellar Stomper. The background story behind Cosmic Disgust's creation is hilarious as it traces back to an incident Dokuro encountered in Slime Rancher, and he channelled his hatred for a specific slime into that song.
Honestly, quite a creative person. He describes the thought process behind his songs in the description of each video... Might be interesting for you to read (not talking about reaction, just for you to get insight on the thought process behind each track, as you'd mentioned you'd like to see)

All of the custom areas added by the mod are dangerous, but none of them have the same level of danger as the bosses. You can relax for a moment, as long as you stay on your toes. Interesting hearing the notes about restraint and how more is being pulled from these more low key and softer tracks. From someone who knows part of the Calamity lore(and is currently in progress of playing it), what I interpret from these 3 songs is:
    - The Step Below Hell: It's a mix of sinister ambience with a bit of melancholy, nostalgia and past hopes, because it plays in the Brimstone Crags, a place that resides in hell which had one or many cities(I don't remember exactly but I do remember one city) being Azafure the main habitable place or city for a raze(don't exactly know if they are humans, but at least they are very similar to humans I think they are like humans but with demon-like horns), a city that, besides the constant attacks and roaming dangers of the demons and atrocities that lived in hell too, was prosperous and alive enough to have very advanced technology and overall happiness and prosperity on their poblation. In the timeline your character exists in, the Brimstone Crags are a ruin now after that great "overall cosmic catastrophe" or that big overall cosmic "Calamity"(hence why the name, between other reasons), and that's why the theme is such a sinister and dark theme, symbolizing that it is now a mess, a rotten place boiling in anger, agony, havoc and hate, but also a melancholic, nostalgic and almost hopeful theme, symbolizing that what it is now just burning scorched ruins was once a prosperous and hopeful place full of life, happiness and magic-technologic style of living, that was fueled by the magical energy that dropped constantly from the ceiling of hell above Azafure(and that magic energy comes from the abyss of a very deep sea above hell, being the energy of a goddess of life, but that's another part of the complex and long lore of Calamity mod that is a huge mess of conections and chain reactions that caused the world to be as it is). Although your point of view of finding a companion and having help on your adventure was a nice and cool idea I should say, not quite the case in the Calamity lore but indeed a very cool way of seeing it.
    - Heaven's Hell-Sent Gift: Another theme of ambience, for the astral meteor. Basically in Calamity Mod the "sky" refers more to the islands floating in the clouds and... yeah, an sky, duh. But the HEAVEN in Calamity Mod usually symbolizes more about what is ABOVE the sky, the cosmos. The cosmos is usually referred to as "heaven" in a very symbolic manner, since a lot of gods, cosmical beings and superior entities come from said cosmos, and one of said entities is Astral Deus, the god of stars, a being so powerful that his own presence and essence causes everything around it to infect with said essence, making everything become cosmic-like creatures and causing the ecosystem to transform into "crystalized cosmos"? if we could call it that way? (something like that, let's just say it does cosmical things), and some meteors of said infection fall to Earth. That's when the theme comes in, a theme of ambience of intrigue, mystery, almost alienic, extraterrestrial, like you are investigating an extraterrestrial ecosystem that came from the sky in the form of a meteor, and you don't understand a single thing of what your eyes are witnessing(the fauna, the monoliths, the cosmic crystals, the creatures, the distorted matter), with the drum beat being that constant sense of danger because the god-like cosmic fauna could try(and will try) to either infect you or eliminate you at sight, like if the ecosystem was a living fortress or hive mind that tries to make sure their cosmic monoliths don't get touched in the slightest and that their raze prosperes. The "Heaven's" and "Gift" from the title representing the "holy" aspect of the infection, symbolizing it comes from heaven/cosmos, and the "Hell" from the title representing it is something rather destructive or despiseful since it is a very invasive, aggresive and infectious ecosystem.
    - Then Heaven-Sent Abomination: The second part of the previous song, yet again another ambience song(you can kinda identify and differentiate which DM Dokuro songs are intense fight songs or calm repeating ambience songs depending on how they are made, as you said, these 3 songs don't have any strong heavy metal section or anything, they are ambience songs with a more repeating calm tone that is kept throughout all the song). It represents that you are going deeper into the infected biome and discovering/learning/understanding more about the infection, yet under a big veil of unknown extraterrestrial stuff and constant danger, a living biome that clearly doesn't want you(or any guests in general) to be there. And that's why it is so similar to the previous song
Hope this helps you comprehend the meaning of the songs better. At this point I think you already got the idea about the world of Calamity Mod being a universe that is a huge boiling and roting mess where the concept of "hope" is just a nostalgic memory about the times where the world wasn't bullshit and full of agony and atrocities, a hell where even gods get punished and tortured, like a jungle where only the "law of the strongest" decides who is in the top of the foodchain, a world that cannot be saved anymore, because it already lost eons ago, now being just a mere remnant of what it previously was, with a few super-fauna and hyper evolved ecosystems trying to fight one over another, and with a few reigns of survivors forming and trying to repoblate the world in a universe where life will never be the same even if they actually manage to repoblate the world. The title says it all I guess, a world with no heroes or villains, but rather suffering souls, crazy and mad gods losing their minds and a few entities in the top of the foodchain watching everything slowly burn to ashes(even your main character is not a hero in the slightest, in fact it just makes the situation of the world even worse just to fulfill a thirst and desire of vengeance), very depressive stuff 💀

Despite of what happens to DM Dokuro and what've he been through that cause him to make decision to leave everything behind and forget them once and for all,
there is no denying fact that he's the one who create all of these Masterpieces, makes every single of them unique and memorable, regardless of he regreting it or not.
Yes, we understand. Mentioning about Calamity mod in front of him could only reopen the unbearable wound caused by the Calamity Fandom to him. But hey, it's never be wrong to appreciate the Masterpieces that many people acknowledged it without necessarily credit him
bc in this case, exclusively, we also don't want to hurt him by directly mentioning Calamity Mod. Like i said earlier, he's on the edge of his life and trying to leave everything behind for the sake of his mental recovery.
And i hope you could continue this analysis content until it reached Stained, Brutal Calamity. Not for the sake of DM Dokuro but for the existence of the music itself🔥🔥🔥

the place where "heaven's sent abomination" plays in is a starborn disease afflicting the land called the Astral infection the theme keeps the cosmic feeling but also emphasises the "infection" part about it i think

The theme 'The step below hell' is the tone it is for a reason. It's slow, sad and dramatic as the lore is that the biome this plays in was once a bustling civilization. They were sentient being living normal lives. Every single one of them, as well as their home we're destroyed by the games main big bad. This music plays in place of destroyed homes. A destroyed people. And their heart broken ruler. I'd assume that the uplifting sound is you. You coming through. You being the only one who can finally ease the pain of the broken queen. To set her free.

I beg you, once you are done with DM Dokuro's tracks, give the rest of the mod a listen. The Exo Mech themes are fantastic, and if you're really adventurous you can check out a fanmade version called Dei Machinae, it's one of my favorite pieces of 'video game' music right now, even if it isn't actually in any game.

With the step below, I almost get a sense of longing from it. I'm pretty sure within the lore it states that the brimstone crag(which this song is made for) is a fallen civilization. It's almost like its a song of longing for what once was. Although if I completely remove myself from any prior knowledge, the sense of hopefulness does inherently shine through, but I still feel it more accurate to describe it as a piece of longing for what once was.

  • @angeldude101

Now that we're going through area themes, going by DM Dokuro's playlist, that just leaves Treasures Within The Abomination, the underground version of what was hear here (minus The Step Below Hell), along with wasteland, Hadopelagic Pressure, void, and Threats of the Ocean Floor, which all concern the Sulphurous Sea and the Abyss. Lastly... I don't need to say it, you already know (plus its prologue Catastrophes before the calamity).
Interestingly, while The Step Below Hell comes much earlier in the soundtrack, it actually seems to have most in common with the theme for She Who Shall Not Be Named, and could've gone in the same video along with Interlude 3, leaving Treasures Within The Abomination to go in this video, but oh well. Regardless, we'll probably get the Abyss themes before coming to DM Dokuro's Grand Finale. (I've been deliberately refraining from listening to it before you get to it.)

Main theme: To Sleep, Dreaming (contour 4)
    The Depths theme: Oscillation.
The Depths (combat): Lacrimosa Dies Illa.
GreatHive: Of Chitin Kith And Kin.
    Duke Erisia's theme: Sin-Smelted Scoriae
The Eternal Gale (floor 1) The Killing Wind
And finally, The Gideshu March (Band Version)

alot of today's themes are songs that play when in certain areas of the world... thy ilicit an almost "broken" feeling, like these places shouldn't exist, and many of them only exist because of some horrific event
anything astral infection for example... its a land plagued by a space-born pathogen (hence "heaven sent") birthed from the death of an ancient diety-esque entity that twists the creatures and land around it, reminiscent of the crimson and corruption of the base game

  • @TheOrangeBottleCap

based on both personal exploration from where that first theme played and also the lore for the area in general both from its items and boss the story for the area was about how it used to be a thriving civilization like that of vanilla hell, however unlike vanilla hell where it was buried in its on hellish nature the profaned crag was buried in a bad history with an emphasis on betrayal and abandonment to my understanding (something like that) which is also shown in the boss of the area who was once their goddess who once harbored a kindness for the biome's people but was thusly corrupted by anger and grief for the land it called home, its a rather somber and saddening story for such a hellish place neighboring hell
for heaven's sent gift and for its brother and sister songs the astral infection is a literal infection, a galactic virus that quickly spreads thriving on the cold climate of the snow biome now calls its new habitat, the song itself is supposed to invoke a sort of feeling of dread with a greater theme of sadness for seeing how bad things have gotten

Though, if you haven’t yet, the Hyperlight Drifter soundtrack is amazing, though definitely much more… pixelated(?) but it perfectly matches the tone and feel of the game itself.
If you go for TUNIC, The Knight, The Librarian, and The Administrators are very energetic.
