- 2 thumbs down from Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper for The Cat in the Hat. Although I remember liking this film as a kid, time has exposed me to the truth that this film was a slap in the face to the legacy of Dr. Suess.

Just rewatched this with my gf, had a couple drinks and we were laughing the whole time. Def a good watch if you have the right group. And RIP Siskel and Ebert :-(

Where I lived, Cat in the Hat bypassed the first run theaters completely, and went straight to the dollar theater on opening day.,
When I saw this movie in theaters as a kid I thought it was a horror movie! XD

Americans won't go see animated films unless they're Disney, and maybe not even then unless they're CGI, and CGI would have defeated the whole purpose of animating it.
Even Mike Myers realizes this was one of his worst movies. After THIS misfire was released, the Theodor Geisel estate refused to ever permit any other live action projects, and no one blamed them.
I'd take this over "The Love Guru" anyday of the week.
This was the worst thing Myers done. Worse than THE LOVE GURU. Well, this time you can't totally blame Myers--look what they threw him into. What a cesspool...
Personally, I think The Cat in the Hat killed Mike Myers’ career. Some think The Love Guru did that, but I think that just put it out of its misery.
On the bright side, Mike Myers has the Shrek movies under his belt.
This was some of his finest work. I’ve always loved it. The criticism of it has always been very obtuse and unfair.
I remember seeing this movie in theaters. I have it on DVD. Though I don’t like it as much now as I did back then. And I agree with some people saying that Mike Myers as the Cat in the Hat wasn’t as funny as Jim Carrey was when he did The Grinch.
Jesus Christ, Mike Myers went into Austin Powers shape, into Dr. Evil shape and into Shrek shape and lost his mojo on The Cat In The Hat.
The film was such a critical and financial flop that it caused Audrey Geisel, head of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, to order a permanent halt on live-action adaptations of Dr. Seuss' work.

This movie made me frown. It has the bad movie crown. I wish this film didn't have any sound. I wish this film was not around, but I was stuck to my seat bound. I'd rather watch The Fox and The Hound.

and for some reason, a lot of people defend them. mostly because they grew up watching them and they can't take off their nostalgia goggles to realize how gross they are
Jim Carreys Grinch is amazing though. That movie captures the spirit pretty effortlessly. Cat in the Hat is pretty terrible though.

His cinematography is honestly the best thing about this movie, some inspired angle shots and zoom-ins and very nice and sharp color grading.
He did the cinematography for The Birdcage, one of my Top 10 favorite movies.

Myers only agreed to make this movie because he was sued for backing out of filming a movie adaptation of his Sprockets sketch on SNL History would've been so much better with a Sprockets movie instead of this.

But seriously, if you want a good live-action version of The Cat in the Hat, watch The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss, a show made in the mid-90’s by the Jim Henson company.
I remember renting this at Blockbuster and enjoyed at age 5. 🤣

This was Alec Baldwin’s worst performance as the slobby neighbor. We never needed him to begin with.

How Mike Meyers got from Cat in the Hat by way of Bert Lahr absolutely mystifies me.
You know, at least the Jim Carrey Grinch has its moments, and this film was amazingly terrible. The new animated ones are kind of bland and forgettable with the exception of maybe Horton Hears a Who.
More like stupidly enjoyable yet visually whimsical/delightful, plus this stupidity is much better than son of the mask

I know this movie has gotten a lot of adult humor along with a mix of good jokes and bad jokes but it's actually not that bad and here are my thoughts and why the live action Cat In The Hat movie makes a good film to watch.
1. It teaches you unemployment and if you don't pay for the stuff that you own then they get repossessed. Like a TV, a car or other items.
2. It teaches you how to get along with others.
3. It teaches you teamwork. Like when Sally and Conrad shut the crate in The Mother of all Messes.
4. It teaches Joan to pay attention to her son Conrad about Larry's dirty methods of sending away Conrad to Military School so he can steal Joan's money and her house.
5. It teaches Conrad not to be a messy revel and Sally not being a bossy suck up.
6. It teaches you not to mess up your house before a party or a event. Like Joan's Meet and Greet party.
This is what I like about the movie because what makes it good are some life lessons that we learn in our everyday lives. Not only that in the behind the scenes Mike Myers said when he was a kid The Cat In The Hat was his favorite Dr. Seuss book because in the movie The Cat is a teacher and he is teaching Sally and Conrad not only to have fun but learn lessons along the way. Which is why this movie is not only fun and a good one to watch but it also teaches us life lessons in the movie as well when we get older and have jobs.
Other than that it's been 18 years since the live action Cat in the Hat movie was released in 2003 and I really love this movie. No really. Yes I know it got bad reviews but it's still a really good movie to watch and it's entertaining and I still watch this all the time. Mike Myers is a cool Cat In The Hat, Dakota Fanning is a cute Sally, Spencer Breslin is a great Conrad. The whole cast in this movie is great. If this is not your favorite live action Dr. Seuss film that's fine. Because it's just another version. This was never meant to replace the TV special. The live action version is just a different take on. This one talks about the characters of Sally and Conrad that were in the book and TV special that go on the adventures with The Cat and learning how to get along with each other. Also in the end of the movie they did share the blame and they both learned a lesion and it is a good character development for Sally and Conrad. The TV special will always be a classic that would make people laugh. But the live action version also makes people laugh. Can we all just get along. I mean that is what enjoying movies is all about. Enjoying both of them in different ways. I think I know why some people don't like this live action Cat In The Hat movie because it's kind of ripping off a movie that Mike Myers has been into before this movie. Like the Austin Powers movie series and it can be very hard for the viewers to understand whats going on and remember every little thing that's happening in the movie. So I don't blame this movie for being a bad one. I love how funny the movie is. This movie comes off as a really good Mike Myers flick and they took some of the best stuff from the Austin Powers movie series and create their own spin on things to extend the running time of the movie without going to far. Even though this live action Dr. Seuss movie is ripping off the Austin Powers movie series it's got a little twist to it. But it's still funny. Not only that there is no bad words in this movie. Like the live action Grinch movie this is comedy also done right. The critics are wrong about this movie. I don't listen to them of what they have to say about this movie. I just watch the movie and what my thoughts are on the movie to see if I like it or not. For me I like this movie. It's confusing why some people don't. I really don't know why some people don't like this live action remake of The Cat In The Hat. Some people prefer the live action Grinch movie. For me that's just wrong. I love both of theses live action Dr. Seuss films. But hey if we all hate the same thing then life would be boring. Just like Jim Carrey in the live action Grinch movie Mike Myers as The Cat In The Hat can be funny too. Also Alec Baldwin's performance as Larry Quinn is what made this movie for me. He really steals the show as the main antagonist who is a child hatting jellies lover of a signal Mom trying to marry Joan for her wealth and get rid of her son Conrad by sending him to military school. Not only that he is also a Slob, a lier and a dog knaper. And of cores the coolest villain defeat of what Larry got deserved in movie history. Larry got covered in purple slime in the end of the movie. Such a great thing they did. But over all I think this a good film because when I was a kid the live action Grinch movie was my first live action Dr. Seuss movie that I saw on DVD and the live action Cat in the Hat movie was my second and I grew up with this movie and I have a different opinion it and both of theses live action Dr. Seuss movies are both entertaining and funny. Plus the 2003 movie Cat In The Hat is another live action Dr. Seuss adaptation that's a classic. Although there are some kids from the 1970's that saw the TV special and they think that is way more better than the Mike Myers Cat In The Hat movie you should find time to see them both. I hope Universal Pictures will do a live action sequel based off the original sequel The Cat In The Hat Comes Back someday in the future. Since Audrey Geisel died in 2018 there is still hope for a live action sequel. I got an idea for The Cat In The Hat Comes Back live action remake. How about they would make it like Mary Poppins Returns but with a little twist to it. Because the two child stars Dakota Fanning and Spencer Breslin who played Sally and Conrad who are now in their 20s and 30s and Kelly Preston who played their Mom died last year. Alec Baldwin who played Larry is still alive and Mike Myers who played The Cat In The Hat is still alive too. So maybe Larry will come back to the Walden house to get his revenge on Sally and Conrad where Conrad is now married with kids of his own and Sally became an Aunt to Conrad's kids and The Cat will come back to help the family. By the way, I think I know why Audrey Geisel forbidden any future live action movies on Ted’s work because in the live action Cat In The Hat movie with all the subplots, the adult humor and the rip off the Austin Powers movie series. You can tell that they are running out of ideas for future live action Dr. Seuss adaptations. The Live Action Cat In The Hat movie was a good way to end the live action Dr. Seuss adaptations. Or is it? But who knows when they are going to do another live action Dr. Seuss adaptation. When The Cat In The Hat Comes Back Live Action Remake dose come down the line in the movie making business I bet they will bring back the 2003 cast and do a better job than they did with the first movie. It's been a very long time since the 2003 movie was released and it's about time they would do a sequel. When the live action Cat In The Hat movie get's it's 20th anniversary in 2023 then The Cat In The Hat Comes Back Live Action Remake will happen.

I Disagree with their opinion on How The Grinch Stole Christmas. On The Cat in the Hat I'm kinda divided. Let me just say it's not a good movie at all. There are some good Cinematography, great Production design and set design. Most of the jokes are stupid and not funny. But still I don't think it's the worst movie I've seen because I've seen so much worse films than this. So I don't know what to think about this movie.

Both the live action Grinch movie and the live action Cat in the hat movie are by far the best live action Dr. Seuss film adaptations.
I'm not a huge fan of the Illumination animated Dr. Seuss films that we got after Audrey Geisel forbidden future live action Dr. Seuss adaptations on Ted's work because sometimes they can be misguided to the books, the animated TV specials and the first two live action Dr. Seuss films.
I mean they did OK but they are not as good as the first three I was telling you about. After all both the live action Grinch and The Cat In The Hat movie are like a cartoon world come to life where you have one world where it's Christmas all the time with a backstory of The Grinch, The Mayor and Martha May when they were kids and another world where it's like Austin Powers because the sets, props and costumes are bright and colorful. Plus they both give you a difference and comparison to both the book and TV specials.

Ebert I love ya, and you usually have great takes but this is not one of them, The Cat in the Hat is a bizarre comedy and is absolutely hilarious, I think critics take comedies to seriously sometime and this movie is a prime example
