    I've connected many PVC pipes to those old cast iron sewer pipes using Fernco couplings. The connections are packed with oakum, and then lead is poured into the space. Great video as usual guys!

    That was oakum and lead and it was still used up into the early 80's.
    The oakum was packed in with special blunt chisels and the lead could either be poured in hot or packed in with the same chisels if you used lead wool instead of melted lead.
    P.S. Be careful with those drain chemicals guys, mixing them could cause an explosion.
    P.S.S. That shower drain was full of hair from both ends...yeah, I wouldn't touch that. That hair clog is where you needed to try the drain cleaners.

    • @thephoenixking1086

      I'm not sure that would have worked, the water-jet would have sandblasted most of the grime away since the piece is smaller yet sand blasted part is still same size.
      They could have also (since they had four quarters of the pipe, 2 halves cut in half) just put each liquid into its own quarter pipe and seal of the ends.

    Not a recommended method to clean a drain, but at a auto repair shop my father worked at every month or so they'd dump a box of battery acid down the shop drain to clean out all the grease and crap. Said it worked very well, though we can't imagine there was much left of the pipes.

  • @BIueChangeling
    @BIueChangeling 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes thats true in the past they used horsehair to seal the pipe. Now a days they use mostly hamp or a plasic sealing.

  • @darikmatters8866
    @darikmatters8866 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You pack the joint with Oakum (old rope with a little tar or bentonite mixed in to prevent rot) and pour molten lead to seal it.. Cast iron waste pipes are still used today with a "hubless" rubber connector.. It is still the best, it last a long time and is the quietest of all the sytems (a real big deal in an apartment building!)

    • @darikmatters8866
      @darikmatters8866 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And as far as I know, they never used horse hair.. plenty of old hemp, sisel and jute ropes to manufacturer into Oakum
      They used the horse hair in the scratch layer of plaster that goes onto wood lathing before Sheetrock and expanded metal lath.. Made very good fiber reinforcement

    Old house?
    I wanna see you check out a pipe from an older European house. 75 isn't that old for most of our houses.

    • @iggifer
      @iggifer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I recently changed my 100 year old pipe in my house, and I can only assume this one was not installed brilliantly, as mine (also cast iron) was still (pretty much) shiny inside. It was still silver-ish, no rust, no build up - nothing. It's all about having the correct fall so, ahem, solids, get washed down by liquid.

    • @KingBobbito
      @KingBobbito 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@iggifer It's also likely that your water isn't very hard, I've seen water lines look worse than this just because the water is so hard where I live.

    • @thephoenixking1086
      @thephoenixking1086 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KingBobbito They made a previous video of a standard water pipe and to me, the water pipe looks a LOT worse than this one shown here so probably same thing as what you mean.
      The fact some water pipes are worse looking than Toilet pipes (although not as much bacteria) still makes me feel ill though...

    • @WaterjetChannel
      @WaterjetChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I bought a house a couple years back and replaced all the cast iron. There was a section of 4” cast iron in the crawl space that was missing the top half from rust and who knows what else. It was no longer a pipe. It was a poop trough.

    • @StarlightLM
      @StarlightLM 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WaterjetChannel lol yea. That happens especially when there's a belly present. All that bacteria sit in one spot an just eats the pipe. But typically cast iron has a 50 year shelf life. Unless you do routine maintenance on it such as milling or water jetting ( essentially pressure washer for the inside of your sewer piping up to 3000psi )

    • @StarlightLM
      @StarlightLM 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      But I have seen houses around the dfw area that are 100 plus years old an the cast iron still looks in good condition. Just depends how well maintained it is

    lead and oakum the problem with cast is over time the metal deterioration gets worse eventually collapsing but cast iron is still commonly used in commercial such as hospitals due to Abs and pvc having a problem of warping or moving in the ground. and using draino and other harsh chemicals is not smart due to you putting poison into the water supply and usually causes more harm than good

    most of the gnarly looking "buildup" in the pipe was rust, good ol' iron oxide, which actually protects the iron pipe. granted, that was a significant amount and there was definitely some organic material caught in the nooks and crannies, but most of what you can see is rust. that's why the undiluted muriatic acid (aka hydrochloric acid), which you're supposed to dilute before using, did the best job and made smoke because it was working so fast. the actual nasty part was the hair buildup.

    When you really think about it, the 1940s weren't that long ago. They had computers, jet engines, advanced hydraulics, vaccines, nuclear bombs, nuclear reactors, processed foods, automatic transmissions, night vision, supersonic flight(Bell X-1), missiles that could reach outer space(V2), arc welders, and even vending machines back then. Heck, they even had transistors in the late 40s. The only thing they didn't have was microcircuits. Interesting that that recently they were using horse hair for something other than violin bows.
