Actually I don't recognize the bow I was using in the video. It looks like a modern bow (I don't own any of those) so I must have borrowed it from Martin Biller, in whose shop I made this clip. For what it is worth, a violin bow is fine for the top 5 strings of the viola d'amore, but for the lowest d and A, it is nice to have a bit more weight. My own viola d'amore bow weighs 65 grams.
@@thisisvioladamore thanks for the reply! how mysterious, haha. If/when I buy one, that's good to know, since I own a well made viola bow already. Or look perhaps a somewhat heavier weight baroque violin bow (the differences between the two for baroque bows are smaller anyway, from what I gather). Thanks!
What how many strings dose that fiddle have 12? Why would you ever need more than 8, or 4 for that matter, lol, Bach's 5 string cello comes to mind... It is an instrument to make chords sing though. Thank you for sharing it with us.
7 strings on top and another 7 underneath that helps create resonance. The design was to help deal with intonation issues. Some believe it had a lot of middle eastern influence as it shares a similar design to some of the instruments over there.
Very nice viola. Where can we get one of these? I see some on ebay from China. Is that where everyone is getting theirs? It's not cheap and I don't want to waste money on something defective.
@@thisisvioladamore Well. It's a matter of choice of tone , Iguess. There are violins that have 5 strings with the 5th tuning peg on the side of the neck. The vielle. So maybe those extra strings are for harmonics? My bother and Dad used to play a 12 string guitar. Daddy said they were for harmony. I know. I answered myself.
The 21st Prelude by Henri Casadesus is not especially difficult. Here is a good example of the most challenging music for the viola d'amore: th-cam.com/video/huouUtZJZF0/w-d-xo.html

I think this exact instrument, or an exact copy, is at display at morrey's music store. I recently saw it, and thought it was pretty cool.
Very cool!

Very nice, I would enjoy hearing a complete song on it, something that we all know maybe?

Great play! Did you use a violin or a viola bow?

Last I heard, Martin Biller, the maker of this viola d'amore, had one viola d'amore left: martinbillervioins@gmail.com

It sounds interesting. Why 14 strings?
This is an interesting question. I'm wondering how to answer it. Why does the violin have four strings?

@@patriciajrs46 Here is a long answer:th-cam.com/video/2QrvADCrbbU/w-d-xo.html. I'm still thinking about how to answer your question succinctly.
is it hard to play? with all that chords?
