Traditional Pottery-Making process | How to make traditional potteries

Traditional pottery-making in North India is an ancient craft that has been passed down through generations. The process begins with the preparation of clay, which is carefully kneaded and purified to remove impurities. The clay is then shaped into various forms, often using a potter's wheel or by hand-molding techniques.
Once the desired shape is achieved, the pottery is left to dry in the shade to prevent cracking. After drying, the pieces are meticulously smoothed and sometimes decorated with intricate patterns or motifs using natural pigments or simple tools.
The next crucial step involves firing the pottery. This is where the "sagar" plays a vital role. The sagar is a large, cylindrical clay container used to hold and protect the pottery during the firing process. The pottery pieces are carefully stacked inside the sagar, which is then placed in a larger kiln. The sagar shields the pottery from direct flames, ensuring even and controlled heating.
The firing process, which can take several hours, transforms the clay into durable and hard pottery. After cooling, the pieces are removed, inspected, and sometimes further polished or glazed, depending on the intended finish. The result is a beautifully crafted piece of pottery, deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of North India.
