    Cool set up! I might have to convince my parents to allow me to put one of these in my backyard. They don't like the idea of digging for an in ground pond so this is certainly a good alternative.

      The Real J.R. Yeah I had the same problem, my wife wasn’t really into the idea of digging a huge hole in the backyard, especially since we have a young child that could easily fall into it. You can find these totes for cheap too. Good luck on the parental convincing haha. Thanks for watching!

    Nice setup! I have Minnows, Bluegill and a Largemouth bass in my IBC Tote

    For the tub with the electronics I would cover it with a tarp for added protection, and cut a small board top fit on top so water doesn't pool in the center. I really like this setup and I'm looking forward too watching this progress.

    I glad to see you making videos again. To insulate you should use the foam spray and foam board with wood on the exterior, also for the lid sliding just use a few self tapping screws to hold it in place.

    On the inside of your lid you can see where the rail I'd and use self tapping screws and the lid won't slide anymore great setup just picked up 3 to convert

    Hi, Just getting into rain harvesting and researching IBC totes and happened onto your video. I never thought to use those containers as “ponds”, but I find it interesting. Side FYI regarding your plastic electronics box, I’m unsure how warm your equipment gets but even without rain, condensation can form when cold morning air that is cooler than the warm ambient air inside the container, or inside warmer encased equipment housings and reduce equipment life. Check your dew point temp against the thermostat inside the box. Much like inside a car in the cold, your warm breath against the cold surface, condensation forms. You can mitigate with desiccant methods that will reduce humidity. Even some minor venting might equalize the relative temperatures inside and outside of box which could reduce the likelihood of container-rain. Peace✌️

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do the maintenance just like a normal glass tank except everything is farther underwater haha. It makes more of a mess and is a bit harder to see what your doing but it’s not too bad. Keep it out of direct sunlight for all but about 2 hours a day. You’ll be looking at pea soup if you don’t. Good luck with your ponds!!!

  • @MissJnet

    I want one of these for my goldfish but I’m so scared that the water would pour out of the bottom by accident. What do you have on there to stop that happening? I love my fish. I’ve seen them empty pretty fast too, they’d be dead in minutes.

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These totes are very safe in my opinion. They typically have a heavy duty ball valve at the bottom to drain the contents. Also they are transported on the road and sometimes have hazardous materials in them so the are made to be safe. (Obviously don’t use one that had hazardous materials in it previously) my tote had glue in it before it became a pond. With that being said, you could make some sort of safety latch to keep the ball valve from opening by accident but they are fairly hard to turn and I never had an issue with it. I would definitely get one. It is awesome! Another tip: keep it inside because I had 3, 300 watt heaters that ran almost constantly to keep that much water warm outside. My electricity bill went up $100 a month running that 275 gallon pond. You will also need a I fairly powerful air pump to agitate the surface since the tote is so deep. The farther down the air stone is in the tote, the harder it is for the air to get down there due to the water pressure. You’ll have to move the air stone up from the bottom of your not seeing air come up. Anyways you’ll figure it out but good luck and let me know how it goes! Thanks for watching!!!

      All About DIY Actually, I want it for outside. The goldfish will be fine in freezing temps. I have an above ground pond which is just shy of the recommenced depth for winter to prevent the water from freezing. I bet that they would be ok, but I don’t wanna chance it. The ibc is above the recommended depth so they’ll be fine through winter in there. With a good filter and aeration. Just worried about it draining accidentally.
      Did you know that on Amazon they sell insulation covers to fit this container, really cool :)
      I think that they are completely sealed when they are new, and you have to break the seal to empty, have you heard that?
      I would feel better if I could cap it.
      You don’t think the whole thing would freeze do you?

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Miss Jnet well I suppose it would depend on how cold it gets during the winter in your area. If it’s below freezing for a week or more without a heater I would be worried about it a little. But again you won’t have any trouble with the ball valve opening by accident. It takes some effort to turn the valve. If your still worried about it you can take the valve off the tote and get a plug instead. Make sure to use the appropriate thread sealant when installing it. If you haven’t had a problem with smaller ponds freezing over then you shouldn’t have a problem with a larger volume of water. If I were you, I would get a tote, leave the ball valve on there, and start setting it up. They are super safe.

      All About DIY Yeah, sounds good. I will purchase the insulation cover and I can heat them a little.thanks for for your help. It’s hard to get fast responses on TH-cam :)
      Oh by the way, quickly. What did you use to cut the top off?

    • @allaboutdiy1375

    hey this vid is great thanks. I just got my tote today and starting my build my question is did you have any problems long term with the heaters ? ie meting the plastic or anything like that?

    • @allaboutdiy1375
      @allaboutdiy1375  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had no issues whatsoever. The water keeps the heaters cool so as to not melt the plastic. Think about a new heater and the plastic clips that hold the suction cups. They never have a problem. You will most likely notice a spike in your electricity bill if your keeping it outside. I sure did haha. Good luck with your build it’s a lot of fun. If you have any other questions let me know and I’ll help if I can. Thanks for watching 👍
