As a wine educator I was impressed with the clear, straightforward, unpretentious approach to communicating the basics of tasting. Outstanding presentation.
Hi Jason! Marnie gave a great explanation about wine tasting here! if you're interested in learning even more, check out my 21 Days to Wine TH-cam series! Episode 1 begins with an Intro to Wine Tasting. I'd love to know what you think!
I love smelling the wine a few times before I take my first sip. It’s just amazes me how good some wines smell and how that allows me to enjoy the taste of it.
Hi! Marnie's passion and clarity made this video such a joy to watch! I have tons of fun and informative wine videos on my channel to help you to taste (and smell) like the best of 'em. Check out my 21 Days to Wine series. Episode 2 discusses the semantics of wine smelling and Episode 1 of the series is an 'Introduction to Wine Tasting'-- I'd love to know what you think!
I would advice you to smell one time before swirling the glass to get a first impression : it's called "premier nez". If you swirl it right on, it may happen that you miss some aroma because they get covered by other volatile molecules. What you have on the nose after swirling is called "second nez".
Smelling the aroma is preparing your stomach. I don't know if wine drinkers knows it or it's just their "s.o.p"😁 Ah, it's best if it will in your mouth for atleast 5 seconds if you want really to "taste" without the "chewing effect". Just let it play with your tongue. Why chew?😂
+RamboJRV Actually you are right: it allows more molecules to get from a liquide to a gaz state and then be transported from your mouth to your nose = retro-olfaction.
Hm, actually no. Ethanol tends to be a vasodialator, so it would increase bloodflow to and swelling in the region of your nose. That nasal congestion would tend to make your sense of smell much worse.
I think I have enough years of drinking wine to learn anything new from her, but she did make a really good presentation. The style of her speech really appeals to non English speaking audience, really crispy and clear. Don’t be bothered by the nonsense comments; congrats to a really good video presentation and thanks.
In, my not-so-amateur opinion... Hell yeah. That, necklace would take me inside of 2 hours to make probably less & before anyone gives me a condescending reply?!? I've stayed up until close to 10:00a on just ONE necklace
@@DreamStalker2 I know this is 4 years old but this rubbed me the wrong way haha. No one was asking how long it would take to make this necklace but you just butted in! The irony of you telling others not to be condescending is lost om yourself which is the worsr part! I am sure you probably changed from four years ago but four years ago you was a wierdo.
She has all the qualities of the best Cabernet Sauvignon i have ever had let me start with one: convincing , lovely, amorozo , enchanting , desirable , smart, beautiful, colorful, respectful , easy going , tall, ... and more and more . Lovely !!!!
Thank you for sharing the lesson. Is there a way to understand anything more from the wine via the sense of sound, as well? For example, the loudness of the cork popping?
I still have not remotely gotten down the art of picking out all of the different fruit flavors that are present, but this video taught me a lot in a very short amount of time, and I appreciate it. -Renegade Nic Side note: It was cool that you explained tannin when I had a very strong tannin wine and I immediately realized that dry feeling you were talking about.
To know abt the alcohol, after twirling it as you did at the beginning, just watch over the Edges of the glass.. You will see a transparent trace that fades little by little...as long as this trace takes time to leave it means that the alcohol level is higher.

This is an amazing wine tasting video, highlights the full cycle of aspects to look for- Looks- color , Swirl to enhance the oxygenation, Smell the wine, fully taste subjection by subjection to all taste bud - fruity, oaky, full bodied, sip, savor. Maloba @EAGM Ltd Nairobi
There was a video I thought titled “the difference between voluptuous and lucious” or something along those lines, it was to do with wine tasting, does anyone know the video I’m talking about? I’d like to find it again
We recently opened a bottle of red wine "2004". After poring a few glasses we noticed the bottle itself inside was tainted red with a thin layer. I only took one sip and didn't like it. But others drank it. Did this wine go bad?
I have a rather odd question... How about _staining?_ That is placing a drop of wine on a white cloth and then wiping it or patting it dry with another cloth. Would that say anything distinctive about a wine?
How do I know what I'm sensing in the nose or what I'm tasting? Has every wine-ophile tasted black currant? Or really smelled oak? The only wood that is unmistakable to me is mesquite because I live in Texas and I cook with it. I am humbly asking for help because I am constantly drinking wines that I know to be fantastic and are high-end, but I cannot seem to understand the nuances of the expressions. As I am typing this I am drinking a Sokol Blosser pinot noir and I would really like to understand and appreciate it on a deeper level. Thanks.
Tex Dealer As she said there is a check list of flavors that you have in your mind from past flavors. Its about knowing the smell of oak from an barrel or as you say tasting or smelling black currants. We have training using things such as fruit pruee for example, but there is a lot more than just fruit flavors, tobacco and cut grass, green peas. Its about having a bank of olfactory flavors to refer too. Hope this helps
+Tex Dealer I feel the same way you do. I really want to appreciate wine but its hard for me. My boyfriend is very good at it, and he says theres kits that you can get that will help you appreciate the distinctions between those smells. I found a "Master Wine Aroma Tasting Kit" on Amazon that has tons of different aromas for you to learn. They're expensive, but my bf did something similar in his wine class. If you're passionate about wine, maybe you should start there? (I'm asking for one for christmas)

This is rarely taught but a great tip!
What about if you don’t like the taste? Is it ok to spit?
Your's explanations are a truly delight and your polite way of speak is nothing more them adorable . Great video.
Marnie has a great way of explaining wines. I love her passion for it.
Thanks for this method. I am enjoying my wine a lot better now. Swirling, sniffing and squishing really does make wine more pleasurable.
How about snorting the wine? I bet that amplifies the smell a lot better.
LMFAO
+RamboJRV You can actually try it... First & last time in your life............. ))))) I bet you prefer beer. ;)
+RamboJRV Actually you are right: it allows more molecules to get from a liquide to a gaz state and then be transported from your mouth to your nose = retro-olfaction.
Lets patent a nasal spray bottle for wine
Hm, actually no. Ethanol tends to be a vasodialator, so it would increase bloodflow to and swelling in the region of your nose. That nasal congestion would tend to make your sense of smell much worse.

Marnie is fantastic. Makes wine technique easy to understand without being academic or aloof. Marnie is the Somm of the People. Thank you Marnie!
over 10 years ago hope she's still mastering her trade in wine tasting.
Excelent. What truly helped me understand wine, was actually tasting the juice of the grapes before fermentation. That opened my mind.
Thank you for giving me company..........
I can't help but notice the necklace that looks like a piece of bacon
In, my not-so-amateur opinion... Hell yeah. That, necklace would take me inside of 2 hours to make probably less & before anyone gives me a condescending reply?!? I've stayed up until close to 10:00a on just ONE necklace
Now I can't unsee it.
Hahhaha
thats make sense.... she is sampling a red wine.... red wine goes well with salty meats, so your correct, that is a piece of bacon around her neck
@@DreamStalker2 I know this is 4 years old but this rubbed me the wrong way haha. No one was asking how long it would take to make this necklace but you just butted in! Love how she explains, it’s like poetry 😍
Love your style lady ........
Hi, from the color and their legs around the glass and from your emotion in your face i think it is a great wine. Cheers.
great!! my problem is that when I start tasting, I can't stop lol :)

So much to learn from a brief talk
Wonderful job, I appreciate your knowledge and approach, I have learned much!
