What's your body shape? Why is body Shape SO important? Part 1: Body Shape Master Classe Series.

  • Body Shape is incredibly important in the styling process and in my role as a Personal Stylist for the everyday woman, it's the first thing I assess when I meet a client, so I thought i'd share with you as much knowledge as I can in a series of Body Shape Master Classes.
    Part 1 is overview of the shapes, body scale and the reason why it's so important in the styling process.
    Part 2 onwards will see me dress a different shaped woman each week (not a model, she'll have real lumps and bumps!). You'll get to see how I style every shape possible (apple, pear, strawberry, rectangle and hourglass). And as you'll quickly learn, most women are combinations of shapes and need to consider rules from multiple shapes.
    I really hope you enjoy. As always please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any specific questions.
    For reference, I'm 5ft 3 and a UK size 8-10.
    In the video i'm wearing:
    Zara Basics Knit, Cream, Size medium (they come up small) go.zara/3khWJwa
    Mint Velvet Leather Tan skirt, size 8 (old) but VERY similar: bit.ly/3CWNQPT
    Missoma Lucy William Coin Necklace, £145 bit.ly/3EZNM26

    Most descriptions of body shapes usually talk about "nice legs". I'l like to see something for those of us with knees and legs that are not slim. Love the videos.

    It is amazing how age changes our bodies! I used to be a pear and now I'm an apple! I don't miss the saddle bag thighs, but I sure miss the waist!

      Same here, and it seems that some people can’t believe that shapes change because a lot of videos will say that a “defined waistline never goes away.” 🙄 I used to be a slight hourglass, approximately 8 inches smaller than top and bottom. Now I have gained a lot of weight and seem to have lost my waistline and the difference is about 5 inches. I resemble a rectangle.

    Hmmm. I am an hourglass and I have found that most clothes are designed for people who are bigger on the bottom than the top or the waist is too loose. I always have to buy dresses to fit my bust so that it fits my hips and then take in the waist.

    • @smarcucci79
      @smarcucci79 ปีที่แล้ว

      In fact, the clothes are well designed for horglasses shapes but hourglasses "without chest" because even if fashion bothers us with the 90-60-90 thing, if you look, a 90 of chest corresponds to a size S while the hips will be a XS and the waist a XS or XXS ! And yes, you've probably guessed it, like you, I buy dresses that fit my chest size and have to take back the waist and hips that are too loose...

    • @apokoronvamos8528
      @apokoronvamos8528 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The other problem is that when buying for a large bust in order to get the fit on the front the back is too baggy.

    Such a well thought out comprehensive explanation of body shapes. I found your channel earlier today and was a bit unsure about my shape. Now I know I'm an apple - I carry weight all around my middle, have good legs and a flat bottom. You even mentioned carrying weight around the back bra line which no one has ever mentioned before. Best body shape video I have seen till date. Thank you for distinguishing between a "mommy pooch" and a broad waist and for showing the importance of scale. Overall, thank you for being kind in your description of all body shapes. Thank you!
    P.S. I never knew it was the shoulder I was supposed to be measuring. Many TH-camrs said it was the bust, and because of that suggestion I could never really pinpoint my body shape. My measurement kept suggesting shapes that didn't match my actual appearance. Thanks to your video, I am pretty sure I am a slight pear with a bit of tummy.

    Hi Melissa. I'm a (natural) still red headed 70 year old who loves fashion and lives in skinny jeans - size 8-10 and 5'3''. I think I'm a triangle (88cm bust / 78cm waist / 95cm hips) but since my waist has been given a long lasting hug by too many Mars bars, I've lost my way a bit. Your video is giving me hope (and I'd be a very willing model!)....

I’ve actually got a petite (height wise) lady (but she is a uk size 16) that I’m filming tomorrow but I’m making a note of everyone’s lovely offers and as I move through the shapes I might just take you up on your offer if you’re local!!! The Christmas party edit will be up by the end of the weekend and given that you’re similar height and size to myself you might find that useful. X

    I’m an hourglass. I’m also 5’11. My optimal sizing is a US 6-8. Anything above that begins to be a bit much for me and I get self-conscious and want to scale it back. That leads me to wear clothing that is not flattering to my shape. Looking forward to the series!

    • @staceykersting705

      Also 5'11''....used to be a 5-7 in jeans (US). Now I'm an 8-10. I have broad shoulders, so it's all about where the shoulder seam falls. The wrong shoulder can make me look huge, . and so can a boxy shirt. I'm btwn 145-150 lbs. Def' agree the wrong style ca drown me. I prefer smooth fitting tops, but not too tight...just skimming the body. My go to pieces are jackets/blazers, boot cut jeans, flowy wide leg pants and V-neck T's with a bit of lycra...and mini skirts (about 4-5'' above the knee. I avoid shorter pants...esp flairs, They make my legs look too tiny. Longer lengths make me look much leggier.

      I have the same issue! All dresses and structural tops end up with excess fabric between the bust and shoulder-several inches in many cases. I am 5'4" with a short torso, long legs, large feet (us size 9.5) and a 34 DD chest, so I'm all kinds of out-of-proportion.

    • @Citizen4Change
      @Citizen4Change 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love these comments! Yes, me too!! I would love a video on a short torso and longer legs. I am 5' 2" with a short torso, larger chest, and long legs. Nothing ever fits me LOL. Usually the fabric of dresses or shirts are too long for the space between my chest and shoulder. I mostly carry my weight in my mid-section and chest. I'm size 4 (US) right now. Apparently I am an hourglass but I wouldn't have known because of my short torso and apple weight-carrying tendencies.

    Best video I've watched on body shape and I've watched a lot of them. I'm a hard to fit pear -with a 10 inch difference between waist and butt. 3 inches smaller in the shoulders than the hips. Pants that don't need to be tailored are almost impossible to find....all my life. The low rise stretchy pants (style 15 years ago?) worked for me fit wise but made my legs look shorter-5'5. I'm really looking forward to that real woman pear styling video!

      Numbers alone would suggest rectangle but ask yourself where you put on weight and if it’s your thighs (for example) then you might be a combination of pear and rectangle (most people are combinations of different shapes). Hope that helps

    Super helpful, can’t wait to see your models. I’m a mix of rectangle/apple and tall. I’ve tried the broadening technique but feel massive like a tank. Ditto when I do the same to my bottom. Most videos when dealing with this shape, prescribe the worst fashion cloths in my opinion, horrible waterfall cardigans, trapeze tops, flowing sleeves - all look terrible and out of fashion with today’s trends. So hoping for different ways to style what I feel is the most challenging shape of them all!

    • @mmpersonalstyling
      @mmpersonalstyling  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello! Thank you for your comments, you’re exactly the type of person I’d like to help. ‘Broadening’ is done incredibly subtly and as part of the balancing process and when done correctly I 100% guarantee that you will look and feel smaller all over. The first model is a combination of Apple and strawberry with tiny thin legs so you’ll see the broadening and balancing out techniques used consistently throughout the styling so fingers crossed they give you some inspiration!

    I figure I'm a rectangle. I pack on weight evenly, but I have to say, even though I am slim my legs are still a bit chunkier than what size I wear and sometimes I either find they fit just right, tight, or depending on maker, swimming in them. In the whole "Kibbe realm" I'm considered a Flamboyant Natural because I'm 5'8" and 120. Not dramatic looking enough because I have softness. Cool. Glad I discovered you here! I struggle with finding the right jeans in general. I get the dreaded droopy crotch and everything else is fine (Joe's are great, and Hudson). Cheers.

    Thank you for clarifying how to measure the shoulders! Before this video, I wasn't sure if the shoulders was the whole top part, or from one end of the clavicle to the next. Looks like I am between three different shapes? My shoulder is 34 inches, bust 38, waist 29 (it can be 31 if I'm bloated), and hips 38. I guess I am an hourglass? My shoulders are smaller than my hips though.
    And when my waist is 31 inches from bloating after a big meal, then I am a rectangle? I gain weight in my waist, tummy, and thighs/butt. I don't gain much weight above my waistline. I'm very short-waisted, which is hard to dress. I'm 5'4". I guess I will watch the videos for the hourglass, pear, and rectangle!

    I love this series! Measured myself (41 shoulders, 39 bust, 30 waist 39 hips) so think I'm an hourglass? But I'm short (5' 2") and feel like I look pudgy and dumpy. Although I am petite, petite sizes rarely fit correctly. I'm not sure why-- maybe I'm disproportionately long in the torso. Will you be doing a styling video for short hourglass type? There are two kinds of hourglass - the X shape and the 8 shape. I'm an 8 shape, there are things that are flattering to one type and not the other!

    • @mmpersonalstyling
      @mmpersonalstyling  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A figure of 8 is basically an hourglass with a higher hip and tummy which basically means a combination of apple and hourglass. Which is exactly my point that people are combinations and therefore need to observe the rules from different shapes. Truthfully there’s 100’s of different shapes but that’s too complicated a message for people to identify with so having done this job for many many years this is the method of identification that works for most. I’m glad you’ve found what works for you. Thanks for watching.

    I haven’t heard my body shape? I am a CELLO, slightly bigger on the bottom than the top, so curvy but not excessive, flat bottom and very slim ankles. I sort of follow some of the rules of a pear, ie accentuate the top, but I have a bigger bust and slimmer hips and legs.

    • @mmpersonalstyling
      @mmpersonalstyling  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most ladies are a combination of shapes but rather than trying to pigeonhole yourself into one of those shapes, think more about how to balance your shape out by putting it back into an hourglass figure with the use of clothes. So if you’re curvier on the bottom and this is your widest part you’d start by widening your shoulder areas to the same width. Trust me, it works!

    I'm definitely going to watch the next video
    Because I was 36.5 shoulder, 26 waist and 36 hips which made me thought that I was strawberry because of the .5😂 but now I see that 10 in difference in the waist from shoulders & hips is considered hourglass but then I gain weight during this months and what I see bigger is my belly and my booty that now are 28 and 38 makes me think I'm apple/pear BUT (again) when I see myself in the mirror I see a rectangle body shape. Is anyone following it?😐😂

  • @taylormacdowell
    @taylormacdowell 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have watched and rewatched this series and am still having difficulty defining my shape. Shoulders = Waist. Bust = Waist + 3. Hips = Waist + 5. Rectangle? Triangle? You make it sound so simple. So why am I having such trouble?

    • @mmpersonalstyling
      @mmpersonalstyling  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry you’re having trouble still. You just need to take 3 measurements (shoulders, waist and hips) and a 4th measurement of your bust if you feel like your bust interferes with your dressing (ie they’re big!). Then just look at which one of the measurements is biggest! If it’s the shoulders or bust then you’re a strawberry. If it’s the waist you’re an apple etc. etc. If they’re all similar you’re a rectangle. That all said, the easiest method when things aren’t overly clear is to ask yourself ‘if I put on weight, where does it go’ and there’s your answer. At the end of the day styling is just about balance, so you’re just trying to create the balance like an hourglass. So for me (for example) my bottom and thighs are the biggest part so to balance them out I have to broaden my shoulders. I really hope that helps but if not then I do 1:1 styling sessions if that would be of any interest to you x
