Worked at a tech call center, spent all week logging into and fixing a customer's router by writing scripts, etc. Boss calls me into his office. I think to congratulate me. Nope, he yells at me for taking too long and I'm not supposed to fix it, just log it and pass along to the repair team. I get back to my desk, call the next customer and immediately start getting yelled at for something someone else did. I hung up on them, put my head in my hands shaking for 15 minutes or so, packed up my stuff and walked out, never looking back. I now drive a truck 70-80 hrs/wk, make 3-4 times as much and WAY happier.

Not if you are in the US. Most jobs are at-will jobs here, so being fired for quitting has no legal protection, and they can fire you right away if they so choose, and you can't do anything about.

Cleaning for a 24hour gym, cleaned 5 nights a week. Would get a call every Tuesday being accused of not doing my job properly... when my last shift is a Saturday. I had to start taking photos proving I was doing my work as the managers couldn't figure out that between midnight and 8am when staff come in, facilities are obviously being used. Final straw was actually this week, Tuesday boss called and told me he went in Friday night and the gym was a state, told him this is bs as he has the photos showing the work id done and why didn't he say so Saturday if that was the case? Asked him when exactly he went in and turns out he was lying as the time he said I was still in the gym. Told him as such and called him out for lying, also turns out he hadn't had staff cleaning on a Sunday and Monday and was basically letting me take the fall for his failings. I just said "yknow what? I'm out. You can pick my fob up from the gym as I'm dropping it off and not coming back. Good luck finding a replacement tonight" and hung up. Walked into the gym, dropped the keys into the managers hand and was like "im out". When they clocked what was happening they panicked and were telling me it was no big deal and we can move past it. I laughed and said "not a chance" and explained exactly why I was done. Left them standing there wondering how they were going to get a cleaner.
It may seem really simple and stupid but I take a lot of pride in my cleaning and had a second job anyway, I was only staying as a favour as I knew they didn't have the staff to replace me. I didn't need the job and definitely didn't need the abuse

I Feel this. At mu current job which is a shitty restaurant gig I went in early and was in a good mood. So I did a bunch of cleaning for the girls who were on the shift before me to lighten the load. I proceed to clean counters, and the machines when my manager screams at me and starts to chastise me for not wearing a headset. I explain I wasn't on the clock and had just cleaned a bunch for her and her response was to roll her eyes and say mhmm and walk away. She the has the gall to talk to me later and wonder how she can't keep people.

Finally quit after 3 months when they told us we weren't getting any holidays off, and that anyone who wasn't at work on those holidays were as good as fired. 3/4 of the plant, including myself, quit.

Quit my job without thinking when my manager verbally berated me for being 2 mins "late" to my shift. I was scheduled for 6:30am, and got there at 6:28am after a perfect week of showing up 15 min before scheduled start. I had the time to take my bag off and put my work shoes on and check in. Yet she screamed at me for being "late" then got the assistant manager to join in. After telling me to just go home for the day as punishment, I told them to take the rest if my shifts and shove it

Yet theres me working hard attending college wanting sunday off for homework manager goes " nah its based off of senority ". Would pull that line regularly anytime she cut my hours for asking if i could get sunday off for homework yet she gave it to her employees cause she can. One time she said "i put the schedule into the computer and the computer makes the schedule" when complaining about hours. And much much more THANK GOD. I do not work there anymore.

Then I found out only my boss and one person spoke English and my Spanish is bad. No one cleaned the deli slicer after using it. They had the day's trash blocking one of the only exits.

I work at a security company in 2016 from June to December. I’m from Chicago, so a lot of events were happening from summer into winter. I took notice that the higher up and full guards treated us part timers like we were jokes, never kept track of our breaks, and were never direct with what they wanted you to do. Also, how getting hours would work was a pain in the ass. The company will send out a text for a specific location/event and you would have to reply if you can work it or not. I always replied because they gave me the worse hours imaginable. Plus, the pay period was biweekly, so imagine working 4 hours and waiting 2 weeks for 40 bucks. And if there was a holiday the pay week, then you have to wait 3 weeks. I left my last event on Christmas Eve of 2016 and never came back.
Now that I have you up to speed, here’s why I quit that shitshow of a company. I was working a bears game that Christmas Eve and the company had a strict rule on what type of clothing to wear. I had a bulls hat on and I was gonna take it off inside the stadium because it was freezing outside. As I walked, I heard yell until I turned around to see a higher up gesture me to take my hat off. I said “ok when I get inside”. I took two steps and was met with more yells. I replied “I just told you I was gonna take it off inside. Do you not feel the cold out here?” I took one more step and one grabbed my shoulder and said take the hat off as if he was gonna get physical if I didn’t. I smacked his hand off me, took the hat off, spit on the ground next to him, and proceeded to walk in the building. At the end of my shift, I grabbed my stuff and never looked back.
TMTR: Security company as a shitshow with power drunk higher ups. They treated no one with respect and nearly got physical with me on the last day.

Just recently did this. And I honestly hope my boss is watching and reading the comments. I kept being promised things like being made trainer, getting a raise, then a whole new position then he "forgot" that he promised all these things and kept giving them to his FRIEND who was hired way after I was. Then all of the sudden I was getting complaints of how I wasn't doing my job correctly, and he even forgot he promised me a day off when my MIL was in town and called me a different position in the company that what I was and demanded I come into work on the day off he gave me. Luckily I have a new job. I blocked everyone's numbers and I haven't looked back, this was all just from Sunday that I quit.

My last job fired my dad after nearly 30 yrs of service just because they didn’t want to admit fault that they didn’t listen to a white man. Long story short: it’s a casino, they are racist there, an employee stole nearly $500,000, blamed my dad instead of admitting they didn’t listen to him and if they did they would have caught the theft at the very beginning. Tho I had to put in my 2 weeks because I had nearly 200 hrs of PTO saved but others immediately quit or put their notices in. Now the casino is struggling and continues being dumbasses causing more ppl to leave.😂

When I had shingles, it wasn't an itch, it felt more like I'd been run over by an NFL linebacker. Pain meds only helped a bit--2 hydrocodone every six hours, and you know that they don't last six hours--five, maybe. You wind up pacing back and forth in the kitchen at 3 a.m. waiting until 4 a.m. rolls around so that you can take your next dose of pain meds. Not fun.

My parents got divorced when I was 4 years old. Because of this my holidays were packed. Thanksgiving with Mom meant Christmas with Dad, etc. In high school I started working at a movie theater. I know they are open on holidays. My mother didn’t. When I told her that I had to work at least one of the holidays my mother brought me in with a note saying I quit. The manager really needed people, so he made an agreement with her that I didn’t have to work holidays. I continued working. You can guess what happened. I began that job right around Halloween. Two weeks later the schedule came out and I was on Wednesday night, all day Thanksgiving, and all day Black Friday. I was supposed to be with my Dad - who lived a two hour drive away. My mother called the manager, who told her that it was out of his hands no matter what he had agreed to. She called his boss. My father called his boss. Nothing. I was about to quit when my Dad had an idea. I went to work the Wednesday night. After the shift my dad showed up and said (in front of the manager) that we had to go because we were driving 5 hours to my grandmother’s place upstate. The manager started to yell. You don’t yell at me in front of my dad if I haven’t done anything wrong. My dad got really quiet, told me to change out of my uniform and come back. While I was in the bathroom I heard my manager yelling and then it abruptly stopped. I came out, saw the manager’s face go white, and he wouldn’t look at me. My dad quietly said “you just quit”. I nodded and left with dad. 20 years later Dad still won’t tell me what he said. I think there’s a good chance he could have been arrested, so I dropped it. I really want to know.

Try this one on for size: working as a cashier at a convenience store (soul sucking job already). Was held up at gunpoint one night for the register contents. Yes, I had been dropping 20s in the safe. But I had "too many" 10s in the register and got chewed out for that. Then they decided that it must be an "inside job" (that I was in cahoots with the guy who stuck a loaded revolver in front of my nose). Luckily for me this dude had also knocked over a place 30 miles up the road. So the police did not see me as a suspect, but the stinking manager and her district manager treated me like dirt and blamed me for a $154 robbery. I was stressed and furious over the incident already, but far from any sympathy/commiseration/counseling, I was told to NOT associate with the other employees and to not talk to them about the incident in any way. So I told the manager that I was DONE. I needed the money, badly, in a bad economy but my mental health was at stake. I swore that day that I'd never be that desperate again, and moved away from that area nearly 30 years ago. Been doing well the past 25.

Being already exhausted (since this was at the end of the day), and having literally just learned this technique less than five minutes ago, I get about 75% to 80% of the way done by the time the boss gets back.

12:41 just to play Devil's Advocate, getting a gluten-free order wrong is a pretty big deal considering if they did it because if they had celiacs disease, the restaurant could get in a lot of trouble. It doesn't really justify the extent of the yelling, and after they realize that it wasn't that big a deal the owner probably should have come down, but the initial anger is completely Justified imo. That's a pretty big mess up.

I was coming to see if anyone had said this. Absolutely agree, allergies/intolerances aren't something you can just "forget to note", that could get the whole place shut down and anyone who prepared the food landed with a criminal record, not to mention cause severe illness or death of the diner. Also just because some people claim to be gluten intolerant when they haven't been professionally diagnosed as such, it doesn't mean you can just ignore it when someone tells you they need their food to be gluten-free. (This is something waiters/servers should be trained on, I get the feeling a lot of people are working part-time jobs and not aware of the seriousness of food allergies/intolerances, which is really on the owner/manager if so.)

I have an diverticulitis, an intestinal thing where your intestines have little pockets that can get inflamed and infected, and abscess it's very dangerous and could kill me if I don't get a flair up looked at when Im symptomatic. The symptoms fucking suck, tons of lower abdominal pain that's unbreable, fevers and throwing up. Well I worked at a Dollar General a few months ago as a manager, I woke up on a Monday feeling like I might be starting to have a flair up because I was in some pain that morning, no vomiting yet but I felt like it, so I go into work anyway cause I needed to work. Well I get over half way through my closing shift and have to call my store manager. I was throwing up off and on all shift in so much pain I couldn't breathe, to see if we could close early so I could go to the ER, she finally let me know 15 minutes before closing but said I still had to do all the closing duties cause she was an hour and half away at her boyfriends, but not to worry about it being right because she'd figure it out in the morning. So I did all the closing stuff, locked the store at almost 11, and drove to the closest ER. Didn't get home till 3 am so I didn't bother texting her what the Dr said. I texted her when I woke back up from the pain killer they gave me and told her. She texted me back hours later saying that since I get sick a lot I need to think about stepping down as a manager, that she needs someone more dependable. That she wouldn't cut my pay, the 8.75$ an hour I was getting as a manager btw, but I would take a cut in my hours because we had three other cashier's I already couldn't live off the pay I was getting. I had come in covered for people pulled countless doubles and came in sick so many times when I should have been in bed resting. I didn't text her back but when I went back to work Friday I talked to her and she was admit about me stepping down. I told her "Sorry but I worked to hard to be manager, and I'm not stepping down, I'm not taking a pay cut..." But then she said she wasn't cutting my pay I said "but my hours will get cut. I can't make it already there's no way I can make it with an hours cut. I feel like I'm being punished for having something I can't control when you haven't asked the other manager who called out a lot recently because she is pregnant and having problems early on to step down. So this is my last shift." She told me she wouldn't and couldn't give me a good recommendation because I quit, I said "that's fine At three when I leave I won't be back." I worked my opening shift told that manager who I was actually friends with bye and left. Never looked back. I had another job by Monday. I don't regret it at all. Dollar general is toxic as hell place to work for. They demand so much of so little staff, for shitty pay, if anyone ever thinks about that as a job when you have other options DO NOT!

Got hired by a guy offering me a very decent pay for a part-time job, which was basically doing absolutely nothing all afternoon while listening to him swearing loudly and saying all kinds of misogynistic and just plain gross things the whole time (I sound like a prude, I'm not, let's just say a bunch of sailors would feel embarrassed around him). He completely ignored and looked down on me and treated his business partner like shit. He would even take work trips and not let me know, locking me out of the office on a rainy, cold day (more than once), and when I got back home, he called me yelling and swearing that I wasn't being paid for skipping. I just stayed around for the pay, really. Until one Friday, around the time to leave, he stopped me at the door by calling me like you would call a farm animal; I turned around, already super aggravated by this, and then he said "won't you clean up the restroom?". The restroom was absolutely disgusting, all peed over, smelled like death and he had turned down a professional cleaner that afternoon, saying he didn't need that. I told him to fuck off and never looked back.

I had a whole post typed out and TH-cam ate it. So here's the TL;DR:
Call Center for general public IT. The company kept requiring impossible metrics and would roadblock us from reaching them. They would break or take away our tools, making the job unnecessarily harder. Unless you were fucking Call Center Superman, you were "underperforming" and would be denied bonuses and department changes. Our department would be forced to take on the responsibilities of other departments when they got shut down and we never received proper training. And on a personal level, my team leader had been training me to take her place, but when she left, the company blocked the move and put in some inexperienced brown-noser. He was so bad at running the team, several employees (myself included) quit. I didn't have a backup plan, I just wanted out.
There's a positive end to the story, though. Wound up finding a job within the week. Held it for a few years before COVID shut the world down.

So when I'm counting the safe, writing the schedule, anything that has to do with writing things down, I'm inevitably slower because, you know, I'm not used to writing with my left hand. My manager told me I needed to move faster because they wouldn't pay me for the time it was taking me to do my after shift duties. any alleged damage to a car (customer or not) cannot be taken from your pay, that is a separate civil matter that the car owner (or their insurance) will have to with you personally.

Worked at wal mart for about 2 months kept getting rushed to finish truck so I can help stock, one day my boss came into the meat freezer and wanted to berade me for not finishing on the time he gave me so I could help the meat department stock shelf's. I told him that I get paid by the hour and my job title was unloader not stocker. He decided to punish me by not having anyone unload trucks on my days off and back me up then come and whine about how there was 3 days worth of back stock and I was still going the same pace. Final straw was when I was unloading the truck and needed a dolly I was told to just take one from the main floor. 2 minutes later I have an employee curse me out for taking his dolly, instead of beating his ass I went to the manager who told me he had more important things to do wich I replied with: you certainly do, you have 3 days worth of back stock in the truck to label and rotate douces. Fuck Walmart.

In 2012 on the hottest day of the year in Melbourne Australia (46°celcius 114.8°f) I as asked as waitstaff to wear a green and gold clown wig (unofficial national colours) an cover my face in zinc face paint to celebrate Australia Day. This was in the middle of the city with nothing but concrete heat island around me while in the peak rush serving burgers to thankless suited arseholes who acted like being on the other side of the counter meant I was basically their temporary slave. I cracked it when someone said the ice tasted wrong and threw their water at me when I had been made to work through my break and not allowed to get water. Store had no aircon and most people were outside in the laneway. I went straight to the manager quit on spot in front of customers, he said "how can you do this to me!", I left, got train home and went and bought a slab of beer and played guitar drunk all night. Two weeks later I had better work for more pay in an air conditioned call centre. Fuckem.

I'm so petty it didn't even take much; my boss left the job site under the management of the military liaison officer who had me stop doing my job and spend half a day building a wooden replica of our Bobcat bucket.
I finished it, equipped it onto the Bobcat's forklift and dropped it off inside the garbage bin on my way to my car, left the keys in the Bobcat (it was still on-site) and never went back.
Reflecting back: my bosses deserved better, but it was such a big-dick power move that I don't regret it.

Secondly I like hpw in a lot of these stories the boss acts like a total asshole and them tries to tell the person who quits that they "aren't allowed to" as if the person quitting is gonna be like, *sigh* You're right, I guess im just gonna go back to taking your abuse. The only job I ever quit on the spot was working at a Starbucks in an airport. I was just tired of being the opener, wanted to quit because upper management kept misgendering me despite me gently reminding the guy every day, and we were also so understaffed that often it was only me and one other person working. I texted my boss asking for his email so I could officially send a formal notice, give proper two weeks and all that, and he said it was just his first and last name, but I didn't know his last name so I immediately asked him to just give me his email address. He did not for over 4 hours, so I said fuck it and just texted him that I quit effective immediately. They tried to guilt me into staying for two weeks and that just made me dig my heels in, since I realized these were not people I wanted to work for even a second longer.
All told nothing was seriously wrong with the place, things were up to code and done well, I was just treated poorly and knew I deserved better. Ended up getting a job at a Dunkin Donuts and was one of their star employees, even my manager there was always happy to see me because my being there made the whole operation run better.

I worked at menards. They were mandating mask due to covid. The amount of times I've had to argue with adult babies over mask was emotionally exhausting. At one point I literally didn't even go out of my way to tell people to wear a mask who weren't talking to me. I only told them to if they came up and talked to me. The last straw was when both these incidents literally happened in the same day:
First, there was a guy looking at sockets who didn't have a mask on. My boss told me to tell him to put it on. He refused and I told him if he didn't he'd have to leave. He threw a socket at me and it hit me in the temple. I was outraged and told the guy "you're lucky I'm on the clock." My manager told him to leave or he'd call the police. He left thankfully.
Finally, this was it. A guy wasn't wearing a mask and I told him he had to wear a mask. He straight up said I'm not doing that. I told him if he didn't I would go get my manger. Went and got my manager. He threatened us and said "you know I carry?" I said "You wouldn't dare." He put his hand on his hip and almost pulled it out. I tackled him and put him in a chokehold till the cops came after my manger called. After they arrested the guy I slammed my vest on the ground and told my manager "This is not worth $12 an hr. I'm done." Walked out and never went back.
