    I’ve had this lens about a year and using mainly for wildlife. I’ve not really been using it much lately, mainly due to getting some blurry images but thankfully I’ve started using Aperture Priority more lately instead of manual so I’ll give it a go with this lens.

    I went ahead and bought one. On my K20D, which has camera based image stabilisation, it is surprisingly sharp at 300mm. I’ve got some great shots of full frame birds from 30 feet away and a few reasonable hand held moon shots. Very impressed for the price as I got mine ‘as new’ for £75 on eBay boxed. Great fun addition to my lenses. Thanks again for the tutorial.

    I have this lens with the nikon d5300 and take shots of demonstrations, protest marches in central London, UK. I do not have time to mess around with changing setting after setting but, as long as the light is good 1/320 1/400 and 1/500 shutter speeds in S mode gets me some good shots. If the light is getting darker up the ISO to 400 and above. Whatever is best before noise appears in your shots. Do not forget to set Metering, Focus mode and AF-area mode to your situation as these do affect how long it takes you to focus when hand held.

    I own an earlier model of this lens. It is very astigmatic and soft past 135mm, unless you're shooting macro. Also suffers from "soap bubble" bokeh that can make the background appear very "busy" if you're not careful. As a rule, I stay in the 70-135 range if focusing far away. Not sure if the newer model in this video fixes these issues.

    I just traded a Nikon (Nikkor) 70 -300 AF D lens I bought at a thrift store for $15 for a Sigma 70 -300 AF DG lens with macro.. Was that a good trade?
    Also, I watched this vidoe on Macro Photography from B&H and basically the guy said that there is really no macro, it's a gimmick and basically all you're really getting is a zoom function, is that correct? Thanks a bunch.. Stop in and see you guys when I'm in the area...

    Good advice, thanks for uploading this.
    I've been testing a Sigma 28 to 300mm DG (no stabilisation) with my Canon 200D and was about to either sell it or throw it in the trash because every shot was slightly blurred at the top end but after watching this video I now realise I should have put camera in shutter priority - which ironically I've been doing with my ancient Helios 44-2 and 28mm lenses but I then put the camera in auto for the Sigma lens thinking because it was modern that it was going to do everything. Now I know.

      @DigitalGojaUSA  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @DigitalGojaUSA  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@charlesshaw9090 At 300mm the Pentax will be better but Sigma is better at the lower zoom range. Any lens up to f/1.8 would be great but they usually cost a lot.

    Hi Izzy, love this tutorial. Had my Sigma 70-300m less than 24 hours so I'm still in the process of getting used to it. I've tried a couple of macro shot that hasn't come out too bad for a complete novice. But in a couple of weeks, I'm heading up the Lake District, this venue has some stunning scenery. What I would like to know is what would be the best setting for landscapes when using this lens? I have a Nikon D3300.

    • @DigitalGojaUSA
      @DigitalGojaUSA  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, we hope that you will enjoy this lens, for the best shots of the scenery we recommend that you experiment with the aperture, a higher aperture, like 10 or higher should give you the best results.

    Can you explain what you meant by "always remember to have a shutter speed equal or faster than the millimeter you're working with." 2:43
    Does that mean, for example, if you have a 200mm lens, the shutter speed should be at least 1/200s? 300mm = 1/300s shutter, 85mm = 1/85s shutter, so on and so forth. Do I have that correct?

    • @DigitalGojaUSA

      @DigitalGojaUSA  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fixon3091 We would recommend shooting in either full manual or shutter priority. With a lens like the 70-300 you would want select a shutter speed no slower than 1 / the focal length of your lens to make sure that you do get image blur from camera shake. So I would recommend using a shutter speed of at least 1/300th of a second. Also, start at an ISO from 1600-6400. In addition set your AF to AF servo and your drive mode to continuous.

    I am planning to order NIKON D5300 18-55MM + 70-300 MM..
    And i could see from the tutorial that either one of the lens is used at a given point of time. But i was under impression that we could attach 70-300 on top of 18-55 mm to extend its scope..
    So instead of getting the both the lens , i could go for D5300 only body + 70-300 lens as i wouldnt need 18-55 as thi sis of more capacity ?

    • @DigitalGojaUSA
      @DigitalGojaUSA  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @klyferwei2012 Since the lens doesn't feature image stabilization, we would recommend setting the shutter speed to at least 1/focal length being used. In your case, if you are using the lens on a camera with an aps-c sized sensor, you will have to multiply the focal length by 1.5X. For example, if you use your lens at 300 mm, set your shutter speed to around 1/500 to make sure you you don't introduce camera shake (Canon aps-c camera is 1.6x | 300 mm x 1.6 = 480 mm). Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    • @DigitalGojaUSA
      @DigitalGojaUSA  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome. The easiest route might be to use either a monopod or tripod to provide you with added support. If you feel comfortable changing the mode dial on your camera, switch it into S or Shutter Priority mode. This gives you the ability to choose a fast enough shutter speed to reduce camera shake. You can also try using the Sports scene mode. This would be more of an automated function that prioritizes a fast shutter speed.

    • @DigitalGojaUSA
      @DigitalGojaUSA  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello CK and Mr SHOT. Both are great affordable telephoto lenses. The Sigma will pull the subject in a bit more at 300mm and provides you with some macro capabilities. On the other hand, the Canon lens will be smaller in size, have image stabilization, and faster autofocus.
