    About Us.
    Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, being designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
    We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Carmarthenshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
    Having had a highly successful smallholding in Monmouthshire, we hope to recreate the abundance at our new home. There will be a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
    We keep a few sheep and Aylesbury ducks.

      Thanks so much! 😊 The veg garden certainly feels like it's got the main shape sorted out and now it needs time to mature (and lots of wood chips on the paths).

    Hi Liz, great video. Yes it's always satisfying to see white cabbage moths on the outside of the nets, not the inside! Hoping to get out in the garden tomorrow, you've inspired me.

    I've just done something like that for the first time: seeded late string beans in between already maturing garlic. My thinking was that in the beginning, little seedlings would be shaded by taller plants. And when I pull out fully grown garlic, string beans will have a lot of space to grow.
    You made me think about what else could I do in this style. Thank you!

    Great video, Liz. We’re having a heatwave here in my area. The heat index was 109. However, I’m growing southern peas and okra and they are thriving. Because of all your great advice I had planted bush green beans under the okra and they are doing great.
    So now I’m looking around and deciding on what else I can plant under the okra.

    Have you found that laying the mypex mulch between your beds has deterred slugs? And how did you get it to lie so flat?

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, but it does give the slugs a nice smooth path to my veggies! It's flat because I leveled the ground by walking and heeling the lumps down and then I pinned the membrane on one side and pulled it tight before pinning on the other side.

    If you put the netting over the plants, how do the bees get to pollinate the flowers? (I'm new to most of this.) When you keep replanting in the same bed, how do you replenish the nutrients in the soil? What do you use for that?

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This soft butterfly netting keeps out butterflies and larger creatures, but bees and smaller insects can happily get through the mesh. I hva several videos about replenishing nutrients and what I do at the end of the season.

    • @LizZorab

      Yes, the moth's caterpillar is green, almost exactly the same colour as the cabbage stem, so they are really hard to spot.

    Great advice Liz thanks. I’ve just put 2 beds of sweetcorn in and was wondering about my leeks so may try them with the sweetcorn. How do you find the straw? I have had it on my raised beds this year and found that it’s encouraging the slugs and snails. I got 7 double handfuls out the other day when I was on the plot. No wonder my cabbages keep disappearing!! I’ve taken it off for now but do like it as a mulch

    • @LizZorab
      @LizZorab  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I stopped using straw as a mulch a few years ago because of slugs and also because it wasn't organic straw, so I was worried about what chemical residues were in or on it.

    • @christiegrows2022
      @christiegrows2022 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LizZorab yes I did think about that after. I had spread it over a bed of 20 asparagus plants my new bed. Only 3 fronds have come up. I’m not sure if that’s normal for the first year or the straw has something to do with it 😩

    Liz, what medium do you use in your seed starting pots? I wasn't happy with the seed starting mix I bought, and I don't want to spending money on it anyway. I find I'm always trying to start from seed direct in the garden, to avoid filling pots, which means everything is always late.
