Just preempting some questions/comments I know I’ll get. I am incredibly lucky to still be able to work from home and I know there’s many people who are struggling right now. Just wanted to give some insight into how science has been affected for those interested. 1) *Why aren’t you, as a scientist, helping out with COVID-19 research?* Because I’m not an infectious disease expert. If I applied my stats and modelling skills to a situation where I don’t have the background knowledge I would cause more harm than good. I’d be in the way. I’m leaving this to the experts. 2) *Why are we funding astrophysics research when we should be funding vaccine research?* A lot of science funding is sorted out months or even years in advance. All science contributes to the advancement of society - whether image analysis techniques, data transfer or pushing forward technology. It’ll all circle back in the end. 3) Sam and I have been together since high school 4) I know my home desk set up is terrible. I’m working on getting a new chair, monitor, keyboard and mouse through the university. But obviously everyone is in the same boat so it’s a bit slow going! I don’t want to buy it myself upfront and then find they can’t reimburse me for something
Ad 2) There are even more reasons. Breaking long collected time series will have effects which will not be reparable. Stopping experiments which have already invested a lot of money in preparation would be pure waste. Also sacking scientists and paying them the unemployment dole instead of the not really lavish salaries would also be a waste considering that they also teach students. And finally, spending billions on saving companies which had previously gave out billions to their shareholders in stock buyouts while destroying science because of stinginess would be a very bad investment in our common future.
You are an inspiration for young people to get into STEM fields. You are brilliant and charming and you speak about your "boring" routine with passion. Thank you for all you do in the name of science. There should be an award in your name given to young kids who choose a path in astronomy. Take care!
@Dr. Becky A few months ago I recommended you as an exemplar for STEM in the Women's Staff Network Group where I work. Your videos are a great way of showing how exciting and interesting a career in STEM can be. :)
ikr, this is so much better than my life in every way 😬

There is NOTHING "boring" about her routine in the slightest. She gets to explore the infinite cosmos _for a living!_ Cosmos that, mind you, absolutely dwarf our existence in every way. Other people may make more money (not sure, not going to ask), but they deal with mundanities of making a manager happy who makes their boss happy and so on. Life is short and if you only do things for money your whole life, you are taking up to _15 years_ off your life just from that...so it better be something you love with great passion! Kudos to you, Becky! I'm 30 years old and starting my Ph.D. with a focus on Computational Astrophysics in the fall! Money doesn't go with you when you die, live every moment with liveliness and love of the process!
i can't believe i stumbled on this video as an undergraduate astrophysicist student and never realised this is the content i wanted and needed ! also shocked me to see my lancaster lecturer in the middle of this video !! thank-you so much for giving this insight into your life and inspiring me to keep working and looking at a future in this field !! x
Sadly, I can't say I have had a week as intense as this, but on my busiest college weeks, I probably reached about 80% of this. I have no idea where that drive has went, because these days I feel like I do nothing again. I suppose that's half the fight; finding the drive when you don't have grade deadlines or work deadlines. Finding the passion, etc. She has the passion I wish I had, and I think that is the fundamental difference between her right now, with this schedule - and people like us. It's a quality definitely worth commending.
So, this girl is a scientist, knows how to code, has editing skills, is a creative cook and knows how to fix things around the house. I'm so impressed right now
You're such an inspiration! I also want to be an astrophysicist! Or maybe an exoplanet researcher or planetary scientist.. I'm not certain since I'm still a sophomore in highschool, but I know to myself that I love Astronomy ♡ Btw, you're so VERY productive! Like how could you have so much time in a day! Wish I could manage my time well like yours.
I admire this girl so much. It's so refreshing to see someone work with such passion and determination. It really shines a light on my own life. I have a college degree that I don't even like, I work for a company that I truly loathe and the pandemic has not really helped the job market. But it's nice to see someone out there that got life figured out
Awesome videos. I’m in IT and watched your videos in the background while working. It’s a very entertaining way of letting those of us who aren’t in your field know what’s going on at the forefront without overloading on the details. Let editing Becky know her struggles are appreciated :)
You're so productive haha. I'd be starting my day at 10 and ending it at 4. Please don't stop publishing these videos though. They provide such a good insight towards this world we don't really have access to after leaving college. Although I bet editing Becky is looking forward towards retirement!
I really admire your devotion to science. I'd really love to study Astrophysics at university but I didn't take the right courses while at school, and I have always struggled with Mathematics.
You canrecover from you math struggles by restudying the things you dont understand from zero ! And maybe if you really wanna get in this field , some universities rely on their own acceptance test . Good luck!
So glad I found this channel! I'm an Italian astronomy major (hopefully soon-to-be astrophysics major), and I really needed this kind of insight into the life of an actual astrophysicist. Can't wait to start working on some really cool science like you do!
Honestly, I was so freaked out about what to do (my career choice is astrophysics but I got a little intimidated with the amount of stuff you have to get through) but I'm so glad I discovered this channel, thank you so much Dr. Becky!
I live in the SanJuan islands in the Northwestern corner of Washington St. Its incredibly clean and green here with a coastline that is golden-grey and colorfully rocky. The local deer come and go like accepted house hold dogs that roam their neighborhood freely. The island fox will eat from your hand and there are no predators that would alarm any human. The tumultuous weather if often interrupted by beautiful warm blue skies. Rarely to we see freezing temperatures in the winter but we have all 4 truly beautiful seasons. Never have I witnessed such s serine time on the island as I am witnessing now. My perception of my world is literally the making of it. But then Covid 19 has also changed our way of living world wide many here are struggling. Your content, You’ are a great addition to us all because it is just sensible, positive input simply explained by a beautiful person. Thank you and please keep it coming 😊
Hey Becky :) I don't know if you are going to see this comment, but I just wanted to say thank you. Interesstingly, you were one of the reasons why I wanted to study at a university. I don`t study anything related to space, but I am in my second year of medicine. Sometimes, when I don't feel like studying, I stumble over your videos and start to get motivated. I am really in love with your 'day in a life' type videos. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Germany :)
I don’t understand how, being that you’re very ‘normal’, you can carry out and understand all that technical stuff that you do. Amazing! Keep it up Becks. 😊
Thank you so much for posting this video! Im doing my bachelor degree in astrophyisics and i cant do my best while im home. You are such an inspiration for me ;) Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
Thank you for uploading these videos. I am a research scholar (not in the astrophysics field). Your videos help me in clearing my mind and focusing on my research work.. Like the way you have a club meeting every day with your colleagues about recent advances and you know the general discussion on who is doing what. I don't get to do that as people I know are doing research on very different topics.. so by watching your enthusiasm and discussions I feel motivated. Also, the concept of black holes and formation of stars always fascinated me since I was a kid. Best of luck to you with your research.
And to think, all I did today was to play with & home school my 5 yr old granddaughter, which though very unscientific, is equally important. Love your videos.
she will cherish this forever sir I live in a joint family with my grandfather and my parents and trust me my grandfather is my stress buster even at the age of 19 I love listening to his tales almost every evening, grandparents are the best!! we are blessed to have them!
Dr. Becky, you are such an inspiration. I've grown sick of the breakfasts I've been eating regularly for the past few months but now I will start incorporating avocado toast. Thank you.
I learned a trick years ago for proofreading. It's best explained as if the document is printed on paper: Rotate through 180 degrees the stack of pages (or just the one if that's all there is) so that the first word is located at the bottom right instead of the upper left. Now, read out loud from bottom to top and right to left - in the original order. It won't be smooth but someone listening will hear the words in the right order. The point is that you'll be reading word-by-word instead of whole sentences and your brain will work harder being forced to pay closer attention to the text instead of just gliding across the sentences. You'll spot "precious" right away. You've taught me a lot... I hope I've helped a bit in return.
Oh, Dr., we need to talk about that chair! If I lived in England I would bring you one of the many office chair we have laying about. My back hurts just from *watching* you sit in that chair.
@Dr. Becky: An optometrist once told me, when reading something close up (such as a book or laptop), you want to give your eyes a break every once in awhile by focusing far away. I recommend that you do not sit (so close) facing the wall because your eyes as a muscle will not have the opportunity to relax (de-focus). Also, feng shui says to sit with your back to the wall; to ensure no foes can sneak up behind you / give you a sense of security. Hopefully your room is big enough to move furniture around. (truly enjoying your videos! Thanks for all your effort!)
I felt like that all through my School years and into my mid 30’s. I went back to College for evening classes in 2003 and now I’m an electrical Engineer and loving it. We are all very good at something. Never give up.
Yay! My daughter and I totally had to pause this video to go to galaxyzoo, create accounts for both of us and start classifying galaxies - now look what you made us do!!
What a nice surprise seeing Brooke! I was in the remotely taught undergrad class you mentioned and can confirm she was great ☺️ good luck with the proposal!
Excellent video Dr Becky... in awe of professionals such as yourself. More content like this😀 The hands on and day to day are quite fascinating. As a proud father to a 13 y/o daughter I constantly asses academic professions in this ever changing world for “satisfaction in the daily grind”. Have a good day from Southern California!
I love your videos! I always feel bad for working out around 11 or 12 because for any reason I feel like I should do it early but you really make me feel better about it 👏 also I enjoy you talking about astrophysics since I want to pursue that too
I was so fond of choosing bachelor's in astrophysics. But I failed to convince my parents. Currently looking forward to opt aerospace engineering, then switch on to astrophysics. You are truly inspiring. I wish to speak on this to you.
This video helps to get a really great interest in astrophysics field . I am in the medical field but i love to learn about astrophysics, that's why i really wait to watch Dr. Becky's video
Aaaand when you end up getting extra protein in your avocado toast, it's time for a trim. Congratulations on the Muse submission! I hope you have much success!
I stumbled across your channel a few days ago and have been watching a bunch of them. I think I want to become an astrophysicist or at least something to do with space or aeronautics! I am only 16 so I am not sure yet, but your videos are so fun and educational to watch! Thanks so much!
I luv the specific technical videos you make but these human insight ones are in my humble opinion are especially special. You're so young which is a gud thing. You couldn't have been where you are when l taught A & O-level physics at Tynemourh College in North Shields back in 1978-9. I wish l cud have ahown your videos to them as l had a number of really bright n capable young women that l still fondly remember after all these years. I wonder how things might be different if l cud have tapped into your intelligence, enthusiasm and cute beauty back then? It's water over the dam now. Here and now you are such a source of inspiration to so many. Oh it's cool to see you have a special friend? I'm happy for you but more happy for him as he's one of the luckiest bloats in the UK! 😘
Thank you for bringing up Zooniverse! I had no idea it existed. I am an aspiring astronomer (just started my undergrad) and this is a cool way to get my toes wet in the field that I love! And I haven't even taken a physics or astronomy course yet. Thank you!!
15:00 - Oh yes, that week or two was lovely. Shame about the weather this week. At least the rain yesterday morning meant no queue to get into Sainsbury's for my weekly shop (20+ queue previous two weeks around the same time)!
Your life is inspiring! I loove Astronomy and I aspire to become an Astrophysicist one day. And I'd like to see myself busy and productive as you. Amazing!
'Can't bloody see....' Brilliant. I'm a novice astronomer who has invested in a Celestron AstroMaster 114EQ Refl. Telescope and these were the first words out of my mouth when I realised I'd left the bloody eyepiece in the box. Us Yorkies are sharp, eh? Think I will go and catch up on your No Phosgene On Venus shortly. It's been big news for the last 3 months. Thanks for posting, lass. Keep 'em coming. We'll watch 'em. ;)
A recent poster’s question about how to help with Covid modelling reminded me of a program where people can donate spare CPU cycles when there computer is not being used. it’s a massively parallel processing program from Berkeley in the US called Berkeley Open Infrastructure Process Computing. Go to boinc.org to see how to participate. There are many science projects you can join and just let your computer grind away. It automatically downloads and uploads the datasets for processing and you can configure the amount of system resources and times for execution. My favorite top 3 projects are Einstein, climate prediction and Rosetta. They are respectively searching for new pulsars, a model for climate prediction and protein folding mismatches which what causes many diseases. I’ve been a member since 2010 and it’s nice to know I’m helping propel science in the world. I do know IBM is setting up a processing model, currrently in beta test, to map the Covid virus. Sorry for the pedantic advertisement, but it’s a way to help our scientific brethren while we’re all sitting at home.
Sorry, but I just checked and boinc.org is not a valid url. Please just search for the whole string of Berkeley Open infrastructure Network computing. Darn as I thought the acronym url was childishly amusing 😜.
Your poor neck 😭😭 but also, I’m a PhD student (conservation biology) stuck at home getting NOTHING done. Work from home productivity tips video please? 😍
I know its been 2 years since this video, but currently I can relate as I am on day 8 of covid positive lock-down. Test again on day 10 (11) because Sunday lol. Binging your videos during this time. Thanks for enlighten and entertaining me.
This quarantine has made me realize how bored I am working in coding business applications. Working from home is a blessing, but has become more difficult as motivation dwindles. I enjoy watching your enthusiasm with what you do and I'm hoping I can rediscover mine.
I’m a senior undergrad student who has been working on an x-ray astronomy project this summer!! This video was super fun to watch and imagine what my life will be like if I continue on this amazing astrophysics path!
I am just coming to the end of (the first) 5 months of hell, working at home in a house where I live alone. Today I have already spoken to a real person face to face. This does not usually happen before I finish work at 6. Humans didn't evolve to do this and I am only now starting to reach an imperfect accommodation with it. I don't think I will ever go back to work in the head office of my employer which is 150 miles away. I hate the dull and overcrowded Home Counties and the only good thing about where my employer is based is that it is near the A1 Great North Road. Your home is modern and neat and tidy. Mine is none of these things. But I also write for my living and I don't think your working environment gets the best out of you. Offices have large desks, purpose-designed office chairs, PCs with a large screen, and preferably two, and good lighting for a reason. I have been sitting here editing a series of complex documents which somebody has already struggled with over a laptop on their dining table, sitting at a normal low-backed dining chair.
Everything about (and everyone in!) this video is adorable. HOW do you DO that???? Thanks for bringing us science and chic all in one when we need it so much!!!
It's funny, when you said you didn't like the writing part of your job it reminded me of when I was in school. I studied English and English Literature and the science kids were ALWAYS asking us for help with their papers. A few days later they would inevitably come around thanking us after their grades came in. Pro tip for the science nerds in school: get a few language nerd friends to help you proofread and edit your written assignments. We're typically pretty good and getting you to trim the fat, boost your arguments, and usually fix typos for free. 😊
I'm stuck in my room with covid and I just want to say your day in the life at Oxford and this video have really given me so much inspiration and hope. Thank you :) Will subscribe and I look forward to watching more of your videos
Well, it's good to know that you're keeping busy. And so much variety! The kitchen. The living room. The studio. The . . . kitchen again. There's variety, don't question me! Nice Editing Becky cameo.
I just preordered the American version of your book, Space at the Speed of Light, for my Kindle. It's scheduled to be released in June. I look forward to reading it.

Hey can anyone become an astronaut by getting a major in astrophysics?

they probably compress metal also - what would that do to the metal
best forge irl??
No, Centure! A Centaur I say!
Wow - it's not every day you see Viktor Borge's name pop up. Was watching a few, very old, videos with him a few weeks ago.
Nice! I knew she’d be great 🤗
Excellent video Dr Becky... in awe of professionals such as yourself. More content like this😀 The hands on and day to day are quite fascinating. As a proud father to a 13 y/o daughter I constantly asses academic professions in this ever changing world for “satisfaction in the daily grind”.
Have a good day from Southern California!
I love your videos! I always feel bad for working out around 11 or 12 because for any reason I feel like I should do it early but you really make me feel better about it 👏 also I enjoy you talking about astrophysics since I want to pursue that too
0:35 You mentioned an astrophysicist's daily life includes coding and running simulations. M curious about what kind of coding does it involve.
I think she’s said it in her past a day in the life video
Python for generating and working on data sets, statistics, simulations etc. If I recall correctly
Watching you work for a day at home has made my day, cheers Dr. Becky
You’re welcome Sam!
I was so fond of choosing bachelor's in astrophysics. But I failed to convince my parents. Currently looking forward to opt aerospace engineering, then switch on to astrophysics. You are truly inspiring. I wish to speak on this to you.
Financial probs man.. 😔
Awesome day Becky, loved getting this peak into what you do.
. You seem to get a lot done is a day!
I'm tired just watching this!
Good luck on your proposal!
You're currently my favorite TH-cam person! Best wishes Dr! ❤
I want to be an astrophysicist , my childhood dream . 💓💓💓💓Love you dear .
I stumbled across your channel a few days ago and have been watching a bunch of them. I think I want to become an astrophysicist or at least something to do with space or aeronautics! I am only 16 so I am not sure yet, but your videos are so fun and educational to watch! Thanks so much!
One day of english sun and becky goes “can’t bloody see”.
I love how she talks about the Hubble Space telescope as like it is a neighbourhood cat
Thank you for bringing up Zooniverse! I had no idea it existed. I am an aspiring astronomer (just started my undergrad) and this is a cool way to get my toes wet in the field that I love! And I haven't even taken a physics or astronomy course yet. Thank you!!
Thank you for inspiration❤️
When I look up in the sky at night I see Dr. Becky. Thank you!
Now I know the answer to Johnny Depps' "Why is the Rum gone?"
15:00 - Oh yes, that week or two was lovely. Shame about the weather this week. At least the rain yesterday morning meant no queue to get into Sainsbury's for my weekly shop (20+ queue previous two weeks around the same time)!
At around 0:19 I swear I'm looking at Benny Hill !!!! It's bizarre .....Well done !!!!
Your life is inspiring! I loove Astronomy and I aspire to become an Astrophysicist one day. And I'd like to see myself busy and productive as you. Amazing!
"Your arse may be in lockdown but you are looking at teh stars!" (Olivia Myle 'd Uh)
I am in dire need of a haircut as well ! I have ordered your book and can't wait to have a read of it and Dr.-you rock!
True!
Thus I have identified why time has been moving soooooo slow.
you need a mouse. it'll make you a little more productive i promise.
I agree with you 💯
'Can't bloody see....' Brilliant.
So glad I found your channel. I'm a medical student but I really love physics so I'm gonna live vicariously through you.
Your poor neck 😭😭 but also, I’m a PhD student (conservation biology) stuck at home getting NOTHING done. Work from home productivity tips video please? 😍
I cannot comprehend this much science and I cannot follow anything that you discuss....but I am so in love with these videos!!!
"In dire need of a haircut" - I'm committed to my Doc Brown style by now. All I need is a DeLorean and it's goodbye 2020.
And plutonium...and a flux capacitor...
Really cool to see how things happen behind the scenes. Also delighted by preemptive answer #4 :)
An Astrophysicist just changed the rotational speed of the Earth by a factor of 84.
This is what happened to her day.
WOW, you snagged a day outside with the sun shining. Well done!
I love this video but I can’t stop laughing at the exercise part where she’s going 100 mph! 🤣😂
Then going “oww”.. “oww”...
I know its been 2 years since this video, but currently I can relate as I am on day 8 of covid positive lock-down. Test again on day 10 (11) because Sunday lol. Binging your videos during this time. Thanks for enlighten and entertaining me.
science never stops!
This quarantine has made me realize how bored I am working in coding business applications. Working from home is a blessing, but has become more difficult as motivation dwindles. I enjoy watching your enthusiasm with what you do and I'm hoping I can rediscover mine.
The long hair suits you nicely!
I’m a senior undergrad student who has been working on an x-ray astronomy project this summer!! This video was super fun to watch and imagine what my life will be like if I continue on this amazing astrophysics path!
The lockdown is proof of heaven and hell
Hell: in lock down by yourself
Heaven: in lock down with Dr. Becky.
:)
It's great to see that at least a part of our taxes is spent well (on science).
2:16 The MUSE is actually a pair of Pratt and Whitney R-4360s bolted together. The results should be interesting!
Just imagine Dr Becky testing XF-11...mmm
Hi Dr. Becky! Please make more "a day in the life" videos!!
Tell me you’re British, without telling me you’re British: I can‘t bloody see!
I'm stuck in my room with covid and I just want to say your day in the life at Oxford and this video have really given me so much inspiration and hope. Thank you :) Will subscribe and I look forward to watching more of your videos
Meanwhile I’m crying while watching kdramas 😭
Relatable 😃
Well, it's good to know that you're keeping busy. And so much variety! The kitchen. The living room. The studio. The . . . kitchen again. There's variety, don't question me!
Nice Editing Becky cameo.
Woo-hoo! I can comment again!
When we have tacos on a Wednesday, we call it Waco Wednesday. Then there's Thaco Thursday, etc.
Sam That begs the question : what IS Thursday's Armor Class?
This is so cool to see, thanks for sharing Dr. Beckyyy
5 weeks working from home, oh how I miss coffee shops...
Thank you so much for sharing a day in the life. So interesting and fun. Can’t wait to share with the kids.
Your living the life i always wanted; but i chose to study maths instead to provide for my family
The sound is really good. Just noticed. Amazing video once again.
I just preordered the American version of your book, Space at the Speed of Light, for my Kindle. It's scheduled to be released in June. I look forward to reading it.
I have the British version, it is worth the wait
Is the American version dumbed down? Why two versions?
Dr.Becky we would be really happy here in Chile to welcome u :)
Also oh my god I just realized that u'r using a Muse shirt, thats fucking fantastic
The toast fails! lololololol
