Epson ET-8550 Review and Hands On

- You don’t have a photograph in my opinion until it is a print. Printing for many has been intimidating and hard to do. Now, Epson introduces the Epson ET-8550 which takes printing to a whole new level. Not only does it make it super easy with high quality but it eliminates all those pesky ink cartridges of the past.

Loved your comment about Epson and their love affair with blue tape. We have used Epson printers extensively for more than 20 years. The hunt for the last piece of blue tape (no cheating by looking at the unpacking info) has turned into an after hours Las Vegas style game.
Sir, I love this video. I am not new to epson but I am new to this exact model and I just bought it today, filled it and turned it on. I was logged into the app within seconds. I’m ready to go and already got confused by cassette 1 and cassette 2… lol so here I am. Thanks for this video
A few months ago, I bought the Epson Ink Tank ET-4760 office printer. It is fantastic and I still have plenty of ink! It works great for daily use printing my wife's receipes and other things even including the old fashion faxing ability. But it isn't a very good color printer. When I bought it, I told my photo friends, Epson should come out with a Ink Tank Photo Printer. I'm glad Espon listened!
Hi Jay. You mentioned the Palouse in your video. Are you based in Spokane? If so would you be willing to work with me on printing some of my pictures. I'm finding the shipping from the photo lab is driving me to consider printing my own pictures, but I'm not sure that I want to make the investment and would be happy to pay a local printer to make prints. Thanks Brett. Please reply by to this message and we can figure out a way to get in contact.
@@DrGorifish I live in Texas. I think you meant your message to go to photoPXL. He does do print workshops but I believe he is having to move at the moment.
@@gosman949 Thanks. I'm sorry, you looked so much like photoPXL I thought this was your video. Thanks for the reply. Best.
@@DrGorifish oh no! I'm much more handsome than photoPXL. I know! All of us old guys look the same!
You've got to love seeing passionate people talk about their passion. I love how you walked through the quality of this printer, what you use it for, and how you feel about it. I'm a contractor looking for a printer to help me make direct marketing material for my mailing list. I have a brother laser printer, and I can't stand it. I feel like the ET-8550 is going to be the way to go for me. Thanks so much for this review!
Thank you Kevin... I've been researching printers for over a month, bought one, then watched another video on it, and cancelled before shipping. Then I found you. It didn't take me long to think: Whatever this guy says...I'm a buyer... The price is a couple hundred more than I had planned, but like you said: If they don't get you coming, they'll get you going... So I bit the bullet. Plus, there were a couple of really cool features! That's always a positive with me! Have a great day, and thank you again... Mark
I just came across your comment and I am looking as well for a printer to do some prints of group photos of people at work that I took and will be taking, so after 5 months of usage, how did you find it ? I really like what Kevin's explained and showcased, but lets hear from a new buyer as well .. thank you in advance
Thank you so very much for the very much needed information on this printer. Out of the eleven printers I have researched on, this is the one that wins hands down. Now I know, confidently, which one I'm buying. 📸
I just bought this and I’m also excited to learn from another review that you can indeed buy epsons archival ink to refill with. Once I heard that it was a no brainer. Also this is a bit later and I just paid $499 for it! Yaya
Archival ink, sounds interesting. When I looked at it I started to wonder how long a print lasts.
Thanks for the information my HP Envy slowly got wonky overtime and I never owned an Epson before. I always wanted a 11x17 printer. It's new world for me and I just ordered it. I remember I loved my LexMark back in early 2k seems I went through a 100 HP Printers over the years. I'm ready for a new system! ;)
700 dollars isn't expensive compared to 200+x where x is the cost of expensive cartridges with tiny amounts of ink.
Every place I looked for this printer had it for $699 just after new year. All the sudden all vendors I found have raised their price to $799. I know they wouldn't do that just because people are about to receive their income tax returns . I just don't know why the price would suddenly jump like that.
This is an in depth review and i have enjoyed every part of it, thanks so much..
This video pushed me over the edge and i just bought the 8550. Thank you for your review!
Where I can't find them anywhere
@@NoBody-hz4po when I ordered it, it said it was in stock, it's been on back order this whole time. The only place I've seen them actually be in stock is with scalpers on ebay for twice the price
Thanks for taking the time to educate us on this printer. You just convinced me to get one. Gave you a sub.
Great Video... simplicity at its best... Thanks
Good morning Sir. I got one of the Epson 8850s last week. Can i ask you a question please. Do you know if there is any way to save a digital copy of a picture laid out in the Epson Photo + software but as a PDF or some form that can be opened in another computer that does not have the software? Thanks. Frantz
I just ordered this bad boy, can't wait to see how my prints turn out
have you ever tried printing a document on it? I work in design, and a lot of my work that I need printed contains text in addition to the artwork. I'd appreciate it if you'd give me your opinion on how it handles text? is it high-standard magazine quality?
I like this. I'll probably get one of these, I really want to get some 13x19s. Do you know the cost per page with what you'd consider quality paper?
Going to buy L8180 in 2 weeks. Had L3160, but got burned motherboard due to not correct printhead cleaning process. I love printing mine and my family life...Cheers from Poland.
Can you use profiles when printing from mobile?
Can you please share what camera and application do you use to make your video look so professional and the colors are amazing….
kevin, good to find you again!
it’s on sale for 499 right now. a must have for photo printing for sure.
Where?
@ Micro Center seems to be the only place selling it for that low.
thanks for this footage piece and info i have a epson workforce with my photos i have faded photos so i will turn my attention to this kind of printer cause i'm not into faded photos , Photos are excellent on that 1
thank you, I hadn't noticed the top load sections... pulling my hair out wondering how to print an envelope. great investment
What I was shipped was nonfunctional junk, coming brand new, straight out of the box with an incurable phantom paper jam. Epson's tech support is poor, with the phone being answered by someone with no apparent familiarity with this printer, who would probably have been easier to understand had I spoken Hindi, not English. Then they wanted photos of the ink tubes before they'd undertake to send a refurbished replacement. What this had to do with anything I've no idea, but the ink tubes are concealed in the 8550. Photographing them would require me to break out a screwdriver and start removing parts. Since I had a bit of concern that this was going to void the warranty, I decided to see if I could ship the thing back to Amazon instead. I've recommended Epson Ecotanks to people in the past, but never again.
Just purchased the ET-8500 for making prints of my paintings, and love the quality, but I am not very knowledgable with all things tech... I cannot seem to get files from Photoshop or anywhere else to print, other than the files I scanned on the Ecotank scanner. Is this a common issue? User error I'm sure, if you can offer any information I'd greatly appreciate it!
What makes you say it doesn't have archival longevity? Isn't that the purpose of those claria premium inks? I say that because the earlier photo style eco tank printers did not use such ink, which is why i was not interested in them and am now interested in this one!
This is a great help., I have a home office style eco tank printer and it is great at that but I want something better for my photos. I Think will do alot for me, thanks for the video!
Thank you. This was very informative.
"OUTSTANDING", i just may pick one up TODAY!!!
Does it matter if you manually slide the tray out and manually push it back in. I know that the tray will automatically eject when it prints something and there is a button on the control panel to make it go back in but just wondering if there is any harm in just doing it manually both ways?
Great video!! Thank you for sharing 🎉
Hello! Thank you for the video. I really enjoyed this, I am now a subscriber, and this printer is very much on my radar! Thanks again! - Alfred
I just recieved my 8550 and while I'm happy with the quality I'm facing problems with paper... Every paper seems to work fine and so on except Hahnemühle Photo Rag :(
I purchased a couple of Sample Packs and while printer works fine on normal paper or Epson matte paper, when it comes to Hahnemühle Photo Rag (any gsm) you can see the lines from dragging the paper while printing.
Did you faced this problem or how do you think I could fix it? even changing the paper config it makes no difference :(
Thank you!!
what about the errors? paper jams? how to fix it. & removal of pizza rollers
Good video. After 2 years the printer is now $550.00. I heard on another video that you could use third party Pigment inks. Is that true. And if I want to use it for photos and regular printing is that the best options to use Pigment based inks. I used to have maybe 4 or 5 years ago another epson photo quality printer that it did use pigment based ink cartridges and even the gloss clear spay cartridge. I think 7 cartridges in total. But it kept clogging the print heads to often.
can you use pigment inks with this?
can you please show how to load papers of various types? thanks kindly
How does the Epson drivers work with never mac OS like Sonoma or Sequoia? Looking at this or the Epson EcoTank ET-4850
Thank you for your video I have a canon pro 10 and one thing I like about the Canon is it after I print it applies a clearcoat automatically over your print. Does this Epson have that same feature thank you. PS I know this is a die based Ink. most of the cannons have pigmented inks do you see a difference besides fading after 20 years.
Thanks for the review! Do you know how images print on 28lb regular paper?
Can you please tell me where the matte and satan finish paper setting is located? Many thanks.
Thanx for the video, 70 ml of ink in each bottle. Any idea how much each color tank holds??
Can you print regular office prints and documents on this printer as well?
Yes
Hi, thank you for your review. Question; would you recommend this printer for making copies of my original watercolor paintings? thanks!
bud .... can you reccomend a toner printer good for photos?
Hi! Thank you for the video. I am a bookbinder and I’m considering buying this print for my projects. I have a laser printer as I mostly bind novels or planners (5-15 a month), but considering adding some colours, maybe magazines or even photo albums, but probably my work will still be 70% just text, 30% graphs and photos.
Is this printer good for that? Will I waste ink or printing books will take too long or make the black runs out super faster?
I haven’t found anyone talking about text printing on this printer. It’s hard to find information online.
Thanks a lot!
What camera did you use to record this video with?
How many 11x17 sheets of plain paper can it hold on the rear tray?
Does it print normal documents well?
Does this printer have "print lines" like the less expensive epson printers ie ET-2760?
When will the EPSON ET-8550 be available again?
I heard this printer also has a tray you can use for printing directly onto CDs and DVDs. Is this true?
How do you add 2 images to a o page to print.
Question. I started buying digital kits for crafting and print on card stock and matte paper. My current Epson only allows a single sheet of paper through the rear tray. How many pages can this printer handle through the back tray ?
Could you tell me if you could print a panaramic photo say 13 inch x 23 inch ?
How does it do black and white? Is there a color cast?
I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max try so many time to connect to the printer. It’s all connected, but will not print.
How does the print longevity or this compare to digital C-prints?
Is it worth it to get extended warranty ? Also how are brilliant purples and rich blues?

Mad at myself I have the artisan 710 and I bought new ink for it do print stuff I don’t want to print on my p800. Well after several head cleaning the ink no longer prints on 3 of the new colours . The more I tried to fix it the worse it got. So I’m wanting this 8550. On sale but now out of stock. Bummer. I’ll have to get it on an interest free payment plan with best buy. As for the artisan that’s $90 of ink cartridges down the drain.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the 8550. Would you mind sharing what 4x6 paper you are using that is 4 cents a print?
I think the 4 cents is the cost of the ink, not including the paper.
What about borderless flyer with 6-8 pages on EPSON duplex automatically… I try everything and no work
Hello can you tell me if power supple is dual voltage 110-220v
You got me at Enterprise 🤗
Can't seem to get Epson Print Layout working with my Mac. It just says printer not found.
Hi Kevin,
how durable are the dye ink prints of this printer?
Until now, the lack of longevity of dye ink prints has always been a disadvantage compared to pigment inkjet prints.
Oliver, I do talk about that in the article. There are no definitive aging tests on these inks yet. If you want real archival prints then spend a little more money and get the P700 printer. This printer offer fast and easy printing. I would say that the dye inks will last a long time but I don't want to go out ona limb on this one. Henry Wilheim may have some answers and I will contact him to discuss this and possibly do an article.
Can't you use some spray to make them last longer? Serious question. Or would it distort the colors?
@@juna61 I don't think so. Museum Glass will help but that's also the case if you use a printer only with pigment inks. In die end it's like Kevin said, we've to wait what Henry Wilhelm will say.
When they’re available at MSRP from the major retailers I’ll pick one up.
Seems like a lot of things these days there is a back order list at most places. I'm sure these printers will be headed to retail chains.
You should be the guy who knows this (finally) - I have ARCH C flat paper (not rolls) I am trying to find a desktop solution to use this paper for B&W blueprint pages.
Hi Kevin,
Do you have anymore videos on this 8550?
I’m supposed to pick mine up this weekend and I’m trying to learn all I can…
Have you found out anything about the ink as far as it being archival ?
I would like to do prints to sell and for scrapbooking and arts and crafts…
And of course to display in my home….
Thank you!
I have this one. See what I 🖨 recently (link is mp4 file from my Google drive) drive.google.com/file/d/1O6djyE98bR0GuTHBCas_PYRufk9F3JHa/view?usp=drivesdk
I find my 8550 prints poorly for busy areas of nature photography. For example area of grass or busy petals of a flower (such as a thistle) detail is missing to point the image looks out of focus - but only in the very busy region, for a explain a buyer flip sitting on the thistle flower is crisp but the petals are blury. I ma using high quality paper with a print profile. Any advice welcome.
Sorry typos.... I mean a butterfly on the thistle flower.....
Can you print on fabric with this printer?
I’ve been in the verge of buying a color printer for a while now and start printing again! This would be a great replacement for my old Stylus Photo 890 ( no typo here) not used in a very long time now… You sold me on this one for its simplicity and I am buying one when available! BTW…I always like to play around in the basement…😂…Cheers and be safe!
is there a way for the output tray to close automatically? thanks
Sure. Just tap the button in the ap or on thescreem
Great review. What are the physical dimensions of the printer?

Great review sir!
What do you think about the Canon Pixma megatank G620? Quality printing difference with the epson Et-8550? I ask you because it is really cheaper for me. Thanks for the respond🌸
i have the Canon PIXMA G3260 Wireless MegaTank All-in-One Printer and its absolute crap prints red and back together so im returning and gunna try this one instead!!
I have the G620 and absolutely love it! I've had larger format 'pro' level pigment based ink printers in the past, and currently also use a Canon Pro-100 for larger prints... However since getting the G620 it has become my go-to for most photo printing tasks. It really does a great job...especially when matched with Canon's pro photo papers. So nice to not have to change cartridges all the time! Considering this Epson Et-8550 to replace my Pro-100 for 13x19 printing.
I have a G620 and it is excellent
What is the black printer to your right? Could not find with model numbers mentioned.
Epson SC-P700
To the point of archival quality, do you think the prints will last 100 years on a archival mat paper? Have you seen degradation?
Hi Kevin, thanks for the video. Did you try B&W? If yes, what is your opinion for printing B&W on this printer?
I am not Kevin, but I would answer your question as I had privilege to see bw results with this printer. With EPL and advanced bw printing + right choice of paper you get very decent results without much color cast. I would say that for majority it could be 95% as good as Epson’s pro models. Just make sure you are using right mode for bw!
@@artjomkutuzov1350 Thank you
Whats the difference of wasting a cartridge than wasting a bottle?
On the specs it says it prints cardstock. Wonder how thick
It's 700 plus tax and want to buy one to take to Argentina ,but if not dual voltage is a problem 110-220v is this product dual voltage on power supply? Like a laptop or cellphone charger!!!
Can this print a 12x12 photo?
does it scan A3 please?
If anyone could help me with this printer and this particular problem I would be ever so grateful. This is the second ecotank ET-8550 I've had after sending the first one back as I thought it was faulty.
I simply CANNOT get the rollers to pick up paper from casette 2. It says paper out/load paper. I've tried everything, pushing the paper in to the casette as far as it will go, just loading one peice, loading it with 25 etc. The feeder will just not pick up the paper (it's just basic A4 plain paper). Surely two printers cannot be faulty with exactly the same problem??
Just wondering if the printer may actually be trying to pick up paper from cassette 1 because cassette 2 hasn't been selected in the settings of the application or however you're trying to use it. I have had an error only to realise that it was wanting to print from empty rear tray on photo paper simply because that's how I last used it and didn't change settings back. Just a thought. (I have the 8500 - the A4 version of the 8550)
Love the output from this printer but I have had nothing but headaches with Photoshop crashing when the ET-8550 print drivers are installed on my PC. I have been troubleshooting for over a week - still crashes. Any insight into compatibility issues with Adobe Photoshop?
Did you resolve this? I have a mac
Hi Kev, is this printer ok for document printing in black?

Random question does anyone with one know if there is a way to close the print tray from app or can it only be done on the printer itself

Great video pal good energy :)
Sold.
Where does the waste ink go? Can it be emptied?
no, it goes to trash. You need to buy a new one each time.
Excellent presentation. Now I have make my wife to "forget about it", or should we get this Epson, I will have to face piles of printed images by my wife... She would consume our money on the "consumables."
Do you think it’ll print well on heat transfer paper? Not sublimation, using its regular ink..
I'm not sure. That didn't come up at all in discussions. I'll try to get you an answer.
@@photoPXL 1 year later...
Hi, my name is Frank from The Netherlands, Europe.
Very nice printer this Epson ET-8550.
But I have a question. At this moment I have a Canon G2560, that is the European version of a printer with Eco-tanks (4 coulors) that can print in A4, scan and copy. He can't print A3.
The Canon has some sort of cartridge at the back of the printer to collect the waste-ink. The cartridge is replacable, so I also have a reserve ink-waste-cartridge for that.
My question is: where does the Epson ET-8550 let his waste-ink?
the 8550 printer ist not working without opening all around. I don t like that silly Epson Systems for printing.
what REALLY dissapointeed me is that the scanner is smaller than A3
For the obvious reason that it would double the size of the device.
Wonderful video. I hope the shift to ink tanks kills HP, their 'engineers' have made our printing lives hell for so long that I'd gladly spend $1k+ to stay away from them. Dishonesty to the next level.
