1. The Adoption
Joseph inherits Reuben’s double portion.
Ephraim and Manasseh’s place in the Twelve Tribes of Israel.
Jacob secures Joseph’s lineage.
Adoption affects identity and rights.
Reflection/Discussion Questions: What is one thing you value from being adopted as God’s child?
For Kids: What part do you like about God being your heavenly Father?
2. The Twist
The significance of left hand and right hand.
A continued pattern of younger brother over older brother.
God’s will vs. our expectations.
Reflection/Discussion Questions: What are the times when you feel like God is unfair? Where do you think those feelings come from?
For Kids: What would you do if someone gave you ice cream that is not your favourite flavour?
3. The Future
Ending Jacob and Joseph’s story.
Jacob prophesies by faith to accompany God’s prior promises. The promises for tomorrow should affect how we live today.
Reflection/Discussion Questions: What is one promise of God that influences how you behave? How so?
For Kids: If mommy and daddy promised to take you to an amusement park after they’re open again on a Saturday, would you stay up late on Friday night? Why or why not?
Conclusion
Know: Despite our expectations, God works according to His good will.
Be: Confident in God’s promises even when our expectations are not met.
Do: Live according to convictions that are based on God’s promises.
