❤ Congratulations 50 years since Pippin 1973 2023 This is the song that has been with me since I first heard it, and it is still relevant thank you William Katt
Hey...I sat next to William Katt at a Rick Springfield concert in 1983. I had no idea he was a Broadway star. I just thought it was cool that he was the lead on "The Greatest American Hero." Memories!
they used stage mics im pretty sure which are on the stage usually close in shape to the stage to blend in. these are called omni directional microphones.
@@katherine9109close in shape for the microphones on the stage . This means the microphones are flat or as close to that shape as possible . Microphones when possible like all theater equipment is used to enhance a production without making people focus on it. Actors , stage crew create an ancient form of TV the stage is the screen and the objective is to entertain and create an experience "where people can come and waste an hour or two" .
You can tell this is hard for William Katt to sing, but the gravely sound on the high notes, the falsetto put perfectly at the end, and the surfer dude vibes I get, This is my favorite Pippin bar none. Ben Vereen's and Chita Rivera's look says it all.
This has always been one of my favorite productions. William Katt is a delight to watch and listen to. I also like the costuming and staging of the musical. A visually and aurally great performance!
Both Ben Vereen and William Katt starred in tv shows created by the late great Stephen J. Cannell. Ben was in Tenspeed and Brownshoe (1980) and Katt was in Greatest American Hero (1981).
One of my favorite aspects of this rendition of the song is the fact that the players watch stoically in the background, almost judging him or sizing him up. He's alone despite the fact that the stage is full. I've seen many versions of Pippin where the players get into the song and encourage Pippin...and I really prefer this. It sets up how odd and sinister the players are, and just how different Pippin is from them. I love it.
Oh jeez, William is so freakin’ gorgeous. He has a dancer’s body where muscles run smooth. . . And can sing like an eagle soaring. You had your day - you had it. . .
Then there’s Ben Vereen - the master of dance, of song, of Broadway! He went on to do many other productions - he was extraordinary and he had luck on his side for a long while. I love you, Mr. Vereen, wherever you are.
You won't know him, but God Bless Donald Rafte. He was my director for Pippen in 1999.in a youth theatre program. He believed in every single one of us that we could do something great. He passed away from cancer in 2005. I miss him terribly.
Thanks to both for responding. Also sang "'Corner of the Sky" in High School- over 30 years ago- and loved it, but watching the video wasn't exactly interesting to me. Since I have to direct the music next year where I teach, I was interested to hear what other kids thought of the show. i will keep a more open mind about it now- thanks!
Wow thanks so much for saving this and sharing it, how awesome to see William play this role, I didn't know he did and I never knew he could sing, been a fan of his since I was a child and watched him in Greatest American Hero
TV series... around the Reagan assassination attempt by Hinkley.... He played the hero in "Greatest American Hero", a teacher named Ralph Hinkley... they tried to salvage the series by changing the name to Hinkle, but it did not work and it was cancelled...
Pablo Laucerica - I played Leading Player in the touring company of Pippin as well as the dinner theatre production. Mr Fosse is peobably turning in his grave over the DISASTEROUS revival of the show. In my most honest opinion...it SUCKED!!! The entire inner meaning of who Lead Player was to Pippin as well as the imagined troupe of players is totally lost in the circus environment. Mr. FOSSE explained to us that we were the embodiment of Pippin's inner struggle between his wanting to be extraordinary vs. The Reality of life that it is the simple things that make our lives glorious. Lead Player is Pippin's subconscious who leads him (or rather Pippin leads himself) in the exploration of the many aspects in life (i.e.: war, sex, drugs, politics...only to find in Catherine and her son Theo, that he's happiest when he realizes that that is what makes life extraordinary after all.
First time I ever saw this show in its entirety was at the Red Barn in Key West, circa1980. Tom Murtha, Joy Hawkins, John Wells and Mimi McDonald! All neighbors of mine, in the theater commune. Great days.
@Kereak - this was not his first role. he also starred in "Carrie", as her ill-fated prom date Tommy Ross; in "Big Wednesday"; in "First Love"; and "Butch and Sundance: The Early Years" before he did "Pippin".
@markxxx21 Could you or somebody tell me exactly where he went off key? Because if her did, I never noticed... Also, you try getting up on stage in front of a couple thousand people right in front of you, as well as a live television audience, and try to sing and move perfectly, and then show it to William Katt.
I love this song. It might be my favorite one from Pippin. I asked in another video why William Katt didn't wear shoes though the entire show. Then someone responded to my comment saying it was because Pippin was a hippie. Is that true?
I saw the Broadway production in 1976 with John Rubinstein as Pippin (he also recorded the cast album) and Ben Vereen as the Leading Player. It's what got me hooked on Broadway. William Katt is way better-looking, but I thought Rubinstein was the better singer.
TV series... around the Reagan assassination attempt by Hinkley.... He played the hero in "Greatest American Hero", a teacher named Ralph Hinkley... they tried to salvage the series by changing the name to Hinkle, but it did not work and it was cancelled...
Actually, I thought he did a very acceptable job in the role. Pretty good Broadway type of voice. And he fit in the costume fairly well. There are better I'm sure but not horrible.
It's an amazing play. TRY OUT FOR IT!!!! the play is about the eldest son of a king who doesn't fit in anywhere. It's really good. The Leading Player is basically the Devil. Which of course makes everything he does really flashy and awesome. XD There's a lot of meanings and lessons you can draw from this play if you think about it. and it's just good even if you don't think about it. XD
This is my favorite song from Pippin. Anyone know why William Katt didn't wear shoes through the entire show? Someone once said it's because Pippin was a hippie. Is that true?
Reminds of my school days. I wanted to play Pippin, but it was only a dream. Now I'm grandfather. Maybe I can play grandpa Pippin.
❤ Congratulations 50 years since Pippin 1973 2023 This is the song that has been with me since I first heard it, and it is still relevant thank you William Katt
Son of Della Street!
I just now am pleasantly surprised at this knowledge
Hey...I sat next to William Katt at a Rick Springfield concert in 1983. I had no idea he was a Broadway star. I just thought it was cool that he was the lead on "The Greatest American Hero." Memories!
This was a tour production, but damn close to Broadway, admittedly.
I saw him play Harold Hill in The Music Man back in '84. It was the first time that I ever saw a "real celebrity" in person. I was stoked!Lol!
William Katt does a beautiful, heartfelt version of this song!
Considering the lack of mic’s and Mr Katt having to sing over the brass section that’s BLAIRING his is my favorite version.
they used stage mics im pretty sure which are on the stage usually close in shape to the stage to blend in. these are called omni directional microphones.
Mine also
@@doctortimetv1577
what do you mean by "close in shape"?
And probley reseherd with the music really loud

Wonderfully heart-felt performance by William Katt!
Both Ben Vereen and William Katt starred in tv shows created by the late great Stephen J. Cannell. Ben was in Tenspeed and Brownshoe (1980) and Katt was in Greatest American Hero (1981).
You should check out William's acting careet...it is long, very long...6 decades and counting.
Ben Vereen was also "Chicken George" in the original "Roots" (Alex Haley's great-grandfather).

William Katt is magnificent singing this heartfelt tune.
Oh jeez, William is so freakin’ gorgeous. He has a dancer’s body where muscles run smooth. . . And can sing like an eagle soaring. You had your day - you had it. . .
He is still hot at 73
I saw him with Ben Vereen and Anne Reinking in Pippin n Broadway. WOW!!
William is very talented. His performance is moving and spirited.
I love his performance. He starts the song off lost and confused about his future. But finish the song excited for the journey to come.
This is my audition piece whenever I do auditions.
William Katt. What a doll. Ben, what a talent.
My gosh I never realised what a great singer he is !
This really hits the number perfectly.
I love the ending lines to this play:
"How do you feel?"
"Trapped......which is not bad for a musical."
Tada!
“…….which is not too bad, for the end of a musical comedy.”
Love ❤️ that line too
One of the best songs ever written!! i think a theatre company near me is gonna do this musical an i really want to be a leading player!!
one of the BEST scene changes in the HISTORY of musical theatre, the set designer is genius
I met him at a con last night. He was so nice!!! I got to hug him ❤❤
God, brilliant- I miss this stuff!
Then there’s Ben Vereen - the master of dance, of song, of Broadway! He went on to do many other productions - he was extraordinary and he had luck on his side for a long while. I love you, Mr. Vereen, wherever you are.
Ben Vereen is just an awesome presence and no one can replace him...
I love this musical. Every Time I hear these songs it sends a shiver up my spine. Amazing group of actors.
William Katt moves so beautifully.
and Ben Vereen is the Great Ben Vereen.
William Katt is the son of Barbara Hale, the actress who played Della Street on the TV show Perry Mason. She made that role hers. Iconic.
You won't know him, but God Bless Donald Rafte. He was my director for Pippen in 1999.in a youth theatre program. He believed in every single one of us that we could do something great. He passed away from cancer in 2005. I miss him terribly.

Who would've thought Tommy Ross had such an amazing set of Vocals?
Or Mr. Hinckley!
William Katt, a Broadway star. And good too! Who knew?
That was the most awesome set change ever.
That's awesome.
Seeing William Katt in Pippin was probably when I knew I was gay. Gosh was he adorable!
+PhillyFrank1 I just discovered this actor/singer this morning, I agree: he was adorable.
TV series... around the Reagan assassination attempt by Hinkley.... He played the hero in "Greatest American Hero", a teacher named Ralph Hinkley... they tried to salvage the series by changing the name to Hinkle, but it did not work and it was cancelled...
I like him too ,but I don't think he makes a good singer.
PhillyFrank1 - Will is ...was a real cutie. I loved doing Pippin with him on tour.
I don’t think he’s gay
I like his way of singing it then the new Broadway cast.
I actually like this better than the new Broadway cast version. I dunno i like the new one as well, but this one is just outright impressive as heck.
Have you listened to the Kyle Dean Massey version?
I have seen it but I like this way better.
+Pablo grew up on shows tunes; first heard Pippin in car; prefer original cast
Pablo saw Ben Vareen and Anne Reinking in this year's ago doesn't get better

We always go where we can reconnect with this timeless proclamation of where we will soar. Stay safe everyone!
He found his corner of the sky later that year (1981) as The Greatest American Hero.
Really? That's amazing! I feel like the Leading Player is a very versatile character. He/she could be anyone. And thank you very much. :)
First time I ever saw this show in its entirety was at the Red Barn in Key West, circa1980. Tom Murtha, Joy Hawkins, John Wells and Mimi McDonald! All neighbors of mine, in the theater commune. Great days.
That's the type of man I would fall in love with ❤
Me too!
@@paanne1013love him soo much x
I think this is the best performance ever of Corner of the Sky....
@Kereak - this was not his first role. he also starred in "Carrie", as her ill-fated prom date Tommy Ross; in "Big Wednesday"; in "First Love"; and "Butch and Sundance: The Early Years" before he did "Pippin".
Now I'd like to see this song performed by Kat Williams.
LOL! Who the comedian?...

I met William Katt last year (twice!) and he said that he'd be willing to star in an episode of "Glee" if they asked him.

The best!
I love that you went to a Rick Springfield concert. :)
I'm taking a break from college next fall, so I identify.
It's "Chicken George" and "The Greatest American Hero"!
You can always count on chicken George
this show is so unique--

Have you seen that Broadway is doing a Revival with a female leading player? It looks amazing!
I couldn't bare it
@markxxx21 Could you or somebody tell me exactly where he went off key? Because if her did, I never noticed...
Also, you try getting up on stage in front of a couple thousand people right in front of you, as well as a live television audience, and try to sing and move perfectly, and then show it to William Katt.
Markxxx21 is a A-hole and just had to make a negative comment....William Katt has a beautiful voice and sang this song perfect.
Yes, many productions have had the Lead Player played by a girl, and it works just fine. This role was intended to be either male or female.
I love this song. It might be my favorite one from Pippin. I asked in another video why William Katt didn't wear shoes though the entire show. Then someone responded to my comment saying it was because Pippin was a hippie. Is that true?
I'm singing this in chorus at my school.
I saw the Broadway production in 1976 with John Rubinstein as Pippin (he also recorded the cast album) and Ben Vereen as the Leading Player. It's what got me hooked on Broadway. William Katt is way better-looking, but I thought Rubinstein was the better singer.
Is that Tommy from Carrie??
William Katt, he has done so much in acting over 6 decades in the business.
Saw the Broadway revival last night. The Lead Player was a woman, and she was fantastic.
Ewwwww no thanks

Doing this as a solo. :)
we are singing this song in my choir class.. :D?
I'm singing his for chorus
words mean about living the dream
Where would you guys say is the setting for this song? Is he at the theatre? In a study? In a library?
Holy crap
In my high school production we had a female leading player.
That's Patina Miller for you. Being all Tony nominated twice and junk. Haha!
