Thanks for the video, Jared. I appreciate you sharing your insights within the industry. On a funny note... I thought it was kind of cute that you're holding that DJI Mike to your mouth and there's a condenser mic on a boom arm behind you attached to the desk. 😂
I appreciate the honesty especially the hopes of being able to succeed to provide but not wanting to get lost in too much work or anything. And I definitely hear you on stepping up the exercise, I'm in a similar boat. Not so related to filmmaking but you should try jumproping too for exercise, it can be an even more efficient way to burn calories compared to what it'd take for jogging/running. I used to run (jog) too which is still great, but I started incorporating jumprope and it's good stuff too 💪💪 keep it up man - subbed 👏👏
@lensofjared yea running can definitely be therapeutic, I should do that more often myself lol with jumproping just be careful not to overdo it at first, especially if you might have bad knees like I do, it can be extra tough at first so it'd be good to mix it in with jogging etc 👍
@lensofjared Btw Jared I'm gonna message you on Instagram just a heads up regarding a tip for future car reels that might be helpful (it's too much text to post on here lol)
13:52 about the “not waisting time” I think it is unnecessary. Apologising is sort of doing it though. There is nothing to apologise about. Be short and on point. Love your transparent and honest content man.
Hell yeah, Jared! Keep up the grind, man! Are there any productivity apps or workflows that you rely on that keep everything together? I've enjoyed this content a lot. Seeing the process of marketing yourself makes it seem easier. I appreciate the transparency and I'm looking forward to the next one!
Great video man. Today I went over to 14 businesses. Had 1 potential client who’s very interested, now waiting on an answer. The others are so and so depending on their marketing budget. I didn’t offer free video. Social media plan starts at 10 videos per month, if they want to test it out without going all in, I offered 2/3 videos instead but it’s a one time deal meaning they either take it or leave it as it’s suppose to be a (discount) since the minimum is 10 videos. If that makes sense. Will do aim to do 15/20 tomorrow. Truly, I’d rather email them but it gets easier. One thing I stopped doing is checking their socials media before going inside. If I see they have some posts it would discourage me from walking in and I’d just walk by.
Bro, I literally found you a couple of weeks ago, I’m based in AZ.And I just want to say, your content has come at a perfect timing. I was wondering, can you tell people once they’ve opened up to you that you have worked for big companies like EA Sports? I know it doesn’t apply for every scenario, but in some I think it can open you a lot of doors.
I really do need to find a way to setup that I’m an established professional. When the lady said “he’s trying to get his business off the ground” I died a little haha
I like the honesty from you, I hard agree people can sense it. For some reason, I think some people may disagree with that. I also want to get better at saying people's names out loud when I meet people to remember it. Side note: What's the battery life like on that Osmo/Mic?
Definitely could’ve picked a better shirt but, I also don’t ever notice it too much. I feel like in the states, it’s not AS important but, definitely plan to look more decent next time haha
I’d suggest using leverage. Say I’m in the area because I just shot a video for “Dealership A” and wanted to offer to shoot a free video for you while I was here. Even if you only shot a free sample video for another dealership, the next dealership may not want to miss out on what their competitor just received.
Hey Jared, this is Jarrod. I always approach it with “creating content” and I try and keep the word free out and call it a favor. I think you can get much further:)
As someone who has worked with car dealerships in the Sherman, TX area, I can say that they do not care at all and have zero interest in hiring a freelancer to create content. I have ran into this issue on so many occasions
First I want to say that I think it's really cool that you are sharing your journey at this early stage and being transparent with your thought process. You being humble and polite about it speaks to me personally. I'm in similar situation were the next natural step for me in my work journey as a fotografer is to start a business to and I'm also leaning towards documenting it like you do so I have a question. When you are secretly recording during your cold approaches like in this video do you at some stage tell them that it is recording and if it's okay for you to post it for your TH-cam. The angle of my question is not if it might be illegal or not but rather if you let them know at some point, I guess for the reason of being honest, polite and transparent. Do you do that, when and how during the conversation do you do that, or is that not important? Thanks again, from Sweden.
So in Texas, it’s a single consent party state, which means only one side has to consent. I don’t normally tell them because it makes things weird. They don’t understand why I’d be recording, especially with social media now, it comes off as being up to no good. I do make sure I hide their names and business, out of respect for them. Lastly, I would double check your local laws before doing this yourself.
Love the series! I’m really wanting to start recording my process but am afraid of people getting upset about being on camera etc. have you ran into that at all or has bringing a camera into these places not been a problem?
Haha well so far, I’ve finished and sent all the videos with no response. It’s only been a few hrs though. Hopefully that changes before next weeks episode.
Volkswagen video was decent man but the wide shots of the car were wayyy too low. Next time I'd try to get a variety of angles - high, low, eye level etc. But I know that feeling when there's a ton of eyes on you in the middle of the showroom lol
Some suggestions Connect with producers that already have clientele and also small marketing agencies. Also what Vmount you running powering your canera?
You are doing great bro. May I suggest when you do your cold calling wear a “uniform”. Polo shirt with your logo and long pants. If you need help with personalized polos 👕 I can hook you up.
If I could make a suggestion, instead of saying you don't want to waste your time, try phrasing it like I appreciate that your busy so I'll be quick for you. At the end of the day, if you're genuinely coming from a place of trying to help out your clients, you being there is a service to them. Saying you appreciate your time is more positive.
Jared, I respect your hustle, but you're marketing to the wrong people. You're running into the gatekeepers. In medium to large companies, the marketing person is most likely sitting behind a computer in a corporate office. These are the decision makers - and often have decent yearly marketing budgets. Don't even waste time talking to smaller business unless your wife wants to have an uphill battle in educating them, and pulling teeth to get them to spend even small amounts of $. In really large companies, and counties/cities/states, they hire marketing agencies. They handle all the marketing needs and subcontractors. And they pay really well. Those are the people you need to meet. You can submit public records requests to cities and states and figure out what they're spending yearly on marketing materials. Maybe part of your burnout is your pitch to do X amount of work within a retainer? In my opinion, it's a disservice to show up with one camera, no lights, and shoot something quickly. It's more valuable to focus on quality. The world is saturated with that "content". In the words of Steve Martin "Be undeniably good". Keep up the grind - you're going to be successful in whatever you do.
Even the guy that said corporate does everything is a potential customer. Talk up how you do videos of events, weddings, gender reveals, whatever. Try to get in his phone as "Video Jared", you never know.
Love this Jared, appreciate the hustle and the honesty that sometimes you gotta toe that line between physical grind and mental grind. Keep it up! One point of constructive criticism, if you have time for it, maybe add some burned-in subtitles/captions on screen when you do these cold approaches so its a bit easier to follow when we are staring at a leg or a shirt, I know Premiere has pretty easy captions that you can style and save/reuse over and over and it doesn't take too long to throw on there.
Noted!! I knew I should have, I almost did. Also I didn’t realize my DJI mic had the noise cancellation on which definitely didn’t help. I’ll keep this not for the next one!
Sugar and higher amounts of carbohydrates is a really big one when it comes to brain fog, that might be one of the issue. Love your videos as always, keep pushing in these periods, they always come to pass !
@@lensofjared I'm saying they usually play a big part in causing it. Higher fat content food like avocado or meat reduce greatly the brain fog. I was shooting in a chocolate factory last week, had quite a few chocolates and my brain felt foggy for the rest of the day it was terrible. I mean the food you eat is really important, exercising as well. Due to you stopping the caffeine you might be feeling the effect a bit stronger to.
@@lensofjared Well I hope this helps really. Maybe try for a week or 2 to avoid carbs and see if it made any improvements. God bless you and your family
half way through the video, but i had to stop to comment, dress more professionally. As professional as we all know you are, i dont think your attire is doing you justice. nothing crazy, jeans and a polo with clean shoes will help people take you way more serious. maybe comb your hair if possible. you mean business so look it too. love your content, i appreciate you posting these so much.
I get where you are coming from but, it was 80+ degrees and I sweat like a pig. I would've been soaked if I didn't dress comfortable. I also dont ever dress outside who I am, I dont wear polos and dress shoes. BUT, I will agree that I could've definitely had a better shirt and haircut lol I also dont believe how you dress dictates how people feel about you. I never feel like people are judging me. I got praise by 2 older salesmen for being out and hustling. I dont mean to sound defensive but, I just dont agree with pretending to be something you're not. I really do appreciate not only the support but the criticism. I promise I dont mean any of this to come off as rude or arrogant.
@@lensofjared I understand you're not selling cars, but ask those salesman why they dress that way. Even if you don't believe how you dress doesn't dictate who you are as a person, I can strongly confirm that is not the belief of those you are selling your services too (i've worked as a salesman, and in hospitality) You did hit a couple homers, but I think you could have a much better success rate by making minor adjustments to your attire during these approaches. Dressing well is a form of good manners
@@lensofjared I think there's a balance that can be easily achieved. Clean shoes don't necessarily mean dress shoes, and regarding polo shirts and shorts, they make the type that are moisture wicking and designed to keep cool, like what golfers wear in the heat or even moisture wicking cargo shorts.
You have been getting more business than me but ok cold calls I have been “my name is ___ I’m a filmmaker and I’ve started a new production company. I wanted to see if you guys could use a free video to promote your business.” “Free?” “Yeah absolutely, no strings attached. Obviously i think you’ll love it and you will want to talk about doing more videos together but if you dont want to then it’s no problem.”
My advice is to wear better clothes to meetings. You will be perceived more seriously. Instead of shorts, wear long pants, instead of a torn T-shirt, wear a clean, blank T-shirt, or a polo shirt. I know it's unfair, but we still live in a time where we judge a book by its cover. Look like someone who knows what they're doing, not like a guy who just jumped off the couch after watching Netflix and forgot to get dressed. Of course, no offense, but I see that in my case people really look at how I look.
totally get this stance but, I just dont agree with it. Truth is, I dont own a polo or slacks. Its not in my personality to wear those things. I feel like a fraud trying to pretend to be something I am not. I refuse work from places that have established dress codes. I am not saying ill show like a bum but, my clothing choice doesn't define me or the work. End of the day, to my own demise sometimes, I am authentically me in every aspect. I will not be something I am not. I wear clothes that make me comfortable and confident, you will get ME in all aspects, good or bad.
I hate bark, never has agood return because some of the people on their are bots. I tried thumbtack ands thats a little better, but cold approach/DM have gotten me more clients

at some point this channel is going to be your top of funnel/lead generator , keep going
I hope! That’s part of the goal
Take it from me man I used to do a lot of "sales" before I decided either you like what I say or not... How I closed better deals was blocking the blocker. Dealerships are already hard headed and not willing to listen except for Volkswagon lol. i always have good luck with them and never get pre-answers before they ask "what is it" and be brickwalled the whole time. Hey man let's help each other out. I work with sound man so we can for sure benefit each other. Screw fees right now man let's just work together let me show you so really good stuff!
I hear you on that! I'll definitely try and find a more effective way to get in.
Thanks for the video, Jared. I appreciate you sharing your insights within the industry. On a funny note... I thought it was kind of cute that you're holding that DJI Mike to your mouth and there's a condenser mic on a boom arm behind you attached to the desk. 😂
Haha yeah the DJI mic is connected to the camera 🤣
I appreciate the honesty especially the hopes of being able to succeed to provide but not wanting to get lost in too much work or anything. And I definitely hear you on stepping up the exercise, I'm in a similar boat. Not so related to filmmaking but you should try jumproping too for exercise, it can be an even more efficient way to burn calories compared to what it'd take for jogging/running. I used to run (jog) too which is still great, but I started incorporating jumprope and it's good stuff too 💪💪
keep it up man - subbed 👏👏
May have to try this! Running has always been a good way for me to clear my head
Keep going homie!
Not stopping! 😈
13:52 about the “not waisting time” I think it is unnecessary. Apologising is sort of doing it though. There is nothing to apologise about. Be short and on point. Love your transparent and honest content man.
Copy that!
Love your videos, very inspiring!
Thank you so much!
Unfortunately I need to get better at organizing my life. It’s something I’m looking into, right now I just write down my to-do’s
When I first started, I used Bark and Thumbtak. Learn real quick that those aint it.
Yeah they’re not consistent at all
Great video man.
Good on you!! I’d be very curious to hear the success of this over the coming weeks. Keep me posted!
@@lensofjared yes boss. I will.
@@lensofjared I know, that was hilarious 😂. But your content is awesome, you are an awesome cinematographer, so I know you’re going to kill it.
I like the honesty from you, I hard agree people can sense it. For some reason, I think some people may disagree with that. I also want to get better at saying people's names out loud when I meet people to remember it.
Side note: What's the battery life like on that Osmo/Mic?
Yeah, I know my route is the average “salesman” approach but, I don’t wanna come off disingenuous.
The mic lasts all day and some, love it!
Not sure it matters in states, but that hole in the t-shirt can impact interactions where I live :D.
I love this! Gives me another angle to try.
Mark for sure It might not be worth it. Be interesting to see when you take that same budget spend and allocate it to content creation or AD spend.
Agreed, really need to push my own ads soon
the goat.
Thanks my boy
I felt the same way when I used thumbtack for a bit. Roughly 600$ spent with no actual leads
I feel that pain
Hey Jared, this is Jarrod. I always approach it with “creating content” and I try and keep the word free out and call it a favor. I think you can get much further:)
That’s a great way to approach it, I’ll try that out next time!
As someone who has worked with car dealerships in the Sherman, TX area, I can say that they do not care at all and have zero interest in hiring a freelancer to create content. I have ran into this issue on so many occasions
Yeah I’ve found that to be true. I think I’m going to cut my losses on them and just take the experience as my gain.
Going to move on to med spas
Great question and great answer!
Love the series! I’m really wanting to start recording my process but am afraid of people getting upset about being on camera etc. have you ran into that at all or has bringing a camera into these places not been a problem?
No because I don’t make it a big deal. Mannerisms is everything
Thanks for motivating me to get out there and eat some shit! Love the hustle mate.
Yessir! Sometimes we just have to go through to get to it!
I wonder if the “GM is on vacation” is a default response, I’ve heard that many times.
I say “I would like to discuss your video marketing” instead of social media
Oh that’s good wording!
Yeah “I do like social media and stuff” is a weak framing
Ahh a cliffhanger.
Haha well so far, I’ve finished and sent all the videos with no response. It’s only been a few hrs though. Hopefully that changes before next weeks episode.
Yeah man, Bark isn’t great, Not worth it at all!!
Yeah it’s very low quality
@@lensofjaredreally enjoying the journey man! Been doing this 10+ years! Let me know if I can help at all 💯
Where are you located?
@@lensofjared Ireland 🇮🇪 Meant advice or chats etc 😅
Haha I’d love too! I’ve got a lot of Irish blood in me 🤣
Volkswagen video was decent man but the wide shots of the car were wayyy too low. Next time I'd try to get a variety of angles - high, low, eye level etc. But I know that feeling when there's a ton of eyes on you in the middle of the showroom lol
Haha yeah I was little pressed for time. I’m also looking into a new gimbal that will really help with this stuff (Ronin S4)
Yeah, I was too focused on getting the shots and not focused on the angle. I’ll keep it in mind for next time.
Some suggestions Connect with producers that already have clientele and also small marketing agencies. Also what Vmount you running powering your canera?
Thanks for the suggestions!
You are doing great bro. May I suggest when you do your cold calling wear a “uniform”. Polo shirt with your logo and long pants. If you need help with personalized polos 👕 I can hook you up.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll keep that in mind.
where can go to see the final edit
Theyre not posted yet, I included the final edits without the music i used in the video.
Are you using the osmo pocket at all for the two edits you shows us? Or strictly for the BTS.
I used it in the Cadillac video but, most of it was the a7siii
1:32 Is that all made from Bark leads only or what you made in total that month?
Total in the year
What camera are you using to vlog at the dealership?
DJI Osmo 3
If I could make a suggestion, instead of saying you don't want to waste your time, try phrasing it like I appreciate that your busy so I'll be quick for you. At the end of the day, if you're genuinely coming from a place of trying to help out your clients, you being there is a service to them. Saying you appreciate your time is more positive.
That’s a good point, I’ll try that for next time!
Haha I’d love to talk to the decision makers but, it’s not always that easy
Good advice though for sure!
Even the guy that said corporate does everything is a potential customer. Talk up how you do videos of events, weddings, gender reveals, whatever. Try to get in his phone as "Video Jared", you never know.
Agreed! Definitely thought about that after the fact. He wouldn’t even give me his name haha
Are you saying high sugar and carbs are the reason or I should add that in?
@@lensofjared I'm saying they usually play a big part in causing it. Higher fat content food like avocado or meat reduce greatly the brain fog. I was shooting in a chocolate factory last week, had quite a few chocolates and my brain felt foggy for the rest of the day it was terrible. I mean the food you eat is really important, exercising as well. Due to you stopping the caffeine you might be feeling the effect a bit stronger to.
We’re pretty health conscious, I hate sugar but, I love carbs. I’ll definitely look into this more
@@lensofjared Well I hope this helps really. Maybe try for a week or 2 to avoid carbs and see if it made any improvements. God bless you and your family
Thank you! I definitely will! God bless you as well 🤙🏼🖤
That Bark app probably has fake leads. That’s how they make money
Definitely feels like that. Idk how many go straight to voicemail
hey jared where can i check the work u did for those car dealerships ?
I never posted them anywhere, dm ME on IG and I can send them
Hey jared i did dm u but no reply
half way through the video, but i had to stop to comment, dress more professionally.
BUT, I will agree that I could've definitely had a better shirt and haircut lol
I also dont believe how you dress dictates how people feel about you.
What if instead of “I don’t want to waste your time” you said “I won’t waste your time”?
You have been getting more business than me but ok cold calls I have been
“my name is ___ I’m a filmmaker and I’ve started a new production company. I wanted to see if you guys could use a free video to promote your business.”
“Free?”
“Yeah absolutely, no strings attached. Obviously i think you’ll love it and you will want to talk about doing more videos together but if you dont want to then it’s no problem.”
I like this!
So the GSM started at not knowing anything to knowing the name of the company.
Right?! 🤣
100% agree with this sentiment
Love the videos brotha they have really inspired me! Had a question for you. I’m a dad as well, and I was wondering how you balance this type of work and your home life? 🫡🙌🏻
It takes work with my wife, there are some days you just have to put in extra hours. I really try my best to not work when my son is home but, sometimes it cant be helped.
@ thanks for getting back to me! You’ve really inspired me!!
