      Robin's washboard is so 'musical' ... he has mastered it,; and yet,talking with him, it seems he is still pouring over other bands and genres to glean a fresh riff or approach. He's also a great guy - friendly and straight forward .. I feel lucky to know him a bit.

    A huge crowd of over 450 welcomed this amazing band, applauded lustily after each number - and often for solo phrases, and roared to call them back for an encore after the second set !!! The venue is the Commodore Barry Club in the Mt. Airy neighborhood. They are wonderful people too. Kudos to John here and the Philadelphia Unemployment Project for making this happen.

    These guys are really quite enjoyable to listen too. Not my usual diet of music, but I do diverge once in a while. The clarinet player for some reason reminds me of Huckleberry Hound. (Gives my age bracket away) I mean that most respectfully BTW. Not a knock.

      Shaye Cohn, cornet, Erika Lewis, vocals and bass drum, Craig Flory, clarinet, Barnabus Jones, trombone, Greg Sherman, guitar and vocals, Max Bien-Kahn, guitar, banjo, Todd Burdick, Tuba, Sousaphone, Robin Rapuzzi, washboard.

    • @87sailorgirl
      @87sailorgirl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not so much changes actually. The 'core five' have been together ten years - Shaye, Barnabus, Todd, Erika & Robin. The other four, Max, Jason & Greg on strings, Craig on clarinet, go back five to eight years. For a jazz band, that is remarkable stability and accounts a good bit for how tight and versatile they are. They generally take just two strings on tour. It is true that Charlie Halloran sits in for Barnabus several times a year, and Ewan Bleach comes over the pond to join or sit in on reeds once or twice a year, and Thomas Majerski also subs on reeds (sometimes on sax to fill the 'warm tone' slot when Barnabus isn't there. Other than those, there a just an occasional visit from players from their first few years and friends passing through.

    ..... I've asked before .... no replys to my questions .....about the band ...... how old is each member? .... what was each doing before moving to N.O. ? .... do they use work visas for foreign gigs? ...
    ... ( they better) ....does each band member have a tax number with the state of Louisiana? (probably should) .... How old is Tupelo? ...
    what's his history? I suspect Shaye
    has ' perfect pitch' ..... does she?
    ... any other band members have relative/perfect pitch? ..... how do they handle copyright issues on their recordings ( for non public domain titles)? .... how do they choose which new songs to play/
    record? ..... . Busking in general .... no band seems to use a flugelhorn in street gigs in N.O. ... what's the deal with that? Flugelhorn was very common in early 20th century brass bands and jazz ensembles ...
    ...more questions later .....🤔

      I can't answer the business questions (and wouldn't ask them), but they have traveled widely and must know the ropes. They are all "thirty somethings" except Craig Flory, clarinet (50ish)... well Barnabus, trombone, may have turned 40. Tupelo was Barnabus' dog and sadly died while they were touring in France last month. 11-12-13 years ago Shaye, Barnabus, Todd & Erika were busking in string bands; they all still play two or more string instruments. After Hurricane Katrina clobbered New Orleans there were 'swamp instruments' where they were renting .. Shaye & Barnabus took a cornet and taught themselves to play and Todd took up the tuba. Tuba Skinny was formed in early 2009; Robin came to N.O. later that year. Those core five have played together 10 years; others joined 6 - 8 years ago. There are articles in OffBeat & Syncopated times - here are a couple
