My group's campaign world has a country that was devastated by a shadow infestation hundreds of years ago. It became a "lifeless" basin and eventually rejoined the political world as a nation of undead and golems who demanded the sovereignty it once held.

I heard of old Eastern European folklore where vampires didn't begin as corporeals, but instead as spirits akin to shadows, then a hovering mass of blood (vampiric mist?), and then as true vampyres. Maybe they are the ones that run this land now, and are only supplied fresh meat through a treaty to make them a penal colony (like Australia but without the sun and Waltzing Matilda).

I threw a "deck of many things" at my lv 3 party (because I'm a madman). One of them got Throne; I made the Keep they inherited a haunted lighthouse. They had to free the spirits of 2 ghosts, fight a bunch of animated armor (a classic), explored a laboratory, a haunted library, and then had to fight a banshee on a cloudy day at the top of the lighthouse. Then to top it all off, there was a red dragon wyrmling on the roof; it was slain, which will kindle a much larger plot thread.... muahahahaha! ANGRY MOMMA DRAGON

in one of my first games ever, we encountered 2 wraiths (a deadly encounter for our party). only I (a devotion paladin) and the sorcerer survived by pure luck. it was definitely scary and it didn't help that our DM let the deceased players control their specters. (5e btw.)
point is, amazing opponents for low-level parties, very memorable.

Funny story, two weeks ago, the exact situation happened where it quickly got out of hand. Four of us, level 3, went into a room with three wights. I casted Protection from Evil and Good on myself (abjurer wizard mountain dwarf), and still got hit. I failed by Constitution saving throw, taking my 23 hit points and 8 temporary hit points all the way down to zero. Because of the failed save, my maximum hp I could have would be like -3. Even if I passed my death saving throws, my character would have died. Another character also died from it, the other two characters had their max hp drop to 1 and 4, respectively.
    Rest easy, Elric

You really touched the things that makes many of the incorporeal undead so dangerous: Life Drain, Incorporeal Movement, and their ability to multiply. Whereas the "zombie apocalypse" of modern pop culture can be stopped by a door, Wraiths, Spectres and Shadows are not. They essentially ignore the map. In doing so, they bring the risk of not only ending a party member without warning, but attacking in a full 360 degrees (from through ceilings, floors, walls, etc.)...and perhaps making more of themselves in the process.
Even some corporeal undead share some of these features. Wights also have a Life Drain, and then create Zombies from the slain. That, in of itself, would be a nightmare to deal with even without the ghost-like undead.
To be honest, it's a wonder any fantasy world with a SINGLE Shadow, Spectre, or Wight isn't overrun in other Shadows, Spectres and Zombies. Like a disease, they do not sleep or rest, and have no understanding of borders or rules. They just destroy everything in the path to make more of themselves. Horrifying.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I tend to think that the presence of even a single Shadow or Wraith would be a BIG DEAL. Something like Orcus, or even a Shadow Dragon, creating hordes of the incorporeal undead? Time to kiss that world goodbye expect for the high-level characters who can escape or keep their immediate environs safe.

I'm playing through my first campaign and one of the first things we ran into was about 5 shadows. We're playing on Roll20 so we saw that they sapped strength and it freaked us out. Unfortunately, our group had about 3 people with negative strength modifiers AND our cleric's spells were on the fritz so we had to rely on halved damage and two uses of divine smite. We did pretty well, but I think creatures that target stats are the most frightening.

I think the origins of spectres are particularly terrifying. It is not just death, but having ones' soul stripped of purpose, identity, sanity and the ability to cross over, and being condemned to roam the dark places of the material plane where its only purpose is to inflict its agony on others and create more of its kind.
Destroying a spectre would be an act of mercy, as you are freeing it from its horrid existence.

This gives me ideas for a resurgence of my first campaign. There was a shadow already in the dungeon that the party ignored and ran from. Then a 2nd party had an insane guy who basically turned into Sweeney Todd in that dungeon and slaughtered the town's folk. I think I may have the shadows spread soon for my current party to lay to rest and resolve from the past.

(Sorry for commenting again, an idea struck me)
Wouldn't a battlefield be littered with ghosts? I'm kind of thinking like in the Witcher 3 when you stumble into a battlefield and it's infested with ghouls and the like.
I've now got the idea of a Necromancer BBEG trying to cause a war to feed his army of undead or to capture and twist existing undead to his will...

    • @jimdavis141

Ghosts, specters, and revenants definitely. Ghouls as well. I'd imagine there are elaborate societal customs/rules surrounding what to do with a battlefield after the fighting has stopped. Local priest and clerics of all sorts, but especially War and Death, might arrive to make sure the angry dead don't arise. Funeral rites must be performed to put the spirits at ease, guards posted to ensure ghouls don't show up, and locals arriving to help dig mass graves. This is on top of the usual dangers associated with battlefields - unscrupulous looters, disease, environmental damage, and deserters. In places with endemic warfare, the undead might become a problem very quickly (much like Velen).

Funny how Will o' Wisps were said to intentionally lure travelers to their deaths, into bogs or cliffs and such. Turns out, it's just deceased spirits who died the same way, repeating an endless cycle of "Whoops, wrong way...dead".
Imagine just a massive cloud of Will o' Wisps building up over time, because nobody was watching their step. And because the cloud keeps getting bigger, more and more people come to see what it is.
    Not a bad sidequest.

    Thought you'd like some ideas.
I like listening to them while playing other games.
or listening to DnD vids in general.
A question comes to mind to me while listening to this video...
How long should time pass before this (ghost variant) manifests?
They speak in the video as though if commoner/person dies (x) way, they spawn that ghost.
But it sorta just feels 'weird' to me... As if 24 hours should pass atleast, or it'll spawn at night.
Afterall, lets say your party is hot on the trail of that necromancer who is murdering village after villager in a specific manner to create them ghost types.
They arrive to a freshly destroyed village. they decide to rest for the night
it was eerie, and quiet, a dense fog rolls in.
Thats when the ghost start to rise from the place of the corpses.
A possible furious storm of undead wails would be in the most densely populated area of where they died, town hall, or inside homes, etc.
This could bring up a few intresting ideas to my mind...
1: party now has to deal with a "ghost" (im referring to ALL of them as ghosts, easier for typing) infested town, putting them all to rest.
2: party clears out their surrounding area, and then rests /or/ party clears path out of town and leaves immidiately.
3: Party stays within their home, no ghosts happened to die or spawn inside where they rest. They may have to do saving throws from hearing the ghostly wails all night long.
Possibly a saving through for 'maddness' and for 'no rest' (afterall, some party members may just find it to diffacult to sleep with all the noise out there)
but yeah, there is my own personal ideas from this video to toss at you. c:

I tend to disagree :P -Ghosts possess people and turn your party on themselves- You do mention this later in the video heh.. Guess I should watch the whole thing first before commenting >:3 One guy in my group TPK'd his own party because he was possessed and not enough WIS to free himself from it lol (Killed everyone and then killed himself).
Speaking of earlier editions of the game. I miss spec'd Enervation Sorcerers. ya know by level 17 if you've taken the right feats you'd be draining 6 levels with each casting (Maximized + Empowered spell) and with great enough spell penetration (and no save on the spell) ya know, you're f***in sh*t up. Should also compliment with Bestow Curse hehehe...

I personally go the supernatural route where you have to find and destroy the body if you don't have a magic weapon and you can use salt to exorcize them and keep them at bay and iron can use to banish them for a little while

So I was running a game of Out of the Abyss and they were in Blingdenstone. They had to take out a specter and it was a boring encounter, so I tried poltergeist, but it felt like oh, its just invisible.
so I ran a Poltergeist/Supernatural type of ghost. I had it attached to it's corpse that had to be destroyed, and it was hidden, and until it was, anything within its range (I gave it the whole house it lived in) it could just throw things and people and do all ghost stuff, and had a vortex That would grab debris and throw it around, meaning a dex save at the start of each turn or take damage and get knocked prone.

I now this is an old video... but shadows aren't undead "spirits" like ghosts, specters, poltergeister, wraiths and so on, which are humanoid creatures' unresting spirits. Shadows are the literal shadow of such creatures come to life. They are more like nightshades (e. g. Nightwalkers) and lack the Incorporeal Movement trait which all of the "spirit" type creatures have. In fact, a humanoid can be raised from the dead even if its shadow has become an undead shadow. So I wouldn't put them in the same category.

I haven't seen the video, but I experienced some of the fallout from the D&D hysteria as a teenager. My parents didn't want me playing D&D because of its reputation. Instead I started playing Warhammer (hardly any better from a demonic imagery standpoint) and WEG Star Wars. D&D came much later for me, namely when I could drive myself to the store and buy books with my own money.

oh cool. So I was DMing my campaign and my players were keeping a kingdom safe while buying supplies and other random stuff they get into. While they did that my big bad boy lich sent out shadows to destroy the kingdom on the inside to weaken defences for an easy take over. The changling wizard was the first to see them in person as he witnessed a shadow hanging over the dead body of a commoner in a back ally. They tried their best and I kept track of the numbers and it eventually got really noticeable that the druids and dryads started to notice a few wandering their forests nearby the kingdom. So of course the npcs got really concerned and now complaints are coming through to the king. eventually the party finds out that one of the commoners went bad $%&# crazy and was summoning more in the name of the lich. They took him down easily and ended up killing him. but it was too late.... the liches army was moving towards the kingdom and with its resources low from the shadow attacks, what was ment to be a fight to defend was a fight for survival. the party would have died if it weren't for the wizard and cleric....
PS: this was my 1st campaign I created and was learning how cr worked... after this I would be called a war gm, even now I still have this title and im working on trying to fix that with the campaign im currently DMing.

  • @Alefiend

There's a word for this: Shadowpocalypse. It turns up on forums all the time as an example of how D&D doesn't work-if shadows exist, worlds die.

    • @jimdavis141
      @jimdavis141 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's been a concept I've dwelled on since I first saw someone work out the math for long it would take in 3e for shadows to take over. That was about 10 years ago or so, maybe longer.

    • @Azetchki
      @Azetchki 7 ปีที่แล้ว

But you must not forget that D&D is also a world in which fifth level clerics (in 5 ed) can destroy Shadows with their Turn Undead. But yeah, if their is no priest around, the situation will get out of hand really quickly.

    • @jimdavis141
      @jimdavis141 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My distribution of the classes and levels in a typical D&D world tends towards the low end of 3e's world-building mechanics. Yes, a 5th level cleric can handle a minor shadow infestation in multiple ways, but how many 5th+ level clerics are there in the world? 50? 1000? In my homebrew world, most NPCs top out at 8-10 level. Other worlds routinely have epic-level NPCs moving about the world. Most of these questions aren't usually relevant to the game, but they are fun to think about.

I believe Ghosts are typically tragic. 'Unjust' deaths is typically for Revenants (which are corporeal), while the other incorporeal undead are typically created from violent deaths (some of them specifically from the deaths of evil creatures) and/or being killed by another undead creature - is that what you meant by 'unjust?'

In my campaign I have a disease called The Rot. It slowly destroys a persons constitution, and when they die, I roll a d20, and depending on the roll, they come back as a certain kind of Undead. Shadows are the most prominent outcome, and it was glorious to see the look on the Barbarians face when the person he just cut in half came back as a shadow and took down its strength from 20, to 16, in one hit.
