This footage shows what industrial scale intensive pig farming looks like and hopefully raises deeper conversations about how we treat animals and our environment.

This is very Grim Footage, Geoff. Good on you for bravely sharing these stories. As people we need to know how are choices are interlinked with this type of activity. We have to confront the reality of this way we treat animals in industrial scale agriculture. At the end of the day people choose to eat these products or choose not to. Your work is so important, Geoff, to help us make the right choices. With 8 Billion plus people on the planet today, we have to question what essentially qualifies as food and what is a frivolous luxury, the consumption of which is facilitated by corporations marketing falsehoods, lies. As far a pig farms go this looks pretty good. Disasters can happen occasionally on farms and its never in the farmers best interest for that to happen.
The pigs shown look very clean and healthy. The breeding sows outside in the huts is so much better than the farrowing crates.
Scarey music and one worker's overhyped edited comments shows a very one-sided report.
This is a huge improvement from fully enclosed piggeries. Where you have livestock you've got dead stock. That's farming.
Agreed this farm is better than enclosed. Yet it's still making most people uncomfortable to see what goes on in an industrial scale operation. This is a part of the farm that most people will never witness. Disasters happen more often when farms grow to this scale.

when you overcrowd stock to maximise profits the deaths go up from stress, that is the truth of it.. No need for such intensive practices in NZ.

I understand and agree that was horrendous, but it begs the question still, next time you are buying pork at the supermarket, how many of us are checking the cost per kg?

The standards in farm animal welfare are significantly higher in NZ than they are in Canada. This farm has a lot of pigs on it, but they have straw bedding, have access to the outdoors, and can interact with each other. Not to mention that the pigs all have their little curvy tails (so no tail docking, as I can see). Tail docking is common industry practice in Canadian industrial farms. In Canada, such a farm would be considered organic and of very high welfare standards.
I'm sorry to hear this. Things must be terrible in Canada. Do you think by comparison it makes it ok? The pollution leeching through the land is a huge problem here. Also can't be organic if they're feed not organic foods

These people have timed the filming to perfection once again , waiting till the snow is rite down to the flats , wouldn’t mind betting the snow has just melted to capture the farm at it’s worst to give viewers the impression that it’s a bog all year round much like they do with the dairy farms , just BS . People need food it’s that simple, all this idealogy sweeping the globe is like a cancer & it’s failing at a catastrophic rate one only has to look at what’s happened in Sri Lanka the people are starving because they banned synthetic fertiliser .

Well why don’t you explain that better in your vids , for example you could “highlight “ that for 10+ months of the year farming practices are fine , perhaps make the odd summer time vid when the grass grows & suns out to show them that it’s not a bog for 12 months of the year & it’s only maybe 2 months of the year (if it’s been wet or some extreme weather event has occurred) your concerned about , because if you only film after lots & lots of rain & snow all the time people would assume animals live in mud 12 months of the year , people like you & I know it’s not like that all the time , but the views don’t…I find that very miss leading & I do like Nz grown pork it’s very tasty…oh for some salted crackle , I would hate to see pig farmers forced out of farming only to have a substandard product imported with very questionable animal rites regulations , perhaps you could travel to Poland then skip over to Ukraine & film the pig farmers there for a comparison.

According to the world animal rites index Nz is number 1 , we along with 3 other countries are in first place , let that sink in for a moment.
By my count that farm has over 100 sheds to shelter the pigs & they look to be in great condition . You have chosen to show case the farm at the wettest time of the year.
So to answer your question I’m going to say no , with the country in the position it is in & a world food crisis looming I say let the farmers get on with doing what they do best , the country supplies what forty or fifty million people with food ? ,I bet Sri Lanka could do with some ? , did ya know Geoff they banned synthetic fertiliser & now the country is bankrupt & starving , bet they would love some of that pork , I don’t believe people like you will ever be happy until we are all vegans .
@@GeoffReidNZ if you have suggestions on ways to improve which science agrees with then give them. In my experience vegan extremists don't want the industry to improve, they just want it gone.
It's a fact that industrial farming produces cheaper food. Whether those cost savings are passed on to you is debatable but market forces say they probably are. Ultimately one must ask are you prepared to pay more for your food in order to stop industrial farming and the extra costs involved to advert their environmental impact. On top of this is govt money printing inflating away the store of value of your hard-earned labour. This is also causing food prices to rise. Then we have what we see now with the farmer protests in the Netherlands (coming to a town near you in NZ) debatable climate change goals imposing a very heavy cost burden. I'm not saying do nothing. I'm saying be aware of the of the causes and consequences.
The only real solution is human population control

Vegan sanctuaries often go bankrupt and animals suffer when they run out of money and cannot afford medical treatment nor food. Give money to proper sanctuaries, not vegans wanting to feel good ones.
Do you also have pet food facilities there? Because here in good ol “Tyson Country” the “farm dead” resulting from frequent culling for defects and diseases plus gang violence amongst the poultry is sent to a nearby protein plant that processes those putrid corpses plus everything else from the regular surrounding processing plants that doesn’t end up on the dinner table.
It all becomes what I call “Soylent Brown” aka poultry meal plus feather meal and the ultra disgusting blood meal shipped to major pet food facilities as a main ingredient for their products. Even Charlton Heston does not approve…

Who is in charge of seeing to the amount of pig meat is actually sold to consumers, how much wastage is there from the supermarket’s ect?
What are the standards to gain a welfare tick and approval from the SPCA?
I’m not a vegan or vegetarian and won’t ever be by free choice but I believe that farms for meat should be smaller and the amount of meat that is consumed is in this country can be far less.

@@GeoffReidNZ yea mate completely, there was a couple of sick animals, and a lot of the examples given by the lady we’re human error and accidents not maltreatment. I’ve got two very loved dogs, doesn’t mean they don’t get sick or ill. Same with humans, it’s part of life. The production here is a lot better than other pars of the world were our imported meat comes from.

Yes it would drive the price of pig flesh up... thats fine.. put tariffs on inported flesh to match it so we dont push the problems somewhere else. And extra high tariffs in imported flesh from countries that can verify high aw or enviro standerds are met. Win win?

From there you then have a position to demand higher standards in NZ. What specifically do you have a problem with the farming operation you videoed?
This is bad. The scale of it affects the animals and the land. I've been on the land for 45 years and have seen attitudes to animal welfare and care for the land improve. Most people involved with animals do care, even though they don't always get it right. Factory farming is several steps beyond that. It is gross and cruel and because it is all about numbers the animals will never come first. SPCA approved eh? why am I not surprised. Good work Geoff, this needs to stop.

@@GeoffReidNZ that is cage farming, vegans also call barn farming factory farming. Factory farming is not a term used by farmers, it is commonly used by vegans which is why it can appear in dictionaries. You would think they would at least know what it means.

Greetings from North Carolina in the US. We have a town called Smithfield where there is a large industrial pork factory. Look into it. Its sickening as well. Keep up the good fight. Enough voices will be heard. Smithfield is so large they justbuy their way through the Govt.

This is already as decent as a pig's life can be already. Far far better than so many other farmed animals raised in other parts of the world. I would call this "going out of way to alleviate the suffering of them".

@Geoff Reid NZ your claim the river is getting trashed and terrible smell is false. The river is called the Hurunui and it is a beautiful river as it meanders out of the mountains and across the plains. It did have high EColi counts at one stage and some people were blaming the pig farm and neighbouring dairy farms. DNA testing by the local authorities proved it was a native bird seagull colony on the river so the local council in conjunction with the Conservation Department poisoned the birds because they predate on a lot of the less common native birds. In summer locals swim and fish in the river and some drink straight out of the river. I have lived next to this river all my life and you are showing a huge amount of disrespect to our river by making sensationalist claims.
Unfortunately the river quality is still bad, we use to stay at balmoral camp ground but haven't for the last couple of years as there is signs up from ecan saying it's unsafe to swim.
@@haydennicol7826 Two things. The signs were because of the EColi triggering the warning level. They found the EColi contamination was from the seagull colony 1 kilometre above the swimming site. The other tests they were doing came from a stagnant stream coming out of the Balmoral forest at that time that the swimming hole was disconnected from the river when floods changed its course. The authorities admitted they were using this incorrectly to portray the Hurunui River. None of that was to do with farming. The signs are a trigger requirement and not reliable. Using commonsense many locals still swim in the river and some even drink it.

Geoff said nothing about the river in the video or in the description other than saying the farm is beside the river.
No mention of ecoli was made.

Balderdash. These intense farming enterprises have one thing in mind.. MAXIMUM PROFIT. with little or no regard for the surrounding nature or animal welfare except to the point where it might threaten their profit. I'm an avid gold prospector and bushland trekker and I support decent sustainable mining, agriculture and manufacturing etc but I see the same thing here in Australia where vast amounts of forest are bulldozed to shove on as many head of cattle as possible with massive displacement and injury to koala bear, bird life and other mammals as well as huge amounts of erosion and sediment runoff.
The logging industry in Tasmania just clear fell everything in sight and leave over 90% of beautiful millable timber to rot.
My grandfather, father and uncle were old time sheep graziers and were never greedy and always said you have to look after the land that looks after you.

The video showed mostly extreme circumstances.. weather events etc... most farmers do gaf about their animals. all my experiences with farmers in the south island.. animal welfare is the first priority. animals killed in extreme circumstances sucks... the farmers will feel the loss of life and pain intently.. they are good people, they lose sleep when stuff like this happens. I bet they were out in the middle of the night trying to do what they could but it was too much. Farming animala is important for NZ peoples health and well being. The farmers for the most part are excellent at handling their livestock as humanely as they possibly can to it being a point of pride...

I dont think farmer bashing is helpful either this is why I never call out individuals as it is the intensity of the system that are causing harm to people, animals and the environment.
I do hear a lot of some farmers saying they love their animals... This is good but it does make one wonder; when does the mourning for their lives end? When they're put on the truck for slaughter, when the truck leaves the gate or when they are at the pub with their mates drinking their profits? 🤔

@@coffeemoth665 hey bro! actually the "however" in my statement separates the two assertions I wanted to make. "Didn't look too bad to me" was comparing the footage to caged animal farms. The drowned pigs becoming food was fearing the carcasses of the sadly drowned animals were then sold to supermarket wholesalers as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred. The "not too bad even though they drowned" isn't what I m saying at all. Btw I would never drown, I'm a really strong swimmer

What you get with this video is very selective designed to maximize the shock factor. Viewers should view it with that in mind. Much was not mentioned. This area had masses amount of rainfall in the last 2 months. At huge expense the paddocks are being recontoured to improve the conditions, create more space and a tree planting programme for shade. The claim that the compost area drains into streams and into the river is false. The claims about accidents such as water not working happens with all types of animals even pets. Nothing is 100% foolproof. This style of video will be very hurtful to the many good people that work at this farm. Why didn't you go and talk to the owners and learn the full story. You haven't answered the question about getting drone footage in private property. Anyone watching this should think about how they would feel if someone droned them undertaking activities in their backyard. Yes standards definitely can improve but these sorts of videos ignore the huge amount of great work farmers are now doing for the betterment of the environment and animals.
I agree ,I didn't think the video showed disgusting conditions at all , for the most part the pigs appeared to be well-fed and clean. I think it's very misleading to film when, going by the amount of water lying in the paddocks, Canterbury has had a huge amount of rain in a very short period. I'm sure you waited on this weather advent & rushed out to the farm to film ,shame on you sir!
People must be aware of the routeen neglect that occurs when operations of this size go unchecked.
Talking to farmers that only see dollar signs is not the best use of time. Rain happens.. shouldnt be a suprise. Farming tens of thousands of mammals on leechy stoney river bed is a recipe for groundwater contamination and poor river health.
These farmers have many opportunities and platforms to tell their stories (lies). Its call greenwashing marketing and the best way to demand better practice is to tell the truth to the people. Regional council are filled with farmers... so how can we trust that the regulators are doing their jobs? The rural advocacy network sounds like a group set up to defend, deny and deflect any changes to status quo $$$.
A few trees being planted for shade?? A few decades on and millions of pigs later.. wow. They fit 1000 into those barns you know. They only get shade.

Obviously you haven't talked to the farmers with your (incorrect) assumption they only see dollar signs. 4 of the 14 regional council are farmers, hardly filled with farmers. Basing an understanding of an organization on how its name sounds - is that how you draw conclusions? Your false claims and misrepresentations meet the definition of greenwashing marketing - of a different shade. I take the attitude that for now at least animal farming is here to stay so lets get working with the farmers to improve the environment right now as time is of the essence.
There are many issues with what you say, the biggest ine being higher animal welfare standards are not at all sustainable financially or especially environmentally. We are already in a climate crisis largely because of animal agriculture, if we move to less efficient strategies to kill billions of animals per year, we will rocket towards the tipping point. that's the word I don't like in this context "efficient" why should we have the right (regardless of environmental issues) to efficiently kill billions of innocent animals who did nothing wrong. In summary there is no sustainable way of mass murdering animals and the only option is to switch to a plant based food system, we have a choice, keep animals in horrible conditions and eventually die out as a species, keep animals in better conditions and we largely die out faster, or the best option, the only option would be for people such as you to stop green-washing, to stop lobbying and let people know the truth, we are dying and you are hiding that from people. shame on you.

I don't see where the problem is? Apparently, once they grow big they run out of space. But there is no footage or evidence of this. On the contrary, the footage in closing shows a lot of space. There were examples of several accidents taking place. Not abuse. If incidents are not reported etc and not rectified then yes major issue. But no evidence was offered. Struggling to see the issue here beyond the video's dramatically loud music.

Doubt the land owners knew about the drone flying on there property, not that I support bad practice farming ill make that clear. But many of you who won't acknowledge human error or unexpected mounts of rain should dig a bit deeper instead of watching a 5 minute video of again most likely illegal drone flying about the only thing that looks bad in this video is the pigs in the trailer but shock to some pigs die from all sorts of things. How else do they get rid of them full grown pig could weigh 200kg plus. Maybe just food for thought me personally not going to stop eating them. Sorry to those this may offend, we are allowed our own opinions are we not?

Human error and unexpected amounts of rain is no excuse for bad practice (poor planning, not farming to the conditions, harm).
It is my belief that Mud farming indefensible and so is this level of pollution.

It's winter and it rains how is that bad practice? Again human error of not tightening a bolt up is not bad practice. The scale of this farm brings into question the amount of pollution flowing off it and into the groundwater. The size of the compost and dead pig pile is MASSIVE and will be leeching Nitrates into the river. Anyone ask the public if they could pollute the river?
