I love this video for your face at the climax… when it hits at 4:33 you are feeling what everyone feels at that point in the song! This is the magic of Cocteau Twins, and you will no doubt love the rest of their work!
@@gabe.absolute I waited to see your reaction to the final minute of this song and it did not disappoint. I wish I could hear it for the first time. My favorite outro of any song anywhere.
@4:20 ... that snake-in-the-grass tension that bites you in the heart once it lets the climax rain down around you. I've cried to this part two times in my life. I'll never forget where I was the first time (Macon, GA, after dropping a friend off at work who asked me to pick her up for lunch to ride around and get high). Once she was outta the car, I turned the radio back up and this was the first time I heard this fkn sizzle and shimmer around me. Rode down Riverside Drive SLATHERED in sonic ecstasy and (through gibberish lyrics that seemed to say it all ) my every agony. The second time? The second time was then I got drunk and relived that memory a few years after that same friend died. I was taken back to that very afternoon and ... well, shit. I guess I gotta revise this. This listen makes three times. Huh. Robin, I love you.
Its an emotional experience for sure. An emotional roller coaster they take you on. She promises you flying of yet takes you down into the underground, yet you can fly there as well... i recommend pandora
Cheers Mate, I had goosebumbs the whole video, watching you feeling and enjoying this very unique and special song. I know that band only cause my father listens to it and it's kinda rare that dudes in our young age feeling it the same way as people from that generation. Gotta show this video to my dad, he's gonna be so proud of it😅 Keep it going❤
Wow thank you so much for this lovely comment. Made my day. Thank you for all the kind words and for taking the time to watch my reaction. Definitely will keep going. Much love
give some of the songs from victorialand a go like oomingmak, whales tails, fluffy tufts, feet like fins or songs from bbk such as athol brose or cico buff, suckling the mender, all just beautiful tracks that need to be more known, although if your looking for more of a punchier sound there's persephone,(treasure),kookaburra(aikea guinea),because of whirl jack(sunburst and snow blind), in our angelhood( head over heels), feather oar blades(lullabies, an early EP 1982/3) when mama was moth(head over heals) all these showed they could push the noise. try muesette and drums(head over heels) for a manic full on blast, or go for a very laid back collaboration with harold budd on the tracks- ooze out and away onehow, she will destroy you( the moon and the melodies). they have a song for any mood really.. try plain tiger, sultitan itan, pink orange red, sigh's smell of farewell, could just be the thing to lift you too, no joke, take the day off and play, you'll be delighted. each is different, each is worth finding. good luck.
Great songs.. There's no bad ones from Cocteau Twins really. It's like being high but it's the music that's the drug or as Bryan Ferry once said, "Love is the Drug".
I love how animated you are!. I don't have the 1984 EP from which this song was taken, but I have the compilation album 'The Pink Opaque' (1986) on which this is the lead track. It's a fantastic album for anyone who wants to hear a selection of the Cocteau's songs from their early career. It's very thoughtfully compiled and the songs flow together well, more like a proper album than a compilation. The Pink Opaque was the Cocteau's official introduction to the USA since the record company decided not to publish all their previous work over there first (3 albums and 7 EP's)
This made me curious; so I just read the track listing of Pink Opaque, and it apparently contains the entire Spangle Maker EP, but the Pearly Dewdrops Drops on Pink Opaque is the 7" version instead of the 12" version. In my opinion, you need to get the 12" version, but anyone with Pink Opaque essentially has the Spangle Maker 12" EP.
16 Days/Gathering Dust by This Mortal Coil (1983). This was a cover version of a Modern English song with a couple of the other guys from Modern English (Michael Conroy and Gary MacDowell), Cindy Talk (Gordon Sharp), Robin Guthrie and Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins). It was an Ivo Watts Russell project under the 4AD label back when there were interesting acts in the music biz. This was a maxi single just prior to 1984's It'll End In Tears album, followed by Filigree & Shadow in 1986, and lastly - Blood in 1990. This was about as underground as one could get with music during this time. Additionally, maybe check out Sisters of Mercy, Wire, Wolfgang Press, Chris and Cosey, Fad Gadget, X, Swans, Angels of Light, Gene Loves Jezebel, David Sylvian, Wall of Voodoo, Stereolab, Cabaret Voltaire, Dead Kennedys, X-mal Deutschland, Kraftwerk, etc..
Hi Gabe, just came across your channel and instantly subscribed. Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, Tori...warms my heart to see your reactions to this amazing music. And you really feel it. For more Cocteau Twins try Aikea Guinea, Pink Orange Red, Carolyn's Fingers, Heaven or Las Vegas...to be honest you can dip in anywhere in their catalogue and find treasure. You can also try Teardrop by Massive Attack which has Liz on vocals...really beautiful song. Happy listening!!
Spangle Maker is their very first song that I listened to. Imagine the shock! You should try Alice, which is one of their last songs, and is featured in the movie Lovely Bones.
You might enjoy a band called 'This Mortal Coil' if you like these vocals. Massive Attack's 'Teardrop', too. Thanks for taking me back to my first listen, so many years ago.. powerful and provoking music.
Hi, my ‘best of’ Cocteau fictional album: Aloysius, The thinner the air, Kookaburra, Those Eyes That Mouth, Mizake The Mizan, Wolf in the Breast, Frou-Frou Foxes in midsummer fires, Cico Buff, A kissed out red floatboat , Tishbite, Ups. Should get you beating your chest and raising them hands!
For real. The obvious next move is to hear the 12" version ofPearly Dewdrops Drops. Spangle Maker was always released with some version of Pearly Dewdrops Drops. The only thing good about the compact disc era is that you could hear those two songs consecutively without having to flip the record over.
Exactly. If i was introducing someone to CT i think its ok to go with the most iconic tracks. Pearly, yes, Heaven or Las Vegas, Cherry Coloured Funk, Pandora, Crushed, Loves Easy Tears, Carolyns Fingers, etc
the ending of this song always gets me
Right!!

Great reaction man you really felt the vibe well.
Thank you 😊
This is an early song, there is so much treasure ahead. Nice reaction sir.
Thank you 😊 can't wait
I second that!! It is a whole journey without any waste, from their debut to their final album, no 2 albums are equal, and they are all great!!
For really early, there is the bleak menacing stuff on Garlands.
4:32 that part is the best. goosebumps!
Thank you 😊

The Spangle Maker for me was the PERFECT song for being an angry teenager...
Love it
One of my favorites!
Right! Love this one

I used drink wine with my wife talk and listen to this record. We lived in NYC then. Mid 90's punks being adults
That's awesome. Thank you for sharing that
All I can say and all I can suggest is in color....pink/orange/red ...a must listen..pure art in it's own arena...
Thanks 😁
Gabe, I've got so many things to suggest, both Cocteau Twins and various others!
Noted! and the more the better. Absolutely love all the suggestions. Keep them coming PLZ

If you like this song, you will love 'Donimo' from their album 'Treasures.'
Thank you. Can't wait
I waited to get home so I could send you this recommendation: "Peppermint Pig" by Cocteau Twins. It's a real marvel of a B-side gem 💎
Thank you
You're welcome! 👍
Peppermint Pig ep came out the day I was born. One of the best tracks by one of my all time favorite bands, on my birthday??? What are the chances?
!
Autosubscribe for picking Spangle Maker. I’ve listened to it 100s of times, Carolyn’s Fingers too
WOW!! thank you so much. You've made my day
Cocteau twins addiction is a serious problem , you end up listening to Lord of the rings soundtrack for your Liz fraser hit.lol
Love it
Oh yeah, only Simon Raymonde phoned me yesterday morning!!!??? WTAF.
Thank you so much for watching
