Same here, but in the opposite order! I used to only conventional fish and I decided to pick up fly fishing since my dad fly fishes. I started to really enjoy tying flies and everything. But then when you get to go out and catch trout on topwater baits, that’s what really sold me!

I like that I can over sleep and still get there on time. I like that I can catch my targeted species almost every time. I like that I can catch on anything that just looks buggy instead of trying to figure out if (I) the fish prefer white, black, green or blue. Etc.
What I do not like about fly fishing is others pretending there is some that believe there is some higher scientific purpose in getting a fish to bite, when their brains are the size of an almond. It only requires a person to show up and try. This is the reason I appreciate Ben. The hugest fisherman! Thank you for your incite and videos, you really are fun to watch

We mostly just have Northern Pike up here in Saskatchewan... they’re super mean little cruds so you need to hook them hard but I will think over the use of treble hooks... or at least crush the barb on them...
as far as I’m concerned, if you are outdoors and away from people (or with 1or 2 good people worth spending your precious fishing time with) I don’t care how you fish. Fly or Lure, just go out and enjoy the fresh air and the thrill of the hunt. Heaven knows how much longer we’ll all have such freedom.

You've made your feelings of Tenkara quite clear. However, I was introduced to fishing with a cane pole and a piece of line, a hook and a worm. These are the memories of my youth and no one can take them away from me. I just didn't know that cane poling would "evolve" in to the elite sportfishing known as Tenkara. Meh, you learn something new everyday..... Thanks for the videos!!! They have helped me introduce some friends to fly fishing without the air of elitism wafting about. As much as I love fly fishing, there are so many scenarios when fly fishing can be nearly impossible like bank fishing a good bass pond with trees directly above and behind you with no room to move around on the bank unless of course you find a target within bow casting distance or fishing really deep water. And as a fairly new fly fisherman still on the learning curve I struggle with large rivers with heavy currents so I also bring the spinning gear but I been lucky a few times shit my best brown I got was on a royal humpy dry fly right next to the bank it was 22.5" and fat. White bass fishing with a fly rod is a blast when they're busting on the surface hooking up on every cast. With trout I notice they're alot easier to catch when your fly is drifting in a current. In still water they don't seem to respond much but now a little more experience, I look back and realize I probably could've got em stripping in a wooly bugger.

Thanks for confirming I am as cool as I always suspected when I am fly fishing! -nothing worse than the “rippin’ lips” agro-erotic bass pro types. Try this little test: put on one of those bass outdoor shows. Close your eyes and listen to the phrases and noises they make.... it pretty much sounds like man porn. “Ohh... feel that pull on my rod..” “look at the size if that mouth...” etc etc. -then put on a Flip Pallot video. Fly fisherman are not the same. They actually read books without pictures 🤣👨🏻

But I like fly fishing in creeks and rivers more then if I am at a man made pond because I feel like you catch more fish when you use small flies. Like i have a creek by my house and i have caught a lot of small mouth on the fly but it is hard to get them with any thing else. Can we also ban the word “bow” as in rainbow trout? Not to be confused with the forward part of a boat. Hugely hate that word.

Why fly fishing’s better...because we have the tendency to be picking up that trash generated (and left behind) from all the bait fishermen

Its not completely accurate that flyfishing is safer for the fish. Of course treble hooks can do damage but the other way to kill a fish is by exhausting them. Traditional tackle can generally horse a fish in quicker than light wt. fly rods and this can be of great benefit to the fish. Quick catch quick release.
