Not just heavier hooks but heavier split rings as well... it's finding the best combination which is worth the effort Great tips as always Matt... really enjoy your channel!
The best advice from a Matt as a pro angler “you got to put your pride behind you . . .” I have seen well-renowned youtube anglers and pro anglers say “oh, i can only do finesse fishing with a baitcaster.” Or also say, “let me show you how to set up a baitcaster so that throw small baits. . “. I wont mention any names but Fact of the matter, a well-Rounded angler will know when and how to use both spinning reel and baitcaster reels. Thank you Matt. This is the best end-of-year advice going into 2023.
Definitely good tips as usual. Crank baits is only thing I use snaps on anymore. They definitely add more movement. I didn't think about them adding the weight up front. It makes sense.
Matt thank you for always taking time to answer and respond to questions presented by viewers. you seem to reply to more than most other channels. thank you again
thanks i really try to respond to everyone. its starting to take up a lot of time but ill keep responding as long as ive got time to do it. THanks for watching the videos!
It was a great afternoon, up till about 3:00 that afternoon I hadn't caught much. I had been throwing the Alabama rig with no success, I rounded a point with a man fishing for Crappie. I sat down, and laid the A rig down, not realizing the rig was touching the water. When I fired the Opti up to go around him, I not only watched my A rig go over the side. I had over $3000.00 worth of other rods & reels go over with it. I knew the chances of finding them in 20 ft of water was pretty slim. I had my track line, & several other A rigs on board. So I took the A rig & removed all the lures, then added treble hooks. I dropped it in made 3 passes on my trail then felt it get heavy. To my surprise I had all the rod & reel at the same time. Lucky me, when they went over, the Alabama Rig wrapped them all together and low and behold I got them all back. Almost went home, but decided to stay, fish the bank behind the guy Crappie fishing and made my last move for the day. That's when I hit the mother load on another secondary point on my way back to the ramp. Another great day on the lake for me, home safe and have a great tell to tell.
Solid advice, thanks! I switched to snaps on my shad raps a couple of years ago, and it does make a difference for casting distance and action - love it. I use Fastach snaps, 6 lb mono, and light spinning gear. Very effective. Long casts are super important for crankbaits, like you mentioned, and especially so in clear water. Good stuff, thanks again.
Thanks Matt. Something I never understood was the obsession with getting a crankbait deeper. I can see it if you need to hit 20'+ but less than that change to a deeper crank. I do run small cranks on spinning gear and can cover water very quickly with it. I use Shimano trigger spinning reels (Spirex) and it is amazing how much faster they are. Also running banks and changing water depths is where those clips shine.keep 2 or 3 different depth cranks on deck and change baits in 20 seconds to cover changing depths. The versatility of crankbaits today is amazing. It is safe to say there is a crankbait bite everyday if you have the right one.
THANKS FOR THAT INFO, I HAVE USED THEM BUT I NEVER GOT THEM DOWN WHERE I WANTED THEM. BUT WHEN I DID AND HIT THE POINTS I HAVE CAUGHT SOME GOOD SIZE ONES BUT NEVER KEEPT UP WITH IT . BY YOUR INFO I WILL USE IT THANKS MATT , LIKE YOUR INFO, GREAT HELP TO US FISHERMEN.
Great video. I’m at the other end of the spectrum fishing from the bank. I’m trying to cut most diving depths in half. ... for small cranks like the tiny og, I use a regular / moderate action rod with a lure rating of 1/8-5/8oz and a dual brake reel. This setup helps me get distance.
Good video. I would have made the spinning rod tip the first tip. Good comments on the snaps. I use snaps for crank baits for convince and to save on leader line, but I never considered the bonus of dive angle.
Good tips. I like the Norman Deep Baby N, 1/4 oz Trap and Shad Rap. I built a crank bait rod specifically for these baits. Don’t recall the blank but it is fiberglass and rated for 4-10 lb line.
🍺 Matt …You we’re correct during the members only live stream this evening. The NRX+ 901 S is a medium-light fast action rod not an extra fast. 1/16th -5/16th oz/ 6-10 lb line. It’s my Ned/hair jig rod. I have the new Stella FK on it because I need a good reliable drag with the 6 lb Tatsu line I use.
Great perspective Matt this is going to hopefully improve my pre spawn cranking this upcoming year. If love to see a video on you spinning rod setup for light crankbaits (line, rod power/length etc..)
I think guys underestimate the changes rod tip position can make. If your running too shallow changing your tip position to noon instead of 6 o'clock can keep the bait more shallow and vice versa
I feel like I look crazy, but more times then none I have the reel almost parallel with my shoulder and rod at prolly 10 or 11 I clock. Hookset just by leaning into em and taking a cpl steps backwards.
If you go back and look at the part of your video that you are talking about snaps, the snap extended past the lip, and so if the lip were to get frayed, from hitting rocks and cover, the snap would prevent break offs. I was watching you swing to back and forth and noticed that. Great video as always! Thanks Swami.
I use spinning gear with a clip for all my small crank bait fishing. I’m unable to cast far; therefore, spinning gear is more compatible. The snap replaces the O ring that comes with my new baits and makes change outs a quick process. Thank you for an excellent presentation.
Great content. I usually start with 1/2 ounce and move up and down from there depending on fishes mood. My early spring go to is the rattle trap and it out fished all other cranks. The trick for me was slowing down retrieval and bouncing on rocks. Changing weight usually was the best way to increase bottom contact
Looking forward to your next video. Maybe include some spring pond fishing techniques. I live in St Louis area with lots of ponds with 5 to 15 foot depth with some rip rap. Thanks bro
Nice tips.. Thank s... I've always used a snap and spinning gear for those franks I seem to get more bites. I use a 7' MH with a 30 size reel. 20lb yellow braid. For visual purpose and 20lb fluorocarbon leader.. I can raise/ lower the rod for different depths.. Works great for me
I love to use the lighter, smaller baits during prespawn. Especially on windy deep points with chuck Rock & lay down trees. I don't cast and retrieve, I prefer to get my bait down, and pull it like I would a Carolina Rig. Was using a SR 9 Gold Shad Rap & a Spro Bronze Eye in Summer Crawl. I told myself that day if I make 3 cast without a bite I was heading in. I caught a 7 lb 11oz, a 8lb 5oz plus a 4 to 5 pounder on about every cast. I left them biting as it was getting dark & and I had a little run back to the ramp. Great day on the water I'll never forget.
All great tips. Especially using the snaps. I've been doing it for years despite what many. I don't see a difference And it keeps me from getting lazy which is if we are honest most of us. We don't retire enough. Believe it or not I've actually used a snap on the split ring with great success also.. I always throw the real little guys on spinning tackle with light line.
matt great tips i dont have the time our money to different hooks for weights but thanks for alot of your tips and some tricks you fish for a living i fish for fun and space from people
I'll recommend the KVD 1.0 for this application. It's silent and it comes in the red chili color that KVD has on most of their hard baits. It's my secret sauce in the Midwest, especially with smallmouth.
Would you recommend adding additional spilt rings to add a slight amount of weight as well? Maybe on only the front hook? Thanks Matt as always you're the man. I love my spinning gear for cranks and jerks.
Matt, I think you hit on some issues that effect all of us, I use the lighter line approach myself and that really helps a bunch and throw in the spinning gear for those smaller baits and that is a recipe for success!!! Great job on this one!!!
Good last point you made. I think a lot of anglers overlook the fact that a bunch of rod manufacturers make Medium Heavy spinning rods. As an alternative to a baitcast setup, I've found that a 7 ft. MH spinning rod can work well for square bills; I find I can snake those style cranks through the rocks effectively without sacrificing any power/control.
I always fish smaller cranks on spinning gear. It just works better. 3/8 or smaller I will generally fish on a spinner! Also, it's almost time for the most magical day of the year on my lake! That one day where something special happens for a few hours and then it's gone! Best day of the year!
I'm excited to get out and throw some cranks! I had a great spring 2 years ago throwing them and have continued to enjoy success with crankbaits. Thanks for the tips! Any particular brand of 6lb. flourocarbon you'd recommend?
Got the split ring's and paint's now I need to get the clear coat and figure out how much a machine is going to be to get the lure making process going a little bit quicker
Can you suggest the best replacement trebles for retaining correct size while increasing weight? Thanks!! And I agree 100% that a spinner is a great way to chuck these smaller cranks a lot farther. I use 10 lb braid to 6 or 8 lb fluoro leader, Medium power/fast action rod depending on cover and water clarity. Works like a charm and virtually eliminates the usual knock against spinners (line twist). If you can use a Rod with a slightly softer tip like a St. Croix, it helps keep the fish pinned. Premier line for me has been the best bang for the buck. Mojo bass a worthy upgrade if you can find the extra coin.
the trebles very based on the stock hooks each manufacturer chooses. i carry piles of different trebel hooks so that i can make adjustment for each brand baits that I use
Hey Matt, I need to change out a lot of hooks on my hard baits this winter and I'm looking for some advice. I'd love to use Berkley hooks but I'm looking to get 100 count bulk packs and definitely can't afford that. So, I've narrowed it down to Mustad Triple Grip or round bend VMC or Victory. Leaning toward the round bends but was wondering what you thought. And, maybe more importantly, short shank or regular? Thanks for the help and great videos!
Man thats a tough question. I personal would lean towards the round bend if i could only have one. but i do like triple grip. generally i prefer short shank over regular
Couple tips, throw a spinning rod, throw a spinning rod ahhhh, throw a spinning rod. With 10# mono and the correct action rod. WHew that's Ford vs Chevy! (ha started typing before you said spinning) Drop your lure in the water, check how it sits, add suspend dot to maintain the same pitch. Good video, just came from Blaukat's and he has me in a gigging state of mind. Be well.
I fish inshore for reds and flounder with small crack baits with 10# flora with a bfs and keep that bait bouncing off of rocks and oyster shells But I do run into a problem with staying hooked up with numbers 8 tribes hooks I’ve tried single hook and to me it worse lol good video
Berkley's website said to my surprise that braid gets lures like crank baits deeper than mono for the reason it is a thinner diameter regardless to the fact that it floats.
I have a buddy that can't use a bait caster. I set him up with a 6'8 medium spinning rood and 3000 style reel. Somedays he absolutely wears them out when I'm throwing larger baits. The size I catch is bigger but it still takes 5 to win.
Matt have you fished the Strike King Hybrid Hunter bait much and what do you think about it? I have seen several videos where they were catching big fish one after another buy several different fisherman. Looks like a very good bait.
From the comments I'd say everyone's on board with this. There is a time for a bait caster and a time to put it down. And if you use a quality reel you might haul in a personal best like I did some twenty years ago.
My biggest issue with spinning gear for crankbaits is casting accuracy, especially around docks or structure. I mainly use spinning rod for floating worm or open water. Dock owners seem to get really cranky when my cast goes awry and I send a square bill into their leather pontoon seats. 😳😩
I use a 6'6" M Berkley lightning rod(not the Shock Rod) and it is like a fiberglass action. The short rod and parabolic action make it accurate. That rod is maybe $40. and the best light crankbait rod at any price.
@@MattStefanFishing I can shoot a lure into any tight spot with baitcast equipment but give me a spinning rod and I’m like a wild man. Yeah since I use baitcast 95% of the time, that probably doesn’t help. I just really don’t care much for spinning I guess.
I don’t know why anyone would really be fishing a crank on braid to begin with. It’s become common knowledge that straight floro is the line of choice when cranking in general, with the exception of shallow water cranking, wherein braid to floro is sometimes used. Or occasionally mono for short range combat due to stretch. Even with that said, there are floating and sinking braids available now.
@@MattStefanFishing I'll definitely keep trying em I have at least 20 different ones. I don't know if it's how I'm retteaving the cankbait or if it's the color. I mostly try the red ones or shad color and black. Perch color is one I still want to try even tho we don't have perch in Southern Utah
Can we just C-rig straight retrieving lures to get deeper? Just don't be like Tas Moua, the legendary noob and C-rig yo jerkbaits. That's insanity at the highest level. It's called a C-rig for a reason. Geez. The C stands for crawling. Tas also says spoons outfish livebaits for stripers at the famous Check 12. I asked him, "Do you want to run one against livebaits?" Dead crickets I hear. Easiest money I will make from a MLF pro. They can just put me in his place on that fishing magazine cover. Fishing magazines are useless like self-help books. The sound of dead crickets is oh so beautiful.
Why even use a snap, when you accomplish the same results with a split ring, plus having more bomb proof reliability? Not sure why this is recommended. Changing hooks is good. Spinning gear is great.
I've never understood why people have against using spinning gear? A sissy stick, whatever they wanna call them...??? Thier all missing out on a lot fish catch's. It a tool just like anything else. I use both bait casters & spinning rods equally. Spinning rods are far better for lighter line& baits. I try to use whatever is going to be effective for whatever baits & scenario I'm in at the moment. I need get & try new clicking fritz sides.
Thanks but no thanks ...Crank baits are just not very sporty for the fish ... In my opinion if you need 6 hooks or more on a bait to catch a fish ... well lets just say your one of those guys. LOL ... Sorry just MY opinion.
@@MattStefanFishing Not Dogging you at all Sir obviously, you're very good at what you do and I really appreciate your channel. Thank you so much for all the great information I watch you on a regular basis. I understand in a tournament you have to catch fish. I prefer to fish for fun that's all. in the words of Richard Gene the fishing machines "it's a sport second to none"
Maybe triple the bites on plastics? IDK, I hardly boat fish. That was our best method while the tourney driver was using bass jigs and dropshot to some success. He lost most of his jig fish like Informative Fisherman tho. Lol. He does fish the best custom "finesse" jigs. We had to travel across the city to get em from the other buddy. In Coomiefornia, the lakes are deep and full of rocks and trees. He lost most of his jigs too. He said and I quote him, "This is getting too expensive." I don't even know why Randy loves jigs. As for trout jigs, the right jighead will flow right in the current due to weight accuracy to get bit. The balance is keeping it down while achieving the natural flow. This is why they cannot defeat me and the dumb buddy. We figured this out together as a team. You can always learn something from a dummy. We gots it down to the tee. The lady girlfriend of a stranger was impressed by my fishing skills. Her bf asked to see my setup through her. I didn't know if he was ashamed or if he couldn't habla English. It's okay, been telling you guys I am elite. I showed him. He went and bought everything the same. He was missing only the right head and the scent effect. He did badly. See, I showed him, but I never fully taught him. He never asked. I didn't want to be a Mr. KnowItAll or sound like a smarty pants. If they don't ask, don't tell. Been on that road too many times to know to keep my mouth shut. People don't have gratitude. I did give them many of my catches. Always hated on for doing the right thing. They should just stay impressed. The science has to be down to the tee. How about, if yo man cannot fish, you need new bf? No offense. In bass fishing, you have to find their hideouts. In trout fishing, you have to know the feeding lanes, and to keep it above their heads. That's why the float-and-fly technique aka dropshot is so effective. Saw an old guy dressed fly fancy flying with a float today with much success. My brother comes along in his street clothes and flip flops and put him to shame using only dry flies next to him. That's hard to do. In fact, he put all the elite-looking fly fishers to shame this day. That's what you called elite. Gotta beat the top guys at what they do. In fishing as in fighting, this is the goal. People say you just have to be better than yourself. Don't ask me how I feel about that. This is not a game to me. I believe Sugar Ray said he ran in the rain and snow. People were confused. He said he just wants to be better than everyone. I don't blame him. He was when he box.
@@treymorey When a genius talk, you will never understand him until it reveals itself to you. Insanity and genius are one the same. Remember I teach you that.
@@treymorey Brother, is not the dropshot not the right term for fly fishing with the floater? I'm teaching you a term means different things in the same sport. Did Sugar Ray not say those things? Do you lose more jigs than you can afford? Cmon yo. And you wanna talk fishing? Are not the best jigs the finesse? Cmon yo. I can say, technically, I have never jig for bass but I can tell you everything about it even the info from Bass University or the things which Matt has told you...or the stuff elite ones do such as plucking and trimming the stupid hook guard. If you take the advice of pros, then go with a ball jighead only as suggested by the Gman or use only blue and black and brown in only big or finesse. That guy knows his craft. I can tell you that you won't be on his level. Whatever he says about jigs make sense unlike the other pros who do not do what they preach. There's two ways to set the hook on a jig 1. Slowly drag it into the fish 2. Fast and snappy. One is for the elderly and one is for the younsters. Remember I teach you that also. Perhaps you are lost bc I talk about trout fishing. I mean to teach you that in order to fish bass at the highest level, you must know how to fish trout at the highest level. You cannot be a great basser if you don't understand trout at the highest level. It was too hard for you to make the correlation. Yet there are still many secrets hidden in the initial comment. You see how genius it is?
Not just heavier hooks but heavier split rings as well... it's finding the best combination which is worth the effort Great tips as always Matt... really enjoy your channel!

Thanks Again For The Great Videos What Rod Length And Action Would You Recommend For Small Cranks GOOD LUCK On The Upcoming Season
reply depends on how small but i like a 7 ft M or ML spinning rod for small cranks
When I fish small crank baits I throw them on a spinning reel. They do work well !
nice!
Thanks for the video.
You bet
As always, great info!
Glad it was helpful!
Be well.
thanks for sharing your tips!
Love cranking
catches big ones!
@@MattStefanFishing it does indeed
Good tips!
Thanks
Another excellent vid! Matt, any difference between a snap and a swivel in terms of performance?
Not in my opinion
Just helping the algorithm. Thanks man 👍
I appreciate it
I fish inshore for reds and flounder with small crack baits with 10# flora with a bfs and keep that bait bouncing off of rocks and oyster shells But I do run into a problem with staying hooked up with numbers 8 tribes hooks I’ve tried single hook and to me it worse lol good video
stick with what works for you!
Berkley's website said to my surprise that braid gets lures like crank baits deeper than mono for the reason it is a thinner diameter regardless to the fact that it floats.
interesting
I have a buddy that can't use a bait caster. I set him up with a 6'8 medium spinning rood and 3000 style reel. Somedays he absolutely wears them out when I'm throwing larger baits. The size I catch is bigger but it still takes 5 to win.
awesome!
Awesome video!! Are you using mono or fluoro on the spinning gear?? Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
Both...just depends on the situation
Good morning
What size and brand or style would you recommend for the snap
i like the owner or spro snaps
🍺Thanks Matt.
thanks for watching the livestream tonight!
I like using spinning gear for crank bait . With success like it real good.
awesome!
Have you made a BFS rod if so what is the set up? thanks
I have not yet
@@MattStefanFishing any suggestions as where to start?
Matt have you fished the Strike King Hybrid Hunter bait much and what do you think about it? I have seen several videos where they were catching big fish one after another buy several different fisherman. Looks like a very good bait.
I have not yet but have some on order!
What snaps are you using?
i like the owner egg snaps
Are you removing the split ring when using a snap?
I do because it is not needed and just does not look right on the front of your crank. The snaps are black, thin and stealthy.
@@kevinbeaudean704 👍
yes
@@MattStefanFishing great, thanks
I buy the 99 cent one Walmart, and load my a Alabama rig to through at white bass. The load it up
sounds good!
From the comments I'd say everyone's on board with this. There is a time for a bait caster and a time to put it down. And if you use a quality reel you might haul in a personal best like I did some twenty years ago.
awesome!
That rod is maybe $40. and the best light crankbait rod at any price.
practice makes perfect!
@@MattStefanFishing I can shoot a lure into any tight spot with baitcast equipment but give me a spinning rod and I’m like a wild man. Yeah since I use baitcast 95% of the time, that probably doesn’t help. I just really don’t care much for spinning I guess.
Light line and a spinning rod.
works great!
My tip is to put the wind at your back when casting flatside potato chip baits.
good tip!
My question is, why don't I have any luck on red cranks? I've tried them when you're supposed to but no luck .
thats a good question. generally one of the best cold water colors
@@MattStefanFishing Yeah it's weird lol one factor may be that we don't have muddy water
👍👍👍👍👍
thanks for watching!
Constantly changing hooks.
me too!
Even with that said, there are floating and sinking braids available now.
thanks for sharing
Tip of the day….bfs and they cast and dive like crazy
thanks for sharing!
I've never caught a fish on a square bill or any type of crank bait or jerk bait. Only drop shot and jigs
keep trying the crankbaits. they work great, just take practice
The sound of dead crickets is oh so beautiful.
thanks for sharing!
Get in the boat. I'll show you how to crankbait.
sounds good!
Why even use a snap, when you accomplish the same results with a split ring, plus having more bomb proof reliability? Not sure why this is recommended. Changing hooks is good. Spinning gear is great.
thanks for watching
I've never understood why people have against using spinning gear? A sissy stick, whatever they wanna call them...??? Thier all missing out on a lot fish catch's. It a tool just like anything else. I use both bait casters & spinning rods equally. Spinning rods are far better for lighter line& baits. I try to use whatever is going to be effective for whatever baits & scenario I'm in at the moment. I need get & try new clicking fritz sides.
the clickin fritz sides are good!

Is it me or is your back tackle wall getting full , good grief 😀
haha! ive been cleaning out the boat for the winter putting some things back on the wall.
Thanks but no thanks ...Crank baits are just not very sporty for the fish ... In my opinion if you need 6 hooks or more on a bait to catch a fish ... well lets just say your one of those guys. LOL ... Sorry just MY opinion.
stick with what works for you.
Brother, I think you’re on the wrong video
@@treymorey Oh, I am on the right video. Think a little and ye shall learneth brother. I give you elite skills. You are an ungrateful fool.
I am teaching you the highest level and you are blind. What good are your eyes when your mind is blank?
