Gotta say: thankful for the 10% discount & I am going to give the Bento Bag a try, BUT the Nomad Lane company has some questionable practices on their website. A $9.99 upcharge for the privilege of expedited shipping and when you get to the shipping, it’s nothing special-just the usual expensive as hell shipping plus it is the only way you get an increase to 15% off which wipes out a good portion of your discount. Then their return policy, which isn’t easy to locate, is quite complicated AND DOESN’T APPLY TO HAWAII AND ALASKA RESIDENTS. I sure hope i like the bag and don’t have to return it. You might consider having someone else affiliate with your channel. They seem borderline shady to me.

7:15 One of the main reasons why there's never enough room in the overhead baggage compartment is people are putting their carry-on and personal items up there so the people who board later won't have any room for their carry-on.

It has a lot to do with flyers choosing the discount airlines which charge for features which the mainline airlines do not. If flyers always choose the cheapest then the overall level of service will decline. It’s just economics.

Not defending airlines, but tickets are cheaper than. 25 years ago. In 1997, I paid $1500 for a flight flight to Seoul. In June I paid $950 for the same flight, but with no checked luggage. Adjusted for inflation, I am paying much less than half the 1997 price.

    • @so.many.obstacles

The problem begins with travelers. People will bring 5 items onto a plane and try and put most in the overhead bin. Then others can put their rollerboards in the bin. Then FAs have to play Tetris or find a spot for or check the bags. This creates unnecessary delays while boarding. If people followed the rules, we would not be here.
I have flown other interline carriers and they have strict rules and they work. Some places won’t even allow you to line up and crowd the boarding gate of it’s not your zone. Nor can people deplane when they want to, the FA will deplane three rows at a time. I said all that to say that people ruin everything.

Followed by waiting on the tarmac for takeoff, actual flight time and then waiting to arrive at the gate, deplane and bags and getting to where you need to be. In the end you will have your car and full control over your schedule. Please consider doing the math and conserving fuel.

I recently flew to Edmonton and then back from Calgary. In both cases when I went to print out my baggage tags, I was given a tag for my carry on. Not knowing what this meant, I placed it on my carry on bag. When I got to the plane I was told that meant I HAD to gate check it. I had been pre-selected to check my carry on. The issue I had was that ALL my medication was in my carry on bag! Not only was I denied access to it during the flight but, I was terrified it wouldn’t arrive with me. Not having it would made me very sick, possibly even gotten me hospitalized. I was NOT happy about not being explained that this would happen! When I flew back from Calgary the same thing happened but this time I understood and was prepared. I had time to take out my medication and flight essentials and put them in a tote bag for the flight. So, it wasn’t an issue coming back. But, because so many people are flying carry on only or with carry bags, many more are being forced to check their carry on bags.

That's why I like Amsterdam so much. No need to take anything out, body scanner instead of regular detector. If you carry more electronics, or items which may need to be further identified, it would only result in additional check after the scan, which just means that you are asked to open the bag, and let the customs find what looked suspicious at the screening. Occasionally they will also put your bag, or some items through secondary screening. For most of cases: you just put your bag without taking out anything out, and you are good to go. I like Amsterdam transfer, other airports should be like Amsterdam! (and I am not even Dutch!)

I just returned from an overseas trip. I knew about the new carry on rule for international airlines before leaving, so I purchased a smaller carry on than my normal 22" carry on. I was on 3 flights, and I checked each carrier for their new rules. However, while waiting to board a Lufthansa flight in Chicago, even before boarding, they were asking for passports and had a bin to put your carry on in. I am assuming that this line (different than the gate lines) was to make sure everyone put their carry on in their bins. Of course mine was only off about 1/2 inch, so I had to check it. Several passengers who were in line with me waiting to use the carry on bin told me that Lufthansa is the most strict with their new carry on rules. Here's the thing though. I got to the gate early but as it got closer to them announcing they would begin boarding, the line to measure your carry on became very long and they gave it up and stopped measuring the bags.

Have to think from airline staff perspective in the US. From my understanding not only are they not paid until the flight is off the ground but they are also rated how long it takes to clear the close the ground. So this means if they look around the waiting gate and see lots of carry on they may start gate check process to help the inevitable issue of no overhead storage available. All of this could've been avoid if airline didn't charge check in fee. The other solution would be assigning overhead bins to only that row of seats. This would keep people honest about their carry on because there always that issue of someone taking up two slots of space or they decide to put both their carryon and personal item into the bin

    • @Reed-2big

This has always seemed like the best idea, except it doesn’t allow for the bins that actually blocked by first aid kits and other cabin and crew “stuff”. There is also the allowance for a medical bag that doesn’t count as a carry on, which can be most any size that would still fit in the overhead.
I still think there should be a system where perhaps the middle seat was guaranteed an overhead bin slot as a reward for being absolutely miserable for the flight?

On a recent trip to Europe, I noted that there was room for six carry on bags for every nine passengers in economy. Because we had booked economy on Air Canada, we were not able to pay for a checked bag. So we played space wars with the other passengers that included “personal items” being put in the overhead bins rather than on the floor as the airline expects, 3 or even 4 items per person rather than the stated two items. The airlines have allowed a mess to be created.

I interviewed on a Friday, and on Monday, I was approved. Off topic, I understand that starting next year, a ETA will be required for going to the UK. I wonder, will I have to get 2 ETA's since I will be going to France as well as the UK? Guess I will find out soon enough. I really enjoy your videos. The EU ‘visa’ is the ETIAS and is scheduled to come into effect in November, but I’ve heard it may not be fully enforced until early in 2025. It saves a lot of hassle chasing luggage when the airport loses or destroys your checked items. Between it and a heavy duty Wenger backpack I can carry everything I need and it inclues 2 laptops, i pad, all the chargers, and essentially I can stop whevever I am and do mobile computing if necessary, even if I am delayed in airports or alternative destinations and in 15 years I have never had to check it, even on smaller regional jets.

Having returned from an international trip yesterday, it was my experience that there is no standard. Even with the new scanners, you can leave your liquids in your carry-on, only to be separately screened and sampled because the operator "sees" the liquid, but feels compelled to analyze it. Also, a pound of ground coffee in it's sealed foil bag does not x-ray well, and will be pulled for physical examination. Just do not carry liquids, or embrace the hassle.
As to carry-on luggage size or number, again, it does not really matter. What does matter is that you sit forward of about the 18th row. After that, the overhead luggage space is full from the travelers ahead of you in line, and you will be forced to check your bag at the entrance ramp. It does not matter how diligent you were in following the rules. Fly first class, business, fake an injury for extra time to board, or be prepared to check your bag.

Security in Mice did tell me, and she’d just missed it. But that turned out not to be the item, a glasses case I bought in Switzerland. That still helped hurry up the search.

I use a carryon that fits under the seat in front of me, plus one shoulder bag. I bring the bare minimum of liquids and buy more of what I need when I get where I'm going. Worked fine for me for a 3-week trip to Colorado, but it was a real pain having to wait for people to haul their giant bags out of the overheads when getting off the plane - I swear, it took ten minutes for me (at the back of the plane) to get off, just because it took people ahead of me so long to get themselves and their stuff together.

My favorite "hack" is to wear a jacket or sweatshirt with pockets in which I can put things into as they generally have not counted things that you are wearing on you, as part of your carry-on (as long as it doesn't make you look excessively large) but for example I would put my power bank, and some electronic cables (which can total about 5 lbs) into my jacket pockets). The weight allowance for carry-ons for most European travel is the one thing that I wish they would increase. Many US carriers don't seem to care about the weight to a point (some do limit it to 35-50 lbs, which is a lot anyway) but it seems that most European airlines limit it to just 22 lbs (or 10kg) which is rather restrictive. So it would be nice if they increased this to say 35 lbs (but keep the same overall size, which some the size differences between US and European airlines is not that big in most cases, maybe 1" shorter on the long side of a carry-on is what I saw -- so 21" versus 22" for US domestic carriers). However, if they do standardize the size/weight across all airlines in Europe (and in the US too) it would mean that they would be checking more often and more people might ge caught up in this. Of course just following the guidelines whatever they are at the time, is the best route to avoid paying for checked bags unless it's one of those small CRJ planes which most bags (even small carry-ons) have to be checked anyway but usually free of charge in many cases since they are gate checked or checked as you board the plane).
On my way to Europe, some couple had packed what appeared to be about a 1 litre jug of juice they had just purchased, which had to be thrown away (they were not happy, but I'm thinking "you know the rules, and you can buy one when you get to your destination".)

Last international trip they weighed my carryon and it was too heavy. So i put a bunch of things in my pockets, made the weight limit and then put everything back in luggage including my jackets out of site of the gatekeepers. As I travel in the winter, I use layers, so have plenty of pockets. Just bought a vest jacket with extra pockets.
Also, a few years ago, it happened, only I had paid for an extra checked bag and it turned out I was allowed more weight than the free checked bags, so I just moved things.

Yes in Europe the rules are harsher, but it is also meant to keep fuel usage down. Not for the airlines to save money, but for pollution reasons. Try flying Ryanair, and find out what restrictive is. We flew the equivalent of this airline to UK, and were only allowed a very small carry on, and terrible fees for a check bag.

    • @caryg9821
      @caryg9821 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Stormbrise Don't think cabin weight or size limits have anything to do with fuel as you can add one or more checked bags if you can't fit it all in carryon. Size and weight limits have more to do with safety and having cabin room for it all - maybe even faster loading of passengers (and maybe even force people to use a checked back that costs extra).
I would like to see the weight limit increased to 15kg, but have seen it at both 7 and 10kg. I always use at least one checked, but only fly airlines that don't charge.

2 comments. First, the whole reason for security is to make you nervous. They are hoping the confusion and stress will make you do something radical. I flew from El Paso to LAX last month and the wound up diverting both of my carryons for inspection. The reason ... I had some creams in there for the exceedingly dry skin I get living in the desert southwest. They were large tubes and were confiscated. But the whole layout is designed to upset you. Crowding and some guy standing there shouting instructions while you try to put all the stuff they want you to take off/out is stressful. By the time I was finished, I was sweating and out of breath (I'm 75). Second, there are planes that literally don't have bins that will hold any carryon of more than minimal size. The bins are a joke. I had to gate check my standard size roller carryon. Then, at our destination, the stewardess announced that we had to make absolutely sure we retrieved our bags as there was a rule that once we exited the jetway we couldn't return if we forgot and the bags would not be delivered to the gate area. WTF?

Although this standard was never approved officially, a few baggage manufacturers did begin to make bags that confirmed to that standard; when the proposal fell out of favor, the manufacturers repurposed the marketing as weekend bags. Why don't airline design their overhead bins a little bigger so you can put carry-on bags in sideways rather than flat?
You'd be able to get almost twice as many bags in

First of all, that's the plane manufacturers job. Not the airlines.
Second: this is exactly what Airbus and Boeing are doing with their NEOs and MAXs .
The overhead bins are now designed just bigger enough that you can put in a standard cabin trolley upright and facing the aisle. Means each compartment can fit 4 cabin trolleys now.
Retrofitting those on older planes can be done but is extremely expensive to do outside of regular scheduled longer maintenance stops.. therefor will only be done during so called C-checks when the plane is out of service for a couple weeks and being stripped of the interior anyway.

Are blankets and neck pillows now being considered personal items??? If so, this is insane for long haul flights as I use my personal bag for flight survival items and can't fit my neck pillow or blanket inside. I use a small tote for my personal items that goes under the seat in front (this is to avoid using up my leg room as I have foot issues). I use a small roller for overhead in accordance with airline policy. I also wear a fanny pack so I can always have my passport, etc on me at all times. It's going to be a challenge consolidating my fanny pack, neck pillow and blanket inside my small tote bag and need I those items at my seat and not in the overhead. Boy my anxiety is up just thinking about this.

No ribbon - some airlines are cracking down on them as the gat caught in the overhead hinges & by other items. If it gets checked, they can get caught in the baggage claim roundabout machinery. Saw a major airline make a person cut them off, so I removed mine quickly beforehand.

I haven't flown for a long, long time. Long before there was any rule about liquids at all. So I'm curious. What is the danger/security risk in liquids?
It's probably a good idea to have specific rules for carry-ons. Too many people seem to try to carry everything on so they can skip checking their bags (which, I assume costs extra now...?) since cabins only have so much room. Even when I did fly (last time was in 1996), I never had more than purse for a carry-on and it would offend me when one person would fill a whole storage compartment with luggage which clearly should have been checked. I must remember to ask my son and daughter-in-law about all this stuff. They travel internationally all the time.

The risk is that liquids could be used as explosives. By limiting the volume they limit the risk. The 3-1-1 liquid rule was introduced in Sept. 2006.

I remember years ago how people really abused the carry-on luggage rules. I've seen people bring on board two large bags or suitcases and a personal item.

I’ve seen golf clubs, musical instruments, crutches, canes, and sombreros put into overhead bins. There has to be some kind of standard not to mention very large suitcases.

@@randyhome1544 Yes. One time all the overhead space looked like it was filled up when I walked in. The flight attendant asked me to pull a certain bag down and she was going to do something with it. She was going to let me use that space. The person who owned it spoke up and asked for it. She then placed it underneath the seat in front of her. After landing she had that bag and two others. The flight attendant knew where she was going to make room at if needed.

Ok and now I had to pay 60 euro fines for carrying my EMPTY bagpack that is 3-4 cm longer than required but much thinner than required. Hope it makes you happy. I was traveling to meet my old alone mother and not for luxury. So many disgusting people in comments here!

Just flying within the USA is getting ridiculous. This last flight from OH to FL we actually checked one bag but the issue is carry-on size and uncertainty about backpack size. Honestly, we just try not to fly anymore.

I don't understand why USA travellers are obsessed with carry-on bags. When travelling in Europe, most airlines allow one 20 kg suitcase that is included in the fare. Also, I can count on one hand the situation where I had to wait at the baggage carousel for my bag. Suitcases usually arrive before we get to the carousel and are waiting on the conveyer belt long before the passengers arrive. Is this not the case when travelling in the USA? Recently (August 2024) I had to wait nearly an hour before my suitcases arrived on the carousel at ORD. Why isn't baggage handling more efficient?

The confusing thing is when there is a connecting international flight of another airline. Which airlines baggage rules will be used for both to and from to United States. Baggage allowances on code-share routes are determined by IATA's Most Significant Marketing Carrier (MSC) rule. Can you find out what this rule is all about pls

You also have to be aware of the weight limits. The airline won’t care if the dimensions are within range if you’ve gone over the weight limit. That’s why I never ever ever use hard shelled suitcases because you waste weight allowance. I also don’t use compression packing cubes coz they just throw more weight into your bag with the “extra” clothing you’re fooled into packing.

Every airline, on their website has the size limit for stowed carry-on luggage and for the secondary bag that can go under your seat. It will also give you weight limits for your carry-on bag and the luggage that goes in the hold.

I don't know If you are aware that Clamshell backpacks exist. Like Peak Design backpack 45 or 30 or certain models of Pacsafe backpacks zip all the way open. Unlike Clamshell wheeled carry-ons, backpacks are seen as squishable or can be compressed in the overhead bins unlike the roll on baggage that you seem to prefer. That's why people with backpacks get away with it. 😂 A clam shell roll-on, even if fully empty, won't compress!
