Gale Warning | Ep. 222

  • Plagued by light headwinds, my plan to round Nantucket Light and then head for Maine is now utterly foiled. To make matters worse, the brisk northeasterlies in the forecast have prompted a gale warning from the National Weather Service. What to do? Carry on, or turn back to Buzzards Bay?

    The glassy calm before a blow, tense and eerie. Important decisions to be made. You captured it well.

    You demonstrated a great paradigm for living. Collect as much information as you can, make a decision, and then prepare for the worst. When you know your craft, and you know yourself it certainly helps. I hope you will share the outcome, I am looking forward to it.

    Thanks for sharing your true feelings in anticipation of the Gale. Only time I've been caught out in one was before any satellite Wx in 2005 coming back from Bermuda to Charleston - so I did NOT know it was coming & was mistakingly have a ball going faster and faster down wind until I realized the wind was now up over 25K and how the F*#K was I going to get the sails down - I managed but boy it was NOT fun! From then on it's been reef early and reef often for sure.

    You can definitely see the trepidation that comes with these decisions when you have skin in the game. I was also thinking of how wonderful it is when we can see into the future with weather forecasting, even though in times, like with this video, when ignorance my serve up a little bliss. Thanks again for another chapter.

      Hi Mike, yes, in the past they might have been blissfully ignorant, but then a lot of ships were lost as a direct result of said ignorance. Forewarned is forearmed.

    Just checking in Kevin. I been very busy last few months. I sold my vacation home in Florida since we spoke and looking for property along the Tennessee River in Alabama. The west coast of Florida has just got stupid crazy. To much traffic for this Indiana farm boy. A nice quiet place along the Tennessee River in Alabama or Mississippi is a better fit for me. I’m at a point in life where I don’t want to be around people. Sad I know…lol. But so many people was moving to the Bradenton/ Sarasota area. The biggest housing development in the US is Lakewood Ranch in Manatee County. It would take a hour to drive the 6 miles from my house to the beach on Anna Maria Island, then you could not find parking. I hated giving up my boat slip on the Manatee river out my back door, but it would take me a half hour to drive 3 miles to Walmart when traffic was heavy. 1200 people a day move to Florida, that’s just crazy to me. Property is cheap in Rural Alabama even on the river, and you can find areas with no neighbors for a miles.
    I had some free time this weekend and I been Binge watching your channel to catch up. Congratulations on hitting 30k subscribers. You was under 200 subscribers when I found you. I shared your channel with all my friends and sailing groups on Facebook. You still have the best and most pure Sailing channel on TH-cam. You was the first and only channel I ever donated to a tip jar. You was the first sailor to actually teach me something about sailing. Not just showing T&A. You showed everyone a guy can sail the world in a 30-32ft full keel boat without a engine. You showed me a guy don’t have to be a millionaire to make dreams come true. You have been a true inspiration to me and many others Kevin. Once we get moved south I plan to buy a Sailboat and keep down on the gulf coast. Split my time between River Life and living on a boat, maybe sailing to the Bahamas in the winter months. On a small 28 foot Bristol Channel Cutter. I have a Broker looking now, but the ones he finds seem to be in the Pacific Northwest or California. Transporting one to Texas is crazy, and I’m not confident enough to bring one through the Panama Canal alone. But I will find one on the east coast. I’m not in a hurry.
    Thanks for the inspiration Kevin. You helped me with advice when I was buying my first sailboat (Allegra 24)a full keel trailer sailer. Nothing I can’t do or fix around the farm, but sailing had me worried I’m not going to lie. I have alot to learn. But because of you I’m ready to give it a try on a bigger scale. Who knows, I may sell the River property and go to sea full time. But property is a investment for me. I may rent out the property to fishermen this way I always have a home base if I can’t live on a boat someday.
    Fair Winds Kevin.🇺🇸🦅⛵️

      Aw shucks, thanks for that Joe. I should think West Florida is now beyond stupid crazy, being in the path of a major hurricane. Bristol Channel Cutters are great boats, would be a fine choice. Feel free to send an email if you want to bounce any ideas off me about a new boat and cruising plans.

    Could you put a pulley at the end of the bowsprit with a line a bit more than twice the length of the bowsprit? then attach the yankie to one end of the line and pull the other end so the foot of the yankie goes to the end without you having to go there, reverse for retrieval might make you a little safer if you get caught with a sudden wind shift or may just mean you can use the yankie a bit longer. Maybe something to ponder and fiddle with when at anchor.

    • @howtosailoceans1423
      @howtosailoceans1423  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen that on some gaffers with very long sprits. They have a loop around the sprit with parrel beads so it rolls out smoothly to the end of the sprit on an outhaul, then rolls right back inboard once released. Possibly. In the mean time I continue to venture out there ...

      @@howtosailoceans1423 I first saw that arrangement on some racing trimarans that had wave piercing bows that were too narrow to walk on, and then later on cat's and tri's with prodders (basically a retractable bowsprit) but it really doesn't natter where you take your inspiration from👍
