These Family sketches are truly heartbreaking because they are so close to reality

It was pretty great to see her stand up for herself and win. I’ve always felt bad for Eunice in these Mama sketches. She is always the butt of the joke. Not this time. Glad to see her as The victor against Mama and Ed.

Brilliant writing to have Woodward’s character call out people who claim “decency “, but in reality are cruel and judgmental.

It was the one night I was allowed to stay up late to watch the carol Burnett show.i treasured those t.v. nights with my wonderful mother. R.i.p. mom. Till we meet again.
This was the same year Joanne Woodward was in “Sybil” with Sally Field, one of the best mini series ever done on television for which she was nominated for an Emmy.
Joanne Woodward was a wonderful actress, and a totally class act. She had already won an Oscar when she and Paul Newman got married, for Three Faces of Eve. Paul once famously said, when asked if he was ever tempted to stray from his marriage, "Why go out for hamburger when you've got steak waiting at home?"
And she made her own gown for the event.

These family sketches are like little one act plays; the quality of the writing is like that of fine theatre. Eunice is such a well developed, multi faceted, and, ultimately, tragic creation; Carol Burnett is at her best when portraying her. This episode is particularly fine as it includes Joanne Woodward, a magnificent actress in her own right.

One of my favorite movies that Joanne Woodward was in was The Three Faces of Eve. It’s an old b&w classic from the late 50’s where she was diagnosed with multiple personalities. Great old movie 👍
She and Paul Newman both starred in The Long Hot Summer, also a very good late 50’s classic!
Midge was a really good sport putting up with those insults from battle axe Mama, & I LOVED how she stood up for herself to the battle axe Mama & to Ed! And what she said is true! It doesn't matter what kind of lifestyle you live, as long as you are nice & kind to people! Amen Midge! 👏👏

Paul was s-o-o endearing!When I was 13 and saw the modern day "Exodus" movie, I was miserable. I actually missed him. And felt that way about some guys ever since! I'm 68 now......

I don't think the Carol Burnett show was so much the acting it was the reacting to the lines on the page. That's something you can't teach. There was a lot of ad-libbing on this show too. So, as funny as the scripts might have been, they were made 10 times as funny with the natural way they said the lines and reacted to the lines.

😄 Ol’ Eunice really put the fear of God into Ed and Mama at the end! Her expressions are priceless. And what a treat to see the great Joanne Woodward in a guest comic role. Hilarious but touched with that little bit of pathos/sadness, like all the ‘Family’ sketches. Eunice just wanted an evening of fun, but her friend gets driven off by the reality she is sadly stuck with. They don’t make quality sketch comedy like this anymore. Long gone.
This is one of the few episodes there Eunice actually got the upper hand, and the support she needs.

LUUUUVVV’s ME SOME CAROL BURNETT. Oh, And that green sweater and UGLY brown Flowered dress that showed up in SO MANY skits. And JoAnne Woodward-Newman was ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, (and turned 91 on Feb 27, 2022) And She is STILL GORGEOUS. it’s so funny how great Carol and her team were at recreating the clothes and hair styles of that era on her show. And JoAnne’s hair is so “dead on” in this skit. I can remember women looking like this when I was a kid. We had two of them in our Church this one that JoAnne portrays could be her Sister. I just love seeing these old skits in their entirety. Thanks for posting! Love you Carlo. Thanks for the laughs….We’re still laughing today as will generations to come. GOD Speed Carol Burnett.

These sketches represent comedic genius on many levels.
Midge Gibson. Lol. The contempt in Vickie Lawrence’s voice is chilling when she says Alley Cat. And the way the audience laughed at the joke where Midge’s ex husband used to beat her. Ouch. Also, my grandmother, in the 70's had the same wallpaper in her house "going up the steps" and in the upstairs hallway. It's like a trellis with ivy and some type of pink flower. Seeing it in these sketches brings back some painful memories! It isn't just these scripts that are bone chilling. My grandmother and mother had a temper like Mama and Eunice, and I often felt like Midge does in this sketch until I stopped speaking to them forever. Treat people badly, and they eventually leave you.
I still watch this wonderful show, every night!!! Joanne Woodward is a class act!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️.......

This was one of my favorite Family episodes. My mom and I loved these Family skits. We used to laugh like crazy. Eunice was our favorite character. Carol Burnette is mega talented. She deserves every ounce of her success. God bless Carol and all the other actors on her TV show.
I loved watching these as a kid, I'll never forget that big old brown TV set and my brother, sister and I sitting around it. I think I liked TV shows from back then way more than today. The Carol Burnett show, Laverne & Shirley, Three's Company, Gilligan's Island I Love Lucy and The Golden Girls to name a few. I know they're all from different time periods but watching them in reruns is so relaxing brings me back to when times were good in the world.

I just realized that Eunice's 1940s hairstyle is akin to women who still have those early 90s bottle brush bangs and gel covered curls.
Carol and Vickie had such a natural chemistry with one another in these skits.
Mama Harper reminds me a little too much of my own mother and I am her Eunice! Except my vice wasn’t liquor, it was pills! Always negative, never had a kind word to say about anyone and mood swings that would give you whiplash! I miss my mom every day, but sadly, I’m glad she’s gone. Oh and I forgot that my brother was the Ellen of the family. Everyone’s favorite, can do no wrong, but I was the one that took care of mom while dear Ellen didn’t do anything! Yup, this is my family! Isn’t it sad?

@@amahra100 But then she was brought back for the Mama's Family series a year later -- with no reference to the special -- and was the lead character on the show for its entire network and syndicated run -- until 1989. So the special shouldn't be any kind of impediment.

One explanation -- other than the likely one that the writers just wanted to bring the character back without explanation and hoped viewers would forget -- is that Thelma's funeral in the special was supposed to take place at some unspecified date in the future, and Mama's Family just hadn't reached that point in time yet. Sort of a Sci-Fi twist on this great comedy!
