This edition of Drop the Needle, GRAMMY-winning vocalist Samara Joy talks about the magic contained in a succession of classic tracks by a cross-section of the greatest vocalists from the 1950s to today.
At 24, Joy is already setting the music world ablaze. Her 2022 Verve Records debut “Linger Awhile” earned her two well-deserved GRAMMY wins, for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best New Artist - the first time a jazz musician has won the prestigious newcomer’s award since Esperanza Spalding over a decade ago.
Hailing from a family of musicians in the Bronx with roots in gospel, Joy began her journey with jazz at age 17, winning Best Vocalist honors at Lincoln Center’s “Essentially Ellington” competition. Within two years she was a star student of piano legend Barry Harris and bowled over a panel including Christian McBride, Jane Monheit, and Dee Dee Bridgewater to win the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.
Since then, she’s performed sold-out shows all over the world while racking up millions of Tik Tok views and multiple appearances on late night television that have made her a “classic jazz singer from a new generation” (NPR Music).
Track Listings:
John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman: “Lush Life” from “John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman” (1963)
Dee Dee Bridgewater: “Afro Blue” from “Afro Blue” (1974)
Billie Holiday: “Solitude” from “Lover Man” (1958)
Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley: “Save Your Love for Me” from “Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley” (1962)

Wow, Samara really is something, The Nancy Wilson/Cannonball tune just knocked me out!, never heard that version before. The next day I'm in a lovely second-hand shop in posh Harrogate(UK) flicking through the Lp's and there it was! first time I have ever bought a jazz LP on the strength of a ballad, Thank you young Lady!!!
She sure knows how to pick them. Huge fan of both Billy Strayhorn and Johnny Hartman. Just chose Autumn Serenade from that album for my Autumn Equinox radio show and also Billie Holiday singing Autumn In New York. Samara, you definitely 'have the music in you".
Wow, not surprised at her depth of knowledge, but still so impressive!
It pleasantly surprised me 😮
You and your singing are beautiful. I worked with Sarah, Ella Dakota, Gladys Knight and some other greats. And you have it!! And keep on sharing it!
I enjoyed everything about that. I love her music knowledge.
Talented and knowledgeable!
Samara ! Top
Love this video.
Just listen to the songs 🎵 and the sound .
Samara❤
🙏🎼
what is the song at the very beginning of show before Johnny Hartman?
Lushlife by Billy Strayhorn
Why didn’t you correct her? That’s not Annie Ross…. It sounds nothing like Annie Ross
Sure it is! It's Lambert, Hendricks & Ross!
hopefully I can become so mercifully educated
about the various profoundly vibrant and
expressively so one of a kind if however
imperfect histories of music as relates to this
country, in one so powerful ( is it not so? ! ) reference -
of a place where things went so wrong yet beautifulness
yet prevailed if up a muddy, hurt - and hard fought road
to a yet prevailing art of expression of our brothers
and sisters of color - after all that happened - yet
to make such a splash of love using all the ugly
good, and bad - to so effect such obvious beauty
into art, into writing, into transformative influence
hopefully I will learn way more than such as I
have come across up to this day, about these
So profound if simply so profound tones and
loving poetic ways & so artfully powerful
personal narratives - and if hurtfully
Affected so colorful array of stories
if through the rain & sunshine, thru the day
And night - of making something and oh
so many things vibrant out of the hurtfulness
of hate, and the ignorant fear it seems i would
say to teach, but yes - may I be able to relax and
so mercifully research so many stories and sounds
of such so authentically, carefully, if slowly, if
so self compassionately, to develop so much
of what could hopefully help so much of us -
yet hopefully may i make the most of such, all of
our fellow expressions of Love, Art & Power 💛
( of Such as what is contained, at least in concept
or more, or represented, if simply - or reflected in -
or imperfectly Expressed - in this happy heart
if you can see it
----> ( 💛)
and hugs and babies and boys and girls
And birdies and lions and tigers and bears
ok, onto my comment again - bear with me
a bit 💛 ( pls ) just - as it were - trying to
make A bit of fun, if not of me - than of this
opportunity to express, hopefully in somehow
if a bit off the beaten path but yet, if so - helpful
ways, loving and hopefully helpfully, here ....... 💛 )
and though i grew up around much more authentic
sounds, not to knock anyone haha - than alot of my
peers, perhaps - of the 60's, but maybe a ton earlier
into today, or then - yet oh, so much more to reach
into - and hopefully make so much of - to help us,
all of us - in the Reference of Love, Hope &
and comforts of all that is contained
safely withing such As is powerfully
Eternal Sweet Care of what, yes -
and Who we cry up & out for
knowingly or unknowingly
I would say, simply and
So profoundly, like ABC
Into Z And maybe so far
beyond too, even all our
ones of so merciful a make
reaching in, reaching up
Reaching out to us and
our Abba, like children
Thirsty for the sweetest
power of affections so pure
so honest, so powerfully
beyond the lies into the true
of what and who we are
And what & Who we
So obviously are trying
To reach, affect and
be surrounded and
oh so Embraced
( ever even
at such basic
level & upwards -
& yes, so profoundly )
by such a Lover
of lovable ones
not the dirt on the face
but the shining baby
of love under it all
So adorably powerful
A showing of art
so mercifully made
for What 💛seems
as if to be growing
so cold I would say -
In this place here where
Love touched down 💛
but also the hate of such
yet we cry, yet we cry
And the music, the hurt
The frustrations and
The movements of
our histories, if
awkward and if
painfully so - show
it - for so refreshingly
unwavering, unrotatable
unchangeably beautiful
unchaperoned by hate
and simply unweird, just
so powerful, compassions
of a big time yet mercifully
refined - somehow pure
eternal & yet so present
true love for us all and
Each one, somehow
however it comes if
So imperfectly here
through our ones
if so hurt, if so fought
if so abused - yet so
adorably colorful
and poetically
arrayed to so
Always somehow
reach, express,
move & Point up
and out of hate into
Sweetest eternal
Care & Affections
So pure over all
That never was
so yet we cry out for
us and our Abba Above
oh, so much,
so very much -
so needing a place
And feel of simply,
Eternally, presently
And so mercifully
our Home 💛
may Abba so hopefully help us make the
Very most of beauty, sound and histories
for the benefit of our peoples
appreciations for this video
of our sister samara joy
a so beloved, so lovably
powerful evidence of
humble love, that nobody
can deny - may Abba
always love and
protect her & family
( And all of us, too 💛)
be well & may love prevail
truly, and powerfully - for
and by way of all of us
fully, fully, somehow
( brother cam 💛
mucho love happiness 💛💛💛
if super wordy and if meandering
manifesto, volume 9 16 24 haha )💛
