Tip - you are getting new viewers so have hit a nerve - try and spend 30 seconds or less near the start of each summarising your position. Then new viewers are up to speed fast. Over qualified in what for example and what does over qualified mean etc etc. Anyone new should be up to speed very fast.

Im 57, Been working in the Fitness Industry for over 27 yrs, but you have brought this to the forefront of my thinking!! I am thinking that i will find it very hard to find my next job at my age, with Fitness being a younger persons game...
I lost over $70k when everything started to tank. Not because I was in an exchange that went belly up. I was just stupid to hold and because that's what everyone said. I'm still responsible. It just taught me to be a better investor now that I understand more of what could go wrong. I'm a 55 year old IT Contractor and I can honestly say that I have never seen the market so dead. When I speak to agencies they say the same thing. It's really weird.
My company is importing all of its IT from India , putting them in hotels and paying them well below an English IT guy . They barely speak English , don’t smell too good but they are very cheap. In fairness like this guy while it was only happening to the low skilled workers that was ok but diversity hires now take all the jobs with any career progression or decent wages . I’m afraid now you need to be young, , a certain sexual orientation, ethnic or a woman now to get a job worth having. Us old straight white males are surplus to requirements.
I was an IT contractor from 1997 to 2015 and saw the writing on the wall with cheap outsourced overseas workers brought in. First it was India, then the Philipines then Bulgaria etc, etc as the cheapest source of labour was found. Had a chance to work one last contract at a frequent client but decided the 180 mile daily round trip commute and 'direction, control & supervision' rules were such that even 5 years down the line, HMRC have you over a barrel as client HR do not understand the nature of contracting.
yep.. 56 and experiencing the same thing. Was made redundant from a permanent role in technology over a year ago. Also worked as a contractor on and off for many years and looking for either. Very quiet , for sure... Echo your statement about the agencies saying the same thing !
I'm a 53 year old computer programmer (C++, then webby stuff, then mobile). It's basically all I've been doing my entire life. I noticed the market changed (for the worst) in the UK over the last couple of years. I lost my job in November 2023, wasn't able to find another, so my wife and I decided to move back to her home country. I managed to find a job here within the first week (even though I don't speak the language - they were looking for an English speaker).
I am not English I am Greek for a woman of 59 years I am now un-employed first time ever in my life I am from Crete I have found myself having to go back to work I did when I was a teenager Olive picking bar work even having to put deck chairs out I had my own company for many years but sadly I just could not keep it going any longer I have found people who run similar companies to myself find my education and knowledge can't find the word really its like I am feared by the younger people I have to find work as there really is little money for people who don't work in Greece so I am now waiting for the Olive season again its back breaking but its taken me back to my youth at moment I am working in a bar I am lucky my English is OK written not great sometimes just doing the none thinking jobs is OK to do I have less stress now and I fall into my bed but I am always a woman who looks for the positive and I get free Olives and free social life so its not to bad why I am telling you this is think about the lesser work there is no up man ship in this work if you can take the less pay then try it as we age the stress is not good I am getting fitter and much more fresh air ..

There are jobs...but just cleaning, carer, fast food work, factory work, shelf filling...shitty menial jobs with invariably low pay and unsocial hours.
I'd have accepted that, but was told that I think like a manager so not suitable, at another agency I was asked if I spoke polish as all the line managers were poles, so didn't get that one either!
My son is private school educated kare middletons school. Degree worked 12 years in media ,laid off by AI .Applied for 24k a year jobs ,300 applicants and that is just one ,so he has given up his rented flat and moved back with me in cornwall there are so many people going after every job ,He is so depressed, age 42 . I am so sorry we are not alone ,I am thinking about leaving uk . But where good luck ,what is going on ???.❤❤❤❤
You’re certainly not alone mate! 😅 how can we talk to our MPs to help with this situation? Perhaps to propose a bill to retain talent and experience of those over 45s - just thinking out loud. With a new government elected this might be a good time to put our heads together and perhaps build up awareness
Sad but hardly a surprise, we sold off manufacturing and utilities and as a country we dont make things like we used to. For a while we have supported this with financial and design services but if we keep on buying and borrowing without producing then it will not end well. As high end jobs are replaced by those requiring less skilled the jobs are there if you look at the overall numbers cbut the devil is in the detail. Good luck in your search

Royal Enfield now Indian owned built a small design team here, bought a UK frame manufacturers for their designs but mass builds in India, which has a massive import tax. Ditto BSA. Triumph mass manufactures in Thailand yet has union jacks all over it's products. Clothing made for peanuts offshore. Still expensive here for brands. Our landfill filling up with poor quality goods. Yet the architects of this who put many out of skilled work gain honours and vast wealth.
I’m 62 and noticed a change in the jobs market including internal promotions etc from the banking crash of 2008 ! Questions about experience were dropped in favour of we can teach you what you need to know for this role ! Added the perception from employers encouraged by government of the day is young people can learn and adapt better and quicker to roles and can be paid less because they know little or nothing about employment law making it easier for some employers to take advantage? This is all well and good however the pension age keeps rising meaning the over 50s are caught “in no man land “ ! !
The jobs market in the UK is getting worse imo, I've noticed a massive increase in work being outsourced and dare I mention AI....... we also have crappy wages in the UK which really doesnt help the matter, we have a great deal of skilled workers who have no incentive to work in their given fields due to their pay being so low. ALDI store assistants get £13.35 per hour these days, it's going to get to a point where people arent going to bother training for a skill since employers seem to hate paying above £30k
A genuine Living Wage in the year 2024 would have to be £16 an hour (£640 for 40 hours work), therefore Aldi's £13.35 an hour falls short. And the Tory Government's so-called "Living Wage" of £11.44 is farcical, as it is the opposite of a Living Wage.
@@PSYCHIC_PSYCHO how did you come to this conclusion of £16 an hour. I'm guessing you mean before tax so that's even worse. It's more like a case of show me the house and show me the job. I'm probably on around £16 an hour but I have to give travel so it's a 37.5hour week but including travel it's 45 hours I'm on £30.5k. My rent is £1400 a month. I've been looking at where I can work and where I can live and for me all the houses located near the jobs are more expensive.

Middle-aged man here in a declining Northern city. Bullying, blaming, "do it fast not properly" cultures have become widespread from anecdotal experience, especially in public sector and large companies. I worked in London and Cambridge, but quality of life was *much* worse after deducting living costs. Good luck in your job hunt. I hope you find what you want.
Brilliant info ,im 63 and had ill health ,and major ops in last 10 years ,so been on benefits since then,my doc is doing a review to get me back to work next week 😢who is going to employ me ,really worried about this ,unable to sleep 😢and because i live in supported living frightened im gonna lose my home ,i agree we need to get people who have never worked back to work 🤔but to pick on over 60 is wrong 😢
I quit my job as a graphic designer in spring 2023. I was juggling my late mother’s care issues, work itself had become too toxic and I needed minor surgery after a year on the waiting list. My intention was to take a few months off, but at almost 58 I now feel like I want to enjoy the little moments in life. My partner has a fairly good job and my savings have nearly paid off the mortgage. I’m going to take my pension’s 25% tax-free lump sum before the end of the year and become debt-free. I applied for a handful of jobs at the end of 2023, but didn’t even get to the interview stage. As far as I’m concerned, it’s their loss. I now have time to explore the things I wanted to do 30 years ago. Apart from pursuing my old interest in cartoon illustration, I wouldn’t mind doing something that actually helps people. It suits me not paying tax to our war criminal government while they support genocide abroad.
Tommii38 Snap, I know countless people that scaled back following covid. Many have stopped working altogether and will not return. Apart from obviously earning less they also spend alot less. While not working has increased their quality of life it must be murderous for the government coffers

I am 30 currently going through a career change after spending 14 years In the same company and working my way to management level. I have found all companies don't want to take anyone on unless they have been in the sector or role before or are Willing to take a huge pay cut and starting from the bottom. Nobody wants to train staff up anymore or offer anything to help retain staff. The problem is employers having to many options of candidates meaning they can lower the wage of the role
i was at the start of the tech wave - so worked in desk top publishing and marketing and editor stuff - before there were any courses in it. so i never had any paperwork only a CV. i kept having to start at the bottom of companies and being the nerd did all the work and never got promoted to management - coz i was the engine. i made the mistake of working in community i should have gone corporate but i hate suits. eventually i got to the point where i could not stomach starting as the marketing staff again - i never went back... you find ways to survive. don't sell your soul doing stuff your heart tells you is wrong for u. listen to your heart...
I am observing this in the tech industry too. I really do wish you the very best and that you land the new gig you deserve really soon and get some stability and security back for yourself and you family.
Above all, stay positive, I took a career change at 53 ... I'm now 60 and still gainfully employed in the company I joined (and WFH since the pandemic, which is a plus point!). I took a big drop in seniority to change industry, but the salary's still ok and the reduced stress is a real bonus ... in fact I don't go for the promotional opportunities that crop up as I'm very happy doing what I'm doing. A career change might be the way forwards!
@@andrewstorm8240 I'd had a pretty goood career in Headhunting, but my industry was dwindling and following a recommendation from a good friend I switched career completely and moved into the Social Housing sector. Wish I'd done it earlier! ... it was a bit of a leap in the dark at the time, but a leap that's worked out well.
There would be absolutely no such thing as unemployment if it was simply made financially worthwhile for people to SHARE the jobs we NEED people to do and work less.
I’m 44 in UK, work in Clinical research. Stood down this year in April24 due to work life balance issues. Taken me till August to get back into the industry. Now more conscientious of my age as your competing with younger people in their thirties who also have lots of experience and are more tech savvy. Never been out of work before in over 20 years, have been grateful for the break but am even more grateful to having another opportunity.
It's easier than ever to change career nowadays, or at least earn a side-line income. The opportunities are almost limitless. And in a way you're doing it with a YT channel. I completely changed my career when I was 42, from nuclear systems analyst to artist. Whilst the first few years were lean, let's say, it worked out great from that point on. I'm now 56 and I get paid for drawing monsters. Can't beat that.
Wow! Now THAT is a massive shift in direction! I myself am a 54yo. Ran my own photography outfit since 2000, but spent last 5 years as UI/UX designer before relocating to UK a year ago. Getting into UI/UX has been incredibly difficult. Same with photography. Happy if you could share more on how you transitioned successfully into being a full time artist as I’m also quite passionate about pen and ink with watercolour painting and I’m presently considering that as an option. @@TheophilusEmmanuel I'm actually an illustrator rather than an artist (I get told what to draw). Basically I just started to practice art at age 34-ish alongside my day job. Luckily my day job was only 35 hours a week so I was able to practice 30 - 40 hours per week, and did that for about 8 years. Back in those days, before social media, the art scene (game and entertainment in my case) was very focused into a handful of sites and big competitions, where the best game artists and illustrators in the world mixed with us noobs and gave us advice (all that's gone now, we just have the diluted mess of social media). I got noticed through placing in competitions, which I still did even after I went freelance, and that was basically that. There are a lot more options for a career in arts today, and to sell artwork on a side line basis, but the downside is the competition is insane.
I have had to get basic pay work to cover the bills, I usually create animation and 3d work as a self-employed work form home creative. Ai seems to have made an impact in the amount of work I now get. So i now drive vans and do house clearances part time to cover the mortgage, and some chef work at the w/e. Im lucky to have a few qualifications so that helps. Tips: I would try and get anything you can for now as the savings get used up really fast. 52 year old Yorkshire man living in london.

Best of luck in the job market, but as a fully qualified accountant could you not go self employed providing services to small businesses and the self employed, builders, drivers etc. You would be your own boss, work from home with no overheads therefore competitive. Your clientele would grow through word of mouth.
He could, easily, but if he told you that he does that already, he wouldn't have the YT following he's trying to grow - he knows he's stumbled on a 'hot topic' that will eventually pay 'dividends ' (sorry..😂) as his subscribers grow.. I wish him luck, ageism is a real issue & he's facilitating a discussion around it for people (us oldies) who feel less & less seen/heard as we age. Unemployment for the over 50’s will only get worse, especially with AI. Look at your average high-street shops are closing and it’s not all due to them going online. They are closing due to COVID and the high business rate.

Hey, I stumbled across your first video this morning, and identify with everything you have said. I'm 47, have had a 25 year corporate career in Talent Acquisition, some very well known companies on my CV, and have been out of work for a year. Have interviewed for a considerable number of roles, but have fallen short at the final stage a few times. Its so frustrating. I have questioned whether some ageism is taking place... Like you say there doesn't seem to be anyone over the age of 45 in the corporate world, and my LinkedIn feed is full of 20 and 30 something's, I wonder where all the over 40s and 50s are? I do also think that something happened fundamentally to the UK economy post COVID/Truss, I know so many people that have struggled to find work recently, and tech companies in particular have made tens of thousands of people redundant. What's also frustrating is that none of this is reported on, it's a silent epidemic of unemployment it seems to me. For that reason alone your channel is a good idea. It's reassuring to hear someone else in the same position. Best of luck...
At 56 I've also been out of work for a year. made redundant from a high level job in tech and been really struggling. As you said there are loads of people on the market after redundancies at the big telco players in particular ( My line of work) . Definitely a buyer's market at the moment.. I'm overqualified and potentially expensive! In many cases I 've got through a round of 4 interviews with everything seeming positive only to inexpliquably fall at the last hurdle!
I’m from the electronics sector, and retrained in bookkeeping because of health issues. Now though i care after my parents and I feel as life is passing me by. Being older now seems like a sin.
I've been a contractor since 2009, about 10 years younger than you, and I too have had times when its dried up. My strategy here is simply to apply to everything and anything remotely connected to what you do. The reason you do this, particularly on the employment websites and apps, is that it notifies recruiters that you are available. You should be looking to have a light hearted chat with 3 or 4 recruiters a day, you may not want the job, but you have put yourself in the mind of the recruiter. If a targeted approach doesn't work, go for the numbers game.
Have you noticed the recruiters have no sector knowledge, some have the odd A level, a background in sports or the arts? How can they assess a candidate other than through mental shortcuts?
I'm 44 and actually the 'youngster' at my job - all but one colleague is older than me - a couple of them are in their mid-60s, and I view the 2 of them (privately, when talking to my wife) in a sort of 'rich dad/poor dad' way, one is like my aim for how I'd like to be 20 years from now, he takes care of himself, he exercises, he's well groomed, he wears decent clothes etc, and the other.......he's not a slob or anything, he wears a shirt, shaves every day, but he just gives off more of an 'old' vibe, and I say to my wife, I think after 40 a man's eyebrows are indicative - it takes about 30 seconds to trim them once a month, but a lot of blokes just don't bother. These little things make a difference in how people perceive us (not that I'm saying your eyebrows need trimming). My point is, there's old, and then there's old. Look at Biden and Trump - Trump is almost as old as Biden, and pretty much everything Trump says is demented, but he doesn't give off the same 'old' vibe as Biden.

Same here Agency recruitment consultants Don't have a clue, and there sending the cheapest candidate , I'm more or less retired I think 55 cashing out . Waste of time . These recruiters don't understand that If your a manager freelance You can do a section job easily. You don't have to be a site manager, you can drop down into role. Unfortunately now everyone has tickets They practically give them away . Thinking of taxis At least I can work when I want .
61 year old here. Work in IT but earning the same as I did over 20 years ago. Took a break with wife for 8 years to run our own company, which sadly failed, so was lucky to get this a few years ago. It's a small company, not corporate Corporate, despite their pretend wokeness are very ageist. Unfortunately corporations have thrown out a lot of the wisdom along with people of a certain age.
38. Senior Software Engineer (defence/television) 5yrs ago I went job hunting and got multiple interviews. After 2 months I had 3 job offers. I've been job hunting for the last 2 months and have applied to countless roles, phoned/messaged multiple recruiters. In that time I've had 1 interview and fell to the usual trap of a recruiter lying to get a body into an interview. I've also noticed offered salaries are, at best, the same as they were 5 years ago.

Government really needs to get on top of this. It’s workers in their 50s that are peak earners/taxpayers and have the most knowledge. There’s no way the new govt will meet their spending and growth objectives if people like yourself are sat at home not earning.
46 here in Ireland was unemployed almost 6 months after been physically assaulted in last job..just got a full time job kitchen porter..it sucks ,lots of young bossy girls..but hey it will get me to were i want to go..so i just bite my lip and get on with it
It's so exciting to change direction, yes scary, but definitely worth it in the big picture of life. This is a very exciting time for you as your have the choice to change. Short term work (obviously may be less money) the bonus is new experiences, meeting people who can really inspire you and provide you with new life experiences. Exciting.
If you have a driving license apply with Stagecoach to become a bus driver, they train you with pay and once you pass you get paid 34k, once you have a bus licence you can always fall back on it when you need a job.
@@seanbruce2425 Thanks for correcting me, you are right it is only yearly over 65. I still don't think driving is a great option for older workers, where the propensity for illness is higher. At least not as career change. I wonder if there is data on how many fail the medical and at what age. My guess, mostly over 50's.
@@seanbruce2425 I passed my PSV medical at 57 they were more worried about drugs and alcohol than anything else, but I dropped it when I found out the company lied to me about the hours I would be working and being told to break the law, and forced to take out unroadworthy buses, so I dropped the course before it finished so didn't have to pay for the training.
Here’s a tip, if you are older unemployed, look for a sector that has a lot of jobs like IT and retrain. I’m a technical trainer for Networking and Cyber security and I work for a company that retrains people, I spend a lot of time giving references to the learners who have found positions. It works.
Your job depends on people retraining so I would not expect anything other than a glowing report , my large international company now imports IT from India on half the money and put them up in hotels for their 3 month contract. I work with an English 30 year old that left university 4 years ago with an IT degree , he is working on a machine even though he told the company he has a degree . There are a million IT in India alone and many can work from there remotely, why would an English employer pay homegrown people twice the money for the same job?
I feel your pain, I’m 53 and struggling to even get interviews, jobs have been pulled last minute and when I’ve quizzed people in HR or recruiters they quietly admit that employers want young, cheap and compliant individuals.
Yes, that seems to be the case everywhere. I have also been told that they often find reasons to get rid of staff after a year or so, which is done to avoid people attaining 2 years of service, being the point when they would acquire employment rights.
In America there is a government department called the borough of labour statistics (BLS) they have been putting out incorrect data for years because of fake data from HR departments and employment websites. This has led to the government keeping intrest rates higher than they should be because intrest rates effect companies borrowing to invest. Auf wiedersehen pet from the 1980s or boys from the black stuff could be remade in the present time.
You have touched on a nerve here. As a 50 something in Yorkshire I can understand your position. There are a host of points that can be made and I hope you can bring them to the discussion. I would urge others to consider self employment, if employers are unwilling to give you a job create your own. Even better if it is based around a hobby or interest, at least there is a fun factor as well. Accept that you may have reached a stage where your earning capacity is perhaps not what it was and reorganise your life accordingly.
The problem with self-employment it’s not what it cracked up to be. Getting a business bank account can be a nightmare. When you pay NI it doesn't cover your state pension because you pay a certain class? Finding customers/clients is another challenge advertising is expensive today.
Im 36 and have just come off 12 years at sea on the Ferries.(P&0/DFDS) , have a language degree too. It's taken me a good 6 months to find a job. It's hard work and employers even ghost you after interviews. I do feel like its almost impossible to get a job at the moment, hope your ok.
I'm sorry to hear. But unfortunately I've been jobless for a year now. NOT on any benefits from the government either, and I'm struggling on food and living, got 20 years work experience in many industries. From manufacturing to customer services to cleaning to delivery driver, security, aviation operations officer, I've done many jobs and I've learnt now. Nothing is coming up for me. I've just applied for another job on Indeed and waiting for a response the job is 40 miles away. On a minimum wage, I'm 40 and healthy. I just think UK is going down the toilets. The mental health issue on people in public is obvious. We are struggling
If people don't have structure and a purpose in life they will begin experiencing mental health issues. Most people define themselves by their job, they need to find other another outlet.
There’s a Financial Accountant job vacancy in the company I’m working for but it’s permanent based in London. Looking for part/full Qualified Accountant. You need to work in the office between Tuesday and Thursday but can wfh anywhere in the UK on Monday and Fridays. No age discrimination here… some of my colleagues are around your age as they prefer experience people.
I would use this experience as a financial audit and consider your total financial position. eg if you have a pension you could opt to take the 25% tax free withdrawal to pay off a mortgage etc or take early retirement. You just need to bridge the gap between now and state retirement age (approx 12 years). Look at what savings you have and what is available to you from pensions etc if you have one. You don't need to retire completely but could look at taking a part time position if your finances would allow that. I am 56 this year and working towards retiring early. I am going to be overpaying my mortgage from next year in order to do this; would be sooner but I have other things to sort first. In 4 years my mortgage will be paid off instead of 8 years.
Not sure this is accurate. Bosses like new/good ideas. Bosses like constructive feedback. Bosses don't like people trying to tell them their job but actually have no idea. Bosses also don't like people being stuck in old ways and need you to cope with fast changing environments. That is fact in todays high paid jobs. If you are happy in asda or mcdonalds, then more power to you, stand up to your bosses there. :-)

I started in the civil service 3-4 years ago, sign up to civil service job alerts, a lot of people starting with me were in their late 50s, some early 60s. The application process was only interested in experience!
I am 66 years old today. I became unable to do drywall taping about 6 months after my 65th birthday. So I made up resumes and went around to Sleggs lumber, Rona and a few paint stores as I have also been a painter for 2 decades. To sum-up the results, I did not get any replies. I thought about it for many days and weeks and I honestly believe that for every person over 50 years of age who is looking for a job, there are at least 50 younger people looking for the same jobs. The thing is, that if you were an employer and had to hire out of these people (demographic), then wouldn't you want to give a younger person a job, so that at least someone could have a chance to have a life, rather than an older person who has already had years of employment and has things such as possessions, that a younger person wouldn't probably have achieved yet? And why should an older person have to worry about getting work anyway? Why aren't older people simply allowed to relax and enjoy old age? I believe that nobody wants to be associated with someone who is over 50. It's a sort of a stigma that is held against older people. And younger people feel that they have a right to work, as their parents did.
I commented the other day. So I'm glad to see that you've started a new career already. To all the viewers, when you mention about the younger co workers and you feel disadvantaged, don't. What we have as mature adults is just that...maturity. If a company looks at you as older their short sightedness is probably costing that company a lot of money. Mature individuals were raised knowing the valve of customers, their word ment something, loyalty ment something. Today's younger people (for the most part) know entitlement and nothing else. If I were in a position to hire people I would hire a mature person anytime. 0nce again I would suggest a community of people with skills that they could help each other with. You see the same thing in other communities where they help and hire their own.

I have had a few Job Interviews whilst i had been looking for Driving Jobs. The Interviews did go very Well. Afterwards, You never recieved any Feedback or wether I had been Successful. Each time, my Suit of Armour began to become much weaker, I have lost count at how Jobs i have Applied to and if i have been Invited for an Interview. Given how few videos you've put out, to pull 30K views in 4 days is fantastic. I think you could make a go of the youtube and do well out of it. I've seen some of channels for the 50+ age bracket about living solo etc. and they are nothing special but pulling in the subs. People over 50 not working have plenty of time to watch youtube and comment, so a lucrative market for monetisation.
We are both 66years old, I run a cleaning and maintenance company here in London so my long term customers are okay new customers are reluctant as soon as they see my face.My husband, an engineer by training, just takes on building work,primarily extensions, as he was finding no work from his field particularly government work as the interviewers were all much younger than him and saw him as unable to cope with tech! So he is hod carrying bricks and mortar carrying this week. Of course this will only continue until we invariably fall ill.
We needed a Mr Fixit back in Australia for my parents' house. #1 was a man in his late 30s/40s - botched up first job #2 was in his early 70s. Did great work, and took pride in it. I wish we'd found him earlier. I wish you and your husband well.

If I were in your position I would look at career change, new openings and opportunities, you will have loads of work experience and not just in accountancy, transferable skills. Don't be put off by your age, I got offered a new job at 64.
Hate to say this but my mum suffered with this in her early 50’s. Finally, she found a job that she liked but poor health forced her in to early retirement. Just look after yourself, stay positive and discuss/spread the message.
Might be the summer but it looks barren out there in IT. I was really surprised with the lack of job postings in the certain area i work in. Like a few hundred positions open around london, a few years ago(pre covid) number of postings was in the low thousands around london. I'm also considering taking a cut on pay just to increase landing something this year, in hopes that next year things get better.
Been a caretaker for the last ten years, now coming up to 60. For the most part caretaker roles are not for the young. Money is not very good, but it will tide me over until I retire. If you are looking for more money then more responsibility will follow allow with stress. Sharing your experience on TH-cam will help you and others and who knows where it will lead. Hello my friend, sorry you are going through this. What I needed to do was completely change my life, I had to sell everything and go abroad to find out who I was and what I really wanted from life. I started looking at my own skills in a completely different way and start something totally new. I became a painter and sell online now. I think there comes a point where we need to assess our lives, and not be scared of a change or a new outlook or challenge ...we all know what's coming ....online work is the best..in whatever new ways you can come up with..there is always possibilities always..think out of the box. @@johnristheanswer My hearing is fine and his previous video has no low sound issues but this one does. I also have youtube channels. The trick is to check the sound after recording and use a video editor to boost the volume. Better still get the mic levels correct before recording.
Take a look at civil service, council and housing association, NHS websites use their guidance when completing supporting statements, these can be challenge as recruiters are looking for more than a cv. Also living off my savings now , and we still have a few years left on our mortgage so they wouldn’t last too long at the alarming rate we’re going through said savings. We had intended working the last 8-9 years and using that as our retirement fund , but it looks like we are going to have to move out of Hertfordshire and downsize/value …rather humbling to say the least.
One element to consider is that sometimes (I can only speculate as to how often) relatively strategic or senior roles are already recruited before you walk through the door -unbeknownst to you, you're only there to make up the numbers. Although departmental management might already know who they want in the role (someone from a competitor, customer, other business relationship or recommendation) the HR department will insist on identifying other candidates so there's a mix and that's very often dictated as company policy -HR sticking their oar in! This can waste a lot of people's time. You can go in and have a fantastic interview process by all metrics then get pounced by the guy that was always the front runner before the process ever began -it's even a single horse race sometimes.
Isnt this a thing that tends to happen in govt roles where a job opens and internal candidates apply but they must be shown to be "fair and open" and the job gets opened for the public in general and an internal candidate will be getting the job so its all a show and tokenistic

There are jobs aplenty in the Midlands. Its a matter of whether a person is willing (or can afford) to work for the pay. If you have a family and are required to pay rent and council tax, there must be very little difference in absolute terms between not working and having a job that pays minimum wage
Minimum wage pays minimum bills. Most people need ACTUALLY SUFFICIANT wages. The implementation of the minimum wage has resulted in it being the ONLY WAGE for most people!
One of the worst things is the Universal Credit taper. If you find work and it's part time so the pay is naturally low you will lose 55p in the £1 of your UC so it's effectively a massive tax on part time work. Decades ago you could work part time up to 16hours a week and it not affect your benefits...it's insane
You are correct. Rent and council tax paid can be worth up to £800 a month. Other benefits can give you - as a couple - up to a total of £2000 tax free. You need a £25K salary to equal that. So a £30K salary for this profile of person is in reality more like £5K for a 5 day week.

This chap, the video clearly took him as long to make as it does to watch it (9 mins), and he's got 8.6k views on it already after 6 days. He could make 6 of these a day and it'd be an hour's work, and it's truly passive income - he doesn't need to re-record this video, or do anything with it except leave it be. And not only that, but it's not just youtube ad revenue, most educational youtubers make their money by getting their videos sponsored by businesses.
I think the job market is poor at the moment. The stats say there are 900k jobs in the UK, but with 30% being ghost jobs there are in fact far less than that. Add the endemic ageism, and older people are in for a tough time getting a job. I think a lot of automation in job roles with AI isn't helping. I would be interested in your thoughts of the UK economy. I'm fairly pessimistic about growth.
As I posted on your first post. There are jobs, but you'd need to stop thinking of yourself as a 'Professional'. You're now unemployed. Many peoole will only consider jobs on the same level they had. Doing my previous, job after redundancy. I saw a kitchen pot washer in a expensive suit. I mentioned this to him. Turned out he had his own manufacturing company in Rhodesia, that had been confiscated and given to Mugabes cronies. He fled with his family here. But wasn't too proud to do this job.

I think that the number 1 thing in your 50s is to keep in shape. Go on long walks alone etc. It helps alot. Eat healthy and less junk ans sweets. This is extremely important. For job search i had to re-engineer my self educate my self go on evening education provided by the government. If you are technical i recommend electrical, aircondition, cooling, heating or plumbing education... All those are great for an 50 + years old man. It keeps you in shape and you can even get a little money. I know an electrician who is 85 years old who still works small jobs. Everything is about health.
You have to look what you have, and judging your background, a very nice home, mortgage paid?! So reflective what you have, what regular hobby you do. How desperate you are for money or is the mortgage paid, your kids grown up etc... Maybe more better than others as you can choose a job similar to me, we can choose but not go into savings too much. If you drive you can look further afield. If little money coming in, colleges to funding for free trade courses i e painting, tiling, plumbing etc then get a part time job whilst your investing in those courses... Just a thought.
I'm 22 years old and a big I.T./tech guy. I've been struggling to find a job for quite some time now, and I just feel like a worthless pile of sh*t. I have no idea why, other than that they're overly obsessed with credentials (which I do not possess or have any real way of getting), and pay is particularly appalling. It shouldn't be the case that an 'entry-level' role has so many pre-requisites, but pays no better (or only marginally) than something at Lidl/Aldi. It's just so frustrating, because I have 3 friends in I.T. and one in tech, and they always end up coming to me whenever they have problems, and I can't seem to get anywhere. Wish I'd just stayed studying engineering all those years ago, or just went to it straight away rather than wasting my time on the promise of a possible I.T. apprenticeship - which I kind of buggered myself over for.
Tip - you are getting new viewers so have hit a nerve - try and spend 30 seconds or less near the start of each summarising your position. Then new viewers are up to speed fast. Over qualified in what for example and what does over qualified mean etc etc.

I'm a 55 year old IT Contractor and I can honestly say that I have never seen the market so dead. When I speak to agencies they say the same thing. It's really weird.
I've noticed that as well. It was so easy to get an interview a year ago. Now, it's hard to even get to the interview stage.
My company is importing all of its IT from India , putting them in hotels and paying them well below an English IT guy . They barely speak English , don’t smell too good but they are very cheap. In fairness like this guy while it was only happening to the low skilled workers that was ok but diversity hires now take all the jobs with any career progression or decent wages . I’m afraid now you need to be young, , a certain sexual orientation, ethnic or a woman now to get a job worth having. Us old straight white males are surplus to requirements.
I was an IT contractor from 1997 to 2015 and saw the writing on the wall with cheap outsourced overseas workers brought in. First it was India, then the Philipines then Bulgaria etc, etc as the cheapest source of labour was found.
Had a chance to work one last contract at a frequent client but decided the 180 mile daily round trip commute and 'direction, control & supervision' rules were such that even 5 years down the line, HMRC have you over a barrel as client HR do not understand the nature of contracting.

I'm a 53 year old computer programmer (C++, then webby stuff, then mobile). It's basically all I've been doing my entire life. I noticed the market changed (for the worst) in the UK over the last couple of years. I lost my job in November 2023, wasn't able to find another, so my wife and I decided to move back to her home country. I managed to find a job here within the first week (even though I don't speak the language - they were looking for an English speaker).
I am not English I am Greek for a woman of 59 years I am now un-employed first time ever in my life I am from Crete I have found myself having to go back to work I did when I was a teenager Olive picking bar work even having to put deck chairs out I had my own company for many years but sadly I just could not keep it going any longer I have found people who run similar companies to myself find my education and knowledge can't find the word really its like I am feared by the younger people I have to find work as there really is little money for people who don't work in Greece so I am now waiting for the Olive season again its back breaking but its taken me back to my youth at moment I am working in a bar I am lucky my English is OK written not great sometimes just doing the none thinking jobs is OK to do I have less stress now and I fall into my bed but I am always a woman who looks for the positive and I get free Olives and free social life so its not to bad why I am telling you this is think about the lesser work there is no up man ship in this work if you can take the less pay then try it as we age the stress is not good I am getting fitter and much more fresh air ..

Degree worked 12 years in media ,laid off by AI .Applied for 24k a year jobs ,300 applicants and that is just one ,so he has given up his rented flat and moved back with me in cornwall there are so many people going after every job ,He is so depressed, age 42 . Sad but hardly a surprise, we sold off manufacturing and utilities and as a country we dont make things like we used to. For a while we have supported this with financial and design services but if we keep on buying and borrowing without producing then it will not end well. Royal Enfield now Indian owned built a small design team here, bought a UK frame manufacturers for their designs but mass builds in India, which has a massive import tax. Ditto BSA. I’m 62 and noticed a change in the jobs market including internal promotions etc from the banking crash of 2008 ! Questions about experience were dropped in favour of we can teach you what you need to know for this role ! Added the perception from employers encouraged by government of the day is young people can learn and adapt better and quicker to roles and can be paid less because they know little or nothing about employment law making it easier for some employers to take advantage? This is all well and good however the pension age keeps rising meaning the over 50s are caught “in no man land “ ! !
The jobs market in the UK is getting worse imo, I've noticed a massive increase in work being outsourced and dare I mention AI....... we also have crappy wages in the UK which really doesnt help the matter, we have a great deal of skilled workers who have no incentive to work in their given fields due to their pay being so low. ALDI store assistants get £13.35 per hour these days, it's going to get to a point where people arent going to bother training for a skill since employers seem to hate paying above £30k

A genuine Living Wage in the year 2024 would have to be £16 an hour (£640 for 40 hours work), therefore Aldi's £13.35 an hour falls short. And the Tory Government's so-called "Living Wage" of £11.44 is farcical, as it is the opposite of a Living Wage.

I'm probably on around £16 an hour but I have to give travel so it's a 37.5hour week but including travel it's 45 hours I'm on £30.5k. My rent is £1400 a month. I've been looking at where I can work and where I can live and for me all the houses located near the jobs are more expensive.

Bullying, blaming, "do it fast not properly" cultures have become widespread from anecdotal experience, especially in public sector and large companies. I quit my job as a graphic designer in spring 2023. I was juggling my late mother’s care issues, work itself had become too toxic and I needed minor surgery after a year on the waiting list. My intention was to take a few months off, but at almost 58 I now feel like I want to enjoy the little moments in life. My partner has a fairly good job and my savings have nearly paid off the mortgage. I’m going to take my pension’s 25% tax-free lump sum before the end of the year and become debt-free. I applied for a handful of jobs at the end of 2023, but didn’t even get to the interview stage. As far as I’m concerned, it’s their loss. I now have time to explore the things I wanted to do 30 years ago. Apart from pursuing my old interest in cartoon illustration, I wouldn’t mind doing something that actually helps people. It suits me not paying tax to our war criminal government while they support genocide abroad.

I am 30 currently going through a career change after spending 14 years In the same company and working my way to management level. I have found all companies don't want to take anyone on unless they have been in the sector or role before or are Willing to take a huge pay cut and starting from the bottom. Nobody wants to train staff up anymore or offer anything to help retain staff.
The problem is employers having to many options of candidates meaning they can lower the wage of the role
i was at the start of the tech wave - so worked in desk top publishing and marketing and editor stuff - before there were any courses in it. so i never had any paperwork only a CV. i kept having to start at the bottom of companies and being the nerd did all the work and never got promoted to management - coz i was the engine. i made the mistake of working in community i should have gone corporate but i hate suits. eventually i got to the point where i could not stomach starting as the marketing staff again - i never went back... you find ways to survive. don't sell your soul doing stuff your heart tells you is wrong for u. listen to your heart...
I am observing this in the tech industry too. I really do wish you the very best and that you land the new gig you deserve really soon and get some stability and security back for yourself and you family.
Above all, stay positive, I took a career change at 53 ... I'm now 60 and still gainfully employed in the company I joined (and WFH since the pandemic, which is a plus point!). I took a big drop in seniority to change industry, but the salary's still ok and the reduced stress is a real bonus ... in fact I don't go for the promotional opportunities that crop up as I'm very happy doing what I'm doing. A career change might be the way forwards!

@@andrewstorm8240 I'd had a pretty goood career in Headhunting, but my industry was dwindling and following a recommendation from a good friend I switched career completely and moved into the Social Housing sector. Wish I'd done it earlier! ... it was a bit of a leap in the dark at the time, but a leap that's worked out well.
There would be absolutely no such thing as unemployment if it was simply made financially worthwhile for people to SHARE the jobs we NEED people to do and work less.

I’m 44 in UK, work in Clinical research. Stood down this year in April24 due to work life balance issues. Taken me till August to get back into the industry. Now more conscientious of my age as your competing with younger people in their thirties who also have lots of experience and are more tech savvy. Never been out of work before in over 20 years, have been grateful for the break but am even more grateful to having another opportunity.

It's easier than ever to change career nowadays, or at least earn a side-line income. The opportunities are almost limitless. And in a way you're doing it with a YT channel. I completely changed my career when I was 42, from nuclear systems analyst to artist. Whilst the first few years were lean, let's say, it worked out great from that point on. I'm now 56 and I get paid for drawing monsters. Can't beat that.

Getting into UI/UX has been incredibly difficult. Same with photography. @@TheophilusEmmanuel I'm actually an illustrator rather than an artist (I get told what to draw). Basically I just started to practice art at age 34-ish alongside my day job. Luckily my day job was only 35 hours a week so I was able to practice 30 - 40 hours per week, and did that for about 8 years. Back in those days, before social media, the art scene (game and entertainment in my case) was very focused into a handful of sites and big competitions, where the best game artists and illustrators in the world mixed with us noobs and gave us advice (all that's gone now, we just have the diluted mess of social media). I got noticed through placing in competitions, which I still did even after I went freelance, and that was basically that. There are a lot more options for a career in arts today, and to sell artwork on a side line basis, but the downside is the competition is insane.
I have had to get basic pay work to cover the bills, I usually create animation and 3d work as a self-employed work form home creative. Ai seems to have made an impact in the amount of work I now get. So i now drive vans and do house clearances part time to cover the mortgage, and some chef work at the w/e. Im lucky to have a few qualifications so that helps. Tips: I would try and get anything you can for now as the savings get used up really fast. 52 year old Yorkshire man living in london.

Best of luck in the job market, but as a fully qualified accountant could you not go self employed providing services to small businesses and the self employed, builders, drivers etc. You would be your own boss, work from home with no overheads therefore competitive. Your clientele would grow through word of mouth.

Hey, I stumbled across your first video this morning, and identify with everything you have said. I'm 47, have had a 25 year corporate career in Talent Acquisition, some very well known companies on my CV, and have been out of work for a year. Have interviewed for a considerable number of roles, but have fallen short at the final stage a few times. Its so frustrating. I have questioned whether some ageism is taking place... Like you say there doesn't seem to be anyone over the age of 45 in the corporate world, and my LinkedIn feed is full of 20 and 30 something's, I wonder where all the over 40s and 50s are? I do also think that something happened fundamentally to the UK economy post COVID/Truss, I know so many people that have struggled to find work recently, and tech companies in particular have made tens of thousands of people redundant. What's also frustrating is that none of this is reported on, it's a silent epidemic of unemployment it seems to me. For that reason alone your channel is a good idea. It's reassuring to hear someone else in the same position. Best of luck...
At 56 I've also been out of work for a year. made redundant from a high level job in tech and been really struggling. As you said there are loads of people on the market after redundancies at the big telco players in particular ( My line of work) . Definitely a buyer's market at the moment.. I'm overqualified and potentially expensive! In many cases I 've got through a round of 4 interviews with everything seeming positive only to inexpliquably fall at the last hurdle!
I’m from the electronics sector, and retrained in bookkeeping because of health issues. Now though i care after my parents and I feel as life is passing me by. Being older now seems like a sin.
I've been a contractor since 2009, about 10 years younger than you, and I too have had times when its dried up. My strategy here is simply to apply to everything and anything remotely connected to what you do. The reason you do this, particularly on the employment websites and apps, is that it notifies recruiters that you are available. You should be looking to have a light hearted chat with 3 or 4 recruiters a day, you may not want the job, but you have put yourself in the mind of the recruiter. If a targeted approach doesn't work, go for the numbers game.
Have you noticed the recruiters have no sector knowledge, some have the odd A level, a background in sports or the arts? How can they assess a candidate other than through mental shortcuts?
I'm 44 and actually the 'youngster' at my job - all but one colleague is older than me - a couple of them are in their mid-60s, and I view the 2 of them (privately, when talking to my wife) in a sort of 'rich dad/poor dad' way, one is like my aim for how I'd like to be 20 years from now, he takes care of himself, he exercises, he's well groomed, he wears decent clothes etc, and the other.......he's not a slob or anything, he wears a shirt, shaves every day, but he just gives off more of an 'old' vibe, and I say to my wife, I think after 40 a man's eyebrows are indicative - it takes about 30 seconds to trim them once a month, but a lot of blokes just don't bother. These little things make a difference in how people perceive us (not that I'm saying your eyebrows need trimming).
My point is, there's old, and then there's old. Look at Biden and Trump - Trump is almost as old as Biden, and pretty much everything Trump says is demented, but he doesn't give off the same 'old' vibe as Biden.

5yrs ago I went job hunting and got multiple interviews. After 2 months I had 3 job offers.
I've been job hunting for the last 2 months and have applied to countless roles, phoned/messaged multiple recruiters. In that time I've had 1 interview and fell to the usual trap of a recruiter lying to get a body into an interview.
I've also noticed offered salaries are, at best, the same as they were 5 years ago.

It’s workers in their 50s that are peak earners/taxpayers and have the most knowledge. There’s no way the new govt will meet their spending and growth objectives if people like yourself are sat at home not earning.

It's so exciting to change direction, yes scary, but definitely worth it in the big picture of life. This is a very exciting time for you as your have the choice to change. Short term work (obviously may be less money) the bonus is new experiences, meeting people who can really inspire you and provide you with new life experiences. Exciting.
If you have a driving license apply with Stagecoach to become a bus driver, they train you with pay and once you pass you get paid 34k, once you have a bus licence you can always fall back on it when you need a job.
Over 45 the PSV medical is every 5 years, over 60 it is yearly. I don't think this is a optimal job for an older worker.

I passed my PSV medical at 57 they were more worried about drugs and alcohol than anything else, but I dropped it when I found out the company lied to me about the hours I would be working and being told to break the law, and forced to take out unroadworthy buses, so I dropped the course before it finished so didn't have to pay for the training.

Here’s a tip, if you are older unemployed, look for a sector that has a lot of jobs like IT and retrain. I’m a technical trainer for Networking and Cyber security and I work for a company that retrains people, I spend a lot of time giving references to the learners who have found positions. It works.
Your job depends on people retraining so I would not expect anything other than a glowing report , my large international company now imports IT from India on half the money and put them up in hotels for their 3 month contract. I work with an English 30 year old that left university 4 years ago with an IT degree , he is working on a machine even though he told the company he has a degree . There are a million IT in India alone and many can work from there remotely, why would an English employer pay homegrown people twice the money for the same job?
I feel your pain, I’m 53 and struggling to even get interviews, jobs have been pulled last minute and when I’ve quizzed people in HR or recruiters they quietly admit that employers want young, cheap and compliant individuals.
Yes, that seems to be the case everywhere. I have also been told that they often find reasons to get rid of staff after a year or so, which is done to avoid people attaining 2 years of service, being the point when they would acquire employment rights.
They would never EVER admit that.

In America there is a government department called the borough of labour statistics (BLS) they have been putting out incorrect data for years because of fake data from HR departments and employment websites.
This has led to the government keeping intrest rates higher than they should be because intrest rates effect companies borrowing to invest.

You have touched on a nerve here. As a 50 something in Yorkshire I can understand your position. There are a host of points that can be made and I hope you can bring them to the discussion. I would urge others to consider self employment, if employers are unwilling to give you a job create your own. Even better if it is based around a hobby or interest, at least there is a fun factor as well. Accept that you may have reached a stage where your earning capacity is perhaps not what it was and reorganise your life accordingly.
The problem with self-employment it’s not what it cracked up to be. Getting a business bank account can be a nightmare. When you pay NI it doesn't cover your state pension because you pay a certain class? Finding customers/clients is another challenge advertising is expensive today.
There are no problems getting a business bank account.

NOT on any benefits from the government either, and I'm struggling on food and living, got 20 years work experience in many industries. From manufacturing to customer services to cleaning to delivery driver, security, aviation operations officer, I've done many jobs and I've learnt now. Nothing is coming up for me. I've just applied for another job on Indeed and waiting for a response the job is 40 miles away. On a minimum wage, I'm 40 and healthy. I just think UK is going down the toilets. There’s a Financial Accountant job vacancy in the company I’m working for but it’s permanent based in London. Looking for part/full Qualified Accountant. You need to work in the office between Tuesday and Thursday but can wfh anywhere in the UK on Monday and Fridays. No age discrimination here… some of my colleagues are around your age as they prefer experience people.
I would use this experience as a financial audit and consider your total financial position. eg if you have a pension you could opt to take the 25% tax free withdrawal to pay off a mortgage etc or take early retirement. You just need to bridge the gap between now and state retirement age (approx 12 years). Look at what savings you have and what is available to you from pensions etc if you have one. You don't need to retire completely but could look at taking a part time position if your finances would allow that. I am 56 this year and working towards retiring early. I am going to be overpaying my mortgage from next year in order to do this; would be sooner but I have other things to sort first. In 4 years my mortgage will be paid off instead of 8 years.

Not sure this is accurate. Bosses like new/good ideas. Bosses like constructive feedback. Bosses don't like people trying to tell them their job but actually have no idea. Bosses also don't like people being stuck in old ways and need you to cope with fast changing environments. That is fact in todays high paid jobs.

I am 66 years old today. I became unable to do drywall taping about 6 months after my 65th birthday. So I made up resumes and went around to Sleggs lumber, Rona and a few paint stores as I have also been a painter for 2 decades. To sum-up the results, I did not get any replies. I thought about it for many days and weeks and I honestly believe that for every person over 50 years of age who is looking for a job, there are at least 50 younger people looking for the same jobs. The thing is, that if you were an employer and had to hire out of these people (demographic), then wouldn't you want to give a younger person a job, so that at least someone could have a chance to have a life, rather than an older person who has already had years of employment and has things such as possessions, that a younger person wouldn't probably have achieved yet? And why should an older person have to worry about getting work anyway? Why aren't older people simply allowed to relax and enjoy old age? I believe that nobody wants to be associated with someone who is over 50. It's a sort of a stigma that is held against older people. And younger people feel that they have a right to work, as their parents did.

What we have as mature adults is just that...maturity. If a company looks at you as older their short sightedness is probably costing that company a lot of money. I have had a few Job Interviews whilst i had been looking for Driving Jobs. The Interviews did go very Well. Afterwards, You never recieved any Feedback or wether I had been Successful. Each time, my Suit of Armour began to become much weaker, I have lost count at how Jobs i have Applied to and if i have been Invited for an Interview. Given how few videos you've put out, to pull 30K views in 4 days is fantastic. I think you could make a go of the youtube and do well out of it. I've seen some of channels for the 50+ age bracket about living solo etc. and they are nothing special but pulling in the subs. People over 50 not working have plenty of time to watch youtube and comment, so a lucrative market for monetisation.
We are both 66years old, I run a cleaning and maintenance company here in London so my long term customers are okay new customers are reluctant as soon as they see my face.My husband, an engineer by training, just takes on building work,primarily extensions, as he was finding no work from his field particularly government work as the interviewers were all much younger than him and saw him as unable to cope with tech! So he is hod carrying bricks and mortar carrying this week. Of course this will only continue until we invariably fall ill.

Hate to say this but my mum suffered with this in her early 50’s. Finally, she found a job that she liked but poor health forced her in to early retirement.

I was really surprised with the lack of job postings in the certain area i work in. Like a few hundred positions open around london, a few years ago(pre covid) number of postings was in the low thousands around london.
I'm also considering taking a cut on pay just to increase landing something this year, in hopes that next year things get better.
Been a caretaker for the last ten years, now coming up to 60. For the most part caretaker roles are not for the young. Money is not very good, but it will tide me over until I retire. If you are looking for more money then more responsibility will follow allow with stress. Sharing your experience on TH-cam will help you and others and who knows where it will lead. Might be a new revenue stream.
Hello my friend, sorry you are going through this. What I needed to do was completely change my life, I had to sell everything and go abroad to find out who I was and what I really wanted from life. I started looking at my own skills in a completely different way and start something totally new. I became a painter and sell online now. I think there comes a point where we need to assess our lives, and not be scared of a change or a new outlook or challenge ...we all know what's coming ....online work is the best..in whatever new ways you can come up with..there is always possibilities always..think out of the box. Take a look at civil service, council and housing association, NHS websites use their guidance when completing supporting statements, these can be challenge as recruiters are looking for more than a cv. Good luck,

One element to consider is that sometimes (I can only speculate as to how often) relatively strategic or senior roles are already recruited before you walk through the door -unbeknownst to you, you're only there to make up the numbers.
Although departmental management might already know who they want in the role (someone from a competitor, customer, other business relationship or recommendation) the HR department will insist on identifying other candidates so there's a mix and that's very often dictated as company policy -HR sticking their oar in!
This can waste a lot of people's time. You can go in and have a fantastic interview process by all metrics then get pounced by the guy that was always the front runner before the process ever began -it's even a single horse race sometimes.
Isnt this a thing that tends to happen in govt roles where a job opens and internal candidates apply but they must be shown to be "fair and open" and the job gets opened for the public in general and an internal candidate will be getting the job so its all a show and tokenistic

One of the worst things is the Universal Credit taper. If you find work and it's part time so the pay is naturally low you will lose 55p in the £1 of your UC so it's effectively a massive tax on part time work. Decades ago you could work part time up to 16hours a week and it not affect your benefits...it's insane
You are correct. Rent and council tax paid can be worth up to £800 a month. Other benefits can give you - as a couple - up to a total of £2000 tax free. You need a £25K salary to equal that. So a £30K salary for this profile of person is in reality more like £5K for a 5 day week.

This chap, the video clearly took him as long to make as it does to watch it (9 mins), and he's got 8.6k views on it already after 6 days. He could make 6 of these a day and it'd be an hour's work, and it's truly passive income - he doesn't need to re-record this video, or do anything with it except leave it be. And not only that, but it's not just youtube ad revenue, most educational youtubers make their money by getting their videos sponsored by businesses.

I think the job market is poor at the moment. The stats say there are 900k jobs in the UK, but with 30% being ghost jobs there are in fact far less than that.
Add the endemic ageism, and older people are in for a tough time getting a job.
I think a lot of automation in job roles with AI isn't helping.
I would be interested in your thoughts of the UK economy. I'm fairly pessimistic about growth.

As I posted on your first post. There are jobs, but you'd need to stop thinking of yourself as a 'Professional'. You're now unemployed. Many peoole will only consider jobs on the same level they had. Doing my previous, job after redundancy. I saw a kitchen pot washer in a expensive suit. I mentioned this to him. Turned out he had his own manufacturing company in Rhodesia, that had been confiscated and given to Mugabes cronies. He fled with his family here. But wasn't too proud to do this job.

Too many graduates, chasing too few well paid jobs . Jobs expanding retail , care , taxi drivers, online .
It is too competitive.
Brexit has made thinks worse. U.K. is not a place for new companies , new industries.
Bureaucracy and tax rates are awful .
With higher immigration rates taking plain jobs too.

Nope. It's job COMPETITION - from immigrants! INDEPENDENCE from the eu SHOULD have be great (if correctly implemented) Sadly however for the past near decade we have been ruled over by remainers.

I think that the number 1 thing in your 50s is to keep in shape. Go on long walks alone etc. It helps alot. Eat healthy and less junk ans sweets. This is extremely important.
For job search i had to re-engineer my self educate my self go on evening education provided by the government. If you are technical i recommend electrical, aircondition, cooling, heating or plumbing education... All those are great for an 50 + years old man. It keeps you in shape and you can even get a little money. I know an electrician who is 85 years old who still works small jobs. Everything is about health.
Btw, never put your age on a resume.
Having physically burnt out a few years ago it was a big warning sign to be more health conscious...still struggle with it though
You have to look what you have, and judging your background, a very nice home, mortgage paid?! So reflective what you have, what regular hobby you do. How desperate you are for money or is the mortgage paid, your kids grown up etc... Maybe more better than others as you can choose a job similar to me, we can choose but not go into savings too much. If you drive you can look further afield. If little money coming in, colleges to funding for free trade courses i e painting, tiling, plumbing etc then get a part time job whilst your investing in those courses... Just a thought.

I'm 22 years old and a big I.T./tech guy. I've been struggling to find a job for quite some time now, and I just feel like a worthless pile of sh*t. I have no idea why, other than that they're overly obsessed with credentials (which I do not possess or have any real way of getting), and pay is particularly appalling. It shouldn't be the case that an 'entry-level' role has so many pre-requisites, but pays no better (or only marginally) than something at Lidl/Aldi. It's just so frustrating, because I have 3 friends in I.T. and one in tech, and they always end up coming to me whenever they have problems, and I can't seem to get anywhere. Wish I'd just stayed studying engineering all those years ago, or just went to it straight away rather than wasting my time on the promise of a possible I.T. apprenticeship - which I kind of buggered myself over for.
