Seriously! As an non-farmer I'm amazed at how quickly and how much things have changed. I could watch Dougo describe his use of all these old pieces of equipment. I'm sure, for their time, they were revolutionary and amazing. I bet Dougo had similar conversations with Merlin back in the day! :)

Can you imagine what the young bucks of today would think of operating an open station combine or even a trailed 7.5ft cut bagger combine behind a 60 hp tractor where 15acres per day was a massive achievement. When you stopped for the day you had to then go round and pick up all the 150lb bags of barley, wheat or oats on to flat bed trailers or trucks!

@@Dan.Whiteford I want to say they couldn’t do it. But, it still amazes me the things we did back then. We didn’t have a choice! We did the best we could with what we had. And truth be told, we were better for it, and made better money. Until the 80’s 🤣

One should also mention that almost everyone who is still farming that did back in the day is doing 5 or 10 times, or however much more than they did way back when. But nonetheless, there was much more manual labor involved in every aspect than there is today that’s for sure

I grew up on a farm outside of Adrian MN. In the mid 60's dad bought a new 4020 which was a big tractor back then. Now I am a contractor in Michigan and a few years ago I was doing a bathroom remodel outside of Ann Arbor and driving down a back road I came up behind a John Deere tractor going down the road. I happened to be on the phone with my brother who now has dad's 4020 and I told him about the tractor that I was approaching. I said it looks like a smaller model but when I passed it I realized it was a 4020! Things have changed so much in my lifetime!

You youngsters! 😉 I learned to drive combine in a John Deere 6600, gear drive, no AC. My earliest memories of riding in a combine are in a John Deere 45 square back, standing in the corner of the cab because there wasn't any real place to sit. Dad even had me steer the 45 once, while cutting beans, while he stepped off to walk behind the combine to see what kind of a job it was doing. I was probably 6-7 at that time.
Enjoy the folding corn head. Can't imagine you'll dislike being able to fold and go, instead of needing to put it on a trailer.
    Thanks for another good video!

We farmed with a 1962 jd 105 all the way until we quit in 2006 bean head with wood panels . 4 row corn head . No shredder had what we called Whirley birds to spread the straw. We added AC prior to that combined with the doors open when you fish the day all you could see was your eyes when you took your glasses off.

Lol... I really enjoyed Dougo's rendition about how they got the 4400 out of the mud. Dad told me that they used the EXACT same method back then. They had a 4400 and a 5500. I have to hear all about how " spoiled " we are now because of modern equipment. He and grandpa make it look like they worked 29 hours a day, 9 days a week back then. I have a question.... is it actually true that you guys had to battle Indians and wooley mammoths back then as you were working fields?

About his last year I took our 6620 with the same size head over to help him out and after the first load he parked the 4400 and let me finish it while he hauled in !! Cut 80 acres that day at 5 - 5.5 mph !! The good old days !! Miss the farm life and the family tradition

Chet, Big Swede and Dougo, my first combine to run was a Gleaner E. I was 11 years old running around a 100 acre field with the custom operator who showed me everything I needed to know. He jumped out to eat a sandwich and get a drink and when my uncle pulled up to empty the hopper he had " paper kittens " when he saw who was running the rig. I had her, but soon after that I was designated to running the bale wagon. Good times and yes the clutch was very stiff.

At least that one had a cylinder down at the hinge to pull the auger out, then you latched it. The big lever on the lower right was how you engage the entire separator and header. Keep the videos coming, love it.

I thing the Larsons need to go to a event where they have horses pulling the equipment. Plows, disks, swathers and etc. my first memory was putting up loose hay in the barn with a team pulling the hay fork up after it stabbed a mouth full of hay off the hay wagon. All the neighbors helped one another when it com to harvesting. A 4400 combine wasn’t even thought of. Big tractors was Allis Chalmers WD45. Heat and AC - yeah all you wanted plenty of heat in the summer and all the ac you could stand in the winter.

Congratulations on the corn head you got. Would think the folding corn head would be nice feature to have. The previous owner said not many hours on it. Know you will put it to good use.
Wow, some of that equipment went high. But new is hard to get right now , so nice used stuff is going good. The owner took good care of equipment the way it looked.
I think the auction company enjoyed having all of you there. Their mobile trailer was a place inside. Great way to conduct business. Things now days are something else.
Funny your reaction Chet to the old combine. Such a huge huge difference now days in equipment. What we had in the 50’s and 60’s was so different to what you have now. Running old equipment was really hard work. We never had a cab on anything, tractor or combine. Wow, a world of difference now days. The equipment you have now is luxury so to speak in comparison.
Glad you took us to the auction. It was interesting. Thanks.

It's amazing to see how much the equipment has changed and it's easier on the farmer as long as they have a big wallet. Merry Christmas guys!

Chet, you younger guys don't know what fun the old days were. My dad had a JD 95 when I was growing up. With a 4 row corn head you could go about 2 mph. We used to run all night my dad and I trading off so that one could go in the house to warm up for a while after dumping a gravity box. Later dad traded up to a 6600 which was luxury by comparison. Now I run a S670 for the farm I work for.

The 4400 sure took me back. You wanted to park those babies nose down when you had to swing the auger out, gravity helps! LOL When I started we had a 55 also, the 4400's looked huge compared to them. Ah, the memories! Good video guys!

I had a 3300 and then a 6600 I bought to just cut wheat with, due to the IH rotor's chewing straw up to much, and I like long stem straw for bedding and it dont make as much of a mess in a haymow as straw from a rotor combine. I would have bought a old IH combine, but I got good deals on both the 3300 and the 6600, and ended up selling one for more than I paid for it and the other for what I had in it, so they cost me nothing when I was doing custom wheat cutting for the straw back several years ago. It is amazing how much equipment has changed from when a kid. The combine and tractor seats are definitely much more comfortable than what I grew up with. I remember when we traded the Case 930 and 1370 off for a new Case 2290 and 2390, I though wow these seats are nice in the 90 series, and now days thee seats are heated and air conditioned, and some even give you a massage. Many of this younger generation of farmers have no idea how easy they got it. Back in the day their was no reverser if you plugged the combine, you had to manually reverse it and dig by hand, lol. Plus they were much easier to plug back in the day than they are now, because there as no such thing as roundup ready beans, lol. You cultivated and walked fields with weedhooks, lol.
