I've worked in PR for a brand. One of my colleagues had a special trick. She would send an influencer a DM saying something like "Just verifying your account after you made contact". The implication is that someone contacted the brand pretending to be the influencer to get a freebie. That opened the conversation and got the influencer on board. She claimed this worked 80% of the time. She was one of the best so I believe it. Is it morally dubious? Maybe. But it was really just a way to get the communication started and both got something out of it.
