I appreciate the review. I am waiting for them to hit the running store. 3-weeks out still. I am a Speedgoat Evo, Speedgoat II lover, not so happy with III and IV due to increased weight. Like to go light and fast.
Thanks for the review! Heel thing is stupid unless you want to put the shoe on without untying it or if you are a big fan of whales tail on the old Porsche 911 Turbos. Definitely going to mess with the fit of gaiters. SG4 overlays really seemed to help with longevity of the upper when running in rocky terrain. I really like the SG4. Not really looking forward to trying these. Lava rock will shred that stretchy upper. Prolly time to look for some sales on the SG4.
Reluctantly returned my new 4’s and replaced with the 5’s due to encountering a midsole hotspot and rough feel of a sewed area near the arch on one shoe only. Additionally, there was somewhat more midsole cushion on the 4’s which could have caused the hotspot until the shoe wore in. No such fit issues with the 5’s but color ways were semi-hideous...went with Fiesta as it is as good as any other color offered (black too hot in Texas) and it was all they had on REI sales floor (true to size for my 12D slightly wide forward foot and slightly narrow heel. Curled heel pull looks elfish but you can’t see it while running, but does make shoe easier to put on. Thumbs up, so is the 4 which is worth the sale price of 115 US$.
I've twisted my ankle a few times with the Challengers, I think landing on a rock with the exposed foam. I've not twisted my ankle in other shoes. I was hoping I could switch to Speedgoat, but alas...
Thanks for the very complete review! I’ve got normal width size 11 Arahi 5’s. I’ve seen some reviews saying the SG5 runs narrow. Yet the sizing specs for the width are the same for each. My Arahi’s are just right width wise, but I wouldn’t want them any narrower. Any thoughts on if I should start with regular or wide? I’d like to order direct from Hoka since it’s going to be a while for my local stores to get any for me to try on. Thanks.
That heel flair is really questionable design aesthetics for me... in a road shoe its ok, but in a trail shoe that would let debris in... something that would really ruin your day.... if you like using gaiters, what now? A pull tab is still better...
So it sounds like this version is not as adapt to technical terrain, right ? It looks like the upper comfort comes with a price, as lacing too hard will not solve the problem, especially as the material will stretch even further when hot, feet wet, etc. Correct ? This would mean the SG5 is more of a cruiser for slightly technical...
Hmmm I don’t know that I noticed that. I’m in the Pacific Northwest and it’s wet here. I didn’t shy away from wet or technical and I felt like once I got them where I needed them they stayed locked down. Can’t speak to heat at this point.
No but they drain remarkably well. Second time I went into water. Wasn't happy but carried on running. Feet were weirdly dry when I finished 7 miles later. Three days ago 🤘
They're not as good as the Speedgoat 4. They don't give me that super grippy planted feeling. There's too much give in the upper. The 4's were better. Change for its own sake isn't always improvement
“Speedgoat ONE ONE”??? You didn’t even bother saying “HOKA” you just said “ONE ONE”…😒 It’s the Hoka Speedgoat. That’s it. Hoka dropped the silly “ONE ONE” wording from their name. It’s just HOKA and then the name of the shoe.
So disappointed with this shoe. It gives zero grip on surfaces that are even slightly wet or sandy. If you running on technical trails like me, please avoid the speedgoat 5.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one struggling with rubbing from that upper plastic/rubber toe-cap (addressed at @7:25). I'm glad they removed it.

Thanks for the review. Just ordered my SG5 directly from Hoka ...
It's just Hoka now in 2022 😎
Yea… found that out after I recorded. I’ll get it right on the next ones 😀

I wonder if my foot will slip out on very steep inclines, or if it will suck my sock down, I hate that.

Thanks for the review- do you think the upper will let sand seep in? Doing a Utah trip through the dunes….

Stack height is ridiculous, hoka king of twisted ankles
Looked at this, liked the specs, went with the Scarpa Spin Infinity instead.🏃♂️😎🤘

Great review. How is the sizing? Same like other Speedgoats which was always 1/2 size larger for me than other Hoka shoes? Thanks
For me yes. I wear a 9 in previous versions and a 9 in these.

Pull Tabs definitely. Current heel looks cringe. Only when you're wearing them you can't see them

@@TravisLiles Thx, sounds good then
I appreciate the review however you near to learn the correct terms for the shoe ( vamp - not stretchy elastic material).
Do these shoes shoes have any kind of water repellency?

One one is gone as of about 6 months ago,,,, it’s just Hoka now lol….🎅🏻🏴☠️🏔
