The only option was to block with Ne4, which Hikaru plays c4 exploiting blacks only defender of the knight. G4 was the only reply to not just lose a pawn. Every move was practically forced. Black lost the bishop pair and had to liquidate material on the board to equalize. It was a scramble. Ideally you would think about sacking the e-pawn for activity, but there was no compensation in the position.
