Nothing against Norm but he just doesn't need to be in these videos because Adam explains himself quite well in what he is doing and his process as he builds. I'd agree with Norm if Adam wasn't talking or explaining but Adam has been around a camera so long that he probably knows what to do without the back and forth needed.
as a Canadian I would like to say...Adam you are so awesome to do what you love. what I wish I had you have,a unlimited amount of tools at your disposal. With out the tools I feel my creativity is going to waste. I do try but man I can only imagine. thanks keep it up.
+Top 0 things you NEED to know, and watch what my pet rock has to say on this subject! are you stupid? props only make a portion of the movie. Even with screen accurate props I doubt you can recreate the about of work that has been put into any good film. the CGI, the actors, location etc.
***** You incompetent fool. Disney owns the, "Star Wars," property. You need to get you current events from something other than Minecraft lets play videos.
I love that these videos are so well-produced, but without music or an annoying narrator like something on TV. It's just you and a maker, having a good time!
At 7:05 - Silver Sharpies. Great stuff for marking dark items (power bricks comes to mind and to highlight black on black molded labeling on electronics). Interesting story > Originally the Silver caps had the standard pocket clip on it. Unfortunately, this made everyone stored them tip up - not to mention also in the standard tip-up point of sale pack - only to have the pen dry out. To Sanford's credit they realized their mistake and, instead of abandoning a good product they; 1) removed the pocket clip, 2) repackaged it for tip-down display and 3) labeled the pins "Store Tip Down"!
I love Adam's approach of: "let's try out" instead of trying to figure it out. My colleague she has a PhD. in computer science and she really has to first figuring things out in her head and often this slows here down compared to my other colleague and I when we are like: "hmmm we don't know let's try it out... Right that doesn't work but we can perhaps change this... let's try that... voila!" So often we are done a lot quicker than she is. It is funny to see that after almost 3 years our work method rubbed off on her as well. She is also more relaxed now and more often says: "Don't know you yet but we'll try a few things and see where it gets us". I guess she could only adopt our style of engineering because we could never get on her level of mathematics and abstract logic :D
That's called SCIENCE! Experimentation, empiricism, observation of testing hypotheses. Engineering is merely application of knowledge, Science is the discovery of new knowledge.
Earthenfist Yes I know but there's a massive difference in applied science (engineering), natural sciences (a lot of empirical based knowledge) and the theoretical sciences that she did (Mathematics mainly). As an engineer we know that maths can only get you so far, ESPECIALLY in RF technology which is very much voodoo ;)
I'm not in your field and don't know your situations, but I think that sometimes people who are not planners disregard the planning stage in general because they are not comparing the overall time and perhaps other factors like cost and efficiency and labour hours. For example, maybe something gets built faster without the planning, but then it has to go through more cycles of testing, re-adjustment, testing, and so on compared to the planner who has already considerred some of that and saves time there or has accomplished it in a more economical or efficient way. Anyhow, just thought that I would throw that out there. I personally enjoy the trial and error process too, but balanced with some planning ahead. Like Adam mentioned, it's rare to get something right the first time, so there can be a lot more back and forth potentially. Also, in this case, he did measure parts of his neck with the tape measure and had the experience with costume making where it wasn't stabbing in the dark at all, and he used the muslin as the cheaper pattern making material. If you didn't have that option, and you had to spend a lot of money on even the first try (or the material was in short supply, or you don't have time before the big day to try again if you screwed up and used up your materials), you'd probably need to think things through more first.
SquishableGirl YEs it is true that if you could foresee everything in planning stages it would be so much easier. And NASA for example is one of those organizations that really do a lot of this and have to because you cannot simulate everything perfectly here on earth. But with engineering the devil is always in the details. And to oversee all details is simply impossible. So usually you start with the global idea and you refine the actual design by doing it. I think this is the best balance. I do not dive into a software project if I do not know all the large individual blocks. But I stopped working out the details on paper 20 years ago because you never have all the details -- and when you do it's a simple project :D
Prototyping has been demonstrated to decrease the total cost of development, and pure "waterfall" development schedule, which emphasizes planning ahead from clean sheet, has been a consistent failure with regard to developing complex software with many interacting parts, and it keeps fairing worse as software gets more complex. It's pays to stay flexible. On the other hand, i find some approaches outright haphazard. When people change something, and things go from working to broken and vice versa, it's not sufficient just to know the outcome and stick with it, analysis of what caused it behind the scenes is needed, else there can be outright catastrophic, project-endangering results down the road. In this regard, it's important not to overemphasize moment to moment efficiency. Analysis ahead of time can reduce risks, but analysis after discovery is the next best thing.
I find myself constantly amazed at how much Adam freehands things without reference or using a straightedge. From his rough sketches to how quickly he cuts with an xacto blade, that shit is born from YEARS of experience, my friends. Respect for the master.
I bet money that Adams bust is one of those hyper realistic masks they had made for that one mythbusters episode. If anyone remembers that one. Twas a good one.
It seems to me that if you just make the upper part of the gorget 2-3 times larger then you could just scrunch it down for a similar look. You could even sew in the pleats. This would give the gorget more "body" instead of just flimsy leather.
yeah, and usually when working with leather for something like this, you'd back it in a stiffer fabric to give it more weight and also to prevent warping, then line it.
Adam, thanks. Just really good to see 'soft parts' builds as these are potentially more tricksty than the 'hard' which most of us are used to. Just finishing Rey costume for my 8 yo for Celebrations in a weeks' time, and acknowledgement of dealing with foldable, 'creep-able' materials is great. At least i am building on my daughter, rather than modelling on myself, so that makes it slightly easier. Thanks again for the inspiration.
since it's French, shouldn't gorget be pronounced "gore-jay"? Using a j isn't exactly the sound I'm looking for but I can't think of any phonemes in English that match it.
I think that Adam should go Incognito to Comic con as himself, I mean he has a bust of himself already. I just think that it would be kinda interesting
Wow, amazing work Adam! please continue to share with us your progress on this costume in such great detail. These references will be so incredibly valuable to those of us who are working on our own Kylo Ren costumes!
Really like that you're doing the Kylo Ren costume Adam, anxious to see more 😉 But, I'll be honest this seems really light for a one day build... Recently there seems to be less exciting one day builds since your Kirk Captain's Chair. Hoping to see more in the future, really excited to see what you've got coming next. I've even started making my own ventures into costume making and prop building using EVA foam and assorted other materials. I'm considering starting to add videos to my own TH-cam channel for no other reason except to keep myself on track 😉😋 Mythbusters forever!!! Thanks for all that you do 😉 -Josh Sieberkrob
When they teased Kylo Ren's look before The Force Awakens came out, I thought he was going to be the ultimate badass villain just because I thought the look of him was really cool. Shame Disney made the character out to be a whiny little cupcake with identity issues.
I guess in Kylo's defense, he was easily the most interesting character of The Last Jedi, but I was getting so pissed off towards the end of that movie that I was actually rooting for the 'bad' guys so that unfortunately isn't saying much. Kylo stopping a blaster bolt in mid air is still one of the most impressive things I've seen any Jedi/Sith do in the entire franchise so I'll give him that.
this was great and speaking as a saddle maker i know how difficult cutting and sewing leather can be . i've been doing it for 20 years now and i still catches me out from time to time
I love how concerned Adam looked when he got something right on the first try 😂😂😂 must not happen very often. Makes me feel a little better about my project mistakes
I'm just about to start my TK Stormtrooper armor and watching Adam work on a neckseal like I know i will have to do in short order is kind of awesome and encouraging. Thanks, Tested. Great video.
Holy crap...not to sound creepy but the noise that the exacto blade was making through the leather was extremely pleasing! Great build Adam! Keep them coming!!
I love the fabric type stuff here because it allows me to learn more then the other stuff as I would have had no clue how to do most of the stuff here. I'd have had to make 3 attempts before I was happy with the result
Here's Adam Savage's Incognito cosplay walk as Kylo Ren: th-cam.com/video/VBVFZIa9XzU/w-d-xo.html
Adam; Can you do a sewing tutorial? Specifically the seam end finish. Many thanks -D

I love this series, one day builds are pretty much the only thing on this channel that hold my interest.
I am the same, if there isn't Adam building something (without Norm) in the title then I will not watch.
Adam's one day builds is the best part of this channel. I need more of these.
Nobody talking except Adam, great video.
we want Norm!
I agree
Nothing against Norm but he just doesn't need to be in these videos because Adam explains himself quite well in what he is doing and his process as he builds. Who here agrees Adam Savage is a BADASS?
I don't think so...
He's a SAVAGE!
Savage by name, savage by nature!

1:53 Adam fixing his bust's hair. Funniest thing I've seen all week. Thanks for that!
Adam gets so excited when he shows you something. It's kinda cute xD
No homo.....?
***** Just because I think hes cute, doesn't mean I want to bang him. But for all intents and purposes, No homo xD
He may be getting older, but he'll always have the imagination and heart of a child.
Gunz_11 LOL did you even read the other comments?
No straight dude will say that
I love how they don't put music over everything...it's nice to hear the sounds of the shop along with Adam thinking things out.
Can life get any better?!
That moment when you log into TH-cam and see the words " One Day Builds...Kylo Ren..."
Thank you yes ill have some.
You forgot the most important ones: "Adam Savage"
I've been waiting too long for another one day build. Too damn long.
I agree. I love the one day builds. So do more, please.
+Carbon Cosplay But the wait was worth it tho.
Imagine having some Blue Cheese to smoke, it's the perfect relaxing strain and it makes these videos more insightful and enlightening
I love that these videos are so well-produced, but without music or an annoying narrator like something on TV. It's just you and a maker, having a good time!
Kit leather. Yeah, it figures Kylo Ren's gorget would be made from kittens.
Bruh
Watching Adam happily build relaxes me as much as it does him.

Love the video! Super glad it doesn't have any annoying music playing as Adam works. I much prefer to hear him talking and his little comments.
oh jesus i almost died when he removed those sunglasses
Beauty*
I read this comment first and still wasn't prepared for *that*
Same here. I thought "Sunglasses? He's not wearing any OH JESUS!!!"
I died
why is that bruh?
YES! One Day Builds are my favorite episodes. Great way to get an introduction into a new skill set. THANK YOU!
These Adam builds are the best. They chill me out like no other!
Since Mythbusters is over; this is the only thing that I have left that has Adam Savage involved..
😟
At 17:18 when he puts the balaclava on, he looks strikingly like Jamie
Weren't you on podcast with cobra tv
Nuka Gaming Huh?
Gotta say one of the best things in life is watching Adam sew. Don't know why; just is.
I've been watching too much Tested lately. Now I won't be able to watch a movie without pausing and looking closely to all the props
I'll just say it: much more enjoyable to watch Adam work alone rather than with one of the Tested hosts there talking through everything he's doing
WE NEED MORE ONE DAY BUILDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely love watching Adam's creative process.
I can watch Adam do anything! I'll watch him picking up dog poop and I will love it!
The sound of a knife cutting through leather is fantastic. I love it.
I love Adam's approach of: "let's try out" instead of trying to figure it out.

Adam wearing a t-shirt and white gorget looks like a cool nun with a dress down T-shirt version of the penguin suit. 4:20
So much better when Adam is on his own like this :) Get to watch a craftsman at work without the stupid questions or sucking up from Norm!
I bet money that Adams bust is one of those hyper realistic masks they had made for that one mythbusters episode. If anyone remembers that one.
Twas a good one.
God, I love this channel. The inspiration it provides for being creative is just endless.
Adam shoud have his own channel
Am I the only one that absolutely loves the sound of the exact-o knife cutting the leather?
i could watch this guy make mud and it'd still be entertaining
nic thompson I agree
I have!! The mythbusters quicksand episode! He literally made mud, tho the myth seemed inconclusive.😁
I watched someone make clay out of riverbed mud. It was really entertaining.
its amazing watching a genius at work. this is truely a masterclass with adam
You guys need a boom mic when Adam does costume stuff... haha
I don't know why but watching Adam's one day builds is so relaxing :D
Try a rotocutter (basically a really sharp pizza cutter), they don't drag the fabric as much as an x-acto!
Sebastian Storholm that’s what I use, they’re awesome. And pattern/fabric weights.
I've used those while helping my mother cut fabric. They're great on straight lines, but curves are really hard to control it.
I love Adam and his passion for things like this, he is such a clever man
It seems to me that if you just make the upper part of the gorget 2-3 times larger then you could just scrunch it down for a similar look. You could even sew in the pleats. This would give the gorget more "body" instead of just flimsy leather.
I was thinking the same thing. Adam's here lies so flat because they're sewn in strips.
yeah, and usually when working with leather for something like this, you'd back it in a stiffer fabric to give it more weight and also to prevent warping, then line it.
The sound of the x-acto blade cutting the leather really soothes my soul
Han Solo: Take off that mask. You don't need it.
Kylo Ren: What do you think you'll see if I do?
Han Solo: The face of Adam Savage.
Adam, thanks. Just really good to see 'soft parts' builds as these are potentially more tricksty than the 'hard' which most of us are used to. How do you pattern things with muslims ?
How many muslims does it take to make a Kylo Ren costume?
Congratulations on being a bigot and xenophobe.
Liofa I do too like xylophones! i have nothing against them.
+Liofa lol, how is that either racist or bigoted? dude, read a dictionary.
The end result is perfection!! Grade: Superior Greatness!
since it's French, shouldn't gorget be pronounced "gore-jay"? Using a j isn't exactly the sound I'm looking for but I can't think of any phonemes in English that match it.
I'd spell it "gore-ZHAY" to get the idea across.
I feel like it's a zh sound. Like sh, but not.
if you've seen Les Mis, it's like how Jean Valjean is pronounced
Let's just call it a dickey...
thank god someone else noticed
Glad the one day builds are back. I missed them.
Once the whole costume is finished he HAS to go incognito with it to a con
won't be very incognito with the whole internet having seen him make it though...
yep, will be spotted at the elevator lol
still wanna see it tho
Pretty much what happened when he went incognito with the Mercury suit.
That'll last about 5 seconds.
+deadbeatloser22 And the Hellboy costume. Took about 10 seconds.
I love how excited Adam gets while draping.
A video without Norm' commenting and touching everything. Thank god.
XVI0001 right?
I really like that they didn't put any typical dramatic music and noises in, but they just kept it low key
That bust of Adam looks like a bust of Odo from Deep Space 9.
THANK YOU!!!! Someone else noticed.
I just said that too!
odo couldn't rock my shades
He could BECOME your shades
Incorrect. It looks like Bill Murray. ^_^

5:49 "This is a *ruff* assembly"
I love one day builds from Adam. Thank you.
15:45 Aaaannd there's a bandage on the finger
THIS IS FANTASTIC! No music. No bullshit. Just great.
(New subscriber, will watch more)
Adam looks like someone completely different without glasses. 18:22.
The sound of the Exacto slicing the leather is so calming.
4:19 Savage nun
So fascinating! He was free-handing some of that leather cutting, great look Adam!
Lol i thought he was gonna cut his finger off at 11:11
oh shit, you didn't just 11:11 me did you?
Looks like he actually does injure his right ring finger! Between edits 11:30 - 11:36.
is always a pleasure see you working, you make this stuff look easy.
i am seeing this at school!
I love how there’s no music in these videos while he builds. It’s so relaxing watching and listening
What lightsaber are you going to use? Come on lets see you machine a lightsaber!
If there is someone who could really make a functioning lightsaber, it's probably going to be Adam! 😁
Adam is really the biggest man-child to ever roam this earth, and god we're lucky to have him!
I couldn't help but think about toilet seat covers when he put that first piece on his shoulders
I agree Adam is a Savage! 😄 I hope to met you one day sir, you inspire me with your builds and costume making.
i wonder how adam would do in project runway. hahhahah i would love to see him make something better than any of the "Fashion dessigners" hahhahh
End result looks great!!!!! I look forward to more
Isn't that bust from a mythbusters episode? I'm pretty sure Jamie wore it as a mask.
I love the smell of leather shops. This summer I visited a Tandy and it was amazing. I wish I could replace the air in my home with it.
Adam Savage make a Adam Savage Costume
I love this. I've been making historical costumes for getting on to 30 years but I'm still using the same kind of process you describe. Cheers.

Your bust looks like Robert Englund!
odo from deep space 9
I think so too. It's weird. I don't see the "Odo" from DS9 as clearly as I see Robert Englund. lol
At first glance I thought it looked like Charles Dance in Last Action Hero
Definitely looks like sloth from the goonies.
Definitely Robert Englund
I want to watch Adam build all damn day
I thought the leather was to thin when you started.... I was right.
I love the sound of the cutting leather its so smooth
Clicked on it just to find out what a gorget is
I enjoy so much of just watching you do you're thing. thanks Adam
I see snapple in the background... delicious
I love how concerned Adam looked when he got something right on the first try 😂😂😂 must not happen very often. Makes me feel a little better about my project mistakes
what's wrong with being Canadian eh??
I just spent 20 minuets of my life watching Adam savage make a fancy let her scarf.....20 minuets well spent : )
Shit, that bust will haunt my dreams. End it with fire!
hes such a freaking genius! i love watching him work!!!
Nice job! Looks great!!!!! You're awesome Adam!!!
i love how therapeutic adams videos are
I'm just about to start my TK Stormtrooper armor and watching Adam work on a neckseal like I know i will have to do in short order is kind of awesome and encouraging. Thanks, Tested. Great video.
Holy crap...not to sound creepy but the noise that the exacto blade was making through the leather was extremely pleasing! Great build Adam! Keep them coming!!
YOU!!!!! Mr Savage . Are a Bloody Legend
The quiet working moments are so good
I love the fabric type stuff here because it allows me to learn more then the other stuff as I would have had no clue how to do most of the stuff here. I'd have had to make 3 attempts before I was happy with the result
I could watch him all day long. So interesting.
