I pulled my hair and whined and lost sleep,but he knew I could do it and after a C in Algebra 1, I received an A in Algebra 2. I am forever indebted to that person.
Saw a guy diagnose a fuel pump with a scope once. One bad spot in the pump and you could see it in the scope pattern. Saved a lot of time, less invasive, and found an issue that could have been missed testing pressure. It was really impressive.

Great start. What I would find really helpful is some more intermediate to advanced stuff. What parameters do you need for a good scope? What is Bandwidth and the role of Bandwidth? How is sampling rate related to timebase, and what specs do you look for to make sure you have a high enough sampling rate at the relatively long time bases used for Automotive work .. ie a lot of scopes deliver high sampling at very short timebases, micro and nano seconds. But in Automotive you need good sampling rates around 1 to 10 MS/s in the millisecond range, especially for ignition work. Be great to work through all these variables in action.
Im a complete novice to scopes. I currently don't own one but before I go spending hard earned cash I want to know more. Thanks for a simple and great intro

Recently purchased a Verus and want to learn the scope features so I don't get left behind in the industry, I feel scopes are becoming more and more needed. So I'm very greatful to be able to learn about their functions thx.
As cars become more electrical over time (hybrids, electrical, or even fuel cell), Being able to use a lab scope will be an essential skill. Thanks for the important series frm, will be waiting for more content on this topic.
Great Video. I want a better scope. I have been able to make my little crappy USB scope do a lot. Mine has no storage, is only two channels, and only does +10V to -10V. A 10x and 20x attenuator helps to overcome the voltage limitation but you have to just do the math to know 1.2 volts equals 12 or 24 volts. I use screen recording software to be able to play it back, but of course I can't change my time base or voltage and "zoom in" on a play back. I don't have a amp probe but I have found you can do a pretty good relative compression with just a voltage measurement. The voltage will sag on the good compression cylinders but will stay higher on the low cylinder. I've ordered a low amp probe so I can see the divets in the fuel injector waveform to see if an injector is actually opening and closing, which you just cannot see with voltage alone. Two channels isn't really enough anymore for cam crank correlations, because so much stuff has more than on cam sensor. Every car I work on though I try to get a known good correlation screen shot of crank and cams sensor 1 and then crank and cam sensor 2. I haven't' got to work on any can bus problems yet, but I can't wait to have one to do. I used my scope a while back to diagnose a HVAC blower problem in a Porsche. The customer was sure it needed a blower motor, and the symptoms made me guess it was a motor too. I was able to prove with the scope it was a fan speed regulator issue in 10 minutes. I was still really hoping I was making the right call when ordering the part, and I was right. Saved the customer a lot of money. I found that is is super handy for seeing duty cycle signals on things like a IAC to verify the computer is sending the signal to adjust the idle under different loads. I have all my parts ordered to make my own pressure transducer (which is pretty cheap to make), but I haven't got them together yet. I want to do a video on that. My point to all this is if you can't afford a Pico, get something. I am probably still just going to a Hantek next. An 8 channel Hantek can be had for $120 on Amazon. You can work around a lot of stuff and save a lot of time on diagnosis even with a crappy scope. The whole time you are learning how to use a scope and when you do get a Pico you will know what all those extra features are that you've been wanting and when you need them. I have learned all this as a DIYer in my drive way. It just takes playing with it and figuring it out and soon it becomes second nature.
Great information .I believe that if you have a scope use it on all the cars you service to get familiar with your tool . MOST IMPORTANT make sure you get some top notch test lead and probes .
Just came across this presentation and really enjoyed it. I'll ask a question that other beginners are wondering about but probably too bashful to ask: Why can't a bench scope like Atten, Rigol et al be used effectively in automotive? What are we not understanding?

Hey Mike, can u tell me all the situations on a car where the voltage can spike higher than 40 volts? I bought a 20:1 attenuator for my Launch Torque 5 scope. I only remember secondary ignition spiking to 66k via a coil and a starter drawing 150 -250v.
For camshaft sensors (3 prong) I use innova 3320 volt meter ($20) and watch the voltage from the sig side. If it is constantly changing between 1v and 5v, it's good. If it moves a within 1v range, it's no good. I know they say you cant do this but I do and it works
Channel is simply the number of hook ups you can make and look at data, 2 channels means you can scope 2 different sensors at once with a 4 channel you can scope 4 different sensors
@@flatratemaster Sounds like a job for Pico but Pico doesn't seem to react as quick on a laptop as apposed to one built in to a scanner like a Modis Edge, maybe there is some kind of delay working through the Windows operating system

Great Video. I want a better scope. I have been able to make my little crappy USB scope do a lot. Mine has no storage, is only two channels, and only does +10V to -10V. All comes down to sample rate, how fast the scope looks for a signal most of those "scopes" will work for some automotive signals but not all

Most times 2 or 3 channels but for those times you need 4, you need 4 of more channels
