My son played the Virtue and Valor deck. It's pretty awesome. It ramps everything up and having ways to grab auras and enchantments out of the graveyard can be brutal. He was having a great time turning anything cool into a 3/3 elk with no abilities. Best joke of the night... "I just want to see you happy. I then want to take that happiness and turn it into a 3/3 elk" lol
I just want to say Henzie is a precon I bought on a whim and it's my all-time favorite deck. I think part of it is that it actually accounts for all the parts of commander that can be less fun: Because creatures are blitzed, you a pretty much guaranteed to always do something cool/fun on your turn. His second ability isn't one I ever use intentionally but does make you feel better when he gets removed, which ameliorates the bad feeling of having your commander removed, as in some ways your deck works stronger. Plus if he's removed early, you get a noticeable cost reduction for the rest of the game. If he's removed later, you can usually recost him and still do something else on your turn. Because your creatures die at the end of the turn, your board is usually never huge, which I think helps other players feel as if your deck is "fair"/interactable, which I think helps how the table feels. However, when your board gets huge, it's usually because you just did something very cool and likely did a bunch of damage/resolved triggers, so when you do get targeted you don't feel bad. Finally, the deck just does a bit of everything I'd want to do. Stompy bois? cool ETBs? cool combat triggers? cool die triggers? Reanimation? All great. All the while, the blitz draw keeps you getting more options. I know there's an infinite combo or two, but my group doesn't play with those. And the combat-centric playstyle makes the games go faster too. You can build a Henzie deck at pretty much any level or budget, and have a good time no matter what. I highly recommend the Henzie Discord for deck discussion and card recommendations, but honestly, you can just play whatever creatures you like to resolve.
I mean, not to rain on your parade, but imo, henzie is one of the absolute worst designed popular casual commanders we've ever seen, worse even than the eminence guys. You legitimately may as well goldfish the deck every time you want to play it, because the table is so disincentivized from interacting with you that it is just miserable to play against. Remove henzie? Cool, you poweted him up, and he's cheap af, and in green, so he is NEVER off the board for more than 1 turn cycle. Want to remove the ridiculous creatures he's putting into play for a discount? Oh, well, that was a trap, because they are guaranteed to have a death trigger from blitz and might have another one stapled on for the fun of it, meaning at the very best you are trading a card for some of henzies mana. The only two options you have against henzie decks are consistent removal effects, particularly rest in peace, goodbye death triggers, or you interact with the deck on the stack, meaning you have to play blue with a ton of counter spells, and pray the rest of the table doesn't murder you over your loss of tempo as you endlessly answer henzie. What generally happens once a table has seen a henzie deck perform, is the game starts, and the other 3 players race the henzie deck to see if they can kill the them before they kill the table. He's just not fun to play against.
KADENA MENTIONED WOOOOOH! This was my second Commander deck and I love it, it's still my best casual deck. The only thing it's not mentioned here is Morph can turn into a really complicated mechanic, I suggest any player to read and watch videos about Morph or you'll be slowing the game down on the table from time to time.
I bought the Rebellion Rising deck and really enjoyed my time upgrading it. Although after a while I noticed that the deck underperformed for me with Neyali at the helm and switched to the alternative commander Otharri. Otharri is a powerhouse that needs to be dealt with. But in the end I actually ended up taking apart the deck again and making an Isshin (Two Heavens As One) deck which is really, really fun to play for me.
I ended up adding green and changing the commander to jetmir and gave it some token doublers, champion of lambholt in an opening hand and then drawing into a token doubler early on is ridiculous
Kadena was so underrated. I ended up getting a lot of the 2019 commanders and she performs really consistently. Not super strong but not a push over. Very fun deck
Wanted to mention Spirit Squadron. Its not a very typical but very well done tribal, that cares about dying, tapping and graveyards. The list is pretty tight and revolves around spirits, so there arent that many expensive staples, but it plays really nice
All of the decks you showcased here are all ones that I’ve tested, and depending on the table, can hold their own VERY well. I happily replay all of them. 😊
Just got the rebellion rising deck yesterday for $28, it's a great option for clever concealment and flawless manuever, while some of the remaining cards could be used to brew or add to other decks. The worth of the full precon is around $63 and i found out i had direct use to aroud $39 of it so it was a no brainer.
One thing re Rebellion rising - it’s a potential Rebel commander!!! The alternative commander there is a phoenix who creates rebel token and for tapping a rebel can be reanimated. Very sweet to revive old lin sivvi and other old rebels:)
Rebellion Rising was my first deck! Funny thing that it's overlooked, since I won my first few matches because I wasn't considered a threat until it was too late. Fun deck!
As someone who's first precon was Lorehold Legacies, your assessment of it growing with you is so spot on. 3 years later and I am still upgrading it and enjoying it. Such a versatile well rounded deck that can be played in so many different ways: value engine, big artifact creatures, voltron, stax, combo etc.
I can confirm the morph deck is really good BUT it can be tough to follow and keep track of a dozen face down cards, especially after upgrading it. I never tried it but it could be better if you used the tokens when you played something and then keep a second hand of all your face downs for reference and the ability to track what's what. I can say one of the BEST upgrades for it is a burgeoning, in one round of turns i played out 6 lands from hand since you draw a tonne.
I'm getting that Eldraine one for my GF, found a pack with it and the fairie deck and I'm picking the enchantments one for her and the other one for me since I want a dimir commander. It'll be her first deck so I hope she has can have a great time with it
I had the Kadena Faceless Menace deck gifted to me, and I was really happy!! At first. The deck has not many upgrades you could get into, and it felt powerful in the 4-precon meta BUT it left much to desire on the constructed commander format. I couldn't upgrade it as much as I wanted and ended up butchering it (as much as I could, because it's so focused on morph that it was really hard to put its cards into other decks)
Back in 2013 i got the evasive maneuvers with derevi, it’s a bant GWB deck and it’s my top so far, you can add karametra, profet of krupix, infinit tolkens with the sailor and green aura, infinit mana with rings and basalt, you litteraly untap all at any time for the counters, it’s a blast. Now i’m waiting for my ixalan merfolks to do some exploring
I was missing the Exit from Exile precon! It's Gruul with Faldorn at the helm. She gives you wolves for playing cards from exile, while she herself is able to exile a card. It's pretty great out of the box and with the recent exile payoff cards being added to the game, it's getting better and better. Sure, Prosper is probably the more powerful exile matters commanders, but Faldorn seems more fun to play for me.
+1 for virtue and valor, I've only been playing for about 6 months but getting this deck early on really helped get me interested in commander. You get to play fairly recklessly with enough options to bring back your best auras and creatures from the grave. Fracturing Gust was fun to swap in, but don't expect it to always end well lmao.
It's a very good deck for people just getting into commander or people who like a straight forward deck that isn't overly complicated. My wife has both Eldraine precons, the Eldrazi precon and 2 self built decks. Her favorite is Virtue and Valor.
surprises me how many people got Kadena as their first commander pre-con. I bought it from a friend of mine who didn't play it anymore and i wanted to try it. it has a hard time closing off games but I think its best to see it as a control deck
I mean that precon cycle was really solid, mystic intellect maybe being the less interesting of all. Me and my friend got one each and I still playing the upgraded naya.
Can confirm, Virtue and Valor is absolutely nasty out of the box. Played a 3-pod with a guy who shuffled it up straight outta the cellophane, no sleeves or anything, and he steamrolled both of us who were playing expensive decks. The alternate commander in it is also quite good, and it can upgrade into a ridiculously OP deck.
@@ramenkingcruz things like Overwhelming Stampede or Overrun or Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse is usually more than enough to get rid of most problems. the evergreen is obviously Craterhoof Behemoth but I was able to win quite often with Biomass Mutation itself.
Rebellion Rising is great for the novice deck builder. Theres 2 clear direction you can take the deck when upgrading so it's a great start for a newbie
I have both of the Wilds Of Eldraine Commander Decks, last time that I played a Precon Commander event, I played the Faerie deck so tomorrow night, I will play the other deck.
The group my wife and I play with like to use our own EDH decks but every once in a while we have a precon night where we use the decks as they are sold no upgrades, surprisingly enough it's a lot of fun though most decks are poor to average some do hold up quite well Rebellion Rising and Virtue and Valor like you said being two great decks out of the box. Another good one out of the box is Urza's Iron Alliance, always have a ball with it, even if it wasn't I'd still enjoy it the old style borders are a nice nostalgia trip. I have this thing when I get Dungeons of Death with Sefris, I so want it to work, and it never does. :D
The Boros Tokens have ×2 strike deck is awesome. I enjoy it right out the box with less than $5 replacements to add indestructible for all your creatures. Frontline Medic is a key....
Restless revanent was my second precon I picked up and let me tell you Milicent is RIDICULOUS. So hard to control my board state while my creatures not only make spirit tokens but when the non tokens die, I get more spirits which reduces Milicent recast cost. So strong.
The Dihala Planeswalker deck is really cool. Fun out the box. Super easy to upgrade and versatile since you can swap legendaries depending on what you want to do.
The Captain N'ghathrod one can become pretty strong with minor upgrades. Get some good mill cards to replace the do-nothing horrors and you got a pretty strong and adaptable deck.
Honestly i think Party Time out of CLB is a pretty good Precon, even though the party mechanic is a little underused there are some powerfull cards in it
The blood token precon Strefan. Is pretty messed up too. I wasnt a fan of the set at all but the precon came with ways to give your vamps 1st strike and deathtouch though. I never modified it and it holds up against slivers and eldrazi better than some of my hardcore decks
My biggest issue with V&V deck was... that i already own most of the expensive cards, so it was a lot cheaper to buy missing pieces than to buy the deck. lol As far as Kadena goes tho... Morphs are terrible, there are a very few upgrades to be made for the deck, and in the future, there's little chance new morph cards will be made, which ruins its fun I guess. Similar thing happened with Mutate deck, which is another Sultai bust. Morph's are a drag to play tho, remembering which facedown card is which is really annoying. lol Heck I play werewolves and I find tracking Day/Night less taxing. lol
picked up a friend of mine the neylai precon and not gonna lie he has buffed a few cards out of it and has been kind of stomping our play group last few games!
I got a couple commander master precons over the years and Ellivere is still the biggest “what the fuck this commander goes crazy so fast so consistently!” Even though it’s a base precon. I get similar vibes from each ixalan precon. Hakbal explore also goes off so fast
I picked Anhelo and boy... This quickly became my favorite. Lay low, build stupid combos, and literally explode the table. Killed 3 players by milling 100+ cards in the same turn.
I'm having fun with Quantum Quandrix. But ngl I upgraded the hell out of it, so I'll get another precon and do minor upgrades. It had insane card draw, but it works as a token creation deck.
As a super new player (I literally don't even have my own deck, just have been borrowing others), would y'all suggest the Virtue and Valor precon? I'm pretty unsure. but it is relatively cheap, and so it isn't the end of the world if it isn't my favorite.
If one more commander youtube channel slanders planeswalker party, I'm gonna lose my mind. That Precon is killer out of box and functions well even when I pulled the best pieces for other decks.
Glad you enjoy it! But it definitely sounds like you are in the minority, so the newer players who are watching this are probably better served by not being encouraged to pick up a deck that a lot of people won’t enjoy. Same actually goes for the morph deck…

I am new to magic and realised that the commander decks are pretty expensive. So I was wondering does this format rotate so that in a few years I cant play a 3 year old deck anymore or can I buy one deck and play it like for ever?
+1 for team Henzi … it’s just so good. You can fully build it your own with draft chaff and it can still be pretty good. Another fun precon I would suggest is Kalamax.
Faceless menace was my first commander precon and it suuuucks, it has fun mechanics but the attention you have to spend on your own board state versus how little pay-off you get from flipping your cards feels really clunky and is not at all powerful.
i'd love the commander masters precons if they weren't DOUBLE THE PRICE FOR NO REASON. I picked up the cats deck instead, it was pre-owned but only the basic lands were different (hey, they were swapped for unstable basics so no reason not to.) I also got the morph deck from the same store, it's a ton of fun

Bought Virtue and Valor for my GF so I could teach her how to play. We’ve played multiple times since then and I’ve only beat her once so it’s pretty good.
i got the virtue and valor pack yesterday at the card shop in my town while with my homie. ive only been playing for like a week if that adapting somewhat well to the game and killed one of the top shop players in a 4 player game after he talked shit in 2 turns😅😂
I'm still confused about why no one likes planeswalker party 1 ichormoon and you can go infinite and win with almost nothing your opponents cab do about it

It’s inconsistent. Both mana base wise and performance wise. The ceiling is high, sure, but if you pop off 1 in 10 games and do very little in 4 in 10, most people are not going to recommend it. Though very hAppy for anyone who does enjoy it!
Hey don’t tell people about Kadima! That’s my main deck and it’s really only good because no one has any idea how to play against morphs. If a bunch of people start playing it that will no longer be the case.

Velociramptor without upgrades is pretty strong out of the box. Upgrading it destroys high power decks.

I run a heavily modified Kadena precon. My table hates it as they never know what's face down and plays at Flash speed.

My first deck and has become one of my faves being heavily modified with a lot of bombastic cards
The Captain N'ghathrod one can become pretty strong with minor upgrades. Get some good mill cards to replace the do-nothing horrors and you got a pretty strong and adaptable deck.
Honestly i think Party Time out of CLB is a pretty good Precon, even though the party mechanic is a little underused there are some powerfull cards in it
The blood token precon Strefan. Is pretty messed up too. I wasnt a fan of the set at all but the precon came with ways to give your vamps 1st strike and deathtouch though. I never modified it and it holds up against slivers and eldrazi better than some of my hardcore decks
I own lorehold legacies, can confirm, really fun, also should mention the painbow deck, domanaria 5 color, i have alotta fun playing it
Kadena was the very first magic product I ever purchased. She's one of my favorite commanders ever and has her own playmat I use with her =D.
Exit from exile is fun, that blue black one with ghisa and gheralt as commander is nasty. Planeswalkers party I got for 45 and is really fun

Of course it counts, I built my first through Universe Beyond Doctor Who 2 months ago. Missy or Cybermen Controller as my commanders
My biggest issue with V&V deck was... that i already own most of the expensive cards, so it was a lot cheaper to buy missing pieces than to buy the deck. lol
As far as Kadena goes tho... Morphs are terrible, there are a very few upgrades to be made for the deck, and in the future, there's little chance new morph cards will be made, which ruins its fun I guess.
Similar thing happened with Mutate deck, which is another Sultai bust.
Morph's are a drag to play tho, remembering which facedown card is which is really annoying. lol
Heck I play werewolves and I find tracking Day/Night less taxing. lol
picked up a friend of mine the neylai precon and not gonna lie he has buffed a few cards out of it and has been kind of stomping our play group last few games!

I got a couple commander master precons over the years and Ellivere is still the biggest “what the fuck this commander goes crazy so fast so consistently!” Even though it’s a base precon. I get similar vibes from each ixalan precon. Hakbal explore also goes off so fast
Honestly all the warhammer precons are fun, flavorful decks right out of the box
The price in canada drives me insane for example just for the first example the minimum is 50 cad but most places sell them for 70$ cad
I picked Anhelo and boy... This quickly became my favorite. Lay low, build stupid combos, and literally explode the table. Killed 3 players by milling 100+ cards in the same turn.
I'm having fun with Quantum Quandrix. But ngl I upgraded the hell out of it, so I'll get another precon and do minor upgrades. It had insane card draw, but it works as a token creation deck.
As a super new player (I literally don't even have my own deck, just have been borrowing others), would y'all suggest the Virtue and Valor precon? I'm pretty unsure. but it is relatively cheap, and so it isn't the end of the world if it isn't my favorite.
I want to declare that the Prosper and Breena ones are also incredibly good with just a bit of tweaking.
Prosper would require at least 30 card replacement but it will always be my favourite 😍

Osgir is underrated. Playing reanimate in Boros is a great time. It does need a few tweaks to really shine, though.

Virtue and Valor is my wife's favorite deck. It isn't complicated. It's fast. It can get crazy powerful in absolutely no time.
I really enjoy that deck. I thought I had the mechanics wrong the first time I played it, turns out it was just kicking off

Neyali can be a beast, with the right upgrades.
Rabble Rousing is just one card that I could mention.
If one more commander youtube channel slanders planeswalker party, I'm gonna lose my mind. That Precon is killer out of box and functions well even when I pulled the best pieces for other decks.
Glad you enjoy it! But it definitely sounds like you are in the minority, so the newer players who are watching this are probably better served by not being encouraged to pick up a deck that a lot of people won’t enjoy. Same actually goes for the morph deck…

I am new to magic and realised that the commander decks are pretty expensive. So I was wondering does this format rotate so that in a few years I cant play a 3 year old deck anymore or can I buy one deck and play it like for ever?

+1 for team Henzi … it’s just so good. You can fully build it your own with draft chaff and it can still be pretty good.
Another fun precon I would suggest is Kalamax.
Faceless menace was my first commander precon and it suuuucks, it has fun mechanics but the attention you have to spend on your own board state versus how little pay-off you get from flipping your cards feels really clunky and is not at all powerful.
it's more the card drawing that is powerful. and you can barely interact with morphs

i'd love the commander masters precons if they weren't DOUBLE THE PRICE FOR NO REASON. I picked up the cats deck instead, it was pre-owned but only the basic lands were different (hey, they were swapped for unstable basics so no reason not to.) I also got the morph deck from the same store, it's a ton of fun
Gisa and geralf pre con graveyard deck is so good iam destroying my friends, and I just started. Iam so glade I got into MTG and try many many builds

Bought Virtue and Valor for my GF so I could teach her how to play. We’ve played multiple times since then and I’ve only beat her once so it’s pretty good.

i got the virtue and valor pack yesterday at the card shop in my town while with my homie. ive only been playing for like a week if that adapting somewhat well to the game and killed one of the top shop players in a 4 player game after he talked shit in 2 turns😅😂

I'm still confused about why no one likes planeswalker party 1 ichormoon and you can go infinite and win with almost nothing your opponents cab do about it

It’s inconsistent. Both mana base wise and performance wise. The ceiling is high, sure, but if you pop off 1 in 10 games and do very little in 4 in 10, most people are not going to recommend it. Though very hAppy for anyone who does enjoy it!
The vechile precon is dope. It can run away with the game pretty easily.
Hey don’t tell people about Kadima! That’s my main deck and it’s really only good because no one has any idea how to play against morphs. If a bunch of people start playing it that will no longer be the case.
