His character alongside his influence on role to that of the male characters of the yaoi, as well as that of the characters of the shōjo genre had was felt already in 90s. The only thing she is known for is how pointless of character she is.
I actually liked Casey’s performance as Shinji and the new cast in general did a fine job for what they were given. The translation is a bit too literal, but it’s more accurate to the original Japanese idc what people say. And for those complaining that Shinji sounds like a woman, I guess you haven’t watched the original Japanese version because Shinji’s original VA was a woman so this performance doesn’t bother me that much.
I remember that when I first viewed the show, I saw Kaworu as someone playing with the fragile mental health state of Shinji, an angel that manipulated Shinji and made him turn against humanity. It's only when a friend told me otherwise that, okay, maybe I'm too insecure, then again. He pretty much did that didn't he?
I don't think he wanted to put Shinji against humanity. He manipulated Shinji, but he really appreciated him. In my opinion, he quickly grew fond of him for his vulnerability. I still think he planned to destroy humanity at some point, but after meeting Lilith (the mother of humanity) rather than Adam as he thought, it seems like he changed his mind and realized that it was humans who should inherit Earth. He was detached and cold at points, but I assume that this was due to his nature as an angel which created an emotional barrier towards humans. In the end he valued Shinji's life above his, since he didn't really have much of a will to live, again probably due to his nature as an angel inside a human body.

It's perfectly possible that he both loved Shinji a great deal (especially considering he'd only known SEELE's people and their cold manipulation at that point) and yet still fully intended to wipe out both him and the rest of humanity. I fully believe that - had he wanted to - he could have easily kept fighting even after realizing he was lied to regarding the location of his original body; hell, *especially* after finding that out, he'd be more dead-set on wiping out humanity entirely, you'd imagine. He was having very little difficulty fending off Shinji in Eva-01. Yet, he just gave up, knowing that even though Shinji would sadly never understand his sacrifice or the reasons behind it, that he did it because he saw something in Shinji that made him feel humanity was worthy of inheriting the Earth. It's sad Shinji would never know that, and just felt he'd been betrayed by and had to kill his friend, but a nigh-omnipotent God saying "I like you, you've honestly changed my mind and you should *really* kill me and I'll let you do it" is an absolutely fucking massive compliment, even if it was only after his own goals (or, originally being an angel, maybe "instincts" is more apt) had been thwarted.
This is probably my favorite episode of Neon Genisis Evangelion. It's so amazing. Kaworu and Shinji fill me with life. They're done so well. I have problems with Evangelion but here, it's amazing

What the hell would be the difference between between the 17th and 18th Angels in the grand sceme of things? Just for context, mankind, all of ut, constitutes the 18th Angel, at least pre-Rebuild... the numbering of angels is kinda inconsistent after the anime. Oh, fun fact about Kaworu that legitimizes every supplemental/fanwork ever made. ...Alll Kaworu appearances across every manga, film, videogames, or whatever else? *SAME. KAWORU. FROM. THE. ANIME.* He's literally the one character that *NEVER* changes. Ironically, that is also a defining characteristic of the Angels themselves, at least insofar as them being born pretty much 'perfect' from the start. Anyway, various dialogues from the Rebuild and some manga pretty much spell out that the Kaworu we see here in the OG anime is the same one in any other work still trying to fulfill his goal of 'making Shinji happy'. Rebuild offers a solution not unlike the manga... Just remove the angels/himself from the equation and give Shinji a 3rd option love interest.
I like this dub way more than the awful 90s dub-which invented heaps of bad memes and misunderstandings. The Japanese cast is simply unbeatable-but this is a respectable dub.
I watched the final episode of Evangelion recently and had a few spoilers about Kaworu, (spoilers ahead) like knowing that he has Adam's soul. I don't really know if a soul is the same as personality but I wonder if Kaworu truly is Adam. I always imagined Adam from the spoilers as a god-like being that was jealous of Lilith, wanting to destroy her at any cost because the humans inherited the earth instead of the angels. Kaworu showed me a different perspective, though he may not be Adam himself he doesn't have the hatred that I imagined he'd have. Instead I was completely wrong. Adam doesn't hate, he loves. Despite your interpretation of Kaworu and Shinji's relationship, you can tell that the love they shared, of friendship or romantic though brief, was impactful for the both of them. Shinji felt Kaworu's warmth and Kaworu became fascinated by humans through Shinji. We love and break, learn our lessons and make the decisions that lead to pain again only to break once more. However many times it happens we always have a choice to build ourselves again. There's beauty but also sorrow and the nature of opposites is not as simple as we like to think. Angels and humans, different but the same. I think that's why Kaworu, or Adam changed his mind and allowed the Lilin to exist bereft of his presence.
This episode...I cannot watch it ever again. My best friend committed suicide not too long after I saw End of Evangelion at only age 16. Right before Covid hit. He seemed so happy in the pictures he sent. I cannot imagine how he could ever have forsaken his own life. This episode right here makes me wonder if I’ve hurt him somehow. If I’m somehow responsible for his death... It made want to die.
