I think your channel nails the balance between objective information about boots and their construction vs. subjective feelings on how they wear and feel. Thank you for all the work, love, and care you put into making videos for us.
Hi Bootlosophy, first things first just want to say this channel is criminally underrated, the quality of these videos are just top notch, you should be getting 7 times the amount of viewers/subscribers you're currently getting 😅 Secondly wanted to ask but when should we expect that update on the Russel Moccasin's Backcountry, I just put an order in a couple hours ago, and can't wait to get my -hands- foot on them :)
I have two pairs of Brass boots in CXL leather and they were my choice for a recent two week trip in Italy. They were great no matter what they ran into. Handled planes, trains and automobiles not to mention every conceivable type of cobblestone road without a hitch. Great boots. Thanks for the excellent follow up Teik. I value your opinion and experience. Take care.
I have the same boots in 12E and have also had them for about 3 years. Similar to yours, they've been on a number of hikes in a bunch of different conditions (wintry mud in Oregon and Washington, dry sandy and rocky trails in Arizona & New Mexico, and packed dirt and gravel trails in parks along the east coast). They've also spent a lot of time pounding pavement. They are also my best fitting Grant Stone boots. I've tried finding an equally good fit in the leo last to no avail. When GS released the Baroda earlier this month, I immediately snapped up a pair in the tan color from Badalassi. So far, so good with those, but that leather is quite stiff and will need some time to break in.
Great (re-visit) review Teik, as always. Stead's Waxy Commander is one of my favorite leathers for GS boots. Especially the Natural as this one ages the best imo. I've found that if you want to keep or bring back the Waxy Commander to its new look, rub it in with solid Otterwax like you did and then evenly rub it in and distribute with your bare fingers. *Not* with a head gun. The warmth from your hands and the rubbing is just enough for the wax to give that smooth new 'sealed' look without soaking into the leather. This method gives excellent weather protection too.
Thanks Teik! This exact boot was my attempt to see if anything in the GS lineup would fit my boat size feet (13.5 E, high volume). These were SO close. GS made the return process near effortless. The build quality on these is top notch, and I'd encourage anyone to not be misled by the fact that this upper is a suede. It's 5 oz plus the lining, not work boot thickness, but far from something that belongs on a pure fashion boot IMHO. I could tell from close inspection these could definitely take some abuse. I had no issues with these other than not being crazy about the placement of the moc toe stitch. Well, that and GS not making anything above a size 13. Maybe someday. ☹️ Cheers!
I have their penny loafer & Chelsea both in suede boots as b grades. I say it change my mind on oversea production. It has amazing build quality. I wear the loafer a lot more but the Chelsea is not bad but the last kind of feel of at some points. I think I fully broken in the loafer but the Chelsea is close to feel good just that awkward feeling. Anyways GS you get gear shoes that seem Alden quality. If you look past the made in label. They’re not rugged boots by all means but still durable & look amazing.
I have these in waxed natural commander and black cxl. Some of my favorite boots. The only ones I have that are more comfortable are the Cordobes service boot but I gave them my measurements for those, so not an apples to apples comparisons. These seem to be more durable, though. Tek, I don't know if you've heard about Crush on Retro boots, but they look very very high quality for prices that are almost not to be believed. Made in China. I have a couple pair on the way and want to see how they are.
Jan, 2025 , I just bought the saddle tan with the wedge sole. They're now $400. I do a lot of woodworking, I'm usually a 13.5 and I'm hoping 13E fits. As 13 is the biggest offered. Will they hold up and shine up if I use them like a work boot ? Are they worth $400. I'm sure they'll look great at home depot 😅
I have two pairs of Brass Boots in CXL black size 10 D. and Dune 9.5 D. Love it. Looking for Diesel Boot Crimson Thinking about what size it fit. 10. D Or 9.5 D. Like your video.
I have the field boots and I would agree on the wedge sole comment. I like Grant Stone. Their styles, build quality, leathers, etc. I really liked their prices a few years ago. Most of their Diesel, Field, and Brass boots are all basically $400. Call me ignorant but that is sabotaging that value narrative in my opinion. When you get to $400+ you’re bumping into brands made more locally. Just my useless opinion.
I think there's some truth to what you're saying about not being a "steal" when you start getting to 400 dollars. I've ordered two pairs of fully customized JakkRabbits and both came in at around that same 400 dollar mark even with add-ons like a double midsole and Dr. Sole outsoles. Those aren't any more locally made (I live in the U.S.), but definitely rivaling Grant Stone in terms of quality workmanship, great leathers, etc. That said, I had a 5 week and a 12 week wait time for those pairs, so there is something to be said for the convenience of boots that ship the next day.
No, I think 'tis more in the IDEA of ALDEN than those other ones, which are often usually come with a wedge outsole instead of a lug one, but Alden doesn't do either but still has a heel. Also, the end music is a little more your actual personality than the intro geetaw riff blues thing...
I have the Field version in earth but just finally got this style last week or something, but consider them a bit more dressy and would rather have the less rugged outsole for the leather I got.
I don't know if thoro is supposed to be lazy copy of RW since there are other companies who might look more like RW, but their parent company predates RW by over a decade. Wolverine boasts 11 years older than thoro, but don't know if they were doing moc toes then, either. Alden comes a year or two after Wolver, but also don't know which year the one more this style debuts.
i'm less keen on the whole waxy trend. Apart from Field Boot that was on sale, I just have a couple from less expensy brand... [I might have preferred the tan after all, but no emergency to collect them now.]
The original Field Boot design was for East Coast American hunty, blah, blah, but some of that terrain is still mountainous, so perhaps the Old School guys still would have wanted an outsole better suited for the conditions rather than quiet stealth, etc. Don't know. Less options in those days overall, tho, right? I might have
