The deeper I go into Van's music the more new and mind blowing it becomes. The man never stops reinventing his voice, style, and charisma. A legend for the ages.
I saw him live in Newcastle that year (when I was 16 YO), with the same band and a similar setlist, and can attest that they were amazing! Up to that point, I'd never seen such a great singer and musicians on stage.
I bought this CD from WOM (World of Music) in Munich when I was there in the early 90's. It was amazing to hear it then and it's still amazing to hear it not 30 years or so on. I was fortunate enough to see Van and Georgie Fame play several times and they were always excellent together.
This show was on fire from start to finish! Thank you for posting it. Interesting that this this took place in 1990, a year after Avalon Sunset was released, but only “Whenever God Shines His Light” from that album was performed.

I've listened to dozen, or hundred, Van bootlegs, and this one gets "great reviews"; that's insane, this is mostly "Van Lite" and there's far better performances of EVERYTHING here (and these are actually pretty lame.) The sound quality is good, and the band seems content and/or happy. To be stand-ins, mostly, it seems, e.g., the sax is HORRENDOUS on "Summetime" (total farce) ... a Saturday Night Live-type set (I'd call it) and ridiculously boring compared to spectacular sets can be found (previous) boots. Everything found here is "ok at best" if you asked me, and the background (lots of background) vocals mostly just annoy the piss out of me. These are "different," from Lp arrangements, and different arrangements even from (many?) other well-known live shows. That's it; different, but no-wise better, honestly, just worse to these ears. Others may differ in opinion, they might even be "right," I've no idea beings I can hardly pay any legit attention and it's a pity. "Domino" here is supposedly "a consensus favorite." Who cares? Domino was practically a throwaway number from Day-1. It's all superficial. The whole show. I HATE this version of Domino. Maybe WORST I've heard. "You can use, this higher power, in any hour." Mr. Morrison DID compose some really inane New Age garbage at times ..."Given up [P]{h}ope" then "Surrender" ... Christ Almighty he MUTILATES BEYOND RECOGNITION a really great number like "Spirit". This is bullshit. I'd pay any amount to see and hear a really great show by Van the Man; wouldn't give a plug nickel for this schlock. This should be deleted.
I can relate to this on some level. Van has so much music, it's understandable that that not everybody likes everything. Which concert do you consider one of his best? his one does sound high energy and fun, though, which is why many think it's great. Sometimes it's not about individual songs but the general atmosphere of a concert.
When I listen to this, I go for DYGH (admittedly a bit fast for my taste - check "Somewhere Over The Mountains" a year earlier, or modern versions); JWS; ST; Caravan>Garden. Caravan is pretty unique. Btw the bass and drum guys at this show I don't recognize and don't think they lasted (not to say they aren't good musicians). And as for Domino, I don't listen to that one anymore, as it's been out of the rotation for ages (maybe this was the last time). I just recorded Van at Hollywood Bowl and Santa Barbara Bowl 3 weeks ago (check my channel) perhaps you this is more to your liking? He's still excellent in my humble opinion.

Why not tell us how you really feel babe?
You don't have clue of what your talking about. Why don't you go and listen to your KISS records and calm down.

From reading your post it’s apparent to me that you don’t really get Van Morrison and probably shouldn’t be listening to Van. Try the Beatles!
