    A very clear, low stress, well-paced lesson on simple subjects, contrasted with complete subjects. A sprinkle of helpful pictures aid visual learners. I will always want to come back to this lesson year after year to give my students the clearest presentation of this subject.

    Can you help me to find the simple subject in "New York City is an exciting place" and "Dandelion seeds floated through the air"

    • @EnglishUnits
      @EnglishUnits  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Carolina, do you have a guess about these? If yes, tell me that first. If not, find the verb of each, and tell me what it is. This is what I always do first.

    • @carolinaaguilar2685
      @carolinaaguilar2685 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EnglishUnits New York City and seeds?

    • @EnglishUnits
      @EnglishUnits  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes:) Note that "dandelion seeds" is tricky. Some people might feel this is a compound noun that should not be separated. (If so, they'll say "dandelion seeds" is the simple subject, sort of like "water tank" since it's one thing, so you wouldn't say that "tank" is the simple subject...you'd say "water tank" is the simple subject. ) I can understand that interpretation, but my view is that "seeds" is a noun, and "dandelion" is an adjective describing it, meaning "seeds" is the simple subject.

    can you help me.where is predicate in the sentence :there are many clothes in my closet?

    • @EnglishUnits
      @EnglishUnits  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Hh Gh, sentences that begin with "there is" or "there are" seem strange. But actually, they function like other sentences--just the word order is different. To find the predicate, look for the verb. The verb is "are." Now, identify the subject...WHAT or WHO "are"? Many clothes "are." SO, in your sentence:
      -Complete subject: many clothes
      -Simple subject: clothes
      -Complete predicate: are there in my closet
      -Simple predicate: are

      So, first, do you see the verb or action of the sentence? Tell me what it is.

    There's something that's not very clear to me. If you don't mind me asking, why is student the simple subject not every student? Because it changes the meaning. I'll be grateful if you could explain it to me. 😊

    • @EnglishUnits
      @EnglishUnits  ปีที่แล้ว

      The simple subject only includes the most basic word or words (usually nouns or pronouns) telling who or what did the action. The word "every" does change the meaning, so it's important in this sentence. However, it's a describing word (adjective) and not the person or thing that did the action. For this reason, it's not part of the simple subject.
      Words in the complete subject, including "every" in this case, nearly always change the meaning of the simple subject by adding more detail.
